    Hi! A very late reply to your video by me! I have a question regarding a problem I'm encountering. When I change the pattern on the Octatrack, the Digitakt waits another 16 steps to change the pattern. But yours change immediately. How would I achieve that? Many thanks!

    Hey! Great tutorial. I'm waiting eagerly for more. However there was one thing I didn't understand. How can you send midi information to the digitakt, digitone and tb03 when the Octatrack only has one midi out?

    • @jonaswasa
      @jonaswasa 4 роки тому

      I mean one midi out cable

    • @cellrok
      @cellrok  4 роки тому +4

      @@jonaswasa Most MIDI devices have a "THRU" port in addition to "IN" or "OUT". The "THRU" will output a copy of what is send "IN". That way you can Daisy-Chain multiple instruments going "OUT -> IN -> THRU -> IN -> THRU -> IN ...." etc.
      Another option would be using a so called "THRU-BOX" which is kinda like powerstrip for MIDI. You plug one cable IN and have X amount of copies of that signal (from Octatrack for example).
      Since a single cable can carry 16 instrument streams (so called "Channels") you can configure the master sequencer (Octatrack in this case) to talk to individual instruments present on the aforementioned Daisy-Chain or Thru-Box outputs. You just have to assign individual Channel number on the devices you want to add to the chain. Like 2 for Digitone, 3 for Digitakt, 4 for TB03 .. then you just have to pick an empty MIDI Track on the OT and choose that Number. Notes placd on that track will then be send out and the connected device will respond, whereever it is in that chain.
      Fun fact: you can even set multiple devices to the same channel and have them play the same notes as a form of "stacking" synths.

    great example! one question, since you connect tb03 to OT and program midi information of it on OT, the pattern on tb03 itself get no use. SO my question is can I save the pattern(midi info) of tb03 on OT?

    • @cellrok
      @cellrok  4 роки тому

      Yes, I think you can. TB03 sends midi on the same channel it receives. So you only need to give a midi track on OT that channel, or use AUTO to use the currently selected, and hit record. But OT is also just a step sequencer and not event based. It will quantize to it's internal grid and perhaps won't record CC info like slide.. maybe it works if you configure the CC knobs to match TB03. Especially the slide CC which is 104 I think. Have fun trying. PS: using the TB as random pattern generator on a sample channel could be lots of fun too :D

    This was a great video! Thank you for the explanations. I just recently picked up my Peak and Octatrack Mk2 but I noticed your video doesn’t discuss (or zoom in on the display) the settings on the Peak. The options are limited when it comes to the MIDI settings portion on the Peak.
    I’m more curious about why I am unable to reproduce the results in your video. While it would be helpful if you were able to zoom in close on the OT screen (and immediate surrounding buttons), I did pay more attention to the words and instruction provided. I just can not get the sync to happen so I end up with no sounds at all coming through. I set up the MIDI CC as channel 10 yet I don’t understand why you set up tracks 6 & 7 as THRU for the Peak & DN yet you selected Track 1 and changed the MIDI to match the info coming in from the Peak. Why bother setting up those 2 tracks if you aren’t using them?
    My current setup is OT as the brain with a Novation Peak and Analog Four Mk2. I’m using my keyboard as the MIDI controller. I’ve connected that to the IN of the MIDI THRU BOX. From the MIDI THRU BOX, I ran a MIDI cable from the MIDI THRU into the Peak and A4. Should I have connected the MIDI from the OT ‘THRU’ to the Peak & A4 or should I have used the MIDI OUT from the OT?
    Either way, I have missed something amazing and hope you make another video to help out.

