Would making a Mystic character, as an NPC, but with the sheet, be a good encounter for the PCs? Okay, so the Mystic would be the same level as the PCs, but there would only be one. I wouldn’t hold back, but I would give the Mystic an absolute crap AC.
Would that be fun, yet challenging in your opinion?

Level 0 ability is to have friends. This is lost at first level
It's also valid to play in a one-shot where no one has seen a mystic in actual play as well. Because then you can admit with everyone else that it's bulls**t and never touch it again.

Me with my Level 2 Barbarian: "........oh crap. I forgot about my one of like three abilities, Reckless Attack!"
I actually did that as a mystic, where all abilities I took were control, support, and battlefield manipulation sorts.
Travel times were very nice as we could go places very quickly, but it usually left my character lacking for Psi points.
Honestly the most powerful thing about mystic is the sheer variety, not the fact that it does things better than everyone else (it does not). It can just do everything to a very good degree, which is what makes it powerful and would essentially make bards obsolete. The problem? It can do everything. You won't remember half of the things you can do, as you essentially have 70~ spells on hand at level 20. Good luck remembering all of them.
Homebrew rule that's pretty good for mystics is that they can only cast on a discipline they're focused on, meaning they essentially need to use a bonus action to switch to another 5 part spell list and cannot start incredibly stupid combos.
Meanwhile I'm here with my barbarian always forgetting those rage damage resistances... And the advantage from Danger sense.
Pretty much half of my abilities.

You know, the level 20 ability sounds like something the monk should have gotten. It makes more sense for a monk to dissolve into the power of ki and recreate itself than for a mystic to think itself back to life.
To be honest the entire Fantasy of Monks and Mystics are really really similar
The problem is, is that a 50% chance to just say 'No, that's not happening' to Death is a complete narrative breaker. Especially because its only cost is time. Taking The Tomb of Annihilation as an example, why should a party of mystics be the least bit careful when even the most lethal of traps has a 50-50 chance of being a mild inconvenience at worst.
@@adamloga3788 I feel mystic players wouldn't rely on it. It is still a 50% chance to die normally (and who trusts their dice anyways?) so it would be more like a backup plan rather than the main plan.

How to play Mystic:
Step 1) forget to ask your DM.
Step 2) build your character.
Step 3) roll a new one when the DM calmly explains how utterly broken or pitifully weak you could end up.
Step 4) Play a monk.
Then gets told to change again

@@Maximum7077 monks are very powerful, granted you have to build them correctly but they are not to be fucked with.
All you need is a high wisdom and dex score tbh, then be whatever you want. The only downside is that there arent much feats that benefit them. (Thats also the reason why i think they are the best class to start learning with)

How to make an immortal character:
Play a halfing mystic
Reach level 20
Get the lucky feat
Get the immortality boon
Get a high level wizard to cast Wish on you so your lucky feats apply to when you die.
Boom, immortal. Only downside if you’ll never have friends again.

How to achieve semi-immortality: Be a High Elf Druid or Monk, eventually achieve Timeless Body (and avoid dying in combat), then you get 7,500 years potential:)
Another even greater version be an Astral Elf version as above then go back to Astral Plane!
You get 3 more things at level 20:
1. Resistance to bludgening, slashing, and piercing damage
2. Immunity to disease and poison damage, as well as the poisoned condition
3. *You no longer age*
Let's look at that last one, it doesn't say you can still die of old age like Monk's Timeless Body does, it _only_ says you no longer age, which means that going by RAW, at level 20 a Mystic cannot die of old age
So at level 20, a Mystic can:
1. Heal themselves every time they use a discipline, to a max of 7 HP per turn, at the cost of a bonus action
2. Is immune to all disease and poison damage
3. Resists slashing, bludgening, and piercing damage (it doesn't specify non-magical)
4. Cannot die of old age
5. Has a 55%of coming back to life every time they die
At this point, you are _literally_ immortal
Don't forget that if the choose adaptive body, then they'll also be able to live without eating, drinking, sleeping, or breathing. And they gain the effects of a long rest by doing 8 hours of light activity (like reading or traveling).
So with this you could shove a Lv.20 mystic into a bag of holding and leave them there forever.
I'm making mine in the theme of a vampire. With enough time he might be able to convince the world he is.
I explained I wanted an insanity mechanic when I rolled a 1 or any number dm says. If I get too many, up to the dm discretion, I start developing negative to stats and "quirks." I would have to go on a psychic journey to remove them or find a way to "purify" through dream quests or diving into the subconscious. I find it balances out the risk reward of using the powers.

