The drummer from Damn Yankees was a hometown friend (Akron,OH) Michael Cartellone | He moved to NY a couple of years ahead of me and I literally watched him go from living in a Basement in Queens with 5 musicians to playing Radio City with Tommy Shaw in the space of few months. Wonderful, hard hitting drummer that has been able to forge a successful career as a working musician over the course of the last 30 years....

Popoff and Pardo are at it again with the final "blender" episode for this particular group in the 90s and beyond. Really enjoyed Martin's opening comments to the show though, and might have just missed it, but where was the weather report for Canada and the Hudson Valley? In any event, still not familiar enough with all these albums to make significant comment except to say of the ones in the personal library, BOC's The Symbol Remains currently sits atop the list. Thanks again to Martin and Pete for making a challenging task so entertaining for those of us watching. Another fine episode from The Funhouse. There ya go!

Pete and I have very similar tastes. I would definitely have Symbol Remains and Heaven Forbid by BOC as #1 and #2. Both are exceptionally strong LPs. If Heaven Forbid had come out in the late 1970's or the early 1980's it would have gone platinum and the trajectory of the band might have been very different. I'm very fond of Spectres and Mirrors as there as some real gems on those LPs, but they were much mellower than their earlier LPs and BOC lost some of their momentum and their original fan base. They got some momentum back with the excellent Fire of Unknown Origin in 1981, but BOC wasn't big enough to weather the storm of changing musical shifts in the 1980's and the Revolution By Night and Club Ninja LPs really missed the mark. If those two LP's weren't released and Heaven Forbid had been released in 1982 or 1983 as the follow-up to FOUO it would have been a massive seller rather than a niche LP for BOC diehards. Timing matters. BOC strayed too far from the original formula at the wrong time...BTW go see BOC live if they come near your town. The amazing Blue Oyster Cult are still amazing live in concert, but without the pyrotechnics...

Ghost Stories is really for the hardcore fan. A collectible of sorts, to round out the collection. I’ve been a fan for over 40 years, so at this point in time, I view The Symbol Remains as their “last” album. Hopefully there’s one more to come…though Eric does turn 80 this year, so I have to temper my eagerness. And from what I’ve read, Buck has a solo song he’s finishing up, not an entire album. Hope I’m wrong there.

Nice job fellas! I can’t really do a full ranking as I am only familiar with Aerosmith, Kiss and BÖC’s catalog from the 90’s. Overall the BÖC albums stand head, shoulders and a tall hat above anything done by Aerosmith or Kiss despite the hits and sales Aero had. Just my opinion though, I really think BÖC should have had more success with those albums.

You guys know the story behind Carnival of Souls? The band recorded it in late 1994/early 1995 and shelved it. Bootlegs started leaking, online but they didn't want to release it because MTV Unplugged blew up with the Ace and Peter guest appearances and it led to the reunion. But they were already paid for the record by Mercury, so they slapped it together, released in in the middle of the whole reunion. It was all about $ at that point.

What's funny is Blue Oyster Cult's Ghost Stories, an album of demos and rehearsal material, still ended up being better than a few of the other bands studio material. BOC just wanted to get those songs out for their fans in the best quality they could. Kiss, Aerosmith and Ted Nugent were trying to make actual "quality" albums. 🤣

Most of the Aerosmith 90's albums are average at best with regards to the production and hired hand lyrics, having said that in terms of musicianship and having one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time in Steven Tyler they blow the Kiss and Nugent albums out of the water in this time period, I can't include B.O.C as I'm not too familiar with their 90's output.

I wouldn't call "Eyesight to the Blind", "I'm Ready", "Stop Messin' Around" or especially "Baby Please Don't Go" obscure blues songs. Maybe it's because I love Sonny Boy Williamson II, the original Fleetwood Mac and Muddy Waters. Bo Diddley's "Road Runner" is quite famous too, at least here in Finland, because Hurriganes (the biggest band ever in Finland) did a cover of it and even named their most legendary album after it.

Though there were some good tracks on Spirit of the Wild & Craveman. Damn Yankees- great songs & hooks,Shaw & Blades harmonies & guitar work by Uncle Ted!!! The Symbol Remains & Heaven Forbid are head & shoulders above the 90's & beyond output of really any "classic rock" group....unless your a blues fan and spin a little Goverment Mule/but....a different animal. What I find a bit strange with Aerosmith. The band was bigger than ever in the 1990's. "Get a Grip" is their best sold album if I am not mistaken. The ballads Angel, Janie's Got A Gun, Crazy, Cryin', Amazing, I Don't Want To Miss A Thing were all huge songs. Even today.. A new video of these songs on UA-cam can go up to millions of views in a short time. At the same time Aerosmith is a quite inactive band that the younger generations don't really know much about. NOBODY seems to like them when talking about them online. How is that? Does people really hate them as much as they say? If so, who is listening to them so much decades after the releases?

Spirit of the Wild is good Uncle Ted album. The solo in Fred Bear is awesome. Teds playing a PauI Reed Smith guitar that he also played on little miss Dangerous and with the Damn Yankees. I think the the finger picking chords in the intro and verses is cool. The song is a tribute to a great Michigan archery hunter who Ted met and had a friendship with who had died. It's a hunting anthem. Derek St. Holmes came back to sing and play on the record. And both Damn Yankees albums are excellent and Ted's playing is great on both of them. All of the Ted and Damn Yankees records blow away every other album away. Maybe Revenge from Kiss is the only other one here that is even remotely decent.

