    New players, please do remember that when watching a Scott Manley video, you are not watching a tutorial, but an entire semester on astrophysics.

      Naw, the stuff he explains is just a tiny fraction of all there is to understand on the subject.

    I've been playing KSP for awhile (100+ hours logged on Steam) and I understand most of how it works, but I find watching these tutorials helps me confirm my knowledge and perhaps learn a couple more tricks to building, launching and flying rockets.
    Thanks so much for the time you put into all your videos Scott. I look forward to future episodes!
    As you say "Fly Safe!"

    I'm impatiently waiting on episodes about efficiency and stuff. While i was able to deliver smaller crafts to orbits of Mun and Minmus and return, i can't seem to be able to operate large stuff. It took me five attempts to take a mobile processing lab to Kerbin's orbit at 270 km alt, and even then i've used 4 mainsail engines and 6 x200-64 fuel tanks. While i ended up having extra 600 units of fuel, which was probably enough to get this lab to the Mun, i'm definitely not satisfied with the result.
    P.S. I'm really new to this game, as you peeps can probably tell, so please, don't call me an idiot for not knowing something that is trivial for you. Better call me a noob - that's legit :)

      >deliver smaller crafts to orbits of Mun and Minmus and return
      I wish I could return. Jeb is a permanent colonist of Mun.

      I didn't land. I just did a low orbit flybys and went home. I have yet to try landing and returning. I might fail miserably aswell.

    • @Slithy
      @Slithy 10 років тому

      Kevin J. Dildonik
      Yeah, i've been trying that in sandbox mode. I didn't try to get the lab to the Mun, i've barely managed to get it to low orbit around Kerbin. I'm almost 100% sure that it's because my rocket is too bulky, that's why i mentioned efficiency. Bulky rockets of small diameter still fly fine, but larger ones are worse.

    Thanks for the great tutorials, enjoying them greatly. For new players who started career mode, it's goot to know that some options are not available until upgrading some buildings, which can take a lot of time. Like surface sample collecting shown in this video, or EVA in space.

    Let me first thank you for the great videos you provide. I've been playing KSP for a little while now and have learned a lot about the game from you. One item I did figure out is you can roll the capsule off the pad to the grass and get science from the space center biome. I'm can only assume that you already know this but thought I would comment about it anyway. Thanks again for the great videos.

    If you followed it up to this point i found a way around the currency
    Make sure in the second stage have R-10 Rocket. It will work just fine (yes the first engine you use at the part 1)

  • @Liowen
    @Liowen 10 років тому +10

    One way around having to worry if the experiments will be destroyed when landing is to do an EVA, provided you went into space of course, and take the data from the experiments and store them in the capsule. Handy for those times when you are not sure if the landing will be good or not.

    • @sednabold859
      @sednabold859 10 років тому

      Do you lose data or is it a benefit of bringing crew?

    • @Liowen
      @Liowen 10 років тому

      No data loss unless you are transmitting, this is more of an insurance type system. Also with the science lab you have to remove the data in order to clean out the experiments. So it is a benefit of having a crew, plus say a mission goes bad but the capsule and crew survive you can transfer those collected data items and move them to the rescue ship.

    • @sednabold859
      @sednabold859 10 років тому

      ***** Ahhh thanks i didn't know that why would you ever not store experiments in the capsule if you had crew?

    • @Liowen
      @Liowen 10 років тому

      I honestly just started my career mode and didn't know that to be the case, and I also was not very good with the EVA controls. I am getting better though...although video evidence might not show it lol.

    • @ArmChairPlum

      I'd think it's because of his accent and normal voice. Not that he is a father!

    • @ArmChairPlum
      @ArmChairPlum 10 років тому

      I didn't mean that he isn't a father, rather you mention that his "teaching words is so sweet. I think it's cos he's a father"
      This was what I meant. That his accent and normal voice is what makes him easy to listen to...

    • @Dohyden2
      @Dohyden2 10 років тому

      Dion McGovern-Allen
      His accent makes him awesome, but having kids and playing ksp with them means he can phrase his words in a way that is easy to understand and learn from.