    • @cellrok
      @cellrok  3 роки тому +2

      Hello! Yes, you are correct. You should use the MIDI OUT from the Octatrack! MIDI THRU always is an exact copy of what midi-data is received on MIDI IN of the machine. It does not send anything from the machine. THRU is only passing the notes along that come in)
      CABLE SETUP
      ----------------
      Keyboard OUT > Octatrack IN
      Octatrack OUT > THRU box
      THRU box OUT > Analog Four IN
      THRU box OUT > Peak IN
      OT SETUP
      ----------------
      Your Midi Keyboard also needs a channel. Usually it sends on Channel 1. Find out which MIDI Channel your Keyboard uses. That is important for Octatrack. Let's say your keyboard is sending Notes on Channel 1. Go to your Octatrack MIDI Settings and then go into the "Channels" menu. At the top there is something called "AUTO", referring to the Auto-Channel with a Number next to it. Set this to the Number of your Keyboard (Channel 1). Then exit the Midi Settings again.
      SYNTH SETUP
      ----------------
      Configure your Peak:
      Go to Settings, Page 3 and choose a free Midi channel (that you don't use elsewhere). For example channel 7. Then save your settings on Peak by pressing SAVE once.
      Configure your Analog Four:
      Go to Settings, select "MIDI" and "Channels" and check which channels are being used. Analog Four is a bit more complex, because it is 4 synthesizers in 1 machine, so that is why it has more than one channel! I recommend you don't change anything and just look which numbers are being used. For example: Track 1 is Channel 1 and Track 2 is Channel 2 etc..
      Now lets pretend:
      - Peak is listening on Channel 7
      - Analog Four is listening to Channel 1-4
      TRACK SETUP
      ----------------
      Configure your Octatrack MIDI Channels to match your channels.
      - Go into MIDI Tracks and double-tap any track you like. For example [T1] - Now set the channel to 1. Press [YES] to save
      - Repeat this for all Analog Four channels, with [T2] to channel 2. Press [YES] to save .. then [T3] etc.
      - Now configure one channel for Peak like [T7] cause then it is easy to remember: Channel 7 = Track 7
      TESTING
      ----------------
      Remember the keyboard setup we did before? The AUTO channel? What it does is route your keyboard notes to the CURRENTLY selected track on your Octatrack automatically.
      - If you want to play keyboard notes to the Peak, just select [T7]
      - if you want to play keyboard notes to the Analog Four (Track 2) select [T2]
      - and so on...
      That's it..
      TROUBLESHOOTING
      ----------------
      - Check your Keyboard channel and AUTO channel on the Octatrack match. Check the manual of your keyboard how to select the output channel on your keyboard.
      - If you don't hear anything, but you can see Peak is receiving notes (LEDs blink), connect your headphones to the Peak and listen if there is really sound coming out.
      - Watch for the INPUT LEDs at the top of the Octatrack, if sound is being received on the inputs
      - If you think your MIDI is wrong, but the AUDIO channel is 100% correct, press the AUDITION button on your Peak to test. It will trigger a sound, without midi or keyboard.
      - Check your Audio Track config (THRU): There must be a trigger placed at the start of the pattern. This is needed that the audio-channel is "open" when you press PLAY.
      - Check your Audio Track config (THRU): Check it is the correct input (A B or C D) and that nothing is MUTED.
      - Check if your have a NEIGHBOUR track that is MUTED. Even when the THRU track is not muted, you will not hear anything then.
      - If you have everything connected and it doesnt work, remove the THRU Box and just connect the Peak directly to the OUT of the Octatrack, because it could be that the THRU Box is not working or that a cable is damaged.

    Thank you for your video. How do you use your Master Delay changing patterns and parts? Can you fade in the delay of the one pattern into the other one without recording that passage? And how do you export your patterns and parts to new projects (with samples and locked triggers)? Maybe you know the right way to Octatrack (:

    • @cellrok
      @cellrok  2 роки тому +1

      I don't really delay the switch of patterns. I keep them in sync through pattern-change going across all boxes. I then improvise the mix of each patten by muting individual parts or using the scenes to apply wash-out effects. Combined with muting it can appear as if it was a premade transition. - but maybe i misunderstood?

