A good teacher knows what is going through the student's head as they watch, and explaining what they are seeing, and using language that they can understand, is a sure sign of the gift of teaching. Excellent longer video. Many thanks.
Rarely do I sit for one hour videos... great job.
Thank you, Norman. Me either. LOL But some are worth the time. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Ken, newbie to your material, also very new to turning in general. I could not turn off this video because of the way you produced it and the amount of instruction you provide throughout. Your reference to posted material is amazing and I feel I will be investing time learning more from you going forward. I’m excited to have found you!
Thank you, Jim and welcome. I have courses that will streamline your learning process, if you'd like. www.TurnAWoodBowl.com/courses All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Hey Kent, I like the start to finish longer videos. You are the man! You are in my top 5 for woodturning videos. Thanks for the time and effort.
Wood turning brought to you by Tom Selleck. Very good narration.
Wow, thanks. I'll have to grow my mustache out a bit. lol ;) Happy Turning!
Thank you Kent for another grest video. I appreciate you explaining everything and every step you do while turning. Really helps me in my turning. Thank-you!
You're doing a great job of demonstrating the art of bowl turning. I want to get into this and will be watching as many of your videos as possible. Thank you so much!
Thank you and welcome. If you're new to turning I wish you al the best and I can tell you look forward to having some fun! Happy Turning!
Great video, thanks. I enjoy the mix of short and longer 'start to finish' videos as provides a full learning experience. I was initially a little hesitant at the length of the video, until I started watching as it was full of relevant content.
I love the ebonizing! Another thing to try one of these days. Thanks
I sooo loved this Ken. Sooo beautiful and wonderful to watch start to finish. Thank you.
Just stumbled into your bowl video and even though I've been turning for years, I had an eye opening moment and now have subscribed, liked and look forward to more. Great job, thanks.
You are an excellent instructor and I swear you have a video on anything wood turning. Thank you for your time.
Wow, thank you! Much appreciated. Have you seen my website? It's got more. lol ;) Happy Turning!
A great video! Love the format; seeing a piece from start to finish works well thank you. Jim (Leeds, UK)
It is always a joy watching one of Kent's tutorials. I have been into wood turning for just over a year, and I went in hard. I am still working on my technique without actually going to any classes. I must say though, watching your videos are informative, and relaxing at the same time. Nothing wipes away the stresses of the day, as doing some turning (so long as nothing goes wrong of course). Thank you Kent, and keep up the great work.
That is awesome! Thank you, Spenser for writing and sharing. I'm glad these videos help and connect with you. Yes, turning is the best to wash away troubles. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
I think your analysis of turning videos is spot on. The start-to-finish video with footnotes to explore intermediate techniques in other videos is a great way to approach the subject. It's also an easy way for me to locate information when I'm looking for a refresher on a subject. I really appreciate your efforts to produce quality videos.
I watched the entire video hoping to see the bowl get finished to end since this was a long video but no you pulled the rug out from under me. I really enjoy the way you teach. I learn allot from you. You explain things in a way I can understand it & put it to use. ....🇺🇸GrUmPy🇺🇸....
Kent, I sure enjoy your videos, I saw the one you did on the different methods of ebonizing and this fits nicely with the project today. I appreciate you going through the steps of getting that elegant curve on the outside of the bowl, the description and technique are helpful.
Hi Kent. I am not a woodturner, rather I am a disabled & retired Senior Master of Art (teacher) from South Australia & so I tend to look at things with the eye of an Artist. I watch a huge number of woodturning videos because I wanted to take up woodturning as a hobby in my retirement. Alas my disabilities caught up with more rapidly than hoped for & by the time I got a lathe & got it installed, I was no longer able to hold the gouges with any real degree of safety so now I watch woodturning videos by the dozens & admire the skills of others. I believe there was clearly a huge display of the Artist/Craftsman in this video & the skills you have developed. It was also a very educational video which is what you intended. Very well done my friend & I will watch many more. Don from South Aust.
Don, thank you so much for your very kind and thoughtful words! I'm sorry you are unable to turn, but glad you find enjoyment watching these videos. I wish you all the best. Please take care and thank you again kindly!
