Gorgeous and Grueling Dolomites Hike: Tridentina al Pisciadu

- The famous Dolomites via ferrata Tridentina al Pisciadu is known for being one of the most beautiful climbs in the Italian Dolomites region. The hike starts as a challenging and very long via ferrata that climbs from the valley floor all the way up to the Refugio Cavazza al Pisciadu. From there, it's another grueling climb up to the summit of Pisciadu, where the views are a hiker's dream!
#dolomites #hiking #viaferrata
The clouds scored big time for video, ethereal.
Totally! ❤️
Shot straight down with Valley below was awesome. The green contrasting with rock.
Thanks Dan! The whole place is like that -- when you get the right sun and cloud conditions with those kinds of views it's just incredible to the eye!
Hi Elise and Adam, You did exceptional camera work at capturing the stunning natural beauty of the Dolomites. That plus the emotion you displayed while scaling a dangerous mountain during driving wind made for another outstanding video. Just be safe out there and do not take any undue risks on our behalf.
Thanks very much -- so glad the beauty of the Dolomites is coming through on camera, because in person it is absolutely astonishing. We've been spending so much time up on every summit just gazing around in awe at the views! Meanwhile, we're definitely keeping it safe on this trip -- we def don't want to be that tragic honeymoon story! As you can see, even Adam is clipping into the cables on challenging sections just to be extra safe! ❤️
WOW.! 😳As always you Kats totally crushed it.! Amazing footage, and trail Beta.! Thanks 🙏 for sharing.!
Thanks Randy! The Dolomites has just utterly blown our minds, and we're going to be spending a lot of time here in the future!! ❤️
I felt like I was there with you. Beautiful scenery and great camera work.
Thank you, that's really great to hear -- we so want to do justice to this amazing place!! ❤️
Wow wow 🤩
My thoughts exactly
Haha thanks guys -- we were pretty blown away by this climb, both physically and in terms of the incredible views!
Epic video of an epic adventure, love it! Although my knees are screaming at me when I think of the descent
Haha your knees are not wrong! The one nice thing was that once we got off of Pisciadu peak and back down to the refugio, we were able to take the regular hiking trail the rest of the way down which at least had some switchbacks to lessen the pounding a bit. ❤️
It's doable in snow too. Definitely from Moab side. Camp in Basin no wind. Bam.
OMG! What incredible views. You two rock!
Thanks Brian -- the Dolomites just keep on blowing our minds!!! Every time we think we've seen the most spectacular view or done the craziest climb, we find something even wilder. This place is pure magic -- so glad you're enjoying because there's no doubt we'll be coming back again after this trip -- it's basically the high Sierra of Europe!! ❤️
You turned the dial way up for this one Adam and Elise!! Wow! Thanks for another great climb!
Thanks Todd! Yeah this one sort of snuck up on us with the difficulty -- not so much technical as just the sheer length of it, but after fueling up on goulash at the refugio we had no problem making it to the top! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Hey, I forgot to give you a heads up, but if you're there for more than 10 days, you have to start wearing the hats with the feather in them, and Adam has to carry a belt of sausages, like a bandolero. There's also something about lederhosen in sub paragraph c(1), but I'm still working on the translation.
*I don't make the rules. Just passin' on the info🤣
Definitely athletic and pure adventure I would even love to do it.
Yes David!!! It's super challenging and exhilarating yet relatively safe with the ability to clip in -- truly the best of both worlds! ❤️
Gotta love a false summit 🥲 great views and filming you guys 🤩😍
Haha false summits always fool us, Martijntje! In a way that's probably good because it means we're optimistic, but on the downside it also means we're gullible. Still loving the Dolomites, and sad the honeymoon is almost over -- but already looking forward to the next trip back, and including some Swiss adventures in it!! ❤️
I have only recent come across your videos. Wow!
So glad you're enjoying them, Ian! Lots of fun adventures in the archive, and stay tuned because 2024 is likely going to be the biggest year yet! ❤️
Wow..amazing climb and views!! So glad they have the cable though just in case!!
Ya Jason, we felt the same. We could have done most of it without the cable, but with some of those giant drops it felt really good to be able to clip in -- especially when the wind got crazy and we started getting tired toward the top of the via ferrata part! ❤️
Incredibly Mind blowing 🤢.. I can't believe you can climb all the way Whithout any scratch on your knees, legs, arms any place... It's crazy... Oh god I love watching your adventures especially on my big screen... So awesome... 👌😘👍
Thanks Serge! So happy you're seeing this on the big screen -- it's definitely the best way to do justice to the incredible scenery here! We have been scratching up our knees and hands a little bit, but nothing too major, and it's definitely a small price to pay for this level of amazing adventure!! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard sure you have enjoyed to the Max Elise... Have a great day 😊
Yep! Definitely a long one but a super day out with the great mountain hut for lunch!! Great footage of one of my favourite areas in the world!! Getting to know you and your travels!!
Carol those huts are amazing!!! It's just such a pleasant way to relax and recuperate a little bit, especially on this one where there's still the ascent up Pisciadu remaining. Totally see why this is one of your favorite areas in the world. We never thought we'd find a place we love as much as California's high Sierra, but the Dolomites are genuinely right there in terms of epic and beautiful hikes. ❤️
Beautiful shots! My heart rate goes up just watching you two near some of those drops.
OMG Monte some of the drops on this one were making our pulse go up too!! The good thing is we've been doing a lot of climbing practice lately, so we really trust our harnesses to protect us from a catastrophic fall. But with that said, there were definitely still a few places where we got the altitude shivers. But the views are so, so worth a bit of fear -- we went back down the regular hiking route, and it was very nice but nothing like the epic views we got coming up the via ferrata! ❤️
wow what a treat seeing your adventures,,,,,,it looks like crumbling rock not like the solid granite of yosemite,,,,,,,,those r some truly epic views,,,,,,,,,you two know how to live.............all the best ,,stay safe,.......
