I knew most of these channels, but TalkingBass will always be my #1 recommendation when someone asks me which is the best channel for bass lessons on UA-cam. For real, the amount of stuff I learned (and still learning) is amazing!
I can tell you that Josh Fossgreen and Mark Smith were my first two online teachers. As a blind bass player, these guys would describe there fingerings and what they were doing to show how to do certain things on the bass. So that jumped started me for sure. I ended up buying seven of Mark's Courses. Beginner, Basic Fundamentals, Chord Tone Essentials, Scale Essentials, Simple Steps to Walking Bass, Both Volumes of Slap Bass, and Chords for Bass. Now the reading material does not always work with Screen Reading Software (Which is what I use to use my computer and what not.) And that's because sometimes little graphical symbols are hard for the Screen Reader to interpret. But that is an issue with the Screen Reader. Not with the lesson material. Nevertheless, these courses are still grate and I still have learned so much from them.
My toughts on my top 3: 3) Scott's bass lesson : very knowledgeable, but he tends to talk forever and bore me. 2) Talkingbass: Very easy to understand, and great aproach to beginners. This was the channel that taught me the basics. So easy to understand 1) Bassbuzz: very very fun, and the diagrams help out a lot. Helped me learn notes and scales
Yep, Scott tends to have a lot of 15 min videos with 10 mins of content. OR the classic "one of those days" where you have to skip 2-3 first minutes to get to the actual lesson. Still a good teacher and player tho and knows a ton, don't get me wrong, I think he just didn't UA-cam-ify his videos enough to be extremely concise and entirely lesson-focused. But I guess UA-cam is only a small part of the SBL Academy universe
You really are a fantastic teacher. If I want to learn something or need clarification I come here first. Thank you Luke from Become a Bass player is also great. And Rick Beato is Grandmaster. His white board lecture are legendary.
My favs: #1 TalkingBass, because EVERYTHING!!! You taught me to play, really, from ZERO. I am pretty competent with the instrument now, probably intermediate, and I picked up an instrument (bass being my first one ever) at 36. Also, you're the only person on YT who gives equal credit to pretty much all genres of music. A true pedagogue :) Finally, I understand your accent! You enunciate nicely, you are aware that the entire world is watching you, with arying levels of English knowledge. #2 Adam Neely, because EVERYTHING ELSE #3 Julia Hofner and Basslady, because I identify with them - girls and non-native English speakers, and because their focus is NOT on jazz and rock/prog/metal. Refreshing. #4 BassBuzz, because fun and practical #5 Become a Bassist because Luke is so nice, you just have to trust him. Also, a wonderful pedagogue, recognizes where you might get stuck and supports you through it. Every lesson of his really sticks. . . . #20 SBL, because he greets his audience with "dudes". Thank you Mark for not calling us dudes, and please tell your friend Scott to chill with that, many of his viewers will actually continue to the content if he just calls us anything else. Dudes and dudettes will do fine.
Scott Whitley and Guy Pratt are some notable omissions - Scott has been entertaining the troops during the lockdown with live-streamed gigs from his shed, and he has a great library of educational material online, as well as some interesting insights into the development of his signature short scale bass; Guy Pratt of course needs no introduction, and he’s been talking us through some of his most famous lines over the last few months on his UA-cam channel - he’s also a wonderful raconteur, so these vids are both educational and entertaining.

Talking Bass is THE channel for bass education. I have taken a few of Mark’s courses and learned more for those courses than I have in years. The material is straight forward, no ego and is explained in a way that you can’t help but learn. The lessons are a good price and are good value-you will have it for reference for a lifetime. Fantastic video, Mark! You found a way to mention some of my favorite online bass content, including your channel of course. I call Jim Stinnett, The Bob Ross Of Bass. Bob might have painted "Happy Trees", but Jim definitely plays happy basslines. Josh is a good teacher for beginners. Scott is interesting and informative. Davey 504 is amusing, but repetitive. Marlowe DK's old videos were great. I could listen to him play covers all day. I corresponded with him a few times. Super nice guy. Thanks for mentioning Marlowe.
Mark, Congrats! I checked most of the sites you mentioned., but you are the only one who goes from 0 to 10 in all of your courses. So you are NO:1 Definitely Scott is a not so distant second. Maybe it would be okay for total beginners, but I would argue that Mark's channel still would be far more superior for beginners who actually wanna learn how to play. Or maybe I just saw bad videos.

