We shared with you last week the challenges and struggles we’ve been having running our small business from the other side of the country. Who are we?
We're Tyler and Todd, a married couple from Canada that had been traveling across the USA in our self-renovated RV with our two dogs, Charlie and Eddie. How did we get here?
After a year of traveling around North America in our RV we found ourselves in Tampa, Florida when the global pandemic hit and made the decision to return home to Canada after our government urged travellers to return home. Unsure what the future held and how long we’d be staying put, we bought a 10 acre piece of land in Nova Scotia, Canada to park our RV. To keep our idle hands busy we’ve converted our into a fully functioning off-grid tiny home, complete with a fireplace and a composting toilet. Realizing we’d want to travel again in the future, we spent the summer renovating a new RV and explored Eastern Canada while the weather was still warm but now that we’re headed into winter and back in our off-grid tiny house until who knows when…it’s time to start building something a little bigger like a cabin in the woods!

Neither of us expected this to be as emotional as it was...we've been taking our time with boxing things up and closing this chapter of our life. As much as we want to get back to the land, it's important to sort through these emotions as well as the stuff. One thing I've learned thru experience in my 66 years of life: when financial/business challenges arise, don't panic, don't give them angst and worry. Breathe deeply, stay open and remember, it will resolve. You have health, wonderful love, great fur buddies, wonderful families. You have all the important, irreplaceable elements in life. Money issues will be resolved and likely in a couple months you'll barely remember 'em. Promise!

@@tanschi8449 This is the most challenging time in so many ways for so many of us! The past years (esp if you're in the US) have been stress piling on seemed like every day! Take it a day at a time, or hour at a time if you need to,
and just keep telling yourself "I will be OK" Another tool I use: it's the mind that likes to mess with us. So I have sticky notes all over my house. And when I sense myself going into that scary downward spiral of worrying, stressful thinking, I make myself focus on whatever positive thoughts are on the notes. And I say them out loud to myself, replacing the negative thoughts with positive, breathing deeply, and don't stop until I feel lighter. Make up some sayings that work for you, discard what doesn't help and really do not allow your mind to make your fear bigger and scarier.

Travelling across our beautiful country is not always easy, especially when you need to get to Edmonton from Nova Scotia in winter and during a pandemic. Wow, you did it in seven (?) hours!
Thanks so much for sharing the early story of your lives together. Returning “home” to a house, a city, or a province always feels different for me.
Returning to a place often brings back special memories that touch us deeply. Such Remembering is good. It “heartens” us as we move forward making new memories.

I always believed you about the life you'd left behind to live a simpler life that actually fulfilled you but to actually see it was still an eye opener. Now I'm even more impressed with the no electricity, no running water travel trailer simplicity you have chosen for this phase of your lives. The house in Edmonton is beautiful. It's easy to see you guys put a lot of love in your purchases. Please don't be away from the dogs too long. I know they are missing you.

In June 2017, my husband and I left Colorado for a 2 year stint in France. We rented out our house and put the things we wanted into the basement. In the spring of 2019, we decided to sell our house and put our things in storage, thinking we cou,d go back and get our things when we bought a house in France. We closed on our house in February 2020 and haven’t been able to get back to the storage unit!
Waits for Todd's Late Night Infomercial career to start...... I see a bright future there for him. Seriously though.... financial challenges come and go in life. As long as you are doing what you love, it seems a lot less like work and brings a lot more satisfaction. That always pays off in financial terms because you end up putting far more effort into it. Also, never be too afraid or proud to ask for help if/when you need it to help over short term struggles. You are both hard workers, but don't stress yourselves out trying to take on too much and end up getting stressed too far. Having someone manage the rental business seems like a great idea.
I mean if times get really tough we could always try and get him on QVC? 😅

Closing a chapter in anyone’s life is always hard,but you both are the one’s that can do it in ways of laughter. Never try to stress it only makes it harder. I really feel for you both. I downsized last year after 35 years and I can't tell you how many meltdowns I had - 3 dumpsters later and umpteen trips for donation and selling and it was finally done. Best thing I ever did but definitely the hardest. Thanks for taking us along. That house was gorgeous and you will allow someone else to enjoy it now too. Hugs from Toronto.

As someone who has moved quite a bit, I know the stress it puts on you and the amount of things you accumulate over time. Todd gets 5/5 stars for breaking out the "color coded" signs....haha. Tyler gets 5/5 stars for being a comedian. You two look so good and like you are meant to have a large space to live in, and I'm excited to see your dreams fulfilled once you can build your home on your land (plus more indoor space for the pups too). Moving can be emotional, but at least you're not doing it alone like I did. Never take each other for granted, and remember that these small steps are temporary in the grander scheme of things. Think of that place like the anchor of a boat...now that you're pulling the anchor up, you have the freedom ease of mind to move ahead in the direction you want without feeling tied down to that location. Make your new home exactly the way you want it, even it takes a little longer. Like that wall you wish you'd removed, hindsight is 20/20 (literally....2020 was last year, don't look back). Keep your heads up my friends, and when you feel stressed or tired, recharge your batteries (like the car).....just don't hook yourselves up to jumper cables, unless you're into that....hahaha. You can clean the glass door on the stove with isopropyl alcohol. It will dissolve the brown/black deposits.

Have you looked into a shipping container? You can buy one for a couple of thousand and pack it there - you might even be able to get the car in - have it shipped to your new property and use it as storage until you build your cabin, then you can convert it into guest accommodation. I have no idea if it's feasible with the distance you'd have to have it shipped but we did that when my Mum moved in with me, it's sitting in my yard right now and when she eventually builds her new house it will be converted.

Your home is beautiful , upstairs and downstairs. I also think you made the right decision to keep that wall in the kitchen, it has a much cozier feel with it there.
I believe that you can get Yurts as big as 30 feet diameter, if not 40. Nice thing about a Yurt is, when properly put up, is even Hurricane force Winds will not blow it down. Look at the way they are used in Siberia!

When I wanna get rid of a bulky item but it has a great memory attached to it I just take a picture of it and my plan is to make an art piece/ picture frame of some kind of those objects, takes less space and I actually get to see them instead of having it deep in a drawer 👌

Isn’t it amazing to go back to a place where you spent so much of your life, but left long ago. You immediately recognize the streets, buildings, shops, and everything that creates a sense of place. But there is also a surprising sense that it’s just as foreign as it is familiar. “I know this place, but I don’t belong here anymore.” It can be quite jarring and destabilizing. Don’t let it overwhelm you. You will be back on The Land where you now belong soon enough. Travel safely! Your Furry Children and other family are waiting to welcome you home. 💙
It was great to see your properties in Edmonton that we have heard so much over the year. You did a beautiful job of renovating them and anyone would be so lucky to stay or live in them. All you emotions came across in the vlog but together you can do it. I expect it will take longer than you think, but you well feel better and more settled when you get back to The Land and start you new endeavours and dreams in you new home.
