  • In June and July, the chances of catching a 6 meter sporadic E opening greatly improve. There is even a good possibility in late May and early August. I have made a few 6 meter DX contacts from the top of mountains, but success is very unpredictable. I take 6 meter capabilities with me on my SOTA activations from sometime in May through August. I have experimented with a few 6 meter antennas for portable operations and this is what I have found works best for me.

    Hi Charlie,
    Enjoyed the video. I liked the "need three hands, but only have two". 🙂 I have a 2m whip similar to those 6m whips. I bought it many years ago for my ancient IC-2AT handheld. Hi to Sandy and you both stay safe. 73 WJ3U

      Very cool Don - I would like to have a couple 2m telescoping whips myself. I could think of a few fun things to try. Thanks!

    4:22 "I only have two hands but I need 3, hold on". I was deeply disappointed when I saw you didn't attach another hand.

      LOL - Kyle, your expectations of me are a little out of "reach"! Funny

    I have had great fun on 6m with a homebrew delta loop, 9ft agl, with one contact over 2,000mile.

      Wow! That's awesome. I have an unopened delta loop. I should break it out and try it on 6 meters. Super cool that you got that DX. Thanks, Gary!

    I need to do some more 6m with POTA. F8 is no problem when the land is open, but my Shark Antenna 6m ham stick hasn’t gotten any SSB contact yet. Need to try another antenna or adjust my setup for 6m… 73

      Hi Jeff - yeah, 6 meters is tough, especial DX. Sporadic E is hard to catch in the field. This is the beauty of it, as you demonstrate in your own videos - trail and error and have fun! I appreciate you stopping by the channel. Keep putting out great videos.

    What feedline is that? Thanks for sharing

      Hi - it's just a 20' run of RG-316 coax with BNC connectors on each end. I think I purchased it from PackTenna, but you can find them multiple places online. Thanks

    Which 2M handheld has SSB?

    • @RedSummitRF
      @RedSummitRF  11 місяців тому +1

      Well, I don't have an HT with SSB capabilities. I use an Yaesu FT-817. I did a quick internet search and I couldn't find any in production.

      Hi Emir - your guess is close. It's a Yaesu FT-60R.

    Question:
    If I get the 2 meter antenna mount and all I gotta do is get the whips to make it for 6 meters? One mount for 2 different antennas?

    • @RedSummitRF
      @RedSummitRF  Рік тому

      That is correct. I have an earlier video where I added 2 meter whips to the same mount. It's designed for 2 meters but you can use it on other bands. Just make sure you check the SWR because you never know about antenna designs. But yes, one mount on 2 (or more ) different antennas.

    great activation and demo of antenna Charlie, I have been on 6m since 1972, love the band. but notice way too many left it for FT8. Great if you are collecting for awards etc. but lots of us old timers have been there done that. and like to work ssb and cw. just for fun and the openings etc. so more of the FT8 guys need to keep an ear out for the SSb'rs and Cw ops we're still there! especially during contests! The beauty of it is you can Ragchew! either mode but not on FT8. think about it. thanks again Charlie still waiting to work you on cw anywhere. will keep trying. 73. de Ellis WA1RKS

      Thanks Ellis - good thoughts. I have several 6 meter old timers that I'm friends with. Pete WA7JTM for example. They've been super helpful. FT8 is in my future. I like all modes.

      Truth - it's all fun. FT8 included (even though I've yet to use that mode). Thanks for your comment.