Yes that's right, it's not as solid as Yosemite -- but thankfully not nearly as crumbly as the San Gabriels. Overall, we felt pretty safe on it and OMG the views!!! Glad you're enjoying these Dolomite adventures -- we've got a couple coming up that are absolute barnburners!!
Great video, spectacular views of the Dolomites!
Thanks Miguel! The Dolomites are just incredible -- so glad to share some of these views with you, not to mention some of these crazy climbing adventures!! ❤️
Amazing hike
Thank you for sharing
Thanks Brian! It's definitely our pleasure to share this incredible place. By the time we're done, we want to convince all of you guys to put the Dolomites on your bucket list. It's Yosemite-level fantastic, and a place that all outdoor lovers should experience at least once! ❤️
Anxiety, but awesomely beautiful
That is the perfect mini-description of this whole trip, Andrea! Each climb we do gets harder and scarier, but also more profoundly beautiful and sublime. Can't wait to show you the one for next week, which is for sure one of the hardest climbs in the world! ❤️
Beautiful climb. Looks like fun stuff, brutal and fun.
Yes Mike, that's well put! We honestly didn't expect it to be so brutal based on the mileage, but that kind of gnarly technical climbing is totally exhausting after even a few miles, and we've definitely been learning that lesson on this trip. Also, of course, it's the funnest climbing ever! ❤️
Absolutely beautiful!!!
Thanks Debbie! Yes this hike was gorgeous pretty much the whole way -- what a treat!! ❤️
Rock fall and lightning ⚡ wind most climbing hazards. You did it climbing gods 🧗
Yes! We wore our helmets on all of these hikes for fear of rock fall, but never encountered any. But the wind got fierce!! ❤️
Beautiful! Another awesome video.
Thanks Martin! The Dolomites is definitely making the filming easy for us -- we could literally close our eyes and point the camera and it would capture something gorgeous!! ❤️
That is a beautiful place!
Yes Harlan! We can hardly even believe it ourselves. We originally had plans to leave the Dolomites earlier, but once we discovered how beautiful and epic the climbs are here we just canceled almost everything else and decided to stay for as long as we can! ❤️
Outstanding climb. Thanks.
It's fairly complex geology, but the Dolomites are basically a Triassic aged limestone reef complex formed in a shallow sea some 250 million years ago. Dolomite is kind of a recrystalized limestone. Very beautiful in both outcrop and under a microscope in thin section.
Spectacular 360 at the top. Just staggeringly beautiful.
So it WAS under the ocean -- thank you! Someone was trying to explain that to us, but our Italian skills are nonexistent and he couldn't quite make it clear in English. It's such cool rock -- and very fun and stable to climb on. And somehow it just creates these crazy gorgeous vertical towers for miles and miles all around. We still can't believe how many Dolomite mountains there are -- and they're all gorgeous!! ❤️
Love the cable deal.
Us too -- it's so nice to be able to climb sections that just wouldn't be possible without the iron, because it allows you to do astonishing routes and really improve climbing and scrambling skills in a much safer way than typical gnarly class 4 or 5 climbs.
That place looks amazing! Good for you guys. I’m surprised you guys clipped in actually.
It is so amazing -- we still can't believe it. So many hikes and climbs, so many spectacular views. Basically, paradise. Yes this hike really didn't require clipping in, but we wanted to be in good practice because we were gearing up for a hike -- which we'll post tomorrow! -- where clipping in really was necessary in certain places. The Dolomites is super cool like that -- you can start with spectacular but less technical hikes and then work your way up to ones that are just insanely hard. Seriously -- paradise! ❤️
I am so happy there were safety lines there for you two to hook onto! What views from the top! It looks like you are on the top of the world! And, you both must be in incredible shape to climb this! I have to say Elise, I was scared watching you walk on some of those rocks! You two sure know how to frighten me! Be careful and have fun! Congrats again on your marriage!
Thanks very much, Joseph! Yes those safety lines were very welcome, especially when that wind started trying to blow us off the mountain! It really did turn out to be a long and challenging climb, but so worth it for those views!! ❤️
Your climbing perspectives just keep getting better! Loved the entire adventure, great work and editing!!
Thanks Eric! Very psyched to hear that -- it's sometimes hard to focus on the filming when we're tired and/or scared, but we've been learning that that's often the best time to get a good shot! Really glad the perspectives are coming through -- the Dolomites are truly mind-blowing in person! ❤️
Props for climbing all of the via ferrata using holds in the rock, and not just clinging to the cable :).
Seriously, I have been up there about 15 years ago, and it was quite crowded. Looked like you had it almost to yourselves...
Thanks Thorsten! Yes we also heard that the via ferrata could be crowded, so we made an effort to avoid that by getting up before dawn and always hiking up from the bottom before any of the gondolas started to run. Doing it that way, we were generally all alone on the way up and also on the summits, but then by the time we headed down we would pass a lot of people coming up. In that sense it was just like America -- earlier is always better when it comes to popular hikes! ❤️
Amazing!
Thanks Casey! The Dolomites is definitely going to be our new part-time home. It is just all beauty, all adventure, all the time here!!! ❤️
Amazing. Great effort. Great views.
Thanks for sharing them.
If there's a switch-back up there, will have to put it on the "Bucket List".
No wonder The Dolomites have such a reputation.
James there definitely is a switchback going up -- it's hellaciously steep but totally doable, and we know because that's what we took down at the end! You will 100 percent love this hike, and it is for sure worthy of bucket list status. Just make sure to check the weather the day before you go, because you wouldn't want to be up on top in a lightning storm and they do come through fairly often in the summer! ❤️
Definitely adding the Dolomites to my must see places. Prob won’t do any climbing but I think saw some gondolas In the background 🤣
Yes Dalia! On a couple of the days we weren't doing hard climbs, we took gondolas up and then just did normal hikes in some of the most beautiful places you've ever seen. You really, truly will not regret doing this trip -- we just recommend that you book more time than you think you'll need, because there is an incredible variety of opportunities here and you will for sure want to do as many as you can. There's just nowhere else like it! ❤️
Well, you were correct about topping the last snack spot! The footage came out really great, but in my limited experience, the camera can never replace the actual experience and human eye of being there in person. Wow, just wow! Y’all are becoming hiking connoisseurs now, let the snobbery begin!
