E-MU PROTEUS PLUS ORCHESTRAL MPS - Can it Myst tho?

- The E-mu Systems Proteus Plus Orchestral Master Performnance System is a rare sampler from 1991-ish that made the famous Proteus 1 module in keyboard form. Famously used by Mark Snow of the X-files and Robyn Miller for the soundtrack of Myst. A really cool piece of gear from another time.

Corrections: Whistling Joe (X-files theme) is preset 483.
The E-mu Proteus MPS is a rompler, not sampler.
Myst came out in 1993, not 1995.
Loved this keyboard back in the 90s
One of my all time favorites!
Gosh that synth lead grabbed me so hard, I'd be tempted to buy this literally just to always have that sound on hand. I also make ambient / industrial so being 1991 is what we aim for.
They're usually pretty cheap to find! I love ambient and industrial so yeah, this one is perfect for me too
I know that Music Go Round had 2 in great shape for under $400 including shipping.
@@shyshift Shipping's free because it's pickup only, sadly.
WHat an entrance! Another great review man!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Bought it in Jan 1992, was a ground-breaker at the time. Had a road case for it, sold it about 5 years ago in mint condition. Kind of miss it, thought the keybed felt great.
The key bed is great! Honestly such a slept on synthesizer!
👍 still have mine need to get it out of the closet. Got it used at GC around 1995. Remember all these patches & names as you went through them. A piece of history worth keeping.
It really is incredible!
Wow, never seen this model. Great sounds and I can't believe how good of shape it's in.
You can still find these reasonably cheap every so often!
Found your channel through looking to see if I should keep my Proteuses (Protei?) and I'm super glad the algorithm did that. My wife and I are musicians and Myst has always been kind of a weird touchtone for people our age, haha. Anyway I showed her this video and she's like, "Wait, we have this?" I'm like, "Dude, they've been upstairs for years." So now she's back to being inspired by sound and the keys and playing in C minor (that's her "testing keys" key too haha), so thanks for reminding her a bit of why we got into this music thing to begin with.
Also, was stoked you're on the darker side of electronic music. Lmk if you're ever in need of strings of various types. 🤘
Wow that's so amazing!
I'm so glad you guys are getting some good stuff out of some old gear. I LOVE the sound of the Proteus.
Keep it dark 🌑
Very cool! :) Love the tones. Big Myst fan. Would love to see the synth used in Riven in action :P Which one was this?
When Robyn went into composing for Riven, they had enough money for him to use a lot of different samplers, but according to his page he used a Korg Trinity and a Yamaha VL1 as his main gear. The Trinity is one of Korg's most famous workstations and the VL1 is a physical modeling synth.
I think the reason why you didn’t like Wynwood Solo was because you left the mod wheel engaged and Steve doesn’t use it like in Arc Of A Diver.
The Seinfeld bass sound is a preset on the Korg M1
Ahhh, I have an M1 I haven't even turned on yet, can't wait to find it.
I heard it was a preset in the Proteus, with the orchestral card.
I too was blown when I discovered my Proteus MPS Plus didn't have the Whistl'n Joe patch.
Where that patch is located is often misreported online, but it does appear to be in the Proteus 2 module, which I don't believe ever got a full keyboard release.
@@VultureCulture I can confirm it's on the Proteus 2.
Yes Whistl’n Joe is 483 on the E-MU MPS. I don’t understand why you guys don’t have it. I own 2 and both have it.
It totally is there - I just didn't find it while recording this video (500 presets lol). I'll pin a comment mentioning this
@@VultureCulture Cool. I love your videos on this instrument. I bought my first used in 1992 on a year layaway payment of $25 per month. I received my second just today. I’m going to midi them and they look like bunk beds.
I love my proteus!❤
One of the all time greatest!
I'm probably wrong on some of these, but after listening to this and various soundtracks, I believe this synthesizer had been used for LEXX, Descent, Final Fantasy VII, Alundra 1 & 2, Age of Empires series, Are you Afraid of the Dark?, Diablo, and Radiant Silvergun.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was used for all of these! Here's a livestream I just did this week on some more sounds: ua-cam.com/users/liveAMq7JTK89ps
Those games used the Peter Siedlaczek's (Advanced) Orchestra + Orchestral Colours library. There was a ROM bank available for the E-Mu Proteus 2000 with a selection of those sounds, though they were cut down quite a bit compared to the original sample CDs (the E-MU ROM only has 32 MB of samples, compared to the over a gigabyte on the CD version, to be used with an AKAI sampler).