    Just two things to add here ( not to Scott, but to the intended viewers of the video):
    1) A minor note on the time acceleration: you must be wary of the higher speeds when going in a orbit that crosses the atmosphere. It is not uncommon that the game forgets to decelerate when entering the atmosphere ... not good if you are returning from somewhere and need the atmosphere to slow you down :(
    2) You can also get science from being in the KSC ( Kerbal Space center ) outside of the runway and of the launch pad ... it is not much , but you can probably get some pocket change there;without much of a hassle....

    A slightly more advanced engineering tactic to avoid excessive delays in engine staging is to pair the next stage's engine(s) with the decoupler that's below it. So it's only a single button press to get the next stage going.

    I'm sure you know this by now, but the torque thing in the command pod is (not magic) flywheels that speed up and slow down, which can control the attitude (I used a big fancy space word) like a remote controlled gyroscope.

    The best "opening move" I've come up with so far is building a rocket to get into a polar orbit around Kerbin and getting EVA reports from above each biome, plus crew reports from the pad, crew report from the lower atmosphere (on the way up), near space, upper atmosphere (on the way down), plus crew report, EVA report(s) and surface sample from wherever I land.

    • @Smidge204
      @Smidge204 10 років тому

      MultiGoban
      I'd like to see that, especially given 0.23's revised mechanics (no more transmit spamming). I can believe interplanetary as it's not *that* hard, but I can't really see landing too many places to get surface samples etc.

    • @Archgeek0
      @Archgeek0 10 років тому

      MultiGoban No, you can. You start with the basic antenna, there's enough juice in the command pod for 1 transmit, and you can recharge with your rocket's alternator if you're not using a 909 engine.

    Scott, I cannot complete this tutorial because my rocket experience wind( I guess?) at height of about 3000m and it just started to rotate. Everything else is the same. I don't why and i have the .9 version

    when i built my 2 part rocket, in the first stage about 8000m up, it started to spin wildly out of control. do you know why?

    Guys I need some urgent help:
    My version is 0.90, I cannot earn science unless I transmit it.
    I follow this tutorial and once I recover the vessel I earn nothing
    When I transmit the data I get a very tiny amount of science
    Pleeese help, I started to play 2 days ago, I already know how to control the rockets and all the basic but this "glitch" is preventing me from getting science and progressing on the tree.
    Thanks!
    ps: I never get science for recovering the vessel, I already collected samples and reports that should give more than 30 science but I got nothing!!!

      Try reinstalling. Otherwise, it just went into beta. Report it to squad, and hopefully they can help you.

      I also just started, career mode quests do not complete even if all green checkmarks. Try Science mode, and I cannot get more than 44.5 science, so I cannot unlock more science I need 45. Also I cannot orbit for some reason. The orbit dialogue never opens, and I run out of fuel.

    How did you rotate with no flaps or wings, also what is the different between flaps and wings?

    So is the reaction wheel in the capsule just unrealistic because it's ridiculoulsy strong compared to real reaction wheels or is there a more profound reason?

    • @octagonPerfectionist
      @octagonPerfectionist 10 років тому +3

      it's significantly stronger than it should be, and it breaks the law of conservation of energy. in a real reaction wheel you need an RCS system so you can spin the wheels up once their energy is depleted. otherwise the craft will spin around the wheels.

      I'm really glad it's not realistic or KSP would be ten times harder, and I personally feel it is just challenging enough at this point.

      OriginalTharios Not pointless, but yeah, pointless in atmosphere, and on big spacecrafts

      Totally agree. It's already easy to crash, explode, get stranded in space and whatnot. I'm sure there's a mod somewhere that makes the reaction wheels act in a realistic fashion, but that's not for me yet. It would be cool though if the full version some months from now included an option to toggle Realistic Mode when you started a new game and that option could add re-entry heat, life support, weaker reaction wheels, internal heat build-up etc.

      Pile of carbon Yeah there are mods for all of these(except the last one I think), but I've heard somewhere that some of those features will indeed be on the final version.