Haha thanks Aamon, and you are so right. We were happy with the footage, but being there in person was utterly mind-blowing. The reason is that these peaks are so vertical that the 360 from the top is a literal 360. You have incredible views in every direction, and it's almost too much for the mind to process at one time. The only other places we've had something like that are on Kilimanjaro and a few peaks in the Sierra, like Cloudripper (notice the snobby peak name-dropping, btw 🤣).
That was crazy, beautiful. I told my husband I would love to do that. Thank you for sharing, you guys are the cutest couple. Have a wonderful day!!!!
Thanks so much, Cynthia! We hope you guys will do it -- via ferrata is such a great way to get into class 4 climbing with relative safety, and it'll open up a whole new world of adventure for you! ❤️
Glad you are enjoying the Dolomites, great footage with fine scenery. So there are going on about the exposure as you clipped in and moved up. Then sitting eating a snack, not clipped in Lol. Crack on on you two and look well to each step.
Haha yes Iain you are right -- we definitely go back and forth between protection and non-protection when it comes to clipping in! But interestingly, we noticed that most of the experienced climbers there did the same thing. A lot of times they wouldn't even clip in at all unless it was a challenging section where there was a risk they might fall. We clipped in a bit more than that since we were new to the terrain and wanted to be extra safe, but definitely did some of the climbing unclipped and of course Adam's snack spots are always unclipped. But don't worry, we're always very careful and mindful whenever we get close to the edge, whether or not we have a harness!
Hi Guys, we were in the Dolomites around the same time as you. We hired a guide to take our 19 year old son up the Tridentina (I've done it before, twice😊) he described it as 'incredible'. Love your videos!
Wow Martin what a fantastic gift to your son! Very good choice of route as well -- challenging and spectacularly beautiful but not horribly scary for his first one. It sounds like you guys come to the Dolomites pretty often since you've already done Tridentina twice. Now that we understand all the Dolomites has to offer, we'll definitely be coming back regularly as well! ❤️
It was a while ago, but it was great to go back. I can recommend the hike up the Fania Ridge from the Santa croce lift from Badia. Very exposed with a short but steep via ferrata to Santa Dieci. Sassongher is also a great mountain day☺
@@martinheaton5057 Thanks very much -- we will put them on the list for the next trip!
The iron way cometh. The via feratt.great acent.
.
Haha once you go iron you never go back!!
Absolutely fantastic !!!! 😀
Thanks Petr! We love it here so much -- we honestly never want to leave!! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Yes, the Dolomites are fantastic. I would also like to be there all the time 😀
WOW! Simply stunning! Thanks for taking us along once again!
Glad you liked it Jeff, and just wait -- later today we're going to post one of the world's hardest via ferrata hikes, which was SO freaking cool to do! ❤
Such a beautiful place, and a great hike to the top with such great views, the camera work us just fantastic, thank you so much for sharing your great adventures , Larry
Thanks Larry! It's really encouraging that you guys are liking the camerawork, because we were honestly worried that we weren't going to be able to capture the sublime beauty of this place. To the eye it is just astonishing, but there's always a concern the camera won't quite convey it -- so glad that it's coming through!! ❤️
You guys did it again - impressive and NO PEOPLE. Wow. Must have been pretty hard as I see Adam's water bottles are getting close to empty near the top (and he had his typical lunch perch 🙂). You guys cruised it, looked like your climbing is getting better all the time. Thanks for sharing all of the wonderful scenery, most amazing. You guys are the best!!
Thanks much, Paul! Yes there were no other people climbing the Tridentina route when we were on it -- at least none that we saw. We did see a few people who had come up the normal hiking route when we reached the refugio and started the climb up Pisciadu from there, but by the time we got to the summit we were all alone again. As usual, the combo of going early and going hard totally paid off!! ❤️
Really loving these recent vids so much guys !!! so unique.
also that bridge was terrifying oh my !!
Carl we're so happy you're into these! We feel exactly the same way. We know they're not as well known as Yosemite or Zion so might not get a ton of views on YT, but we don't care. We just want to show you guys awesome stuff that we think you'll enjoy watching and even more enjoy climbing one day, and the Dolomites are the truth when it comes to that!! ❤️
Love it! You both are having a great honeymoon, and all your viewers are so happy for you!! Always like the music too, but sounded like some new stuff (or maybe I don't pay enough attention) near the end on the way down. Very cool as well!
Good ear, Dan! That is definitely a new song, and we don't even have a name for it yet. Glad you like it! Meanwhile, the honeymoon adventures are still continuing and we're having the time of our lives. Seriously cannot wait to show you the next one -- it is utterly bonkers! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard - Can't wait!! I have hiked in numerous places in Europe but not the Dolomites, so loving your adventures!
Hello my friends! 🤗 Very exciting and with a lot of adrenaline to climb the viaferrata. Very cool! Congratulations! Very good your movie. 👍 Greetings from România 🇷🇴
Thanks very much! We're having such a great time in Europe, and are amazed by how many epic via ferrata there are over here. We will definitely come back again soon -- probably even next summer! -- and hopefully will eventually make it further east toward Romania!! ❤️
Glamorous landscape scenery, and really touching shots. Stunning!!!
Thanks very much! We've been totally blown away by the scenery here, and thankfully the always seem to put the via ferratas in the most gorgeous places! The the regulare hiking trails weave in and out (though they're still beautiful in many spots), but the ferratas are just on these exposed cliff faces where everything is beautiful all the time!