You can find a demonstration of what the E-Mu versions of that library sounded like on the site EmuMania.
Man for me it's all about the sounds here some are still timeless and holding up. So if you just want the sounds you can alternatively get a Proteus 2 Orchestral rack module and then find the Protozoa card.. is that how it goes? I do recognize the immediacy of the keys and controls and how fun that it. Sorry one last question when you play one patch and switch to the next live, does the decay of the previous patch cut off? Thanks for another in depth review that had me coming back for more.
I believe the MPS plus Orchestral is pretty damn close to the Proteus 1 plus Orchestral and the Proteus 2 - but each has slightly different patches. But if all you want are the sounds then absolutely save the money and get a Proteus rack unit.
And yes it does cut off the sounds.
I'm glad you enjoy them! 🙏
I just acquired an MPS, new parts, so cool, I have an older broken MPS but was wondering if you'd by chance have access to a service manual so I might reassemble with some confidence? Hank
I don't unfortunately Hank. The best I can suggest is googling for it, good luck with your older MPS
@@VultureCulture Ok, I've reassembled my MPS, it powers up, but no sound at all. Suggestions??
Uggghhhh.
Unfortunately I have zero technical knowledge when it comes to synth repair. Sorry man
do you still have the MPS? Want to sell the contact boards? Mine fried after a power bump but the mainboard is fine
@RagedContinuum sorry! I still have it but I love it too much to break it apart
Yes, it does have the X-Files Whistl'n Joe- patch number 183.
Yes! I finally found it after recording the video 🤦♀️
I’m a beginner using a MPC One ➕in standalone with a fully expanded Roland JV-1080 midi sound module & I wanted to know where can I get all of the wave files for the Emu Proteus 2000 The Mo Phatt & the Vintage Pro?
I'm pretty sure Digital Sound Factory is who sells all the E-mu stuff nowadays: www.digitalsoundfactory.com/product-category/popular-sounds/
Very nice collection of 8 megabytes of Emulator III samples.
I had just bought a 4 megabyte Emax II at the time, all this was available on disk. However I had to get a Syquest drive immediately afterwards because loading 8 floppy disks for every bank isn't practical.
Nice! Any other favorite Romplers from back in the day?
I was working in a small synth shop at the time (1991), we had the usual suspects... the Proteus line, Roland U-20 and Sound Canvas (the most generic sound module ever), the Ensoniq SD-1 with it's "transwaves" hahahha, but my favorite Rompler was the Kurzwiel K-2000. It also had 8 megs of ram with a classic selection of samples except it had multi-mode resonant filters and some killer synthesis functions, like waveshaping and cross modulation of samples. (Your SY-99 is the closest to it.) @@VultureCulture
@mitchelstephen7536 I gotta check out a k-2000 at some point!
I have one of this but don´t know where to find parts for this, I guess de mainboard is having some problems....
Other than Syntaur I have no idea about how to repair one, sorry.
Pretty n64 sounding.
I love that nostalgic sound!
What's behind the green door?
I don't think these sounds are dated at all, the original Proteus
modules are starting to become difficult to find. I'm hoping to
either buy a Proteus One Plus Orchestral or buy them as 2
separate modules since they are very slimline units. I also
have a Roland U-220 on it's way. The Proteus 2 Orchestral
came out in 1990 but both the Proteus Plus Orchestral
keyboard and module came out in 1991. I still prefer the
Roland U-220 when it comes to sounds like pianos, basses
and saxophones but the Proteus does have "realistic"
woodwinds. No Whistling Joe patch? Maybe I will wait until
the Proteus 1 and 2 modules are listed and in the mean time
continue to work with the Proteus sounds I have in DSK
Virtuoso, Synthway DrumWavy and Mixcraft's legendary
Acoustica Instruments library.
It does have the whistling Joe patch, I just didn't find it during the shooting of the video!
I really want to get my hands on a Roland u20
I honestly I only really like the basic waveforms and LFO's on the Proteus/2 overall. I mean it's alright to play with, but those are the only sounds on it that I'd say won't quickly drown out a actual recording mix with all the harshness and muddiness of the dated sound. I suppose if you're looking for a more muddy sound though.