Thanks very much for this list! I've been learning the bass while in quarantine here in the U.S. I've been following a few of these channels but the ones I haven't been following look great. Have to say though, you're far and away the best teacher.
What a great video. I got a few new subs from it! What I particularly like is that even though you call it a top 20, you present it in a way which makes each one feel as important as the rest. Really humble and thoughtful.
Study Bass was a much more active UA-cam channel in the past. The guy's name escapes me now, but I found his content well presented and most effective with its variety of topics. Don't get much new stuff from him anymore. Hmmm, wonder if he'd sell me that Zon?🤔
Good video Mark and no doubt the best one is Talking Bass. The Bass Wizard, Marcello Feldman is another great YT channel. Also Marlowe DK although he hasn't had any new content for a few years.

Great list, a few new ones I haven't heard of before. I think its great to acknowledge there are many great resources out there and sticking to just one may limit you. Its also possible that each person's learning style doesn't always mesh with a certain teacher's teaching style, so its always good to get many perspectives because the light bulb may go on just because of how one person presents the same concept you didn't catch onto from someone else. My main three are SBL (Player's Path is awesome), TalkingBass and TrueFire, but I'm going to check out a few more from this list now, too. Always something to learn and work on.

I would recommend the channel Hondo Felder Music, he explains and shows a lot of the stuff of pedals. He does live streams and he is very kind. He does youtube videos and streams at Twitch. Also Janek is doing Twitch.
I visit and love a lot of these channels, but once I discovered TalkingBass, I had found “home bass” for online lessons and tips, And inspiration. I also tune in to as many Saturday live chats as I can! World class content here Mark.

This was great Mark. It really shows your character and that you just want your followers to become the best bassists they can be. I guess that is why I have been following you for the past year. Besides your site, the ones I visit regularly is Luke MacIntosh's Become A Bassist. I think he's great and I love the way he presents. And my third favorite is Josh from Bass Buzz. I love his presentation, its a lot of fun and informative. Another bassists I have started to follow is Ian Martin Allison. He has been doing lessons on SBL and he is positive and plays with such joy. I will check out the others. Though, been to SBL and just not for me. Stay Awesome Mark!

Hello? You forgot Patrick Hunter's Bass Channel. He does more Bass Gear reviews but he also does a song or two, and lessons. Also do not forget Stephen Cox from Atlanta's UA-cam Channel. He posts a video every Tuesday and since the mlockdowns started, a live stream which was every Saturday evening, now on Thursday evenings. Stephen does play other instruments every so often and on his older videos you will see him on the Electric Bass, but he mainly plays one of his Kala Ubass's or another brand of Ukulele Bass that he has and even once in a while breaks out his electric and even his upright Bass/ Totally teaches Music Theory and Bass Techniques and Bass lines for songs with tabs he made. Usually on one of his UBasses. Check these 2 people out. Especilaly Stephen Cox
can't argue that some of the others may be more entertaining.but for pedantic instructional ,inspiring videos you rock Mark.not pissing in your pocket just wish to express my Appreciation
So many great players and helpful teachers out there, it would be impossibile to include them all but some additional channels derving attention are Wobass, Cambrige Bass Lessons, Greg Fairweather, and Ryan Madora
I would add Nathan Navarro. He is a great bass player and started to post more frequently lately. I would put him in the inspirations section as he does covers arrangements and gear reviews on youtube.
Great Resource for bassists looking for other channels to help with their playing! Us musicians have to help each other out, and you do a fantastic job of it :)

Great list Mark. I am a huge fan of Bass Buzz, have done private lessons with Josh, he is great. I do a lot of your courses too. I want to shout out to Damien Erskine, and his newer channel BassEducation.com. He is another great player / teacher who I learn tons from. I gravitate primarily between these 3 channels daily. I use many of the others you mentioned, and you have introduced me to some new ones here, so thanks for that.
Nathan Navarro should be also mentioned here, great channel and a super awesome bass player. And I would add Rick Beato as an endless source of inspiration, always fun to watch. His "What makes this song great" song dissections are really motivating and interesting.
What a great video Mark... Quite honestly if I want something explained clearly and want to see how to do it, TalkingBass is where I'm going. If I want inspiration, yes it's a visit to CoverSolutions... or to Julia's channel. Scott has some great content, but sometimes his videos are a little long. Yep, Josh is entertaining and has some great content. So glad you included Travis...what an underrated channel (and who doesn't love his cover of Love Theory).

Bob might have painted "Happy Trees", but Jim definitely plays happy basslines. Josh is a good teacher for beginners. Scott is interesting and informative. Davey 504 is amusing, but repetitive.
Marlowe DK's old videos were great. I could listen to him play covers all day. I corresponded with him a few times. Super nice guy. Thanks for mentioning Marlowe.

Mark, Congrats! I checked most of the sites you mentioned., but you are the only one who goes from 0 to 10 in all of your courses. So you are NO:1 Definitely Scott is a not so distant second. I am not talking about U-tube. I am talking about the actual websites of those guys. Keep up the good work! I am one of your students and have bought 7 courses from your program. Good luck!

