For real, you can technically convert from mp4 to mp3 by changing the file extension name but then you still have all the data from the video taking up space on your hard drive except now the video isn't visible.
I love VLC! It is really too powerful. I also have to mention another one - Free HD Video Converter Factory which also can convert MP4 to MP3 easily. These 2 converters are my favorites. I love them.
Finally, an honest person giving honest and clear information converting mp4 to mp3. Every other page or video offering help is mostly a con to put virus on your computer. thank your ProgrammingKnoweldge2 I will subscribe to your teaching.

A little advice to people: This still works even in the most recent VLC version. Also your VLC seems to act kind of weird after it's done converting, that might be normal behaviour every time it does an operation like, so don't panic. Your file will play nicely regardless Another thing, try using the FLAC file type, as it gives you a much better sound quality than an ordinary mp3, specially if you transform an HD video file.

At 1.48 I clicked on the 'edit selected profile' box (next to the drop box he uses) and then clicked 'avi' in the encapsulation page, clicked save, then 'start' and it seems to have converted the video. I'm just trying another file and VLC has crashed several times, but now it is converting again. Try it.

thanks, I've been looking for this, to change .m4a to mp3. Itunes just laughed, but i could use vlc IF I converted to mp3 (mp4) only. And it's very slow. But at least it's possible.

Why not try appgeeker converter, it works well all the time.
i think you not save the save extension as .mp3 that is why it become 0 bytes

i don't have the option "Media" from where you selected "Convert"
If you don't add the dot MP3 to the filename for the converted file, VLC will create an MP4 file with audio, but no video. Weird.