I've done 900 miles so far of the PCT. Climbed Whitney, Forester Pass...living basically at 11,000 feet...part of nature now lol....and still can't do the crazy things y'all do. I love it!! Keep rocking. Ohhhhh and tell some of your subscribers to come watch me on the PCT too hahaha 😂. Keep being you...you two!!
OMG that is amazing -- almost 1000 miles in already!!!! Really wonderful. And we agree -- anyone reading this should def check out your PCT journey -- that route is one of the most epic and impressive in all of endurance hiking! ❤️
Thank you so much for that. It is tough for sure...but what y'all do is so amazing. You both are just amazing people. Keep it up!!
You both are in such great shape to be able to climb such technical up to the summit!
Thanks very much -- we appreciate you calling out the difficulties of a long technical climb! When we looked at the mileage for this hike it didn't seem bad at all, but it was an exhausting full-body workout by the time we were done. This trip is really teaching us a lot about the physical challenges of more technical climbing. It's a whole different level of fitness. And wait 'til you see the one we're editing now -- it was a freaking killer! ❤️
Another great video! I
So glad you got to see this one! That summit still holds a special place in our hearts :)
Mountains and valleys to look absolutely gorgeous. Kind of looks like a green screen😊
Haha that's definitely what it's like in person -- from the very first hike, it's been hard to believe what we're seeing. We keep checking in with each other, like, "It really is that beautiful, right? It's not just that I'm in a good mood or something?" And every time the other person says, "No, it really is that beautiful." We're getting serious about making this honeymoon into an annual trip, because there are hundreds of trails to explore here and from what we've seen so far they are all magnificent! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard yes please making it a annual thing those are some of the beautiful mountains I seen
Soooo breathtaking there. I know you are enjoying every minute as if it was your last on this planet. So very happy for you both to be experiencing such beauty and fun challenges, absolutely amazing! Picked the perfect spot on the planet for sure! Great job🏜
Thanks Mary -- you express it really perfectly about enjoying every minute as if it's the last. We've been taking these 5 weeks of honeymoon to fully appreciate and luxuriate in every moment, and want to make sure that we bring that mentality back to LA with us even when we have to start work again! ❤️
Breathtaking! I would not want to ever leave that place. I am glad you made it back safe. Looks like a scary climb up and down. You make it look effortless.
Thank you, and we're feeling exactly the same way -- we really don't want to leave. We actually canceled some other parts of our trip so we could stay here, because it's as close to hiking heaven as we've found in our lives. That's saying something, because you know how much we love the Sierra, but the Dolomites might be even better because it's equally gorgeous and there's just so much more of it! Hopefully our future will involve a lot of back and forth between here and the Sierra, with some added months in between for Alpine climbing some truly giant mountains -- that's the dream, anyway!
Wow. Spectacular. Your cameras did a great job of picking up the details in foreground and in backgrounds. Definite change in the surrounding scenery as you ascended. How do the folks that run the lodge/restaurant come and go?
Thanks Christine, and we were wondering that same thing! Pretty sure they just hike up and down. There are no roads whatsoever to most of these places. Some of them have a gondola that goes up to them, or at least part way up, but others just have to be hiked. That means someone has to pack in all that food as well -- but they def charge more for it, so I guess it works out. And getting a bowl of hot goulash at the top of a tough climb is worth just about any price! ❤️
I am glad you did that and showed the video from the top as it looks absolutely spectacular but how will you manage boring America after that crazy view - you may have to go to Alaska next
Haha we've been to Alaska once Rick and loved it!! Ran into a Grizzly in the middle of a long hike that scared the pants off of us though. Denali is most definitely on our bucket list, and a lot of other hikes up there too!! ❤️
The Dolomites are such a special place. You guys should head over to Tre Cime Di Lavaredo
Yes they are amazing! Tre Cime was definitely on our list, but we didn't get to it because our goal was (as you'll see next week) to work up to some of the world's hardest via ferratas. But not to worry, we will be going back repeatedly, and have figured out a route for Tre Cime that will not only show its beauty but will also have plenty of zesty and difficult climbing!! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard the 360 views at Tre Cime are truly stunning. Cadini
Di Misurina will blow your mind
Wow so beautiful it reminds me of a greener Yosemite . Amazing climb thank you for taking us to the top!! 💪
Yes Brian we've been saying the same thing -- it's like Yosemite meets the Tetons because of how crazy jagged and vertical a lot of these mountains are. For those who love the sublime beauty of the Sierra but also the gorgeous Sound of Music greenery of the Alps, the Dolomites are an ideal hiking location. We could literally hike here for years and never do the same router twice!! ❤️
Thank you guys
for showing, what amazing stuff we have in Europe. Seems, I have to do some homework!
Yes Lothar! We have been stunned by how beautiful and impressive the Dolomites are. You will absolutely love the hikes here -- and just wait until you see the one we have coming up next week! ❤️
You make it look so easy, but I suspect it's anything but. Vertical climb? And even wildflowers for Adam--yay! Elise, the wind freaked me out too, and I wasn't even there. One of my favorite videos! Love you
:Pops! Can't wait to take you to Ortisei. But don't worry - we will allow a cable car or two for you and mama. The wind was rough but I think you would have forgotten all about it if I had a beer waiting for you at the rifugio ;)
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Absolutely beautiful spot--loved it!
Spectacular scenery, surreal landscapes, incredible valley, another great climb, excellent capture on video you guys !!