I don't like most of these albums. Until 1992 Aerosmith was my favorite rock band. Then Get A Grip came out and they kept shitting the bed thereafter.
Nuge is not a good singer. He needs Derek St. Holmes but Uncle Ted can't stand sharing the spotlight so he makes records now that only Martin wants to hear.
KISS made consistently OK records. I don't hate any of them so that puts them ahead of Aerosmith and The Nuge.
B.O.C. I have these albums except Ghost Stories, and I don't recall hating them but I haven't listened to them in years.
Of all these bands Damn Yankees' output is without doubt my favorite. 2 great albums. Shaw and Blades wrote memorable songs, sang amazing harmonies, and Nuge lit a rock and roll fire under their asses. I saw them 4-5 times live and they were awesome. They had tons of fun and it made the shows highly entertaining.
If they included solo stuff I'd put Joe Perry's albums all in my top 10. It would probably be Damn Yankees at 1 and 2, then the Joe Perry albums and Reunion by Whitford/St. Holmes.

I pretty much stopped following some of those bands later stuff, so here is my top 5 from for the albums I know/own. Obviously I need to check out some of the recent BOC and Ted Nugent.
    1. Damn Yankees - Damn Yankees
    2. KISS - Revenge
    3. Aerosmith - Get A Grip
    4. KISS - Psycho Circus
    5. Damn Yankees - Don't Tread

Just push play is awful, nine lives is awesome way better than get a grip, Crash is one of Aerosmith's finest songs and many other great songs on the album to., nine lives was the last good Aerosmith album. For me freedom fighter is their best song of the 21st century which Joe Perry sings from music from another dimension.

Looks like on the home stretch with this topic...Again for me I like almost nohing Nugent's done post 70's (incl Damn Yankees) & not into Kiss at all (except for a handful of their hits). So Aerosmith/BOC it is! My ranking, both bands clearly no longer in their heyday by this point - also I'm an Aerosmith fan but less into BOC so that's reflected here:
    1. Get a Grip, Nine Lives
    2. Aerosmith Unplugged 1990
    3. The Symbol Remains, Joe Perry Project (2005), Heaven Forbid
    4. Aerosmith MTV Unplugged, Up In Smoke
    5. Music From Another Dimension, Curse Of The Hidden Mirror
    6. Just Push Play, Ghost Stories, Sweetzerland Manifesto, Sweetzerland Manifesto MKII
    7. You Gotta Move, Rockin' The Joint, Honkin' on Bobo, Cult Classic (many great tunes but why rerecord them?), Have Guitar Will Travel, Reunion (Whitford/St Holmes)

Can we expand the palette just a little? Bad Company, Bad Religion, Ben Folds, Billy Joel, Billy Squier, Blur, Bod Dylan, Bob Seger, Bon Jovi, Boston, Bruce Springsteen, just to take a few from the "B's"? Those are all classic rock, with the possible exception of BR, BF, and Blur. Love your discussions. I just wish you had more varied artists you cared to debate.

How long have you been subscribed to Sea of Tranquility?
"Bad Company, Billy Joel, Billy Squier, Bob Seger, Bon Jovi, Boston, Bruce Springsteen"
I certainly know Pete (and possibly) Martin have definitely discussed all of those on SoT. They've discussed them plenty.
Pete is not a big Bob Dylan fan, thats why he is rarely if ever mentioned.
Bad Religion, Ben Folds and Blur have not been discussed ,to my knowledge. But they are not classic rock/hard rock, prog, jazz fusion/jazz rock or metal bands, those are the genres this channel covers.

    • @taoofjohnandpaul
      @taoofjohnandpaul 6 місяців тому

Yeah, I don't buy it. They can and should expand their range. Ted Nugent?! Laughable waste of time since the '70's. Many more great artists to critique. And, again, I only mentioned a few of the "B's"!

    • @jimmycampbell78
      @jimmycampbell78 6 місяців тому +2

@@taoofjohnandpaul SoT covers an insane number of bands/artists if you look across the channel. Pete doesn't like Bob Dylan, he doesn't like punk, he doesn't like pop, he doesn't like country and he only likes a handful of alternative/new wave type bands. But there's so much in the genres he does cover.
There really aren't many UA-cam channels that cover a huge range of genres, most specialise.
I think your criticism that SoT need to expand their range is way off.
If you look at Popoff/Contrarians, their channel covers a wide range of artists.
If you just didn't like this particular series grouping on SoT: Nugent, Aerosmith, BOC then fair enough...but I also sense you were triggered by them discussing Nugent in particular? If this is the case, I'd say your criticism has nothing to do with music.

@@taoofjohnandpaul It's not a case of 'loyalty', I just think you are plain wrong. I can't think of any other UA-cam channel that has a broader 'palette'. Can you name any other channel mainly run by one guy that has multiple rankings and multiple discussions which cover metal, prog, classic rock and also the additional genres you mentioned- punk, indie/alternative rock and new wave. Oh, and does reviews of fresh new releases (not just reissues and box sets). I look forward to seeing whoever you suggest.
