- The British comedy classic Fawlty Towers has been remade four times, and each time they failed. But why?
John Cleese and Connie Booth's masterpiece has been adapted three times in America and once in Germany. This video essay documentary takes a look at each one: Snavely, Amanda's, Payne and Zum Letzten Kliff.
Fawlty Towers starred John Cleese as Basil Fawlty, Prunella Scales and Sybil Fawlty, Andrew Sachs as Manuel, and Connie Booth as Polly. It ran on the BBC for two series in 1975 and 1979. In 2023, John Cleese announced that he will reboot Fawlty Towers with the help of his daughter.
Snavely starred Harvey Korman and Betty White, and was made in 1978 for ABC.
Amanda's (Amanda's By The Sea) starred Bea Arthur, and was broadcast on ABC in 1983.
Payne starred John Larroquette and JoBeth Williams, and was shown on CBS in 1999.
Zum Letzten Kliff (On the Last Cliff) starred Jochen Busse and was made for RTL in 2001.

What do you think about the four remakes?
Terrible. They shouldn't have bothered remaking them.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.
What are the chances the first two protagonists both starred in the Star Wars holiday special.
Interesting trivia
Snavely was even made the same year as The Star Wars Holiday Special.
falty towers had that insulting senxe of houmur which is only found in booth england and ireland
WHAT ever happened to originality??? George Lucas always complained that Battlestar Galactica was a rip off of Star Wars (Valley Of The Dinosaurs is very similair to Land Of The Lost).
They ruined Fawlty Towers😮
No they didn't, they just make their own shit for there own f*ck*ng country
Payne could have worked with better writing.
But overall the differences between US and UK can be seen in the TV shows
Sometimes it works, but…
Americans resorting to low-brow comedy. Who knew?
There is no need on tryung to improve upon an original, usually.. These look Abysmol!
Having been a big fan of Faulty Towers when it first came out, I recently watched it again.
It hasn't stood the passage of time. It's very dated. With cringe worthy stock characters, much over acting and silly corny jokes.
It just isn't funny now. In fact most of it was cringe worthy