Thanks so much! We're really thrilled that the epic nature of this place is coming through on camera -- in person it practically burns the eyeballs with its beauty! ❤️
Wow, that was absolutely amazing! So so beautiful! Y'all make me feel like I'm there with you 😆 Elise, you made my heart skip a beat at 10:30 right at the top... that lil slip 😱 Thank you so much for the adventures from my own home ❤️ ⛰️ and Elise, your voice puts my mind at ease, it's so lulling, as I suffer from anxiety. Thanks for making watching these crazy (but amazing) climbs bearable 🥰🌱
So glad you liked it! Yes we've definitely had a few slips on this slick rock, but the good thing is that we're clipped in for all the dicey parts so we wouldn't fall more than about 10 feet or so before the cable caught us. Not that I'd want to fall 10 feet, but it's a lot better than all the way to the bottom! Meanwhile, really happy you're enjoying the music -- I've got anxiety too so I definitely know where you're coming from with comforting music. We've got a couple of other down-tempo songs we're working on that hopefully you'll like. Maybe we'll get them in an episode in a week or two! ❤️ --E
Breathtaking views and a challenging climb. So happy to see you guys back safe and once again thank you for an amazing video.
Thanks Samridhi! This is truly the best honeymoon ever -- the Dolomites are just an amazing and magical place to adventure, and we never want to leave! Probably everyone feels like that on their honeymoon, but we're definitely both overwhelmed with the beauty of this place! ❤️
The Dolomites are on my bucket list for sure! Loved the video you guys--thanks for sharing! 😍
Yes Laura! The Dolomites might have the best hiking and climbing in the whole world in terms of variety and incredible views -- you absolutely must go!!! Feel free to reach out before -- we've been here for weeks, and have lots of great info about best places to stay, best times to hike, etc. ❤️
Again, another "WOW!" Spectacular scenery. Your videos just keep getting better and better!!! I think the clouds with the various shadows really added to the beauty of the jagged cliffs. And it looked like you guys had the whole mountain range to yourselves . . . except for that big black bird that tried to get in that shot from the top! Can't wait to see what's next from Hikers Heaven! :D
Haha ya Tom those birds were fully photobombing us! We had the whole via ferrata ascent completely to ourselves, which was absolutely awesome. We stopped for breakfast at that refugio that adjoined to the main hiking trail, and after that we passed a couple people on the trail going up, but were early enough that it was negligible. And then we had the summit of Pisciadu all to ourselves, which was lovely. The only crowds we encountered the whole day were when we took the main hiking trail down the mountain from after the refugio, but by then we were bone tired and done filming so we barely even noticed! ❤️
What a fantastic adventure and what incredible views, bravo!!!
Thanks so much! We have been truly astonished by this place, so much so that we have vowed to come back repeatedly until we complete all the great climbs here -- it will probably take years because there are hundreds of epic trails, but so much the better!! ❤️
Wow you guys! I would take the hiker trail for sure 😝 how long did that take to get up? And i love that about hiking in Europe! A good meal and beer at the top 👏🏻
Haha no way we would def make you take the high road with us! It's pretty darn amazing how they have all these incredible refugios in high places -- it's just such a fantastic outdoor-oriented culture. We're def gonna need to live over here part time!! ❤️
thank you guys for this amazing video. great climb keep it up
Very glad you liked it! We're having the absolute time of our lives here in the Dolomites, and can't wait to show you the next one which we're editing now -- it's one of the hardest climbs in the world for sure, and the footage looks like it turned out great. Hopefully will have it edited and up by next Thursday! ❤️
Amazing views, and well done for getting to the top, very steep climbing in places, you guys go to the most incredible places, love watching your videos
So glad to hear that, Peter, and appreciate the props on getting to the summit. It was funny, because from the distance in the beta we thought it would be fairly easy but we didn't factor in the fact that every mile climbing straight up and down is like 10 miles on flatter terrain. We've definitely been learning on this trip that long rock climbs are really, really hard -- but also SO freaking worth it!! ❤️
Hello Adam and Elise!! Always awesome video work that you two do!! And...in an incredible area!
Ha...back in 99 my son was 3 and daughter was about 6 months old. I returned to Germany after 6 or 7 months deployment during the initial conflict in Kosavo.
I returned home to Germany in the summer. To give my wife a break, I took my son on a camping trip. The plan was to go to the Austrian and Italian mountains. We made it to the Austrian alps for our first night in camp. While driving, I was called by some friends that said they were going to Aviano Italy to the air force base to restock their medical supplies. So, my son and I diverted to met them and head to Venice . Ha...the rest of the trip was hotel camping in Venice. My wife was pissed when I got back home as she has never been to Venice.
Safe travels!!
Haha that's a classic story, Alan! Did you love Venice? It's Adam's favorite city in the whole world (for obvious reasons -- no motor vehicles so it's made for hikers and runners) and we have several days planned there to relax and eat and drink cappuccinos at the very end of the honeymoon! ❤️
Hey guys, I've watched nearly all your vids and this is your best one yet. Top notch! Amazing views and you captured it very professionally. Great music too- you're so talented. That view across the suspension bridge made my hands sweat haha. You deserve 100 bazillian subscribers.
Thank you so much! That's great to hear, because it's really important to us to do justice to this incredible place. It's one of the most beautiful locations we've ever been and has the best hiking and climbing anywhere, so we definitely want to represent it well to you guys! ❤️
I agree with u as a beautiful area 👍👍👍👍😎😎
OMG yes John -- for us it's right up there with the Sierra in terms of having the most amazing views in the world, from every angle. Such a fun place to adventure and film!! ❤️
Wow, once in a lifetime experience there, Great job guys! Just stunning and so well shot and edited as well! So many amazing places this planet has to offer, and that's one of the best! Some day soon I hope to crank a few of these big daddies. Efficient movement in vertical terrain is my favorite! and been practicing quite a bit these day, been rainy here, tougher to schedule climbs, but OMG the flowers! One of the best years Ive ever seen!
