For those asking what kind of plant it is, the title of the video contains ...growing water convolvulus, so that is what the plant is. Here is what google says about it - Ipomoea aquatica (water convolvulus), called water spinach, or swamp spinach, grows abundantly in tropical regions in Southeast Asia and is used extensively in cuisine in places such as Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. This ingredient works great in stir-fries, soups, and other dishes where a mild, green flavor would benefit a recipe. Despite its name, water spinach is not really spinach, nor is it related to spinach. It's also not part of the brassica family, so it's also unrelated to kale and its bitter leafy green ilk. Instead, water spinach is part of the morning glory family and has long vine-like stems and bell-shaped morning glory-like flowers. Ipomoea aquatica is known as kangkong in the Philippines, kangkung in Indonesia and Malaysia, rau muong in Vietnam, pak bong in Laos, and trakuon in Cambodia. Its English names include water or swamp spinach; sometimes it's referred to as Chinese water spinach, or ong choy in Cantonese. Water spinach is a semi-aquatic plant that thrives with little or no supervision. In fact, it grows so quickly that it is considered invasive in some regions in the U.S. where it has been introduced, but in Southeast Asia where it is used to cook myriad dishes, water spinach is never invasive. On the contrary, it is perceived as a culinary blessing because it grows so easily and is therefore sold very cheaply. There are many varieties of water spinach; some are shorter than others and the leaves are of different lengths and shapes. All, however, have hollow stalks from which the leaves grow. Both stalks and leaves are eaten. Water spinach is used in stir-fried dishes or added to soups.

Fascinating! I was about to ask if it could grow in Florida, but how invasive is it? Would it not be a good idea to grow that in the Americas? 🤔

If you add an air stone you would be accomplishing four things…. one you would help to make the water a little bit clearer because you would be helping the bacteria to do its job and to grab give you a better crop and you would have healthier fish because they would be able to process oxygen at a higher rate along with your plants benefiting!!! 👩‍🌾

Not every plant can be constantly in water, at least not most of those that you'd probably grow in an aquaponic system. Also you might want to check how aquaponics work and where the plants get their nutritions and why they get so big.
The really short version is fish poop>into the flower bed filled with gravel etc... Bacteria gets to work, creates "food" for the plants and clears the water for the fish>clean water back to the fish>fish poop back into the flower bed and everything repeats. Without the bacteria you get from the gravel in the flower bed and without the plants cleaning the water and sending it back clean to the fish, it's not really an aquaponic system. Also if there are dry periods air pump will be deliver oxygen to both the fish and plants.
This feels more of a hydroponic system with fish in it. The plants won't grow as fast, nor will they be as big as in aquaponics. Also plastic isn't a good choice since it will eventually start releasing microplastic in the soil/water. If I have to guess these plants would've grown without the fish.

Don't let the trolls bother you, about microplastics. Plastic takes a long time to break down, some newer plant bottles might breakdown much faster, than the typical pet bottle that can store acidic beverages for years. I'd be more concerned with PVC glue, being used on pipes for drinking water in most countries than microplastic getting through the roots and into the plant. I congratulate you on doing this with out using pumps. Any tips on how you keep the fish breathing. How are you keeping a ideal oxygen levels. I'm looking to do a aquaponics system off solar and finding reliable dc air pumps is a huge challenge, and a inverter in a greenhouse with high humidity seems like a recipe for failure

Great video. Will try a smaller version myself. Pomoea aquatica is a semi-aquatic, tropical plant grown as a vegetable for its tender shoots. This plant is known in English as water spinach, river spinach, water morning glory, water convolvulus, or by the more ambiguous names Chinese spinach, Chinese watercress, Chinese convolvulus or swamp cabbage, or kangkong/kangkung in Southeast Asia, ong choy (蕹菜) in Cantonese, and kōngxīncài (空心菜) in Mandarin or tung choi (通菜) sometimes in modern Cantonese.[2][3] Its place of origin is not known. Tung Choi Street in Hong Kong is named after this vegetable.

A plastic bottle filled with water will never reach a temperature higher than the water itself. PET plastic takes a very long time to discolor or become brittle when exposed to UV, and even then it doesn't release chemicals or decompose. After many years, to decades, it will break apart and become microplastics, but this isn't going to happen in the time frame of it being used in your garden. The danger of PET is all the waste bottles being thrown into waterways which end up in the ocean. 90%+ of this waste comes from Asia and is wrecking havoc in the pacific ocean. But for your garden... it's just fine. The stress of worrying about it will kill you long before the plastics will.

U don’t need with the catfish. With proper feeding like in the video they grow 2-3 kg in 3 to 4 months and ready for consumption. That type of fish likes muddy water and likes to stay in dark. The biggest problem could be the water temperature if it goes very high they become very active and can turn to cannibalism. The plants are breaking the ammonia the water change could be good for dropping the high temperature down a bit. They r thriving in that pond for sure ! I’m reading a lot about this fish for years now. I got plans to make a catfish farm and I bought the land and next year I’m going back to my country to start building the farm the only issue I have it’s we got cold winter and I may have to do it in doors and that will cost me a lot of money to build but I will start slowly cuz heating the water in winter will cost me a lot of $ if I don’t find alternatives way to heat other than using electricity.