Thanks, picked up a few things to try on the lathe today. I like the long videos - I feel I have most of the basic techniques down so I am less likely to search for specific shorter videos unless I need a refresher. I enjoy the longer videos to see the thought process and how you make certain decisions as the wood reveals itself.
Love seeing a mulberry turning video when ive got some mulberry lying around
I do love the mulberry! It almost looks like alabaster when completely dried. Very good tutorial, I always learn so much watching your videos!
Hey Kent - I gotta say that I was so engrossed with your video that I was shocked to see that an hour had gone by without even realizing it. It is so refreshing to find someone willing to buck the trend of 5 or 6 minute 'tutorial' videos. I am very glad I came across your channel all those weeks ago. Keep them coming!
Glad you enjoyed it and I'm doing my best to add the most value as far as bowl turning knowledge. Thank you. Happy Turning!
I love the longer format. So much information to grasp as a new turner. Keep up the great work.
Great video. Thank you for doing them. They're really educational and helpful.
Just right! You went through the steps in a timely way. I don't believe any were over done. Thanks, GB
The longer format is great for demonstrating a “process”. This bowl design and creation was very helpful. I’m getting back into turning after a 10 year break and I’m watching a lot of different turners on UA-cam. There are a lot of great turners but I think I get more out of your videos than anyone’s.
Longer videos are fine as long as there’s no waste of time. Your videos are full of instruction. Keep it up. Great stuff.
I was mesmerised.. I really was. Beautifully done, shot and explained
Thanks
another well done video -- Thank You! I like both the specific/short formats and the longer/complete formats -- both very helpful and meet different needs.
So informative and professional. I really appreciate the longer videos. Never watched you before. Bn turning stair parts between centres for a good few years but now taking early retirement I would like to start to turn bowls. I think I have so much to learn as technology and techniques have moved on so much. But with the quality instructional videos you are putting out I feel in safe hands. You have me hooked! Have a good Christmas and God bless. George from Ireland.
Awesome, thank you! Glad you're hooked, turning bowls is fantastic! Happy Turning!
Really appreciate your teaching and commitment to creating informational content. You turning skills are incredible and I hope to get good through watching your tutorials. Happy turning
👍👌 Beautiful "WORKING" and common sense easy to understand video. The MICROWAVE working is new to me, I've got to see!
THANKS for the watch-along!!! 😍😍😍😍😍
Great video Kent, always pick up some tips from you, thanks for sharing.
As a newbie to wood turning these video’s are the best way for me to learn. Watch and then have a go myself.
Thanks for your efforts to produce them it is really appreciated.
Very nicely done. It is not an ego show like most other You Tubers do but an actual learning experience. Thank you for adding quality back into this media
@@TurnAWoodBowl I have been turning for 18 years and have done numerous club demos and some regional demos as well. That said there is always something to learn and especially this year without the face to face contact it is more difficult to learn and review. I spend about 30 hours the end of each year and review my work in comparison to others and review my techniques. Your videos will be a great addition to the review process. Thank you again.
That was great teaching on bowl turning. The bowl was very nice proportionately laid out. The color is magnificent.
Thanks Kent. Just starting and this was very helpful. Looking forward to viewing more of your videos.
What i like to do i when i am finished a green bowl blank, i turn the lathe up to full speed and let centrifugal force release some moisture and bring the it to the outside of the bowl. You know its working when you can feel the water getting flung out! Great video as always Kent!
Thanks. Be careful turning over 1,000 rpm. Lathe speed video coming soon. Happy Turning!
New sub here. It's a pleasure to watch another artist ply his craft. And you my friend, are an artist. That was such a beautiful piece of wood as well. And this is not a critique, just a personal choice, but I cried just a bit when that gorgeous buttery outside grain got covered up though you are right that it does compliment that butteryness on the inside. On the other hand, I learned how to deal with an exterior that might not be as gorgeous so thank you for the idea. I haven't had any time to turn since I started my Friday night livestream as it has consumed all of my time for the last two years because of the intense production that goes into it (I'm a music man), but you make me want to warm up the lathe again!
Thank you for writing and sharing your kind words! Yes production for these videos is time consuming too. I can relate. All the best to you and Happy Turning (in the future)!
Love the content. Both styles of videos serve a purpose. Great looking bowl. Thanks.
