  • Creating surround sound random panning trajectories in Reaper is simple using Parameter Modulation and ReaSurroundPan.

[NOTE: It looks like in the latest version of Reaper they moved “Parameter modulation/MIDI link” to where it is no longer a submenu of “FX parameter list"....you can just select “Parameter modulation/MIDI link” directly under "Param." This tutorial was made with Reaper v6 a few months before v7.]
Here I have an instance of an octophonic panner for a mono input, but this idea will work for other configurations. Please see my previous tutorial for configuring your project.
We are going to first randomize the X axis: In the Param menu select “FX parameter list,” then “Parameter modulation/MIDI link” and here you will see a list of the parameters available.
From the list, select “in 1 X.”
In the window that opens for “Parameter Modulation/Link in 1 X,” select LFO, then click negative.
Next, change the shape to “random”
Go again to the Param menu, select “FX parameter list,” then Parameter modulation/MIDI link and select “in 1 Y.” Select LFO and change it to random. Leave this one set to “positive.”
Finally, if you would like to go 3D, go one last time to the Param menu, select “FX parameter list,” then Parameter modulation/MIDI link and select “in 1 Z.” Select LFO and change it to random. Leave this one set to “positive.”

Thanks for making these videos, I have been using Ableton for a while developing multichannel sound works as an installation sound artist, but reaper is far more powerful for this. I am watching all of your videos to gain a greater understanding - just wanted to express my gratitude as there is not a lot of videos like this around.

Thank you! I use (and LOVE) Ableton as well, and I also agree that Reaper has a lot more to offer at this time for multichannel works. And it is also a lot of fun-as is Ableton!

FX Parameter list greyed out for me. How do I fix that?

I just checked, it looks like in the latest version of Reaper they moved “Parameter modulation/MIDI link” to where it is no longer a submenu of “FX parameter list"....you can just select “Parameter modulation/MIDI link” directly now under "Param." (This tutorial was made with Reaper v6 a few months ago.)
