  • On my fourth and final night in Meghalaya, I decided to wrap up my time in this beautiful and pristine state with a quick Khasi language lesson. The Khasi tribe is one of the three main tribes of Meghalaya. My boy Paul put me through a crash course of Khasi basics. He told me that the language is closer to those spoken in Cambodia and other southeast Asian countries. Here are the words and phrases he taught me to say:

Correction to Paul, though many outsiders consider that Meghalaya has '3 tribes' but actually there are only 2 TRIBES, the Garos and Khasi.
The notion that Jaintia is another tribe was infact the baby created by the British during their rule in our hills (remember their 'divide and rule' policy??) Jaintia was then Jaintiapur, the winter capital our our kings then which situated at Bangladesh border which still is.
As for the language every body knows the Khasi language are we called it today is the Khasi dialect spoken at Sohra( the one which Paul taught Dave in this video) and previous the existence of 'academic Khasi language' khasis speaks hundreds of dialects if not thousands, which is still being spoken now.

Interesting! I am Cambodian and am fascinated with the Austro-Asiatic language family. There are a few words that you said that sound similar to Cambodian but still unintelligible to my ears. BTW, Being American (of Cambodian descent), Cambodians and Vietnamese are unintelligible languages. I always thought Vietnamese language and culture are more Chinese-like. If westerners want to group Cambodians and Vietnamese as the same language family, then it is as distant as German and English (both unintelligible Germanic languages) or Italian and Romanian (both unintelligible Latin languages with one being Slavic influenced).
It is best to compare Cambodians to the Greeks of Asia (being the first Indianized civilization of Southeast Asia). Thais to the Romans of Asia (because they are highly influenced by Cambodian culture but have a completely different language family than Cambodians). Laotians being the Spaniards of Asia (being in the same language family as the Thais). And the Vietnamese to the Turkish of Asia (being a recent migrant into Southeast Asia and their civilization is more Chinese-influenced unlike Cambodians, Thais, and Laotians-who are all Indianized civilizations).