I love the level 20 ability (despite making them even harder to kill) because just imagine the mystic dying, then half a year later, the party goes to a tavern, and the guy they saw die is behind the counter serving drinks

Had a goblin immortal mystic in one of my parties once.. He was dropped a mile and only took 12 damage, dealing 126 to the enemy boss. We were a lvl 6 party. Level 6. The boss was a lvl 17 shadow sorcerer capable of one hitting any one of us. He had the help of our artificer, who had a mechanical bird that flew him a mile high giving him the drop on the boss (literally). Again, dealt over 100 damage and took 12 (falling was 20d6 and he literally 1/4'd damage while plunging attacking and adding psi to damage somehow). First and only mystic I've seen. The GM had him make a new character, and has banned mystics henceforth.
One time I played a mystic just to piss off my dm and at level one we found a goblin camp so I turned 10 feet tall and stomped them to death it was hilarious
To be fair, if your DM is having your level 6 party fight a 17th level boss, he deserved to watch it get wrecked by a mystic.

I was doing the math a mystic multiclass becomes a god. Straight up I turned a paladin into an undying monster with ranged attacks, the ability to fly, summon fire storms, regenerate health and straight up gain armor from losing armor.
that paladin became so powerful he became as powerful as the god they worship
The next thing they knew that paladin challenge his god saw his new legendary powers and committed suicide

not really, they gain most of those abilities at later levels. It was just a summary of each mystic subclass
Mystic is kinda similar to cleric now, where they pick their archetype level 1 and get extra damage 8th level.
Yeah you get a lot but at 1st level you have max of 4 psi points and can spend a max of 2 on any 1 discipline. And you don't get anything back till long rest. Most of their stuff is a minimum of 2 pain points anyways.

Have you seen the UA Psi Classes? Redonkulous. No DM should allow them either It's like they just won't stop making Psi Classes and Psi Theamed powers OP for absolutely no reason. I get trying to make Psi Powers different, but they should'nt be all that different from Spells.

Ugh... I love the theme of the Mystic. I love the idea of being able to tap into psionic abilities being a reflection of your 'inner self'. Maybe it's just me, but I've always had a soft spot for such abilities because I've also had a soft spot for all things far realm affiliated.
Basically, I really wish there was a *balanced* version of this. Pact of the Old one Warlock feels really weak, but at least in UA the sorcerer has a psionic option. I fully acknowledge that this class is busted af btw.
Im happy Psionic Soul is being published in Tasha's albeit in a form we've yet to see.
But I was scared they wouldn't be bold enough to go in on Psionics in this book.

Nerfs
NO 50/50 REVIVE AT LEVEL 20
LV 20 Instead has a Mystic be able to slowly restore hp like the lv 2 skill.
Mystics CANNOT choose another discipline.
Mystics CANNOT regain the same amount of Hp by using powers, they will only restore hp by half the pp used. This is a lv 20 skill.
Mystics can only sacrifice their HP to use powers when they run out of PP; naturally this will not restore HP.
PP now acts like a second HP pool, it can only be regained if:
You get Temporary HP or heal more than max HP, which heals PP for the respective amount, this means you cannot get Temporary HP unless you have FULL PP
You take a short rest, which heals like HP where you roll a second set of Hit Dice to determine PP restored.
You take a long rest, which restores all PP
If you try to substitute a stat check for another check, you now must spend PP
Many powers cost more a bit more PP
Each Path has a bit more versatility to choose from to compensate for 1 path only
Some smaller Powers are made universal, such as weak damage powers and weak support
Some Powers are buffed, others are nerfed
Mystic has a slightly increased max PP
Mystics gain a slow flying speed at level 12

@@GamerTowerDX We never finished the campaign, and the mystic was pretty powerful. The mystic was also a race which could fly, and the mystic would constantly use this stupid abbility which would switch two people, so she would switch with the enemy while in the air

Step 1: Accept that your DM hates you and will regret allowing you to make a mystic.

Yeah... that's basically what happened. It took awhile because I'm playing a mystic that's all support and mobility accept for Crown of Disgust. So most of the time I just made the fighter and the barbarian kill things faster or did fun things with Baleful Transposition.
Then we hit lvl 9 and I could use World of Horror...and everything went down hill from there... Now I've embraced his hatred and picked up Mastery of Light and Dark. MUHAHAHAHA!
A DM in one of my games allowed it and halfway through the first game he regretted everything.
Knowing it was my first time DMing a fellow DM unleashed this bullshit on me. The ultimate betrayal.
Funnily after people just babbling about mystic how wtfopitis instead of playing one, wait.. that happened long time ago with shaman in wow!

