"The point isn't to have a perfect frameable product each time you sit down to draw. It's to BE drawing, to be IN the process, to BE an artist, and to see the world like only an artist can." Yes! and Yes! Thank you Danny! 😃
Ha, I came in to type exactly that quote but you've saved me the time, thank you! And thank you Danny for another superb talk with oodles of great advice.
As a bodybuilding hobbyist and former basketball player, this makes so much sense to me! I forget how physical art is, and that makes it sound more fun to me!
I loved that teacup exercise. I now draw the flowers (from my garden) every morning at about 6am because of what you wrote - they are always on the table, even when I am 6am sleepy and making my coffee. I am loosening up and growing. Yet another bit of Danny magic (n.b. - the drawings are not always lovely!) We need a few more heroes like you, Danny. I am doing regular sketchy walks in France now with a really lovely lady who leads us to sketch in the streets- but I doubt I would have felt so courageous without you. Thanks (once again).
I am currently learning to draw landscapes. I came back from holiday with a phone full of wonderful photos that I want to paint. But when I sat down with my sketchbook and watercolors it all felt intimidating. So I took my journaling sketchbook and a ball point pen and started to draw a thumbnail sketch of the last photo in my phone. The next day I took my son's color pencils and did the same with the next picture. And I intend to carry on. It already feels les daunting.
Its true I recently started blind contouring the same chair for days now and I can feel the benefits. My line feel more accurate to other subjects I'm drawing, even though at the time it felt boring and lame. And now I love it!
this is exactly what I needed! I have so many ideas about what I want to draw, and I don't know where to start other than fumble my way through in the dark. This gives me a way of starting somewhere.
@godisloveeternally give yourself permission to make lots of bad drawings on the way to slow and steady improvement. Thank God, only He is perfect. We don’t have to be. Pressure off! Have FUN and enjoy it. Blessings to you 🙏🏻
I am just starting to draw, and I quickly came to the same realization that you are sharing. I'm drawing things repeatedly and making improvements every time. Also, drawing the item from different angles and with different light. At first it was with dread, but as I see improvement, I am getting excited about drawing.
Thanks for the video. I agree with this idea, last year I felt a good progress in my skills by drawing the same action poses I found in a book over and over again. Everytime I found new details and understand the same subject more. It never feel like doing the same thing because my view of the pose change with each drawing
Oh wow, I just went to check the comments and there's none😂 What I try to do is draw whenever I have 10+ minutes of waiting time, I have this small sketchbook that fits in my pocket with my favourite pen attached, so I draw whenever I have a moment. I usually have to wait at least 10 minutes after work till my bus arrives so I just pick something interesting and draw it until I have to leave Thanks to this one rule and the size of the sketchbook I've already filled it a 4th of the way, last sketchbook took me 2 years to finish Edit: also if I'm really not feeling like drawing or I don't have time at all I do blind contour from the back of the sketchbook, another one of my rules is to draw something every day even if it's a scribble and putting it in the back makes it easier for me to not think that "I'll ruin my sketchbook" since I usually use those pages to test art supplies as well
Ive always been a David Bowie fan and I tried to draw the album cover to Hunky Dory once...it looked awful...I tried it again, and it looked better and the 3rd time was perfect...i absolutely agree that drawing the same thing is absolutely the way to go....im going to try a favourite building in town next....
Thank you, Danny. I apply your advice to my writing also: it's so important to make that another line, to write that another word, even if no one reads or appreciates it.
Thanks for your helpfull encouraging videos, Danny! ...as an amateur musician I'd like to encourage you to learn to play an instrument (you mentioned the piano). The same things that you tell apply and come from it: a healthy brain, it's inspiring, you don't have to be a professional nor make money out of it, you make new friends through playing, etc. It's just loads of fun! And, you only need 15 minutes of practice each day. It's never too late, one is never ever too old for it. I started to learn to play the clarinet when I turned 60!
I really like your approach to learning to draw. I never started drawing because I always thought that first I had to run through all that boring things like drawing shapes and doing other exercises. But your videos inspired me to just start and "be brave enough to be bad at something new". So thank you! 😊
One thing I used to do was buy those extra large sketch pads. The really big ones. I would place it at the kitchen table and as the months went by day by day, a little here a little there.
Wow I looove this idea. I only was able to draw a dog every day for Doggust so only 30 days a couple of years ago but ima gonna do it again dude thank you for all you do!!!!! Love your channel🤩
Been drawing my DnD characters like an obsession. Same with my book characters. Again and again. I think I need to do some more life drawings because my grasp on light and form is subpar at best. Doesn't stop me winging it though. What I have noticed from drawing the same characters over and over again is when I draw a picture and can say "yes! That's him! That's Robby!" I go back to my other drawings to try and figure out why this drawing looks like the fictional character and why this one doesn't. Variations in the placement of the eye and nose and mouth, all in relation to the jaw length and shape or whatever. I have also noticed that my drawings are less stiff, and that I can say more with less lines. So. Yeah. Drawing the same subject is rad. But I never thought of it quite like this.... Thanks for the video!!
@@SketchBookSkool absolutely! Do you play DnD as well? Does it inspire your art as well? Maybe you could make a video? :3 I never understood the OC thing before these subjects crossed my path... but definitely shows me the appeal of making an OC.
Thank you for your wonderful videos, Mr Gregory! 🌹✨ Do you have any advice for people like me whose terrible perfectionism takes all the joy out of drawing (and writing)? I try to look at it like Mr Hemingway, who said: “The first draft of anything is shit.” It's not the fear of what other people will think of my drawings and stories, it's that I expect myself to be so much better than I actually am. I wish I didn't give a damn and just enjoyed drawing and writing ideas freely, but my perfectionism paralyses me.
Every time I read your emails I want to hit the like button! 😂❤ And your book is showing up as unavailable. I hope that's not because I'm across the pond.
@@SketchBookSkool thanks. Ebooks have thier place, but this is the sort of book I'd like to feel... and leave hanging around the house for anyone to pick up and peruse. Hopefully it'll be available again soon.

Such a great vídeo. You're not only a drawing teacher, you're a wise man. Fantastic 👏👏👏👏
Very Encouraging Danny. I am getting back into drawing and really needed to hear you say that repetition is more than ok . 😊
In the end it's about patience, perseverance and stamina. And that's the biggest struggle for me!

Great advice and well said Danny.
so inspiring, as always ❤ thank you

I draw my drinks when I go to pubs. The last pint of beer is a lot looser and abstract than the first! 😁 🍻