I'm surprised it sounds harsh and muddy to you, to my ears it's surprisingly clean, with maybe a little of that old d-a grit.
Of course, different strokes for different folks. Maybe my ears are colored by nostalgia 🤪
I have one of these jewels in storage that I purchased in 1991. It is in mint condition but have lost the power cord to it. Any idea where I can find and purchase one?
I bought mine here: www.eprelectronics.com/store/E-mu-Keyboards-PARTS/E-mu-Proteus-MPS-Master-Proformance-System-Model-9030-9031/Power-supply-external-Proteus-MPS-p7.html
@@VultureCulture Many thanks VC!
Are there certain patches that the pitch knob won't work on?
Just picked up on of these used.
I actually don't know off the top of my head.
Enjoy that beautiful beast!
@@VultureCulture thanks man. Any recommendations for links or websites to fix it?
syntaur.com/keyboard.php?keyboard=E-mu_Proteus%20MPS for parts. As far as what to do - forums are your best bet I think
@@VultureCulture thanks so much for the guidance sir! Many blessings
🙏
Why am I focusing on the mysterious green lit door beyond you. Is the smoking man hog tied back there?
The world will go on. Just in my image instead of God’s.
@@VultureCulture deep cut quote lol! Nicely done sir.
👽
Me struggling to not go on to Reverb and ordering one or the rack version. I keep saying, "this sound is so cool... but I am sure I can recreate this well with my Kurzweil K2000S"
I've never had a Kurzweil - I've heard they're great.
Proteus 2's don't go for *that* much in rack mount.
@@VultureCulture I was looking at them last night because of course. I think I would probably go Proteus FX given it has both the rock/orchestral roms and sounds from the older Proteus racks.
I didn't know that! That's awesome!
@@VultureCulture Proteus FX is also home to the patch Infinite aka the GoldenEye sound. Version of it heard in Myst as well. Think of the Power Generator music.
Oh yeah! I did a live stream where I played golden eye and pulled up the sound on the Proteus to show the chat lol
Please help me, I make a reset factory and now no have a sound
I'm sorry, I don't know how to help with that ☹️
Where can I get the manual? Lol.
www.emumania.net/emu-proteus-mps-plus-orchestral-keyboard/
What type of microphone do you use to speak?
Avantone CV-12
@@VultureCulture This video shows a black dynamic microphone instead of the red one mentioned. What type of black?
It is an Avantone CV-12 - I painted it black. If it looks like a dynamic that's just the pop filter
7:19 is the Janeys got a gun sound in the intro
That's awesome! I had no idea
@@VultureCulture I own the mps + orchestral since it came out. Lost the sound on the rom cards sadly.
did buying the prologue send you on a vintage synth buying spree?!!
It did 🤦♀️
Not a sampler, but a ROMpler. I love mine, but it sure is dated sounding.... sometimes in a good way, but not always.
I love it for that early 90's sound!
6:57 So, when you do find a preset used in Myst you don't mention its name? 🤯😏
I looked up the manual and it seems you just follow the numbers, so I guess this is preset 019 Kalimba synth?
My bad! Yes I believe that's correct
The Korg Prophecy has the whistler patch used in X-Files.
It might have something similar but Mark Snow used a Proteus 2 rackmount on the Whistlin Joe patch
MYST was 1993 not 1995
Thank you! I've added that to the list of corrections
Nice video, but I don't think it was a sampler. :)
What would you call it then?
@@VultureCulture I would just call it a keyboard as I don't think you can sample sounds into it. Regardless loved your video.
@@johnnydekock Doesn't sample, but the SUB1/SUB2 can mix in instruments or effects. Sampling implies it has built in recording functionality.
There is a term that is useful in cases like this: ROMpler. Because it is a sample-based instrument; you just can't record new samples
This is definitely what I should have refered to it as.
This is NOT a sampler!!!!
I should have said Rompler.
If you want more subscribers, perhaps you could consider dropping the expletives. I'm not easily offended, and I use them myself (when I'm angry), but on the other hand, I don't create UA-cam videos either. The expletives don't add anything meaningful, and just make you sound uncouth.
I hear you. I know it offends some people, all I can say is it's who I am.
Thank you for watching and commenting 🙏
I was watching and had to turn it off when my 8 year old was close by.