It's because he litteraly went through all mystic subclasses. This "lvl.1" would be litteraly 100 times longer with all wizard subclasses
@@Maximum7077 maybe it's because wizards have to pick and stick with it while it seems mystics can change it like a wizard prepares the spells of the day.
@@nathanschubert3048 mystic has to stick with his disceplines aswell and cant recover spellslots on a short rest or change his disceplines. They also are way weaker in the later game.

Here's a fun little tidbit for anyone playing a Mystic.
A Pearl of Power is a magic item that restores one spent third level spell slot once per day.
According to the Wu Jen description, that's the equivalent of 5 Psi Points.

@@theawkwardpotato1973 Well, that campaign is over. Besides, when I took advantage of Mystic being OP, it was always for the good of the party and to help others rather than for my own personal glory. I had turns in the spotlight, but I never denied anyone else theirs.

"How to play *FIHGTER* "
Orc Monk OP. Enhanced movement speed of the monk class + the Orc's Aggression Class Bonus feature means that whatever the enemy is, the Orc is gonna chase it down. Add this plus the Orc's ability to grapple enemies a size difference bigger than it. Plus the monks ability to stun/knock down and move enemies with flurry of blows. Orc Monk's are fucking terrifying when abusing terrain damage or just sheer gravity.
Oh, and also with the aggression+movement speed, a certain point Monks get the ability to walk on water and walk up vertical terrain with no difficulty check. So yeah, that is terrifying. A giant burly Orc(which mine has 20 str and 20 Dex) is sprinting up the side of the mountain to kick an archer square in the face. The archer lets loose an arrow. Monks have ability to grab melee ranged attacks and use them as a monk weapon with a ki point. My Ork Monk Uram, ran up a mountain side, the assassin archer let loose his arrow, Uram caught the arrow with his foot, while continuing the run up the mountain. Once at the assassin, Uram Dolphin kicked the assassin in the chin WITH the arrowhead imbedding into the guy's throat. Then Uram feather fall'd down the side of the mountain.
I wanna see him go all Kung Fu Panda.
I love how he's breaking. This is literally what happened when I tried out this class.... Had to make an entire rework of the class and balance as an apology to my GM.

In order to reword, you need to first even understand the class. most likely you didn't understand said class and had totally wrong view about it.
I started back in the ancient days of 2e, and remember how basically everyone I ever knew banned psionics the moment they glanced at the pscionics handbook.

Actually in a game I played with my sister, she was teleported close to another player before we all met, and she convinced him she was a god, and that he should worship her. That was quite interesting to see.
Honestly, I like the idea of a Mystic...a mentalist or psychic. I also like how they have "quirks"...unusual behaviors they must do in order to keep focus.
But I do agree...for the sake of balance, they need to adhere to a particular type of subclass...wanna read minds and have telekinesis? Do that. Wanna turn your body into iron or grow into a giant? Do that. Wanna conjure psychic weapons? Do that. Wanna teleport? Do that.
...just don't mix them. It's not only muddled; it's a large part of why Mystic isn't officially accepted. Too much inconsistency.
That Level 20 Capstone is pretty cool, though...it has a lot of lore possibility...did the mystic die and rebuild their body through force of will...or did they create an entirely new reality?!

Tony Favilla yeah Psionics need to be categorized better they kind of get everything so there are no archetypes and there should be 100%. DnD in essence is balanced around archetypes and labels they're a part of a classes identity.

It being put on DMsguild doesn't make it official. There's a lot of homebrew on there.
It's on DM's Guild FROM WOTC. So it's the same level of official as the Ebberron guide, i'd assume.
The nice thing about D&D however, is that you can change and shift around what's official at your leisure.
Just because its "official" doesn't mean its AL legal.
Per AL rules you are allowed to use the players handbook plus one other officially published book.
Mystic hasn't appeared in any official books (as far as I'm aware of) so its not AL legal.
You can do what you want with your home game but dont dont think you can bring that to a game of Adventures Leage.

I laughed a bit hard when Tim's like "Jacob, it's not that op, it's the weakest ability of them all." Then Jacob loses his shit as I had. lvl 4 you can just be proficient in any saving throws after a quick power nap of thirty minute short rest. That is ridiculous. And it's only 4th level....
It's not ridicilous. Why? That is because you don't know for sure what sort of encounters you will have during the day. However I find it hilarious that you guys don't find paladin's aura as OP....
@@Tespri It is ridiculous, if you notice a pattern of what saves you're dm is mostly using, like dex, con and wis are incredibly common saving throws throughout encounters and adventures. so if you're character is able to switch their saves on the fly by simple going and taking a power nap or just sitting down for half an hour, enjoy some rations and blamo, dude is now able to get proficiency in saving throw of choice. That at level four is really good. Maybe not broken, but incredibly over powered for early level gameplay.

