W124 Replacing Front Wheel Bearing

In this video we replace the front wheel bearings on the W124. It really does help to have a hydraulic press to replace the bearing races. If the races are in decent condition and you just want to replace the bearings themselves, you wont need a press.

A bicycle headset press is cheap and will get those races in straight

Have you ever had to re-adjust the bearings after setting them as per the MB method? I did this on my w124 exactly as per the book and they ended up with too much play after only a few test drives and had to adjust them using the old fashioned way- tight up the whole way till cant turn then back off slightly.

I've never had any complaints after doing them so I really couldn't tell you. If I can't find the dial indicator because it's in use, I'll do it your way, it gets it really close.

MBs fantastic W124 engineering once again comes to light. Do current MBs share this retainer design?

No they don't. The new vehicle have sealed bearings hubs that bolt on.

Have you seen enough of the newer cars to suggest W212 or W213 from a reliability standpoint? E350 vs. E400

I'd personally choose the W212 E350 over the E400. Especially the later years of the W212 with the M272 after they ironed out the issues. So no balance shaft issues.
