Bamboo fabric impregnated with water activated ceramic cut into strips and woven together to form panels that can be attached to a aluminium frame then soaked with water and then cures rock solid has the ceramic fabric dries? What do you think about this idea?
Thanks for the video. I thought that Borax treatment was not good for outdoor use (per one of your blog posts), yet in the video you mention these are construction grade. Can you explain?
Thanks for the amazing video. While bleaching/drying the bamboo under sun for 1-2 weeks as mentioned in the video, are they transferred inside for night so they don't acquire moisture at night? Also, if it rains are the bamboo provided with shade to protect it from getting wet or are they just left out as they are?
How do you prevent the bamboo from cracking. I have seen many that break open sometime with a loud noise. Apparently thats where bamboo is called bamboo.
You can pump treatment into the poles with about 20 psi in less than an hour. I've been cutting and treating my own for a couple months, However I just found after treating and drying for a month, a few days after the first rain I'm seeing mold. That tells me the treatment is not working. I figured this would have a 5 year life outside if above ground level. It looks now like it still wont last a year.
Trandq2001.....Maybe not a chainsaw, but at least a saw of some kind which can also be sharpened like the machetes! Your workers could cut twice as fast with a saw! God Bless!
I love bamboo. There are better ways of cutting bamboo than with a machete which is very labor-intensive compared to chainsaws and other types of hand saws which would give you a cleaner cut.
You are correct, but the cost of a chainsaw compared to a man with a machete is not worth the investment. Hand saws are useful when the poles are closer together and access to swing a machete is tight but the plantation these guys have is pretty mature and the culms are a comfortable distance apart.
Thank You for posting ----- How many times (duration) can the "Borax" treatment be recycled for the next batch ? -- does the strength of the Borax solution weaken after multiple re-use / recycle ?
why are you not boiling the bamboo? it removies nature oils that effect the surface and lifespan.. also for cleanibg there is a device you can purchase that you push the banboom through a ring or steel and plastic brushes that removes the outer fuzzy surface
Because of course you know better than the pros themselves! Right? Allow me to educate you: a chainsaw isn't the right tool to fell bamboo because the chain will get pinched...plus you can't control the fall of a bamboo like you can when felling a tree...generally speaking a chainsaw isn't super practical when dealing with bamboos and can be very dangerous.
@Jeanette Requintin Indonesians, Vietnamese...can afford a chainsaw (there are truck load of vids on youtube of forest workers, peasants...from there using chainsaws...) so I guess most south american workers also can, or at the very least their boss can lend them chainsaws...anyway that's not the point, the issue is that a chainsaw isn't the right tool to fell bamboo because the chain will get pinched...also you can't control the fall of the bamboo...generally speaking a chainsaw isn't super practical when dealing with bamboos, and it can be very dangerous. Bamboos in the Philippines are tougher to harvest, a bush of bamboo can have up to 100 bamboos in it, twigs have thorns and build up at the trunk of the bamboos 7 feet high. Only the skilled bamboo cutter can harvest them only with a machete. Prepare to have a lot of scars if you do it on your own.
@matias: you are right because the bamboos you have experience with are clumpers with those thorns. the bamboos in the videos are runner type of a different specie easier to approach and cut down. one ting the video failed to mention is the durability and longevity of the processed bamboos in tropical areas with the unavoidable termites.

That's the mindset there, although the productivity depends more on the sells and the natural availability, so it's not so simple and industrialised, that's the down fall of the sustainable production of wood (in short, if the boss doesn't see the immediate gains it wouldn't invest in anything)-although remember that this implies that you have to train people and add care protocols for the machines, something hard to implement in South America without the proper knowledge.