    Thanks for the very informative tutorial. One question about the audio of the external gear: do you connect 4 devices to OT? In this way they are all in mono, including Peak, right? Do you know any way how to preserve stereo for Peak when using only one OT input instead of two? Thanks. :)

    • @cellrok
      @cellrok  4 роки тому +4

      Usually i've passed the audio from the Peak through the Digitone. So it was 2x Stereo on 1x Stereo which then goes into C+D or A+B. Drums from Digitakt can be Mono and their inputs are mono too. So you could also piggyback the Mono through the Digitakt, or connect the Digitakt as Mono in A and have B free for the 303 or something... That is one way ... But this setup was already a little bit advanced so i had a small 4x Stereo Mixer connected in the back (cheapest on Amazon, no faders, super simple). Then went with a single Stereo cable into the OT. I did this so i could use the Digitone as Effect box for my Mono Synths. Unlike the Digitakt, the Digitone can apply the iternal Reverb and Delay to incoming audio. And it treats Left and Right as separate channels.

    Love your tips and tricks. One thing though confuses me - your method of sample slot allocation per bank - unless I am missing something, doesn't that limit you to only 10 samples per bank?

    • @cellrok
      @cellrok  5 років тому +1

      Yes, but that's no problem because I only have 7 or 8 tracks. Only If you use multiple one-shots on one track it becomes odd of course. With this way of organizing, and working with DT/DN you are limited to 8 songs (banks) so in theory you would use a Max of 80 slots which means you have 48 for "additional samples". You could also add even more by using Flex Tracks for those, giving you another 128 slots and for sample locking. On shot sounds are also small so putting them into ram should be fine.

    Hi Cellrock, few questions / comments. When setting program in Midi setting for lets say Peak, it looks like, that the Octa can only send Patch numbers, not Bank Changes for A B C D banks. Or am I missing something? Also as for Midi recordings, woudn’t the DT be a better alternative. I am lost in a way how to quantize simple Midi notes played from an external keyboard into Octatrack. Also it looks like there is some number of notes per track limitation. Would you mind cover that maybe in your next video? I am not sure there are any video on this Midi notes sequencing . Thank you.

    • @cellrok
      @cellrok  5 років тому

      Yes, the Bank changes are not transmitted properly. Big oversight by Elektron, but they say their way is correct and everyone else is doing it wrong.. I have found a workaround and will post the video about it in 1-2 hours
      For playing big chords you should use the Digitone, yes. It has no limit on the number of notes you can play. On the OT and DT you can only program up to 4 notes per step. Nothing more. It's just how it is.. they want you to use the right tool for the job and limited the OT in that way. It still is a step sequencer at the core and not an event-based piano roll with automation lanes and so on. Different concepts.
      Quantize can be toggled on and off on Digitone and Digitakt like so: While sequencer is running, hold down REC and press PLAY to start "live recording". While still holding down REC press PLAY button again. At the top of the display you will see that you can toggle between "Quantized live-rec" and "Unquantized live-rec"
      On the Octatrack it is different: Go to PROJECT > SYSTEM > PERSONALIZE. The first option should read "quantize live-rec". Activate it

    How do you like your Peak in comparison with DSI? I found mine a bit noisy but overall warm. Not as pristine as my Prophet 6. Thank you.

    • @cellrok
      @cellrok  5 років тому

      The peak has better built quality and easier menu layout and access. The oscillators also have more options (and wavetables too). The DSI is easy to use in terms of mod-matrix. Just hold source and wiggle destination knob to assign parameters is great (i already wrote Novation to add this feature). On the other hand, the Peak has the two Animate buttons (which can also be MIDI triggered btw!) so overall its a tie. The Effects are also better on the Peak imho. On the DSI you have more variations, but lots of menu diving there. The Peak is easier for extreme programming in my opinion, while the Rev2 gives you crystal clear barebones of standard waves. Now in terms of sound the DSI is brighter and sounds like heaven but the rest didn't strike me as justified in terms of price (the DSI knobs are wobbly and have a very short travel due to their tiny diameter). So for DSI it is more of a "sound thing", while the Peak is simply a workhorse. If you also send the Peak through a Saturator like the Analog Heat it really comes alive and sounds more organic. Only downside on the Peak is the lack of Multi-Timbral and it could use an Audio-In for those sweet FX, but yeah.. i love working with it.

    • @mike_qbik
      @mike_qbik 5 років тому

      cellrok Thank you for your thoughts and your time writing a reply. Much appreciated. I agree the DSi is very clean almost surgical clean while peak more dirty.
