I should also note that you can also create "hierarchal keywords" for Lightroom Classic using the same technique, creating a similar text file. Then go to the Metadata menu and "Import Keywords...". However, using those keywords in Lightroom is quite a bit different than how it's done in Photo Mechanic. It's a lot more user-friendly in Photo Mechanic, which is why so many photographers prefer PM over LR for handling metadata.

Great video for explaining structured keywords. I love Photo Mechanic for a lot of things, but as a stock shooter and editor who is constantly dealing with tons of keywords, I have to say setting up and maintaining a hierarchy in Lightroom is WAY easier and more intuitive than this.
That said, if you are dealing with metadata (keywords, etc.) that is already embedded in an image, PM is considerably better than LR since LR works in a catalog space and not directly on image files.

You mentioned at 5:07 that you planned to provide a link for additional vocabulary libraries for Photo Mechanic in the video description. I'm interested in learning more about them and look forward to you doing that. Thanks.

Hi David, yeah that's the link labeled "Controlled Vocabulary" in the video description. It's a third-party, not affiliated with Photo Mechanic, that provides these libraries for several different editing platforms. I don't think their site has been updated since Geocities was a thing, but the library still works!

Well presented topic, seldom tackled as thoroughly and capably on YT, John! Structured approach makes sense and reminds me of classical way to prepare outlines. IMO, text file entry method is error prone to extent one must be disciplined in use of tabs and special characters - an app that channels the user would be welcome. Perhaps an “are you sure” prompt would be a good safeguard before the Load command. Love your analogy - if it walks like a duck .... 😁. Almost 1K subs - should reach that level soon.

I would have greatly loved that "Are you sure" prompt! I appreciate the feedback Paul.

I miss some kind of option for one or two-click adding of keywords, especially with devices such as Stream Deck, where the action is visible on the button itself. Lightroom has a nifty way of doing this that involves holding down a modifier key and pressing 1-9 on the NumPad.

Yeah the interface seems a bit dated, but even without that option, I still find I can work faster than in Lightroom.

Hi John: I have been working all weekend on cleaning up my LR Structured Key-Word list to work better in PM6. QUESTION: If you 'cut' & 'paste' a keyword within the Structured Key-Word List does the change in key-word alignment take place automatically or do I have to re-sync my Catalogue? I am assuming that this is the only way to move a 'child key-word' to a new 'parent key-word' location. Regards, Keith ( Canada) P.S I hope you are having a great Memorial Day weekend, and thanks for your service to the country.

Hi Keith, thanks to our Canadian brothers & sisters too!
If you make changes to the way your keywords are structured - like moving "child" and "parent" keywords around, those changes won't automatically be applied to the photos containing those keywords. I just deleted my copy of PM6 so I'm only working in PM+ now, so I can't recall how to update those in PM6, but there's a "Catalog Sync" option in PM+.

Hi John: Great video! I am new to PM6+ but not key-wording. I have developed an extensive Structured Key-Word Listing in LR but rather than using the Square Brackets [ ], my main categories are denoted with the tilde ~ symbol. When I started using PM6+, I exported my LR Classic Key-Word List and imported it into PM6+. Do you think that because I didn't use [ ] in the main category names this will be problematic? Cheers, Keith P.S. I have also subscribed to your YT channel.

      Hi Keith, thanks!
Yes, the syntax is important here. The structured keywords in PM work a bit different than LR. Your categories with the tilde will show up as regular keywords starting with a tilde. They won't be read by PM as a Category. If you open your Structured Keywords panel in PM, you can right-click on those and select "Set type to Category" to convert them back to a category.

Thanks John for the guidance. I can certainly do this. Seeing as I will be using LrClassic as my RAW Editor and the key-words will show up from PM will there be any significant issues. Also, should I also use PM to key-word so that there is integrity in the process and not confuse LR?

@@keithpinn152 if you just want to use LR for RAW editing, and do _all_ of your metadata in PM ahead of time, that shouldn't be an issue. The problems can arise when you import a photo in LR that has metadata from PM, then you alter the metadata in LR, then try to load it back in PM. There are some compatibility issues. There's a lot of documentation about it in the camerabits forums if you run into any problems.

John, thanks for this tutorial. Too bad I did not know of these 70,000 pictures ago! Next beginner tutorial request: I assume the keywords are stored within the metadata of the jpg file. What are the best programs to use to search my 70,000 pics for the keywords I've added?

    • @PeltierPhoto
      @PeltierPhoto  3 роки тому

Hey Rick, I hope you're well!
Yes, the keywords are stored in the metadata in the file (in most default setups; sometimes you can also create an XMP "sidecar" file that needs to travel with the main file). You'll need a program capable of cataloging and scanning all that metadata. If Adobe Bridge is still around that works, Lightroom Classic also works, and Photo Mechanic Plus. Those are all paid programs. I'm sure there are others, maybe some free programs, but I'm not familiar with them. Maybe someone else will chime in. Cheers!