I’m new to woodturning, so pleased I found your channel. I think this is the second video of yours I’ve seen. Love the long format as I can see questioned I have answered as you progress through the stages. I will be going back through your tutorials and tips for sure!
Awesome, thank you! Yes, the long format has been popular so you will find many from me. Enjoy and Happy Turning!
If you are NEW to turning, skip these videos and go to VIMEO and watch Stuart Batty.
Got right on Amazon and ordered a bottle of ink. Turned an Osage bowl, ebonized it and wow...people love the technique. Thanks
Thank you for the start to finish videos. I learn so much more.
You are so welcome! Glad you are enjoying and learning from them. Happy Turning!
The closeup shots of the gouge as you worked the inside of the bowl were great! There was noting left to the imagination.
Great video as always, I was just wondering if you’ve made a video on making end grain bowls because sketchy things happen when I do
Such a beautiful color; love the contrast with the ebonized exterior. Interesting point about the moisture relief once the interior was cored out (straw analogy appreciated). Great editing as always. So much teaching in a single video!
Thank you.
Excellent, Kent!! Lots of great detail, easy to follow demos and great explanations. This has to be one, if not the best, one stop UA-cam channels on teaching/refreshing the memory on wood turning. I will need to visit much more often.
Keep those wood shavings flying!!!!
Really like the longer videos. I like the continuity of the different concepts. Great job of explanation. Many thanks!
I learned a great deal from this especially turning the inside of the bowl. I wasn’t keeping my gouge at 45 and walking it in. Ty
I like having multiple topics per video. I like the project based instruction where you share your strategy and various "fixes" when necessary.
It “turned” out lovely. Japanese style simplicity. Fits my style Big time. 🇩🇰🤗Britt from Denmark
Thank you Kent for this woodturning video. This is very good to me to learn.
Thank you so much for your very informative video.I really appreciate your very clear descriptions simple and precise, for of all the processes involved in making your beautiful bowl.I am have just started turning and am so fortunate to have found your site.
I liked and subscribed and wish you many more.
One more time, you offer us a really great demonstration of different skills in wood turning. Thanks Kent. 👍
Just found this....I'll be buying a wood turning lathe and getting into wood turning soon (after we move house) This will be my go to channel for my education. Thanks.
Sounds great! Thank you and welcome! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
I'VE ALWAYS LIKED WORKING WITH WOOD BECAUSE MY DAD MADE ALL KINDS OF WOOD PROJECTS HE ALSO CARVED A LOT OF WOOD TO AND I LOVED TO WATCHED HIM ALL THE TIME AND I LEARNED MORE BY WATCHING HIM THEN I DID HANDS ON BUT I ALWAYS LEARNED MORE FROM MY DAD WATCHING AND LISTENING TO HIM THAN I DID FROM A BOOK BUT ENOUGH ABOUT THAT I'M SORRY THAT MY STORY WAS SO LONG BUT HOW COULD I OF EXPLAINED IT WITH OUT THE STORY BEING SO LONG IT COULD OF BEEN A LOT LONGER WELL TAKE CARE AND STAY SAFE
Curtis, Thank you for writing and sharing! It sounds like your dad is a big influence on you. That's fantastic! What a blessing to have that experience!!! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
I enjoy the longer video, seeing the bowl process start to finish. Thanks!
Another wonderful video! You’re a great teacher! I can’t wait to get my shop set up and start turning!!!
Kent,
I am extremely thankful for the videos you put out. I am on my sixth bowl and have learned oodles watching your channel!!
Kent. I have recently discovered your channel. You are doing a great job. I have a renewed interest in turning bowls. I have used a microwave to dry various projects, including bowls. I call my process ‘ 30/30 ‘. I wrap the piece in two or three layers of newspaper. Microwave for 30 seconds then leave it undisturbed in the oven for 30 minutes. After thirty minutes you will find the moisture has migrated to the paper. Repeat process until paper emerges dry. Less scientific than weighing but end result is dry ( equalized ) moisture, ready for finish. David Brooks, Cool-n-Organic Woodwork. 🤠
Loved the video. Very well explained. I have a better understanding of twice turning, the role of microwave, ebonization & finally what to do with boring wood! Thank You Sir from across the sea...
Wonderful! You are welcome, from across the sea! ;) All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thank you so much Kent for that long and marvelous video! I love it!!
