"Building the towers belongs to the sky. When the whole thing comes crashing down, don't ask me why." This song was written several years before 9/11, which has always creeped me out.
Matt Cameron is a beast of a drummer, too. He wrote this song, too! Cornell's pipes alone are always impressive, but the musicianship in the band in general is so good and I'm glad you devote time to each player.
It's always Matt Cameron on all of their albums. Chris Cornell was the original drummer, and they had someone named Scott Sundquist early on, but Matt's been drumming from near the beginning. I love him best in Soundgarden, but I heard in Pearl Jam's upcoming album he'll be playing more interesting like he does in Soundgarden.
That would be Like Suicide for me. So glad Soundgarden gave us such a wide range of unique songs that there's always someone who loves a song that is not so appreciated by others. In my case, it's No Wrong No Right, lol, I love the little vipers and poison snakes' song!
@@msoundg "No Wrong No Right" is awesome. It's got an Ultramega OK era feel to it but a more evolved Soundgarden at the same time. My favorites from Louder Than Love are "Power Trip" and "Uncovered."
I have to say this is pretty much my favorite Soundgarden album. There are so many good songs on it. One song I was listening to from one of their other albums that I think David needs to react who is never named that’s off of the down on the upside album. That is a fast little punky number that I think he would enjoy.
Matt Cameron had a lot of these odd time signature songs but he doesn't go overboard and clarifies the measure of the bar. It's not complex but very fun to play sort of like refrigerator car by spin doctors (which were recently spammed by family guy doing parodies of Oscar films and all of them being 90s films).
I love the Sabbathesque descending note riff in the verses. One way to get me to like a song is throw in a slow, doom like riff like the verses in this song has. Plus, Cornell’s yell/scream at the end of his line in the chorus. I love that.
Not to be ironic, but it’s still my fave track from that album. I realize it is slow and ponderous, but its dark feel and tone is what makes me a fan. I know that Chris wrote both the music and the lyrics. And I still believe the title is basically a dark metaphor for the end of the Seattle scene or “grunge” as it’s always been labeled. That could’ve been some type of self-destructive idea, or a wish to do away with a music scene that might’ve felt out of control, I don’t know. Like a lot of the songs on that record it leans towards the dark side. Still so very glad I had music like this to grow up on.
@@caciquesealth6281 Well, since I can’t locate my original CD copy of the album, I’ll have to take your word for it. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve looked at those liner notes.
Thank you for this. The song is in 15/8 time signature but it works like you said. I’ve always loved this song but it also isn’t my favorite but Soundgarden is so amazing that it’s hard to say what’s the favorite but it’s up there. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I absolutely love this song, it's one of my favs off superunknown. And just to a little note on what DH said about Chris' vocals, this definitely isn't his strongest performance, but I think it does a fantastic job at showing just how much control Chris had over his vocals.
Love the slight vibes of eastern music in Soundgardens deeply grungey sounds. 15/8 is just 5/4 like 12/8 is a slow 4/4, so rather typical Soundgarden :D As others said, its a song to really let your darker side 'light up'. That's why I love Soundgarden in general: Instead of being down, sad, beaten; I can listen to good music and get some energy and rage against whatever's bugging me (often enough myself).
Great review, as always! That's the one Kim, who wrote the song, told us was a waltz! It was never a favorite, but as a fan I always enjoyed the song as one more peculiar Soundgarden tune, quite unique, slightly odd in their approach, which appeals so much to my ears, but when I heard Kim saying in an interview that it was a waltz, that's when it became really interesting to me. Let's do a waltz this time, ok? And don't forget to bring the most depressing and foreboding lyrics you can to go with it! Such a Soundgarden thing to do, lol
it's 15/8. takes a great drummer to make all these songs sound effortless. Kim used to love the moments when the crowd would get out of sync from trying to dance to all the weird time signatures
You don’t “have to find the phrasing.” Some of us just listen and feel it. Soundgarden uses a lot of unusual time signatures with great effect. Nobody I know of makes music like this anymore; it was pure genius.
Soundgarden were compared to Zeppelin and Sabbath in part because all of their members had their individual skills and talents. A great four piece band where everyone had their signature style is what makes for a great band.
Pretty sure it's 15/8. When I first bought this CD as a teenager, the weekend it came out, this was my favorite track on the album. That changed but I still have a soft spot for this incredibly written and executed song.
The first album I ever bought, listened to it religiously. I can listen to every song on this album from Let me Drown to Like Suicide. Limo Wreck is my favorite song on the album.
Matt's one of my fave drummers. Exactly for the thing David's pointing out. He adds the "oomph" and fills to propel songs forward. Moreso in Soundgarden than Pearl Jam.
One of my favorites and adore this song so much. The live versions are better but this one has great production and the textures pan around deceptively. The main lick is very Black Sabbath like. Steady yet a heavy riff. Matt is soooo amazing. He’s not a all over the place drummer but he works to make his drum riffs so perfect he can. Over all the emotional feel of this song kills.
Great song, and great video! David, off of the top of your head, do you know what your highest-rated song is that you have listened to on your channel?
Yes, this is Cameron on the drums. He also co-wrote the song w/ Chris Cornell. I'm frankly surprised you wouldn't be aware of this fact, unless you've exclusively listened to death metal. Sorry, this is the 1st vid I've seen of yours.
Dude I appreciate your expertise in recognising time signatures etc ..but I guarantee you that the band didn't give a fcuk about any of that when they were writing it ..they just played 🌟
True, they’ve been asked about their time signatures before and said it wasn’t exactly something they were actively thinking about, they would just play however they felt like
Cmon Dave...Matt Cameron has always been the drummer for SG.. except for the early years where CC was the drummer AND covered vocals. On another note ...Cameron now to play drums for the Foos on tour.
Nice reaction! Love (along with other things) how you pay attention to time signatures. Please, please react to SG's "Tighter & tighter" from their Down on the upside -album. That tune really grew on me over the years. Link to that song here: ua-cam.com/video/u5a8zXaKapc/v-deo.html
Love your videos and long time subscriber but why do you focus so much on time signatures of tracks as opposed something like the actual lyrics of the songs?
I'm not a lyrics guy. Lyrics go right over my head 99% of the time. So I focus on what I know I'm good at, which is the actual musicianship, theory, and songwriting.
This whole album is amazing. RIP Chris.
This album kicks fuckin ass.
I love the diversity of the album, plus Chris vocals are fucking astonishing

Cornell started as the drummer and wanted to move to vocals . Thank God, 'ey?
One of my fav Soundgarden songs
I feel for anyone who hasn't listened to all the output from the best singer who has ever lived
I love how full and dark this song is. Anyone else hear shades of led zeps dazed and confused? Kept popping into my head when I was listening 😁
Good point, yeah, I do, right in the beginning of D&C!
911 and Covid 19 we’re both disasters of catastrophic sadness
Soundgarden Incessant Mace is definitely their dazed and confused cover
@@taylormays29 Incessant Mace is one of my top Soundgarden songs. Seeing it live in 2013 was an absolute blast!
