    Pianist, composer, author, and terrible singer Jeremy Siskind introduces five exercises to help what you hear inside your head connect to what you're playing on the outside. "Honeysuckle Rose" by Fats Waller and "Potato Head Blues" by Louis Armstrong are used as examples.

    So glad that you "Sing a Solo" for us at 18:47. It's so dynamic and bursting with musicality. Love the rhythm, shape, syllables, articulation, hand gestures and the comping. You have encouraged me to sing!!!!

    I wonder how I (beginner) should approach identifying longer phrases (like in your last exercises where you sing something and then play it). Identify each tone by relating it to the root? Identify the first tone in relation to the root and then the following tones by relating them to previous one? Identifying the first tone and then resolving it to the root by going up/down some scale until you come across the next searched tone?
    I started ear training with some app this weekend, and was pretty surprised of my progress in interval identification so far, but sitting at the piano, identifying melodies while some base chord is humming... is like another league so far.
    By the way your vids are just wonderful. somehow even the 100th promotion block made me smile like the 99 before ;) Thx for all the help, the world would be a worse place without you! :)

      Hi there! Thanks for your nice words! I think all of your ideas are good. I'm not sure there's a "best' or "only" way. But for beginners, I'd start with shorter phrases and work up to longer phrases. Don't try to do much too soon. Work on 2-note intervals until you don't even have to think. Then, work on 3-note melodies, etc. By the time you get to longer phrases, you shouldn't be thinking too hard about it.

    To play by ear the fundamental scale to use is major scale . Wow its amazing sir. Sing and apply to your fingers this is nice approach to improvise compose on the spot.

    Jeremy could you help with figuring out the changes fully by ear to any song ?

    • @JeremySiskind
      @JeremySiskind  2 роки тому +2

      Good question! To me, the key is that chords have two parts - a root and a sonority. You have to be REALLY REALLY good at recognizing sonorities, so practice hearing the difference between minor, major, dominant, half-diminished, diminished, augmented, etc, etc, etc, chords. Then, practice hearing the bass notes to a piece and determining what the roots of chords are. It will help to be really common with the sounds of common chord progressions so you can recognize them instantly.

    If you’re shy about singing or worried other people will hear you, just sing louder :) any additional courses from you coming to Tonebase? Loved the course in there from you and have both of your books now.

      Nothing upcoming from me for Tonebase. But bug them and let them know you want more of me. 😉 I'll work with them any time.