Karl you would absolutely go nuts for some of these climbs, and they would look crazy cool from a drone too, because a lot of times we're just basically spiders on the wall of some epic face! Even the easier stuff is great because while it's not technically challenging, it's so darn beautiful that it keeps you interested and engaged in the filming even when the climbing is pretty easy. Meanwhile, looking forward to getting back in a couple weeks and catching up on what you've been doing -- sure it's been amazing!! ❤️
Unreal! If there's an Italian department of tourism they should be paying you!
Haha thanks AJ! We're just so happy to be showing you guys this amazing place. The more we discover, the more astonished we are by it and we will definitely be coming back for more. There are so many incredible mountains and valleys -- the opportunities for adventure seem almost endless! ❤️
Hey I love these Dolomite videos, that area is so beautiful and really different from our California mountains. Which reminds me, I have a sufferfest idea for you!
I just did a backpack trip to the Sierras northwest of Mammoth, in the Ansel Adams wilderness near Mt. Ritter. We camped at Ediza Lake and then at 1000 Island Lake. Scenery is mind blowing. So I have been studying maps and aerials and have an idea for a long day running-hiking-climbing adventure. From Agnew Meadows parking area, trail run out to Ediza Lake (7 miles) then continue up the drainage (use trails) heading toward Mt. Ritter. Hike cross country up and over massive ridge between Ediza and Garnet Lake, below the majestic forms of Mt. Ritter and Banner Peak. Drop down to 1000 Island Lake and pick up a use trail on its north side, which leads to the PCT at the East end of the lake. Run the PCT back to the parking lot (about 7.6 miles). I would guess the cross country and use trail hiking/running between the lakes is about 5 - 6 miles for a total of 20-ish miles at least.
Extra bonus points: before dropping down to 1000 Island Lake, climb Banner Peak (class 2). Extra extra bonus points: Climb Mt. Ritter (class 3) instead of, or in addition to, Banner Peak. That would be a very long day indeed but so epic! I am not in shape for that level of running/hiking in a day, but maybe next year!
Love your new music to!
David this is a fantastic route plan -- thank you!! We have a list of adventures we'd like to do in the future, and are just going to copy and paste this directly into the list! Wow, what a great backpacking trip that must have been!! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard It was terrific, and I can't overstate the beauty of that area. Words cannot describe and photos are just a shadow of the experience. That area is so popular, I have to believe that route has been done before, but most people just head up to the peaks and down, I think. I did not see any trail runners on the trip. Cheers!
I'm sorry you went all that way and had nothing to see!
Seriously, though...great video! This place looks amazing, and I would love to hike there myself. The videos you two make are some big inspiration!
Haha thanks Thomas. We really couldn't recommend the Dolomites more highly -- it is just exquisite hiking and climbing, incredible trail running, and also extremely romantic being surrounded by all that beauty. You guys would have a truly great vacation there!
Great video!
So glad you enjoyed it! We're so stoked to be sharing the Dolomites with you guys -- every hike we do here is more astonishing than the last. ❤️
What a beautiful hike! 😊 Thank you guys for taking us along. Adam always finds the best snack spots, did he find pop tarts in Europe or was that some delicious bread he was snacking on? Lol!
So glad you guys didn’t run in to crazy wind like normal at the summit 😅 Can’t wait to see what adventure is next!
Christine that is a crucial question! He did not find any pop tarts in Italy, but did find some delicious little waffle snacks that he's totally delighted with! Also, they have sterilized milk here (he can never bring milk on US hikes or it would spoil) so he's having waffles and milk or bread and milk on every peak and loving it!! 🤣 Meanwhile, you are going to love the next adventure -- it is truly epic.
@@LiveHardxLoveHard hahahaha I love this!! 😂 Can’t wait to tune in to the next one 🤗
So, the Refugio sounds like a restaurant almost at the top, where you guys went the via Ferrata way and connects to normal hikers, correct? (Not that you guys are abnormal lol). Wha was the elevation in feel from bottom to top, do you remember? What an epic epic adventure guys, looks like you were climbing in the backdrop of where Sound of Music was filmed!
Yes that's exactly right about the refugios. A lot of these mountains have different routes leading up, and if they have a relatively do-able hiking trail then often there will be a place at a saddle or even near the summit that serves surprisingly delicious food in the summers and also has a dormitory where hikers can reserve a bed to spend the night before either continuing on up or climbing down the next day. So on a few of these via ferrata we've been able to climb up an impossibly steep face and then treat ourselves to soup and cappucinos! Also, in those cases we can then take the hiking trail back down from the refugio rather than having to down climb the whole sketchy via ferrata. It's such a great system, but of course you need a culture where enough people want to do hard hikes (since even the regular hiking trails are hard and steep) to make it work economically. The elevation gain was probably only around 3000 feet or so up to Pisciadu, but it's such hard climbing that feels like a lot more! ❤️
Great video!
My gf and I are about to hike the Narrows in Zion. After watching your video and doing a bit of research, I believe you all typically shoot on a GoPro Hero. Is this true? If so, are you all using an external microphone system? Your audio is so clear, and I've seen a lot of film shot on a GoPro with terrible audio.
Appreciate any insight :)
Thanks Cory! Yes we shoot with a GoPro 10 and an iPhone. We designed our own little wind muffler for the GoPro mic -- if you're interested, we talked about it in a video we did a few months ago on how to shoot action footage -- but ironically we lost it before this trip so unfortunately the audio will be a little more messed up with wind noise for all the Europe videos. However, once we're back in the states we'll build another muffler and be back to solid audio! ❤️
Awesome! Slowly catching up on your videos and sorry I didn't start sooner. I know you've done some hiking in the Sierra; how do the Dolomites compare to the Sierra? Views? Difficulty? (Looks much more difficult than even the off trail routes I've done in the Sierra, but more tame at the same time with the cables and refugio.)