It's DM dependant, also paladin gives save bonus to literally every saving throw. And again... Mystics are not able to switch their saves on the fly. They cannot do it during the encounter. They actually need to have a long rest before doing so.
Geez... Only people who don't know how to build strong characters and don't know much about the classes and game rules get butthurt over mystic. I can build far more powerful builds from official materials than mystic.

I had a Mystic in one of my campaigns who was technically 2 characters in one.
The player couldn't decide between Mystic and Ranger, so I worked into his backstory that he was in fact 2 souls battling for control over 1 body.
In practice, what it meant was that whenever I got sick of his Mysticness, I could just force a Wisdom saving throw which, if failed, would switch him over to the Ranger personality. Made for great roleplay, especially in earlier parts of the campaign when each personality would have no idea what was going on unless they were 'active'.
I love how when cycling through the Avatar options, Jacob says The Last Airbender first. Followed by blue people. Yeah... Last Airbender is better.

To emphasize how op Mystics are, I made an orc mystic, I rolled until I got at least one 3. I put that 3 in intelligence, and with my -2 I now had 1.
Despite having a 1 in my primary stat, it never mattered. None of my abilities ever cared about my intelligence score.
I played that character for one session before we decided to retcon it all.
To be fair, with a 1 in int, you would have to basically roleplay someone who is braindead.

And that character was very much brain dead. He was essentially just an Ork from 40k.
Eh, not really, an regular Ork from 40k would probably have an intelligence of 5-6, since they're able to speak. An intelligence of 1 would be a beetle, specifically a Giant Fire Beetle, or a Swarm of Beetles.
A 1 intelligence isn't brain dead, it would be like being under the Feeble Mind spell but without the Charisma debuff. Your response to a Wall would be to either go over it, through it, or around it. All without help of any tools, since using tools is a smart thing to do.
Playing a Intelligence 1 Mystic wouldn't make the class all that weaker, but it'd make a weak as hell character. Cause you ain't out thinking ANYTHING. Except maybe a rock, though that would quite be challenge.
Depending on your DM, I probably would've ruled that because your Int was 1, you wouldn't have been able to any of the Telepathy ability since Creatures with an Int Score of 2 or lower are incapable of speech. Not to mention, once you hit level 14, you would be subtracting 5 from any damage roll you make for a psionic talent. Not to mention you're Discipline DC would be weak/s**ty & you would be relying heavily on the d20 roll for Discipline Attacks because until you get to Level 17, your Discipline Attack Modifier would go from non-existent to "1" as it's your Proficiency Bonus + Int Modifier.
Because your Discipline DC (8 + Prof Bonus + Int Mod) would progress as: 5 -> 6 -> 7 -> 8 -> 9. So unless the NPC's/MoB's roll just as equally as s**ty to combat your very low Discipline DC, they'll pretty much pass it a majority of the time. Honestly, I'm curious as to what your other Stats were at as well as what Talent(s), Mystic Order, & Discipline(s) you took for that initial Session, especially if you started out at level 1 for that initial Session.

me too. in our campaign we play as historical figures from our real world but they can be any race. im playing as mystic Rasputin. I don't do anything game breaky or overtly op just be a real douche and persuade and deceive with my high char and convince them im not a bad guy when im neutral evil and just drink and fuck and the occasional party healing/ buffing to be likeable and needed. its hilarious I don't do anything just plant ideas in my followers heads to take out or remove opposition npcs lol, mean while I don't do anything I just sit back act like "what? what did I do?"oh yea I role play this all in the thickest, deepest Russian accent lol

