Thanks for all the comments and discussion of this car. It does raise interesting questions about what consumers should expect from a low-cost car. We believe that it's OK to remove luxuries if it saves buyers money, but safety should be standard. The design of the Nano's front suspension channels crash energy into the occupant's legs instead of the vehicle structure. That can never be justified from a cost perspective.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the NANO designed to be a replacement for those families riding with 3+ people on a motorcycle? Comparing this vehicle to modern car crash standards is apples to oranges. Why not compare it to a motorcycle at 64kmph? After all, that is what it is replacing
M Bro So, I'm curious about the logic you're applying here. Are you saying that just because the the Nano was meant to be a replacement for families of a particular demographic, it is allowed to be unsafe? I ask because that also translates into - instead of dying riding a two-wheeler, they'd rather be maimed or die in the confines of a little car in AC comfort? If the car is driving on modern roads, alongside other modern vehicles, shouldn't it also match up to safety standards?
***** Well said. At the end of the day, you could probably die in a 5-star NCAP rated car at a stop light, doing 0 kmph. I believe the NCAP-rating is an indicator of survivability rather than invincibility in a road crash scenario.
***** Whoa! I don't exactly know what about my comments has upset you. No, I'm not immortal, and I don't seem to accidentally claim it either. I still do agree with what you say - that any car could kill you - whether it is one's own fault or that of someone else. The NCAP ratings grade cars on chances of what would perform better in crash situations. That said, I still believe the Nano is like providing those who can't afford better with a compromise that could cost them their lives.
Dhanushka Jayaweera a nano's cruise speed is 80kmph its the smoothest at that speed. besides are you sure you can survive a crash in your car if its hit head on by a truck and I mean a truck not a suv.

Many people in India are very poor and some travel with up to 5-6 people on ONE motorbike. Traveling with that many people on a single motorbike is heaps more dangerous than this car. From what I have read here I see there are 2 camps of different opinion. One group says for the amount of money you are paying, 2 grand for a car, it's okay to compromise on safety and on another is saying safety features should be standard no matter what. For me, if you (you here implies someone or an organisation) are going to build a car, safety is a MUST. The company that builds this car should really consider all their customers lives are as important if not more than their own. Human lives are not measured by wealth. Seriously, if you want to buy a car but can't afford it, it's wiser to get a used car rather than buying a new cheap car with zero safety. At the end of the day, you still spend 2k for a car irregardless of new or used. Just my 2 cents.
You have to remember most people in the developing world are DIRT POOR. You have to look at it's target market-- if a family can't buy this, they'll just keep buying scooters/trikes and load up their whole family in them as always.
Then don't buy a car that compromise on safety if dirt poor. Walk, horse, bicycle scooter anything which is by far much safer than this. You just have to know what is best for you. Problem with people is they don't know or care.
Alvin Lim Have you ever been to a rural area of a 3rd world country? The families there already walk and bike as much as they can; but undeveloped areas have LOTS of farmland, so everything is many miles apart, so it's not practical. It's all dependent on the culture of manageable risks; there are some really TERRIBLE motorbike accidents that happen in Asia, but over there it's considered an acceptable risk; the price of living. In that case this car isn't seen anything different.
@@mahendra47913 My comment was for @comicnerd1186, I can remember of a article about it in Hindustan times. Quality of TATA cars was worst at that time but now they are top in safety for cars in india.
Tata nano is made for those lower class families who can't afford the car and still use bikes for there family use So this tata nano cost approx 1.5 lakh rupees.
I am not so sure about all these people (mainly from India defending their pride and joy, methinks) that crashing this car would be safer than crashing a scooter. Crash a scooter and you're thrown off - from then on it's anybody's guess. Crash this car and you're trapped inside. There is no guessing, your legs will be mauled and if you are the driver, your throat will be mauled by the steering wheel. Personally, in a head-on chash at low speed as in the above test, I would prefer to be on a motorcycle, wearing a helmet and protective clothing. Also, despite our Indian friends repeating over and over that this is a 2000 dollar car: the argument still stands that, for the same amount, you can buy a secondhand car that is a lot safer. I recently sold a 10 year old 5 star car with 8 air bags for roughly that amount.
***** look on youtube Yamaha Rhino or-Kawasaki Mule... That safer than this car cost not a lot more... and it an offroad vehicle that the kind of vehicle india need
***** Tell that to my dearly departed friends who were killed on a motorcycle because a car turned left in front of them. He was only moving at 60km/h yet I had to deliver a part of his eulogy and served as a pall-bearer for her on the same day a week later. To say that you'd rather be in a head-on collision on a bike than in ANY kind of car shows that you have no idea what you're talking about. Being thrown from a car is the #1 cause of death resulting from not wearing a seat belt. You think being thrown from a bike is any different? He was my best friend and he was thrown 100m onto pavement. He died on the operating table. Motorcycles are THE WORST things allowed on the road today. ANY car is safer than a bike, and I do mean ANY.
Avro Arrow You misquoted me - a couple of times even. First I didn't write that I would "rather be in a head-on collision on a bike than in ANY kind of car". Secondly, if your best friend was thrown 100 m onto pavement (I shudder the thought and can feel nothing but pity for those who were involved and left behind), it was obviously not a crash "at low speed as in the above test" as I said. I do see that you claim that any car is safer than a bike, is that correct? I definitely agree with that as long as you restrict "any car" to cars like you can get in Europe. But I firmly stand by my assessment that, in a crash like this (read that again if necessary), on a bike you do actually stand half a chance, but in this tin can? You'll be mauled, with no chance to escape.
It was made for people who couldn't afford a car so TATA made an affordable car for the price of a bike but unfortunately people couldn't understand the motive behind it was for their safety
The world's cheapest new car....can easily shatter into scraps. But a good ol' Volvo 240 for worth a price of that can withstand more damage, and can be much safer.

