for now i’m going to say thank you all, i’ll add more in terms of the journey to this point when i wake up tomorrow As far as the journey goes, it started around April 11, when Arvo uploaded his new pb on this track. The video captured my interest in an odd way, and combined with me realizing I had fallen to 9th on this track, I seriously considered playing this category again. On April 13 after I set my rWS time, I switched to this track and never looked back. My original intention was certainly not to get the world record, but just to climb up the ranks again to get a time that would be more comfortably in the top 10, as I had done for other tracks like MC and RR. After starting to play this track again for the first time in nearly 2 years, I decided to learn the 2 mini turbo (mt) strat at the ends of laps 1 and 2, as I figured it saved time and I noticed that was what the people who passed me were doing. I was able to do it effectively soon after, and my former pb appeared very beatable. I ended up beating it with a 1:15.521 on April 20, but the ending was very sloppy and I knew I didn’t want to leave that there (despite the run itself being 6th at the time). I got another pb, 1:15.395, a few days later on April 23, but I knew I could go further than that as well. I would say things really started to become serious after that point, as my next pb ended up being a 1:15.002 on May 2, and I figured why not go for 1:14 and at least 2nd at that point, as I was less than .1 away from both. I got the 1:14 a few days later (1:14.939 on May 4), but it only brought me to 3rd, so I kept going. I still did not have clear intentions of going for the record until the night of May 5th, where I truly took a look at Vincent’s (now former) world record and thought “This is actually beatable. I believe that I can beat this.” I went to sleep shortly after as it was very late and I had school the next morning. I had no idea what was in store for me the next day. Before I mention what happened, I would like to briefly mention that a lot of this grind took place during the tail end of my school year. This meant that along with grinding this track, I had to finish some final projects and make sure things were in order for the final exams I had to take (this was also a very very odd time of my school life as well). However, a lot of this work would be done during school, and during a couple free periods I would watch the times on this track set by Eli, Jayu, Core, and Vincent on my school laptop if I didn’t want to do other work. I would like to thank them for setting those runs and indirectly providing me with something that was somewhat enjoyable to do during an otherwise boring time of the day. Anyways, back to what ended up happening on May 6th. That night, I was playing this track, and I had a really good pace going into lap 3 (.535 or so ahead of my 1:15.837). I got a high clip and immediately said “no way” as I landed in the water, knowing the clip might work, and it did. I finished the run, and it was a 1:14.621, over .3 ahead of Eli’s time. I almost couldn’t believe it, as not long before that I thought that a 1:14.7/1:14.8 would be the best case scenario. This ultimately reinforced my thought the night before that I could be the one to finally dethrone Vincent here. After that, not much happened for a little while, as replicating the fast alignment of my 1:14.621 on equally as good of a pace was very challenging. Again, I was also getting through finals week, so a good bit of my focus had to go towards that as well. During this time, I did set a couple new bkses for lap 3, finally beating Vincent’s lap 3 in his run from 2 years prior, but not much else happened. On the night of May 16 (technically May 17 at that point since it was past midnight), the day after I had to take my last final exam, I set my first 1:14.5, with a 1:14.578. It was really getting close now, all I needed was a pace that wasn’t too far behind Vincent, and a very fast glitch. That ended up being rather difficult to accomplish. I had many glitches on dead runs before setting the time shown here, resulting in my 1:14 count slowly rising. However, I had discovered something very important over that week purely by accident. On a dead run, I failed the double mt strat and ended up in the water a lot at the end of lap 2. I released my mt earlier and drifted earlier than normal, as I figured it wouldn’t really matter. Well, I got a high clip that counted. I checked the lap time to see a 17.388, crushing the next best lap 3 I had (17.443 if I recall right) and beating Vincent’s lap by nearly .1, even with the 17.388 having a few very noticeable mistakes. This really opened things up for me, as I now had a lot more room to work with regarding how far behind Vincent I was when entering lap 3. On May 21 (Tuesday) I set my 1:14.555 on a much worse pace entering lap 3 than my former pb, but my new faster glitch alignment on lap 3 made that irrelevant (lap was 17.375, also a bks). I knew then that it was only a matter of time before I got a pace and glitch lap that would be good enough to beat Vincent. I poured in attempts for the next few days, as school (at least for me) was done and I didn’t really have much else planned. I had some clips and good paces, but I didn’t have both in one run just yet. That was until this run. I was pouring in more attempts, when I had this pace that was .512 or so ahead of my 1:15.837. I got a clip, and immediately started focusing when I saw that it would count. My mom was walking by, but that didn’t distract me, as I was able to back up and finish out the run. I started jumping around immediately and shouting when I saw the time. Before April if anyone had told me I would get a Banana Cup glitch world record this year, I would have thought of 2/3 on rWS, but here we are. This record could be improved with better driving and a better lap 3, as I played the checkpoint very safe in this run. I’m going to try to improve this somewhat before moving on to something else, but I’m not going to play this as much as I did before. Good luck to anyone else who wants to try to contend this record in the future.
It's funny to me how Ray seems to struggle getting the neutral hop at the low jump since neutral hopping on the wheel is so much harder than any other controller
Awesome run, I’m so glad you persevered after being so close to WR several times