That's a perfect way to describe it, Michael. It is more difficult in terms of the terrain you encounter on official trails, but the wonderful via ferrata system and the many refugios make it feel very civilized as well. It's really a perfect set-up for vacation (or honeymoon!) hiking, where you want to go hard but also want to maximize your pleasure. However, you won't feel nearly as much "out in the wild" as you do on long and difficult Sierra hikes. ❤️
I see these and feel so happy for you guys that you are safe..Just curious what kind of shoes do you wear for climbing
That's a good and important question. For this kind of climbing, we wear approach shoes because they have a really nice grip on the rock but are still fairly comfortable to hike in (unlike actual climbing shoes). The approach shoes we wear are La Sportivas -- there should be a link to them on our gear page.
Gorgeous views, and your filming captures the beauty as much as it is possible on camera! But I am wondering about the downclimbs in the potentially nasty weather. While those grey and darkish clouds add quite a bit of contrast and vividness to your footage, but the reality of being there could be quite troublesome. So, what if you got caught in rain while going down on those rocks? Even the hiking portion would get extremely dangerous, so how would you do the via ferrata part in those conditions? Is it possible at all to do that once it gets wet? Or is there an alternative path down?
This is a great question, and we learned the answer this summer doing Daubenhorn. There were several very wet, steep sections on Daubenhorn, and although it was much more challenging with slippery shoes our hands were still able to hold the cable just fine. So basically, you would grip the cable the whole way up and really try to find good footholds rather than smearing against the rock face, because smearing doesn't work well at all with wet feet. It's not ideal, but it could be done. Honestly, I'd probably rather climb up holding a cable in wet conditions than hike down some of the really steep hiking parts, which as you say would be really dangerous. Our basic rule on via ferratas is just to not go if there is rain forecast. We've had to skip out on a couple of climbs we really wanted to do for that reason. ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard thanks, good to know!
You have to do Gold Basin Moab. Hey it has Dead Horse, Gemini Arch, Arches, Canyonlands, cathedral valley. The camping from La Sal side is great but bowl/basin is from other side, park at 10k + sweet.
Putting it on the list!
What can you say after that guys? Speechless! Thanks for sharing honeymooners. ❤️
Thanks Larry! We're truly having the most incredible honeymoon. The Dolomites just has everything we've ever wanted in an adventure location, and we're only just scratching the surface. This is definitely a place we'll be returning to again and again as long as we're able to!! ❤️
I’m so happy for you! I won’t be surprised if we find out your moving there some day. ❤️
@@larrywheeler9797 That's a good read on it -- the long term goal is to live a life of permanent travel and adventure, and the Dolomites will for sure figure prominently because there's just so much adventure to be had there!
Nice plan!!!
Elise how do you keep your knees from getting all scraped up when climbing? Awesome video.
Thanks Roger -- I have to be honest on this one and tell you that my knees do get pretty scraped up sometimes. In fact, I think I was bleeding by the end of this one 🙈 But on the upside, a small amount of knee skin is a fair sacrifice to the trail gods for giving us such an epic adventure!! ❤️ --E
Is there a good jump off point for a wing suit 🤔 or Paragliding... definitely a bucket list idea for me too.
Heck yes there is, Jason! We honestly don't know too much about wing suits and how much vertical clearance they require, but Adam has a dream of paragliding off peaks like this, and with the right wind conditions pretty much every single peak we went to would be doable. In fact, on a couple of the days we weren't doing hard climbs we took gondolas to fun places and ran into some paragliding instructors -- nicest guys in the world, and were always happy to talk to us. This place would definitely be paragliding heaven! ❤️
did it on 22 july 2022! wonderful
Congrats, Marco!!! Hope you had the perfect weather to capture those incredible views!! ❤

@@marcojsf4557 We totally agree with you -- it was very long, but so beautiful that it was worth the effort! Mesules looks great, and we also just did Tomaselli -- it was so hard! Will post the video for that in two or three days. ❤
you guys have gone from trail runners to all out rock climbers. nice job.
Haha that's definitely true at least for this trip -- the Dolomite trails are CRAZY steep and even the flatter parts often have crazy drop-offs that would be too sketchy to run. And we're also working hard in the climbing gym to improve our trad climbing for some crazy climbs and traverses we wanna do in the Sierra. But with that said, someone just recommended us an ultra 100 mile trail running race with like 30,000 feet of climbing and Adam said he might actually want to train for it over winter, so you never know! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Adam is a machine, and so are you. Love the content. Keep it coming :)
@@agonzalez8924 Will do -- can't wait to show you the next one it is totally nuts!!
Great shots, great views, great country, and a great place for a honeymoon. But I have to ask: where did you find out about these climbs? Is there a website(s) or guidebook you can recommend? Thanks!
Thanks Bob! We first learned about the Dolomites from people who know how much we love the Sierra strenuously recommending them to us (and you know we love to take recommendations!), and then from there we started doing research and found an Italian site (which also has an English translation) called ferrate365.it. It is a fantastic site for Italian via ferrata, and gave us all the beta we needed to get to the hikes and know what to expect. There are other sites too, but we loved that one the most and referred to it for virtually every hike we did.
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Awesome, thanks for the tip about that website!
05:16 Adam calms down the wind. Great that you guys go through it, amazing video. It will be good if you guys gave us time and elevation stamps through video.
For example we are three hours into the climb and we are at 7000 feet elevation. This will give us a feel the pace of the hike.
Haha yes! And totally agree with you about going through challenges like the wind on this one. They can be a pain in the butt at the time, but afterwards we're always glad because they make the experience more epic. Well, except for that wind at the top of Shasta --we'll never be thankful for that freaking hurricane! But usually, the difficulties turn out to be a good thing in the end. ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard nice way to handle it with good attitude :)
Fantastic! How quickly it went from fun and easy to terrifying :).
