  • A home audio recording of the now missing adaptation of J. Meade Falkner's 'The Lost Stradivarius', the very first episode of the 1960s supernatural anthology series 'Mystery and Imagination' produced by Jonathan Alwyn for ABC.
This opening episode stars Jeremy Brett and introduces the character of Richard Beckett, played by David Buck, who hosted and frequently played a major role in the early episodes of the series.
I have no information on who made these tape recordings or how they were recovered, they were simply passed on to me some years ago by a fellow ghost story enthusiast. The sound quality, as supplied to me, is far from perfect, and there is background noise at times, but as a record of a sadly lost episode from a well regarded and well remembered series, I thought it worth sharing anyway. For those interested in learning more about the series, the surviving episodes, plus a brief clip from the lost adaptation of 'Casting the Runes', have been released on DVD by Network, with an accompanying booklet detailing the background to the series and a full episode guide.
    Originally broadcast 29 January 1966.
    Adapted by Owen Holder
    Directed by Bill Bain
Starring David Buck, Jeremy Brett, Patricia Garwood, Joyce Heron, Edward Brayshaw, Angela Morant, Faye Sharpe, Peter Ashmore, Jack Howlett, Franco Derosa.
