Yeah you are right in Gambia, Sénégal,Guinea Bissau plus the jahake sub group speak the same dialect of mandinka but can really understand the dialect of mandinka spoken in Guinée Conakry, Ivory coast (djula)and Mali whos mandinka has big influence of Bambara. I agreed Gambian mandinka also had influenced with other tribes when they immigrated during mali Empire expansion.

Over 95% of Gambia is Muslim so did you find it very strict in certain aspects, more so than in some Arab countries or is it more free? I ask as a non-Muslim (Sikh) who would like to visit Africa, but am unsure how easy going it is compared to say some North African countries where they're used to tourists. Is alcohol freely available there for example, at least in hotels and some bars? From London, UK

I have never lived in an Arab country but from what I do know about Gambia is that it is not strict and very open to non Muslims. Under Yahya Jammeh it was illegal be openly homosexual but I don't think Barrow would enforce that. Men and women mix quite often and don't think anything of it unlike Arabs and other Muslims from my observations.
