Chipping bamboo at Bamboo Land, Australia

  • Chipping bamboo using a Bandit 250XP 12 inch disc chipper. This species is Bambusa oldhamii which is not a very good timber species - quite soft and starchy, so it has no real commercial value as timber poles in Australia. This row of bamboo was removed to expand our bamboo gardens with other better species of timber bamboo. After chipping the timber and foliage, all the root balls where transplanted to a new location. The chip (mulch) was then used to mulch the new plantings. Absolutely nothing gets wasted at Bamboo Land.

I'm from Malaysia and we used bamboo for the flooring of our chicken coop. The constant feet traffic polished it so well and it's already been 5 years with barely a replacement. Bamboo will last as long as any timber if exposure to moisture is kept to a minimum.

Bamboo is a perennial grass. This was the easiest removal effort I've ever seen. Without proper tools containing it can be a drudge. Supply and demand. Bamboo is the future to end clear cutting and deforestation.

    Well
While you aussies turn somebodies else bamboos into chips, we in Brazil grow your eucalyptus mainly for industrial firewood.
Our territory lacks coal deposits, but you eucalyptus felt so welcome overhere it may produce 360 tons per hectare of dry firewood when harvested within six years.
But bamboo could be a choice for fuel production as well.

I have a patch of bamboo in the backyard of a house I just bought. Was my understanding you couldn't chip the stuff.. Looks to me you can if you have a large industrial chipper and the bamboo is still green and retaining moisture.

It's a wicked mulch for gardens n fruit trees.
Though I believe selling the stalks would be cheaper and easier (space permitted), mulch what you don't sell then sell or use that.

Thanks for the video. I grow bamboo in Panama and was thinking of investing in a small chipper to turn my tailings into mulch for paths and also the bamboo clumps themselves. I does put a lump in my throat when I see so many full size culms being shredded but I think you have a bigger picture in mind....good luck and thanks again.

@@richnow1686 Clearly they know how to extract value from this weed variety.
Bamboo land also operate a nursery which supplies high quality disease free plants such as gingers and many other permaculture varieties to customers all around the country.
Turning an imported potential pest species into safe mulch and potting medium is value adding to a weed.
Pulling the clump splitting and replanting has plenty benefits to anyone who actually grows things, including propagation for sale.
If you have ever had to get rid of a clump of bamboo you would appreciate the efficiency of the method.
Even better quality bamboo is of little value without a pool of cheap exploited labour. This is why China controls the market for bamboo ply products.

Manufactured Bamboo products have a high labour content and are dominated by China.
      Australia doesn't use slave labour.
Once some Aussie inventor comes up with a mechanised labour saving processing method, then bamboo ply could be produced for instance (not from that variety). That is until the intellectual property goes overseas like the combine harvester , cane harvester etc.

I would then use the fork lift to pick up each bundle with a sling with choker hitch and place the bundle into the chipper hopper then remove the load binder.

They clearly stated that specie of bamboo has no value.🙄 They did a good job turning them into a mulch instead of exerting effort turning it to a furniture, etc.

It appears that this outfit grows bamboo as construction material. Be that as it may, this species of bamboo is still very well suited for other uses, like furniture and other consumer products. You wouldn't be the only one who thinks this is a waste of perfectly good material.

    • @cycleplumber
      @cycleplumber 4 роки тому

@@annacompan7219 a substantial waste of material that has much better value. mulch can be made from lower quality waste or byproduct of other wood/lumber processes. But these bamboo could easily have been turned into more valuable consumer products. I suspect its chalked up to an inadaquate supply/demand chain or undeveloped commercial ecosystem thats unable to make use of this otherwise perfectly good wood. A real shame.

It seems to me these people have considerable bambú and they are using these plants to make mulch for other established plants or new ones to be made from the separated bases of these plants! ..making mulch from bambú stock (especially from an apparent abundant source) Is as valid as making the zillions of other things that can be made; furniture, fencing, architecture whatever.. perhaps they had gotten an order of 100's of plants from a client ..

those clumps are full of the tuber roots and they look deep enough to supply what is needed for new shoots to come up. a new plant grows a narrow plant and a mature root system grows thicker stalks due to the age and maturity of the tuber roots.