@@mfC0RD Well, hate is too strong of a word, but.... It's clickbaity, humor is subpar, but most importantly it's really superficial in terms of informativity. Maybe it would be okay for total beginners, but I would argue that Mark's channel still would be far more superior for beginners who actually wanna learn how to play. Or maybe I just saw bad videos.
@@BroockPhilipp It's not really clickbaity tbh, just has "UA-cam Thumbnails". Clickbait would mean it would show smth e.g "LEARN THIS" and you click but it doesn't even talk about it. But yeah, it all depends on the level and learning style of the individual, and dadjoke humor levels :P
Thanks very much for this list! I've been learning the bass while in quarantine here in the U.S. I've been following a few of these channels but the ones I haven't been following look great. Have to say though, you're far and away the best teacher.
What a great video. I got a few new subs from it!
What I particularly like is that even though you call it a top 20, you present it in a way which makes each one feel as important as the rest. Really humble and thoughtful.
Study Bass was a much more active UA-cam channel in the past. The guy's name escapes me now, but I found his content well presented and most effective with its variety of topics. Don't get much new stuff from him anymore. Hmmm, wonder if he'd sell me that Zon?🤔
Good video Mark and no doubt the best one is Talking Bass.
The Bass Wizard, Marcello Feldman is another great YT channel.
Also Marlowe DK although he hasn't had any new content for a few years.

Great list, a few new ones I haven't heard of before. I think its great to acknowledge there are many great resources out there and sticking to just one may limit you. Its also possible that each person's learning style doesn't always mesh with a certain teacher's teaching style, so its always good to get many perspectives because the light bulb may go on just because of how one person presents the same concept you didn't catch onto from someone else. My main three are SBL (Player's Path is awesome), TalkingBass and TrueFire, but I'm going to check out a few more from this list now, too. Always something to learn and work on.

This is a fantastic list. I haven't heard of half of these channels.
I would recommend the channel Hondo Felder Music, he explains and shows a lot of the stuff of pedals. He does live streams and he is very kind. He does youtube videos and streams at Twitch. Also Janek is doing Twitch.

I visit and love a lot of these channels, but once I discovered TalkingBass, I had found “home bass” for online lessons and tips, And inspiration. I also tune in to as many Saturday live chats as I can! World class content here Mark.

She’s in the Truefire section. Most of her online output is there and she does a lot at SBL
This was great Mark. It really shows your character and that you just want your followers to become the best bassists they can be. I guess that is why I have been following you for the past year. Besides your site, the ones I visit regularly is Luke MacIntosh's Become A Bassist. I think he's great and I love the way he presents. And my third favorite is Josh from Bass Buzz. I love his presentation, its a lot of fun and informative. Another bassists I have started to follow is Ian Martin Allison. He has been doing lessons on SBL and he is positive and plays with such joy. I will check out the others. Though, been to SBL and just not for me. Stay Awesome Mark!
For the honorable mentions you should have included Leland Sklar. He posts daily, usually playing along to the track. He also shares great stories about being a session musician, as well as stories from the road

Hello? You forgot Patrick Hunter's Bass Channel. He does more Bass Gear reviews but he also does a song or two, and lessons. Also do not forget Stephen Cox from Atlanta's UA-cam Channel. He posts a video every Tuesday and since the mlockdowns started, a live stream which was every Saturday evening, now on Thursday evenings. Stephen does play other instruments every so often and on his older videos you will see him on the Electric Bass, but he mainly plays one of his Kala Ubass's or another brand of Ukulele Bass that he has and even once in a while breaks out his electric and even his upright Bass/ Totally teaches Music Theory and Bass Techniques and Bass lines for songs with tabs he made. Usually on one of his UBasses. Check these 2 people out. Especilaly Stephen Cox

So many great players and helpful teachers out there, it would be impossibile to include them all but some additional channels derving attention are Wobass, Cambrige Bass Lessons, Greg Fairweather, and Ryan Madora
I would add Nathan Navarro. He is a great bass player and started to post more frequently lately. I would put him in the inspirations section as he does covers arrangements and gear reviews on youtube.

Great list Mark. I am a huge fan of Bass Buzz, have done private lessons with Josh, he is great. I do a lot of your courses too. I want to shout out to Damien Erskine, and his newer channel BassEducation.com. He is another great player / teacher who I learn tons from. I gravitate primarily between these 3 channels daily. I use many of the others you mentioned, and you have introduced me to some new ones here, so thanks for that.

What a great video Mark... Quite honestly if I want something explained clearly and want to see how to do it, TalkingBass is where I'm going. If I want inspiration, yes it's a visit to CoverSolutions... or to Julia's channel. Scott has some great content, but sometimes his videos are a little long. Yep, Josh is entertaining and has some great content. So glad you included Travis...what an underrated channel (and who doesn't love his cover of Love Theory).