I've just finish a bowl similar to yours but not so pretty and perfect! So I'm gonna make an other one thinking on what you teach me!!
I guess 80%I know is what you teach me thank you so much for the long time you spend for the beginners like me
Awesome video! I’m new to turning and really appreciate the tips and tricks.
this has to be the best video of bowl turning. thanks for all the information on it.
I'm not a newbe but I watched every bit and used it to calibrate my technique. Well done, thanks.
I liked and subscribed because you were explaining everything in great detail. I learned more about wood turning from this one video than most other turning videos combined. Thank you! I will continue to watch and learn from you as I search for my own lathe and turning tools to start my own turnings. You are the Paul Sellers and Rob Cozman of wood turning.
Wow! Thank you for the fine compliment. I'm very appreciative! Welcome and enjoy! Happy Turning!
Great techniques, worth the watch... Thanks for the great information....
Really inspiring work! I appreciate this channel so much. Thank you for your time to share your wealth of knowledge and experience with us!
Thank you for writing and sharing! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thanks for the multitude of tips and tricks. Really like the start to finish with thorough explanations.
Hi Kent, I am a beginner, and learned so much from this "start to finish" video. I'll be watching...probably all of them! Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you so much. I'm thrilled you're enjoying them. Happy Turning!
Another great learning video!!
Thank you. I do apppreciate the start to finish approach that help developing a routine. One can always accelerate parts that he or she controls.
Have a nice day
Thanks, Kent, for your personal response to our emails. I have made two or three responses over the past year and you have personally responded to each. I appreciate your lessons very much and will keep watching more to learn all I can from you.
You're very welcome. I'm just trying to help you turn the wood bowls you imagine possible. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Very informative for me. The long videos are fine in my book. Thanks Kent.
First time watching one of your videos. I think it's the right length for a full project turning lesson. Still working on spindle turning skills now, but bowls are in my future. I need to look up some of your others, such as handling the bowl gouged and microwave drying. Thank you.
Awesome, thank you! Welcome to bowl turning. Careful, you might get hooked! ;)
This is a wonderful project and process, Kent. The longer video is nice since it's so full of good information. I have to try an ebony finish on a future bowl(s). I have many sugar maple and cherry blanks air-drying that might look good this way. Your videos and information are the best.
Thanks, Paul. Much appreciated. Yes, try ebonizing, it's pretty fun! Happy Turning!
I enjoyed everything you taught. I learn almost as much by watching as by doing. Great job!
I like your long video. Like you said, several methods , interesting comments from you during the turning.
I'm learning a lot and it is fun to see how a normal piece of wood become a beautiful bol.
Don't stop your excellent teaching job!!
Great video. Appreciate all the details & explanations. Keep on turning. Like the longer, full detail mode of the start to finish. Thanks again.
Thank you for sharing your outstanding skills, I love how you explain not only how it’s done but why. I just subscribed. Looking forward to watching and learning.
The great thing I like about your video is that you stop the lathe frequently so we can see what’s going on and where we are with the chunk of wood. Thanks Randall
Thanks 👍 Yeah, no mysterious turning that you have to watch to the end to see the results. ;) Happy Turning!
Really great! The time spent on close ups on bowl gauge angles is REALLY HELPFUL! Thank you! Your're a wonderful instructor.
Great Video! Thanks for all you do for us who are trying to learn to turn.
Excellent video. I came across your videos recently, and I wish I had found these when I first started turning. The process and techniques are very detailed and presented very well. The closeup shots are very helpful as well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge to help others like myself.
Loved it. You’re a talented instructor. In response to your question, yes, it was a bit too long for me, but I’m only a viewer, not a wood turner.
Thank you for actually TEACHING! The vast majority of turning videos are both intriguing and frustrating for a beginner like me, because there’s no explanation of anything. Just shots of chips flying. Nothing about the speed of the lathe, the tool being used, the angle holding the tool etc. I think we’re expected to watch and go “ah, wonderful!” And be amazed. Like so many things in this world turning looks easy as pie when someone with skills and lots of practice does it. An onlooker might think “That’s not so hard. Anyone could do that.” But as you know so well, and thank you for sharing, there’s a lot more to it than meets the beginner’s eye.
Mike, Thank you for writing and sharing! Yes, I want to teach you! Thanks for your support! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
