The clips or "brakes" on the 2 gears apply a drag upon the gears , but only when not engaged in the flywheel or starter motor, either one of those engaged and spinning our gears far overpower any drag the clips provide, however after the starters disengaged it stops the freewheeling on the starters gears and once the flywheels gear is disengaged then the brakes will slow the gear, but the real purpose of the cli on the traveling gear is to stop it from spinning with the splined gear , it applies drag to the traveler so it may be hurled outwards to the flywheel.
I just wanted to clarify the reason that the spring clip is there on the #2 idler gear that engages the flywheel. Considering the fact that the spline shaft throws the gear out, as well as turns the gear, the gear has to remain still in order for the gear to be thrown out completely. If the spring clip, "brake" is loose (lost it's tension, or "braking" effect), the gear will start to turn prematurely, not engage fully, and grind against the back of the flywheel.
hey man nice video hope u can help me with my virago 1100 i want to know what is the boost sensor ?because my bike is making explotions when i move the boost sensor can you please tell me what is it for!!
Did you buy these parts from Yamaha or are they available after market? Yamaha wants 494.00 for what you changed out. My starter is fine as I bench tested it. Great video and this helped me out a lot. Taking the cover off this weekend.
no no no !!!!! do not put back the spring ( at 0.28 between your wrists) THAT is the problem. Leave the spring out and problem solved !!!! please remove this video!
What a waste of time, you Sir sound as if you are making this video in the middle of the freeway! put the plugs in the bike and start it! show us that it is fixed!

Where is a good place to get the spring clips for idler #2 and a clip for the starter gear? I have an '83 750 with these pieces missing.
There is a new video where the replacement parts do not come with the spring, and Yamaha is saying not to use the spring.
bluebluebluebird what's the name of the video

depending on the bendex there are two different gears one with more aggressive turn rate.