Now where are the Tata fanboys who are so proud of Tata's build quality that they call it 'desh ka loha' 😂
Name any TATA car below 4 Star rating in 2024.
none
It's 10 year ago when you didn't born 🤣🤣🤣
@@mahendra47913 My comment was for @comicnerd1186,
I can remember of a article about it in Hindustan times. Quality of TATA cars was worst at that time but now they are top in safety for cars in india.
Tata nano is made for those lower class families who can't afford the car and still use bikes for there family use
So this tata nano cost approx 1.5 lakh rupees.
You expect 5 star on rate of bikes? This car was already ahead at that time with the price.
Cars with no airbags should not be a thing anymore.
Anthony Pizarro 1700 usd ? seriously i want one ahah it cheaper than golfcart
***** well he was traveling at 60km/h and a corolla turned left in front of him. At that speed, 300' isn't all that far.
Way better and safe than a bike or two wheeler for people who can't afford cars
Who after ratan tata death
Me
😢
Please test Kia sonet
Still better than riding on motor bikes 🏍
Motor bike are worst?
@@TrueForr yes people get killed even by small mistake
It fits India's driving needs. Their driving is not so fast and really tight.

Made in India 🇮🇳✌️
Serious structure collapse similar to the small overlap crash test IIHS performed on the Nissan Quest and the Mazda CX-9!
See this ua-cam.com/video/OjNhW3Oapqk/v-deo.html,
TATA : And i took it personally
Bcs they still produce shits
It was made for people who couldn't afford a car so TATA made an affordable car for the price of a bike but unfortunately people couldn't understand the motive behind it was for their safety
Tata Nano - Its a car and a coffin
Hence doubling it's value!
See this ua-cam.com/video/OjNhW3Oapqk/v-deo.html,
Now i know that not all zeros are equal.. there are big zeros and small zeros
♫ Baby you can drive my coffin ♫
Not Tata has Changed rules. Below 4 stars impossible
Why did my grandparents buy this car?? Why didn't they buy a mercedes or VW like my parents did?
ngl this is far better than riding a motorcycle 😂😅
Not at all it just increases the crowd on road 😅and you know indian road 🤡
@@Atheist87387 technically yes
Who is watching this in 2024?
Sim
Making fun of Tata when its was helping people vs now Global NCAP cannot even drop a star for their cars
Helping people by crashing them 😂
and tata took it seriously
This is an advanced motorcycle,,which should be driven with a motorcycle protection gear

RIP ratan tata
Tata now - what gncap 💀
The impact absorber(blue box) hardly crimped an inch. As a fool i would blame nano, But i have doubts on blue box rigidity!.
But safer then a bike
not bad
10/10 ign
not airbags
See this ua-cam.com/video/OjNhW3Oapqk/v-deo.html,,
People are comparing this car with normal cars but in real this car is alternative of bikes and scooters
Nano to punch .. for who made fun of this car
Well it would be embarrassing if a car which cost 7x more didn’t have better safety
From back side Tata Nano is strong because it's engine is placed in back side of the car.
still safer than a bike.
I'd rather be hit on my motorbike - at least I'd have a chance of avoiding the danger or being thrown clear. In this deathtrap you'd have no chance...
Still better than van 🤣
The world's cheapest new car....can easily shatter into scraps.
But a good ol' Volvo 240 for worth a price of that can withstand more damage, and can be much safer.
See this ua-cam.com/video/OjNhW3Oapqk/v-deo.html,
Volvo makes strong cars no question.
