- There are many who believe Peter Luger is the best steak in NYC, or Peter Luger is the best steak in the USA or even Peter Luger is the best steak in the world. However, we went to Peter Luger Steakhouse on this channel and we found Peter Luger overrated. The meat was chewy, lacking in strong meaty flavor, and the price was exorbitantly high. Peter Luger losing its Michelin Star seems to confirm that quality at the once legendary steakhouse in NYC has slipped drastically.
However, do not fret! Wolfgang's Steakhouse is one of the best steakhouses in NYC and Wolfgang's is still serving the original Peter Luger recipes. Founded by Wolfgang Zwiener, the former head waiter at Peter Luger of more than 30 years, Wolfgang's Steakhouse serves steak in the Peter Luger style, uses the Peter Luger meat supplier and its dry aging method, carries many of the Peter Luger menu items, such as the Peter Luger thick cut bacon, the Peter Luger sliced tomatoes and onions, and the Peter Luger german potatoes, and has waitstaff dressed in exactly the same manner as the Peter Luger waitstaff. If you are looking for the original Peter Luger taste, you can still find it at Wolfgang's. The similarities between the two restaurants are striking!

Same here! I've been watching video after video. At first, I thought he really didn't like a dish because of his facial expressions...but nope, it meant, he loved it!!! LOL

I been to Wolfgangs a couple of times... went here for a friends' 40th bday dinner back in march. Two things that I really loved before I get to food - outstanding service and true old school steakhouse vibe. For me those 2 things are pretty much a must (with the exception of del friscos double eagle - it's my wife family go to and i can't say no to steak and great drinks) .... anyways... the food.
My friends went crazy with the seafood (I've had a seafood allergy since my mid 20s - life is unfair) - they enjoyed it
also got the thick cut bacon (better than peter luger imo)
I had the Porterhouse for 2 medium rare... very good, wouldn't say better than Peter Luger, but just about on par with - I actually finished it on my own... was proud lol.
Had the Apple Strudel for dessert - outstanding.
They also had a great wine selection. Can't go wrong here.

Gallaghers steak house was mentioned in the comments. Never forget, we went to NYC for the Christmas show and I picked out Gallaghers for lunch. The other couples were repulsed by the dry aged raw meat display and the pricing! We sat down and left after the menu prices were looked at. Where did we go instead? TGIF! That was the last time we would go with them to the Christmas show. We went the next year, had a wonderful experience and food. I have a peter Luger charge card, always had a great meal there ten years ago. The first night I would have the steak for two plus all the trimmings, go there Tuesday night and have the chicken. Karl was my waiter of choice and enjoyed it all. Will give Wolfgang's a try next time in the city

Hi UA. I have seen a few of your food reviews and like them. The one point I'd suggest is, that instead of trying to put butter on the outside of the roil or bread slice, proper etiquette says, break off a small piece and butter that morsel of bread. A small point but I think it would help your tasting, as well. it looks more correct to us viewers. Cheers.
The reason I butter the outside is I need one hand to film and the other to butter. Breaking it first is an extra step with two hands and is tricky to film

Good question! They're very hard to compare, just different. Wolfgang's is more buttery. Gallaghers is not covered in butter but is an excellent steak with a different presentation style. I guess I give gallaghers an edge but it's totally personal preference here

Wolfgang’s Steakhouse is one of my favorite restaurant!❤. I usually get porterhouse for two and with mushroom sides. I never use the steak sauce because simply it doesn’t need it. Nice review, UA!

I wonder if Peter luger has been either changing to a different beef source for price or maybe not doing the dry aging (not sure if they ever were doing that). The extra chewiness is definitely something I notice distinctively when you go down the beef grades, but usually not too noticeable even at choice grade which is what most supermarkets sell anyway so that's quite interesting.
Probably a different beef source. They’re still dry aging 30 days.

Your honesty is refreshing to watch. Honesty is seriously underrated! $39 for a salad, fries and small skirt steak is absolutely overpriced!
The best steakhouse near me in Peoria Illinois is Alexanders, it has a 12 oz. Ribeye for $39, and that includes the salad bar. I had one the other night and it was amazing, with the salad bar and a soft drink my bill was about $43, with tip it cost me $50. And I only ate half my steak, I took the other half home with me to eat the next day. That is the high end.
I know another place that does a really good boneless Ribeye for $25, and that comes with 2 sides. I get it to go sometimes and take it home, it is almost as good as the Ribeye at Alexanders, for $15 cheaper, so that is what I usually get when I want a steak. $39 for a salad is laughable, and my Father would chew me out if I wasted $39 on a salad.
Peoria is in the middle of nowhere (no offense meant). In NYC rents are very high as are labor costs etc. So tourists will have sticker shock. @@steves2241

Your channel is amazing. I had peter luger and Wolf Gang steaks, and you are spot on Wolf gang steaks are far, far better. I love how you are truly honest. Also, Peter luger is super over-rated. I had it multiple times and not yet surprised me at all.
A part of me wants to try Peter Luger again sometime but it seems I'm not the only one who had a bad experience

I love Wokfgangs. I went there a couple years ago on Thanksgiving and it's one of my staples when I visit NYC. The one in Tribeca. Those potatoes are only second to Pappas Bros here in Dallas

Been to Gallagher’s because it’s close to the theater I went to, but I enjoy it immensely. Great drinks, great steak, great rolls and my waiter was awesome. Older, funny guy, with Two hearings aids, but was right on the money without intrusive service. I recommend them also. Wolfgang’s looks absolutely fantastic and it’s not all the way to Brooklyn. Nothing against Brooklyn but if I can save the trip!
I love Gallaghers too. It's one of my favorite steakhouses if not my absolute favorite

Been watching your videos. Fantastic. Question: are there any higher end steak houses that DON'T lather butter over steaks (because most Americans love butter)? I don't like butter because it coats my tongue and I can't taste the meat.
Get a tongue transplant. Could always try Golden Corral or Sizzler.

The challenge with steakhouses is that with the advent of the internet most people like me can make as good or sometimes better steaks thsn most of this RESTO and way way more affordable. My last visit to a well known steak outlet was good but somewhat underwhelming since we spent nearly 250$ for two and the service was very average.
Good point! I will argue that great steakhouses will still put out a superior product most of the time due to having access to better meat and kitchen appliances, but you're right that anyone these days can make an excellent steak at home that will be as good at least as most restaurants

So I've never been, but now I most certainly have to go! Definitely dig the old school vibe, and proper aged beef!
One for you to try, which I stumbled upon totally unplanned, but was extremely happy with is Porter House Bar & Grill by Chef Mike Lomonaco in the Time Warner Center. I went during lunch service and it was excellent!

I can get one of the best boneless Ribeye steak dinners I ever had for $25, from a place that is about half a block from where I live in Washington Illinois, it is called Palanzas. It is a 12 oz. boneless Ribeye, it comes with some kind of amazing mushroom sauce, and 2 sides, I usually get a baked potato and a salad, and it also comes with garlic bread that they make in house. I would rather have that than any $65 or higher steak from any so-called fancy steakhouse.

I never been to their NY location, they had another location in Miami which was amazing, best porterhouse steak i ever had, but after covid they never opened again sadly..

Wait til you learn that the branches of Wolfgang Steakhouse in Manila, Philippines charge approximately US$160 per Porterhouse or Ribeye steak.
Like watching your videos, one little bit of criticism would be the music. I think you can do without, or use it here and there. Keep it up!

All three steakhouses are excellent. I think it's just personal preference there. I like Gallaghers the most but that's just me
