Taming your Lightroom Keyword list Part 1

- My keyword list is a mess, and really unusable. If you are like most and have just entered keywords randomly, you might have the same problem. Here I’ll talk about keywords and some of their properties, which after we understand them might allow us to organize our mess of a list into something actually useful.

Fantastic info about nested keywords. I think this is one of the most fantastic keyword-courses that is posted on UA-cam. This is just what I needed from biology where one specific bird species are nested into birds that are vertebrates that are animals. But I did not know about this "will export"-function. Thank you, thank you. Maybe you should drop place/region/country as an examlpe, since there is specific metadata-fields for this type of information.
Thanks for this Wayne. Keywords in Lightroom are simple once you know about them but it is very difficult to find out what effect some of those checkboxes might have! When you have tens of thousands of pics, a misunderstanding could lead to a lot of heartache.

Excellent video on setting up a keyword hierarchy. I never learned how to keyword properly on my old computer and my photos are a mess. I have a new computer now so I will take my time as I add my photos to the LR catalog. Thanks very much.

This was very helpful. I wonder how you would recommend organizing other "types" of words beyond places, things and people. Example - mood, or specific picture themes for abstract pics as an example.
I have a top level category in my things labeled mood, and several keywords in that I attach to some images based on the mood. As far as abstract, I do have a single keyword in things called abstract which some images are attached to (don't do a lot of abstract work). You could certainly add more descriptive names to types of abstract under that.
@@cwaynefox Thank you Wayne. I've rewatched your video a few times now. I'm realizing it will take some thought to figure out the proper hierarchy. The "Thing" one is the most complicated one I find as it is so wide.
I agree that taming your keyword list is essential, and what I looked for. I wonder why so many videoes of keywords still put location information in keywords. It is meant to be placed in other places of metadata (city, sublocation, country), and "aspect ratio" you will get from EXIF. But as I said, it is still more than enough keywords left to grow that list way too long. My problem is related to adding systematic hierachy to animals, birds, plants etc. so it was still good help
you can't build a location hierarchy using the location field of the metadata. Also some places strip most of the metadata, but they usually leave keywords alone. Also finding things via keywords for me is easier. So I stick to using keywords.
@@cwaynefox I agree about that LR do not understand location hierarchy. I included in my argument for using these metadata for location that the user remember the hierarchy herself/himself, or watch it as it appear in the metadata, since it will show the overall location/state/region/country for any sublocation I have added.