What’s the deal with the El Refugio(?). Is it there just for hikers? Is there anyway to get there other than hiking or via ferata? Would love to see one of those in the middle of the Sierra during my next hike. :)
OMG we've been saying that this whole trip! It's basically like if there was a lovely little restaurant at the top of Whitney saddle, or Old Army Pass when you're climbing Langley. Yes it's there just only for hikers. There is no road or way to drive to these places. Some of them have gondolas that go part way up to them, but others they just have to cart the food up there by hand! But it's sustainable because there's such a big hiking culture here. Not that many people do the really hard via ferratas, but there's almost always another route up, and even when it's thousands of feet of steep climbing you'll see whole families with kids out on these trails. It's a pretty awesome and impressive outdoors culture, and when we leave at first light we're still able to be the only ones out there on the way up! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard that is AMAZING! Totally unique to that culture. Thanks for the detailed info. BTW - headed to Lake Sabrina next weekend and looking to mirror most of your 10 lake loop 😍. Adding in the Chocolate Lakes loop out of South Lake the following day. Beauty overload!
@@tombellanca That's fantastic, Tom! Can't wait to hear how you like all the lakes, and which ones you opt to swim in. And the Chocolate Lakes are great too -- pretty sure we passed by those when we did Cloudripper. What a perfect weekend you have planned!!
I've got to try that, way too much exposure without a clip in but with the clip.... a sense of security..? Great video.
Yes clipping in made us feel much safer over the really gigantic drops. There are a lot of support points in the super steep places, so as long as you're clipped in properly the furthest you would fall would be about 10-15 feet, which of course wouldn't be fun and would for sure scrape you up, but almost certainly wouldn't be fatal. So basically, we got to do incredible class 4 climbs with only class 3 risk -- that's a great bargain! ❤️
Guys, I loved you channel,, just subscribed it. Although I'm from Europe, I can really relate to a lot of the stuff you are doing to try to keep your hiking accessible, also to the training and life stile. One thing I noticed here though is that your home made ferrata kit does not seem to have any shock absorber included, which is a BIG NO-NO ! Falling into a ferrate kit with no shock absorber can be life threatening. Even if the kit holds (a big if, as a construction kit is not designed to hold impacts after sliding down some meters and accelerating on the way down), the amount of shock your body has to absorb may lead to serious injury. A shock absorber can be one of 2 types : an end piece sawn together and designed to break under major shock and then you would need to replace it or a mechanical type with limited slip under major shocks, reusable afterwards. If you want to keep things low on cost you might want to investigate a Kong Kisa shock absorber (i am not affiliated with them in any way, is just what I have found by searching myself, could be other types out there) and how to make a DIY kit with some climbing cord. The resulting kit is still cheap but safer, although a bit heavier. On the plus side, this system made with cord could keep the two ends closer together, which is a plus when clipping/unclipping.
Thanks Radu -- not sure if you noticed or could tell from the video but the shock absorption is built into the tethers. They are industrial grade shock absorbing tethers made for high-rise construction workers, and should give us great protection in the event we ever have a fall on a via ferrata!
Stunning scenery. How is the rock to climb on compared to what you're used to? Do you rent the clip attachments? (I'm assuming you brought your own hardnesses.
The rock was gorgeous, Ellen. A bit slicker than granite, but generally very reliable and not too crumbly. We actually built our own shock-absorbing tethers out of a high-rise construction safety system that Adam bought and re-purposed for via ferrata. It worked great, and only cost us about 1/3 what it would have cost to buy a specific via ferrata system! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Thanks for the info. There are actually is Via Ferrata in the US, but most of them are guided. There is a site at Squaw and another at Mammoth. Tempting to go try them.
@@ellenclary Yes! We've already been talking about how we're sure to go through an intense via ferrata withdrawal after the honeymoon, so are planning to head up to Mammoth later this summer to try out the ones up there. Please give us the beta on the best ones if you get up there first! Otherwise, we'll definitely fill you in on how they are in a couple of months.
@@LiveHardxLoveHard These are nothing compared to what you've been on. Just really big rock faces with routes set up on them.
Not one bead of perspiration.Amazing conditioning.
Thanks much, John! That lack of sweat may have more to do with the cold and wind up there, but we'll take it! We have for sure been getting in pretty good hiking shape with some kind of climb nearly every day this month. ❤️
WOW this looks incredible! Equal parts Yosemite, Zion, and maybe even a little Death Valley. Would you guys have dared to do this as a free climb or is it just too dangerous? The last climb must've been tough if Adam called it "damnable" 😂
Also, is this the honeymoon or still part of the wedding?? Are you guys going to chill on the beach in Hawaii like NORMAL people at some point??
Haha these are great questions! We talked about whether we would have free climbed this one, and agreed that there were a few places that would have been too sketchy for us without the cable. Adam would have happily have done it with just the cable though and no harness or clips, but with that said it was still nice to be able to clip in -- especially when that wind tried to blow us off the mountain! As for the honeymoon, we're still on it and still traveling around the Dolomites -- but do have a week in Venice at the end just for chilling and eating and drinking wine (though we might run a marathon through the city at some point!). ❤️
OMG filming a run through Venice like you guys did in San Francisco last Thanksgiving would be epic!!
@@LosZetasUno That's def the plan!!

I wish my girlfriend would be as adventurous as You Elise and I had a stamina like You Adam!
Anyway I wonder for finding the proper grips while climbing, how tall are You?
Great honeymoon!
Thanks so much! Yes it has truly been the honeymoon of our dreams. We're both blessed with long reach -- Elise is 5'9'', and Adam is 6'6'', which really helps him reach challenging holds with both his arms and his legs!
are the down hiking routes usually well marked or are you navigating maps? thanks!
We do find GPX tracks to download prior to all of our climbs, however one thing we love about hiking in many places in Italy and other parts of Europe is that they tend to be pretty good with signage, at least relative to the U.S. But the maps are always nice to have as a backup!
8:49 these cables are actually not meant to clip in, but to hold onto in harsh conditions.
Ya we were holding on for dear life a few times! It's a very nice sense of comfort to clip in too though, especially over the big drops. ❤️
