This piece, Even Stones Have Memories, is an excerpt from a series of works I have created to pay homage to trumpet player and composer Jon Hassell.
Generative software is playing all the non-trumpet parts, in particular: KaiGen-M2 for bass and pads, KaiGen-R2 for percussion, and KaiGen-Smaple-Palyer for voice samples. I authored them in Max/MSP and run them as Max for Live Plugins in Ableton Live. All are freely available on my website and fully hackable in Max. The trumpet is being processed live by a combination of Eventide, PSP Audioware, and my own custom plugins.

Flugelhorn improv with KaiGen-I (generative software) and Ableton Live playing a prepared piano
Переглядів 3064 місяці тому
In this video I improvise playing flugelhorn with my software, KaiGen-I running inside of Ableton Live. I created KaiGen-I with Max/MSP, a visual programming environment. KaiGen-I is software that improvises along with human musicians and/or itself. In this instance, I made it into a Max for Live plugin that runs inside Ableton Live. KaiGen-I is playing IRCAM's prepared piano library. You can h...

Beautiful! This really has that otherworldly feel that Hassell’s music did. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Dave! So glad you enjoyed it.
this is awesome man
Thank you!
Amazing
Thanks, Gary!
I love what the sunlight is doing on the window. Love this.
Magical.
Thank you!!!
wonderful
Thank you!
Fantastic !
Thanks, Jim!
Jeff, this is quite lovely. As a trubute, I think you have caught the "spirit" and tone of Jon Hassell pretty precisely. But you have definitely added a dash of creative Kaiser sauce to the recipe. I like it. Mos' definitely.
Wow, thank you! 😊
nailed it again
Thank you!
brother in christ move the microphone away from your mouth
how do you change the pitch by dragging? that doesn't work for me
Please check the errata in the description, my apologies…Option-shift on Mac or Alt-shift on Windows and drag inside the media item to change the pitch up or down.
Awesome. No unnecessary BS, straight to the point. Love it!
:-) :-) :-) Thank you! That is the goal.
pretty awesome simplexity what are you using for the instrument sounds?
Those are all libraries from Native Instruments…! :-) Studio Drummer, Session Guitarist, and the bass is from the Factory Selection.
Read the manual😂
You're the best, thanks for getting straight to the point and making it very clear. Took me a google search to find this guide, I didn't really click with any of the ones it was trying to show me on the youtube recommendations
Thank you, “to the point” is my goal! :-)
lovely
Thank you, Andrew!
Just beautiful Jeff.
Simple and to the point. Thanks!
❤
Really quite amazing you two! Bravo 👏 👏 👏
Thank you so much!
another WOW from me. Nice camera shot beautiful Improv. I dig the way you played off each other,, real muso stuff. Dusting off my trombone after this
Thank you! It's amazing what a GoPro on the floor as an afterthought can do(!)
Amazing! Beautiful and innovative! ❤ Thank you for the inspiration.
Thank you so much!
wow
:-) Thank you!
Thanks for making these videos, I have been using Ableton for a while developing multichannel sound works as an installation sound artist, but reaper is far more powerful for this. I am watching all of your videos to gain a greater understanding - just wanted to express my gratitude as there is not a lot of videos like this around.
Thank you! I use (and LOVE) Ableton as well, and I also agree that Reaper has a lot more to offer at this time for multichannel works. And it is also a lot of fun-as is Ableton!
A joyful deviousness
Very intriguing sound creation. Your KaiGen M4L device is super cool!
Thank you!
I really loved that, Jeff. Thanks!
Thank you!!! 🙂
So nice, and fun. Your eyes and your smilles playing=joy❤
Thank you :-) I have a blast playing with my technological friend
cool!!! I need to pick your brain about a setup!
Any excuse to hang out with you! :-)
0:22 🤣
Thanks Jeff, I stumbled across your channel while searching for info on FX chains. I really like your presentation style and ReaSurroundPan has me curious - if I use this but the audio is played through a stereo device, will it simply revert to "regular panning" or best not to use it? Subscribed, and hope to see more Reaper tutes!
Hi Rowan, thank you! It does not revert to stereo, for most uses I would just use the stereo panner that is on each track and not use the ReaSurroundPan if the final goal is stereo. How you handle it, however, really depends on your goals, because you can put a binaural panner *after* ReaSurroundPan to convert the surround mix to stereo that simulates the surround in your headphones…
I suddenly had a folder, no idea why ! great video. I assume getting rid of a folder is the reverse ?
In the lower left corner of the track (project window) there is an icon of a folder...If it is already a folder track, when you mouse over it it will turn into an "X" that will change the track into not being a folder…if it is not yet a folder track, it will be a "+" it will turn it into a folder.
FX Parameter list greyed out for me. How do I fix that?
I just checked, it looks like in the latest version of Reaper they moved “Parameter modulation/MIDI link” to where it is no longer a submenu of “FX parameter list"....you can just select “Parameter modulation/MIDI link” directly now under "Param." (This tutorial was made with Reaper v6 a few months ago.)
It was a great pleasure to watch
Thank you!
What a sweet gay voice. Cheers dear
fantastic!!
I love this Jeff . . . and it's just a "sound check?" Of course I have been a serious fanboy of your work for all of the 36 years I have known you. Keep it up.
nice
Love it! Thanks for sharing Jeff. (Had a blast hanging out with you and your compadres at Sparks, Minneapolis 2007. Cheers, Jamie (Tasmania))
Awesome to hear from you, Jamie, and thank you!!! :-)
are you by any chance aware of a way to create razor edit areas while keeping item selection?
great video, thank you
Thank you!
lolololololol Can we get the hallelujah chorus next
We can do that! 😀😀😀
Amazing
❤️❤️❤️
thank you Jeff! Greatings from Bariletti
Bariletti!!!! Always good to hear from you! 🙂
Very Jeff.
Ahahahaha!
Can y pitch up record. Like you can in 4 tracks cassette recorders
In the lower right corner (on the default theme) there is a global playback rate....you can automate that by showing the master track (View->"Master Track"). I hope this helps!
@@JeffKaiser thank you
shift + alt + drag on PC for pitch
Yeah I just figured it out 😂👌🏻 thanks
I enjoy the way you mix neutral seconds and periodic-sounding multiphonic-like things in this piece
Thank you Stephen! :-)
Thanks great video. Child tracks in my reaper sessions don't automatically send to the parent track. What to do?
Hi Erand, thanks for watching! There is a "Main (parent) send" in the Preferences->Projects->Track/send defaults that might not be selected? Unfortunately, I'm only guessing without being able to see it.
@@JeffKaiser hi Jeff, thank you for the reply but I ticked that option but it makes no difference, only for new child tracks. 😊
@@eranddroory9987 I'm so sorry, I don't know(!) :-) It is working as expected here, and only stops on specific tracks if I deselect the "Parent send channels to/from" in the route for the selected child... I wish I could help.
Thank you very much Jeff, this is just what I 've been looking for-for ages .I an not hot on files /doccuments etc, this was in my language and Not trying to get a load of other stuff crammed in which always seems to create ambiguity .THAK YOU again. Kind regards, Baden H
Excellent! Thank you for the comment, and so glad the tutorial was helpful! :-)
so Bee-like. That should not be a surprise. I have bee messing with Strega (Make Noise) and this audio has some of the same charm.
Hey Jim! I read "bee messing with Strega" and thought you were feeding bees the liqueur. :-) I made one with bees as well: ua-cam.com/video/TV5P75th9YU/v-deo.html
