    So you have this piece of branch crotch wood and you'd like to make a bowl. Why not make TWO BOWLS? I'll so you how I turned two crotch wood live edge bowls from this one crotch in this video. Live edge bowls are beautiful expressions of the underlying wood structure and you're never sure what you might get until you turn the bowl.

    The camera angle during the interior hollowing portion of this video is priceless. It really shows what the gouge is doing, just as your narration explains the move in detail. I'm sure you hear this quite often, but you are an excellent craftsman AND instructor. I am not a novice turner, and first started turning over 15 years ago. (I did take a long 10+ year break from turning and have just started turning again.) I just want to say that I have learned more from you, than I had in the first few years of turning. Polymerization of linseed oil involves heating to 572 degrees F for an extended period of time, so yes boiled linseed oil is polymerized to change the chemical structure (hydrolysis) of the oil to increase viscosity (saturating) and reduce drying time. Its similar to hydrogenating fats to make them thicker and smoother (saturated fats are bad for you). Tung oil is treated in a similar manner as is shellac. Love turning crotch wood winged bowls. Thanks for the video.

      A little more info: Most boiled linseed oils contain cobalt and manganese salts to aid drying. Tried and true does not.

    You do good work and this question has little to do with your current video. - - - You (and others) have referred to the dowel cut in (for the 4-Jawed Chuck) as a "tenon". To me (as well as many others), a "Tenon" is a square or rectangular section fashioned onto the end of a board to be received (in most cases) by a mortice. Since any object being turned is (or will be) round, is it not a dowel ? - - - A vase, bowl, lamp, or candle stick is a dowel until it is a finished product. Why do some woodworkers call this a "tenon" ?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 роки тому

      Hm? You have me thinking on this one now. LOL Well, if the tenon were viewed from the side, it is clearly a tenon. Because it is cylindrical, I think this is where you're having trouble viewing this as a tenon. If a straight mortise channel was cut in a board to the right size, the bowl's tenon would slide right in. Essentially, the chuck is the receiving mortise. It just also happens to be able to expand and contract. Hope that helps. Happy Turning!

  • @Volksaholic

    I am late to your channel and just getting back into turning. As others have said, you do an excellent job of talking through your reasoning and technique. Super helpful! One comment about your direction of cut; i could never really get my head around the "cutting downhill" rule of turning but your video on cutting with the grain supported cleared it up for me. You mention several times in this video that you're cutting "unsupported" to preserve the bark, and it think that might be clearer by saying the cut direction is supporting the bark. At least that's the way I interpreted it.

    Dear Kent, I have a wood pile of Desert Ash street trees with plenty of crotch pieces - a metre or more across. I think I need a bigger lathe! My best straight piece is 1800mm long x 1000mm diameter. {6’x3’}. That should give me a long term supply of timber.
    … and by the way, the correct pronunciation of polymerised is “pol-im-er-eyes-ed”. Have fun.

    Unrelated Question:
    Why does no one seem turn in reverse, rotate away, and attack the interior across the center to right interior side of the bowl, doing both pull and push cuts, and then a carbide scrape for the top undercut interior? I find it easier since my headstock doesn’t rotate, especially when hollowing a small bowl with a small access hole above.
    I know you’ll have a great answer..;

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 роки тому

      Robert, good question. That is definitely a way to approach the interior, if you'd like. Just be sure to use a set screw on your faceplate or chuck. If they loosen up with a slight catch, etc, they will quickly unscrew themselves from the lathe. Happy Turning!

  • @kevingeaney7741
    @kevingeaney7741 3 роки тому +3

    Great video Kent, you did everything perfectly. Please be patient with me as I emphasise a point which you did correctly, but which a new comer might miss: - that beautiful crotch grain only exists in the centre of the log, where you drew the line, ie, 25 to 30 mm on either side of that line where you cut it with the bandsaw. The wood closer to the bark has none of that crotch grain. That is why you made the cut face into the outside of the bowl. If the bark side was made into the outside of the bowl you would lose the crotch grain as you hollowed it out.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl

    So, how come you didn't just cut a relief in the bottom to expand the chuck in so you didn't have to fart around with that silly jam chuck to cut off the tenon? That relief just becomes your foot. Also why didn't you just sand the back of the bowl when you first cut it instead of after you'd turned it around and go the motor in the way?

    Thank you for all the videos! It has been a great help to me as a beginning bowl turner. I have a question about how you deal with the warping and distortion as the bowl dries. Normally, I would use a twice turn approach to deal with the warping. However, in this case, the bowl is turned to a finished form while green; is there a secret to prevent it from warping as it dries?

      No secret. These will distort like any green woodturning. However, because of their irregular shape, the distortion is barely noticeable. Happy Turning!

    This video is very timely for me. I have a Japanese maple crotch (slightly smaller as yours) cut last summer. I've wondered how best to turn it. It may have a bark inclusion down into the crotch which might weaken the piece. I'll get a better idea after I bandsaw it in half. I hope it turns out; it will be a gift to my younger daughter (it was her tree).

I have heard negative opinions/remarks about jaws that have parallel grooves. It is difficult to see closeups of the jaws for every chuck I have looked at on line. Kirk, you are my wood turning swami. I have learned so much from you. One question, I’m doing a twice turned live edge bowl now. How do you recommend I preserve the live edge. I’m thinking to cover in thin CA before my final turning. Especially as I accidentally knocked a chunk off when rough turning. I Used medium CA to restore that.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 роки тому

      Rob, you can apply CA at the base of the bark to help it hold on. Remember not all woods will work the same. It is common for the bark to pop off. Try different tree species to find one that works best for live edge work. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    Hi Kent. How do you prevent the bark edge from falling off once the bowl is finished?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 роки тому

      Good question. Allow the piece to dry slowly. The oil helps slow a fast dry time. It really depends of the tree species and other conditions. Some trees will almost flick off their bark instantly and others seem to bond the bark to the wood like cement. Experiment with different varieties and you'll find a good candidate for live edge turnings. Also, try to harvest the wood in the winter when there is less activity between the bark and the wood, in the cambium layer. Happy Turning!
