These propellers are contra-rotating, as they are on the same axis. Counter-rotating is when two engines with propellers turn clockwise on one engine, anti-clockwise on the second engine.

I firmly believe all machines have their own life force , their own personalities . They are really nothing more than animated controlled kinetic energy , yet any time I see good people (nostalgic people) restoring rebuilding , and well just giving life back to these machines it gets a bit emotional , it is the fitting thing to do with these machines that have performed their duties . The machines want to run (hell they want to fly again) so letting them breath again and even if it is on the ground gives hope , to us all for a future .

I have been amazed for a lifetime at the level of development aircraft had achieved by the close of WWII. We weren't even 50 years into powered flight and yet we were screaming through the skies at over 400 MPH, while 70 MPH in a personal automobile was "screaming" on the open roads in most places. And the jet age was thrust (pun intended) upon us almost instantly and fairly well developed and maturing rapidly less than 2 decades later. Why other technology stayed almost antiquated by comparison for so long always was a mystery to me.

There were a few of what was called RB-51 or P-51XR that raced at Reno with Griffons. Red Baron, Mrs Ashley 2 and the one you probably saw Precious Metal that caught on fire after a refuel in Texas I believe while heading to Reno. None of them can match a race prepped Merlin Mustang . Though the Precious Metal team thought that they had the correct engine combination the year they lost the airplane.

@@davidmichaels8934 I know that, that's what I just said. One engine 2 props that spin in opposite of each other. I just like the sound that these cut down test props make.

Is there any reason why there is two propellers going in opposite direction ?

    • @Slash1066

Its because of the massive torque reaction that occurs with small planes with powerful engines, the engine will spin the plane as much as the prop with a single prop, the contra rotating props cancel each others torque reaction and make the plane much easier to fly since you don't have to cater for added roll caused by the engine and prop

Its due to trying to get more blade area onto a 2450hp engine without the propeller tips going supersonic. It counters P-factor to some extent, but doesn't cancel it completely. Various things were tried; some which were retained such as differing front and rear propeller diameters and blade pitch.

Look up the Griffon Budweiser hydroplane at the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum to hear a Griffon really doing something.