The archetypes of magic are really limited and it makes more sense that this is more their spelization.
Meanwhile for mystics... That sorta excuse doesn't exactly work as well.
But it makes no sense from a lore perspective. The Mystic Orders made their disciplines specifically for their own order, so it makes no sense that any Mystic from any order can learn any discipline they wanted. It would be like a Sun Soul Monk being able to take abilities from the Four Elements subclass because g a m e p l a y
Honestly i'm just gonna address the 3 replies i got on this since they had a lot of good points, Yes a lot of Mystic disciplines are absolutely insane, Psionic weapon being able to do 7d10 is ridiculous, and a lot of them need to be nerfed hard. Also, there are about 3 Nomad disciplines and 0 soul knife ones, I'm sure that if they balanced out the amount of disciplines between archetypes, the "There are no divination spells so this argument is invalid" thing would be a bit more correct. And finally, the different archetypes gain different abilities, and that's where the choosing of archetypes comes in, their also more proficient with disciplines of their archetype, like how Wizards can cast spells of different types, but they're more effective with a certain school, so they *can* take spells from different schools of magic, but they are more effective with a certain type. And it's the same reasoning for why Mystics are able to grab more of archetype specific disciplines. And though there are definitely a decent portion of disciplines that should be archetype specific, like how Brute Force should be able to be used by the tank Immortal mystics and doesn't really make sense for Awakened ones, that doesn't mean all of them need the same treatment, kind of like Warlock Pacts.
Except that wizards can’t really be tanks... or healers. Or stealthy bois. Not like mystics can. Mystics can do whatever they want.

Honestly, the Level 20 ability is basically flavor. At that point your party should be able to retrieve your body from any point in the multiverse in a matter of hours and cast True Resurrection on you.
In fact this ability would probably be more of a hassle than a boon since if you somehow manage to die on an Outer Plane, that means your party is going to have to wait there for 1d10 days to get you.
That ability is beaten entirely by a 13th level cleric plane-shifting themselves back from the after life because fuck you, the rules don't say I can't do it
Funny thing incidentally is that the level 20 ability is actually pretty bad. Sure, it saves you from death, but it's only a 50% chance, and more to point puts you out of action for up to 3 days, potentially more if you respawn somewhere other than where the party is.
I actually like the Mystic class myself, but recognise it has some power creep issues.I think Mike Mearls is going in completely the wrong direction by trying to give away some of its abilities to the other classes with his new "Psion" class.
Quick thing, you choose where you respawn.
Right it doesn't mean that your party will be there though for all you know since you died the party got TPK'd since you were the only thing keeping such weak infants alive at this point as you take out waves of enemies yourself.
You're absolutely right just a maths error there. It's a 55% chance, since it says 10 or higher. 1 through 9 is a failure, making 9 possibilities for failure. 11 through 20 is a success, making 11 possbilities for success. Total 11 in 20 or 55% chance of coming back to life.
So just on side, normally if you would want something like that you would have to sell your soul to Levistus and then it would be a one time use. So you basically get 55% of the times you should die, the power from a leader of one layer in the nine hells
Actually you also get resistant to all physical damage and you gain immunity to poison and disease
I once DMed a party of all Mystics, and then there was an NPC Blood Hunter...
I learned my mistake when the level 3 Mystic soloed a Wraith.

My group had a fun encounter with mystic.... so thing is one of the other party members had lost his character, and I was curious of the mystics power, so I took him and the DM aside and informed them that the mystic is a pathway to many powerful abilities, many of wich considered... unnatural. Long story short I got DM to agree to let him use a mystic and him to agree mystic was the best choice.
So he shows up as this really whimpy naive dude who happens to be a super powerful mystic, with insane intelligence but low in the rest.
Basicly he he ends up being really powerful and we are at awe about his powers, he only gets to use ithem like... twice though.
We had to take this obviously dangerous barbarian lunatic with us, and eventually we had to split the party in groups of two, wich included the barb (who was an NPC and we had orders to keep an eye on hi mso we coldnt leave him)
We decided to have the mystic go with him.
The barb betrayed him and attacked, missed all his attacks on the surprise round.
Our mystic was like "Oh my, it appears he is trying to kill me...." (he was overly polite)
The barb attacks him again (he won initiative, and he is duel wielding... this is the insane part and why our mystic didnt get to use more powers)
The barb makes one attack, crits the mystic and rolls incredibly high.
He makes his second attack, crits him *again* and rolls just as high.
Attacks a third time.... *critting him again* wich killed him.
And that is why our mystic didnt last long.
It was... kind of interesting of a moment though. Very fascinating.
sisters barbarian is an NPC controller the DM I'm going to make an executive assumption and say that the DM was sick of dealing with the mystic shit or looked it up online and then got terrified of how OP it would be at later levels. I've rarely seen anyone roll three Crits in a row, that shit only happens if you sacrifice your first born to Gary gygax or something

The biggest issue with the Mystic class is that most of the orders are the FOUR psionic classes from 4E... They put FOUR CLASSES into one and added more features!

they just meshed all 10 of Dreamscarred Presses' Psionic classes into one and called it a day
