Psssh and you thought Bhutan was the only sovereign state flag with a dragon on it. Wow! Thanks to all you guys that bought GN T-shirts! So far we only have men's and women's sizes however school is coming just around the corner so I will try to come up with new designs for kids. They should be launched by Saturday or Sunday, Stay tuned !
Can you make a video about the sovereign military order of St. John of Jerusalem Rhodes and Malta. That would be a appreciating for a filler week video ty😉
Welcome to homeownership and congratulations on your first show from your new home! Also, love the mailbag portion of the show, kinda feels like it brings the world together in a way, Any way great channel, keep up the wonderful work!
As a fellow Arab, I've noticed that there is a lot of Arabic in Maltese, but not 70%, more like 30-40%. You probably understand it better as you might be from the Maghreb region.
Correction Reqd The Eight pointed white cross is not Maltese at all. It is the flag of the Knights Hospitalar. Specifically that of the Knights when they carried out their Monastic duties looking after the sick (everyone, including the enemy). The Red and white flag with the plain white cross was the knights “Battle Flag” when under arms. The Knights of ST John have been using the eight pointed black flag (and its Red ensign at various times) ever since they first adopted it from their main benefactors, “The Merchants of Amalfi” a city state of Italy, back during the Crusades. The Knights of ST John ended up in Malta after first getting kicked out of Jerusalem and then Rhodes, before finally settling in Malta, Where (after a very long time) Napoleon “insisted”! that they leave, which they did. The most holy order of ST John has since returned (sort off) to Malta and is in itself, a small micro nation (of one building I believe). The “Allied” order of The Most Venerable order of ST John of Jerusalem (aka St JOHN Ambulance), is headquartered in Clerkenwell England, but has Priories in most (if not all) Commonwealth (and some non commonwealth) countries. And it has the same black eight point cross flag, but with added gold lions and unicorns (Queen Victoria made it a chivalric Order). In fact their is a collection of “Allied Orders” of ST John, that all recognise each other and can trace their origins back to The Most Holy Military Order of ST John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta. (And a few “False” Orders as well). . The original Merchants of Amalfi flag was a white “eight pointed” cross on a blue background. And whilst Malta maybe associated with the flag, it was never at anytime, theirs. But I must add that they should be (and rightfully DESERVE to be), very proud of their current flag, for the very reasons you have stated. But you did make another slight error. The ST George’s Cross is on EQUAL standing with the Victoria cross. Just that the Victoria Cross is purely for members of the military and the ST George Cross is for civilians.
I can't wait for the Mexico episode! I'm Mexican-American and I love my ancestral home! Just came back from a 2-week stay at my grandparents' home in Jalisco and I loved it :) Since we still have quite a long way to go 'til the US episode, I'm glad that Mexico is coming up soon to tide me over (just 3 more countries to cover!)
Great video! But you forgot to mention that the national flag of Malta is the only national flag in the world besides that of Belize's to feature humans on it.
watching this on bed, sideways, and I see my county flag, (which btw is celebrating Independence Day right now). anyway, salam from Indonesia to the Maltese ")/
I definitely did not expect to see a package from Ciudad Juárez, and definitely DID NOT expect Barby to put on the shirt of the local football team!!! Thanks for the guy who sent the package, and thanks Barby for displaying my hometown in your channel!
I got recommended a Lingy Beige video about Malta! Hope more people are recommended this video, you know, people that are not already subscribed to him or have not watched the video already XD
The flag of Malta was given by Count Roger of Sicily, who tore a part of his own flag which was a red and white chequered flag (hence the red and white Maltese flag being the torn section) which he then handed to the Maltese. As correctly stated, the Georges Cross came later as a honour to the Maltese people for their Bravery during the War.
Hi Barby, I've been a geography now fan for quite sometime and naturally since I am maltese I was excited for the Maltese episodes ever since I started watching. I am impressed on the amount of research you did and you got most things right. Though in this video when you got something kinda wrong. The colours of the flag probably didn't come from Count Roger since that is a legend and not a fact. The colours actually represent other things. I forgot what they mean exactly but I definitely know that they didn't come from Roger. But I am still impressed with your research!
i think the white is the purity of the people, the red is the blood of the people who fought for freedom, and the george cross is malta's award for being so brave and other cool adjectives in WWII, given by King George
Left side of the road in the Northern Hemisphere exists in United Kingdom, Ireland, Thailand, India, Bangladesh, Guyana, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Suriname, Malta, Antigua and Barbuda and other countries.
5:30 I'm actually full Mexican, but because I was in the US, I wanted to send the letter because it was way more cheaper sending it from the US rather than from Mexico. But yeah, I'm so glad that you got the letter :D
After you finish the country analysis series, you should start a “travel the world” series, where you first handedly explore the culture, traditions and practices of countries around the world.
Hey Barbs! Amazing video, like always! I was wondering if you could do a filler video on the states of India, like you did with Brazil. It would be super cool!
Hey, you have great voice for lecture because I am not bored and be happy with new neighbors, maybe they're not changed and Goodluck in your new place and home
At least My country (South Africa ) wasmentioned once in this video at 7:10 and is that also a new commemorative 10 Rand ? Looks like the Mandela Mvezo scene
I'm excited because you are on Malta which means my country (Poland) will be soon, I just have to wait for the M, N, O, and some P countries before the Poland episode :D
How to fix disputes: if it's related to 2 places having the same name, just give the area to the country with that name. If it's about a historical claim, just give it to neither of them and make it independent instead.
Hey i've just tought, where do you store the big flags, do you have a rack or something to display them like posters at the store or how do you manage this collection? Would like to see a video about it like a tour of studio when you are installed ^^
Where did you get that shirt?! I'm from Bham, AL. ALmost (see what I did there) didn't notice it but was shocked and I love your videos so I am curious if you've been there yourself?
The George Cross is actually the *most* honourable civilian award; the Victoria Cross is the most honourable *military* award so comparing them isn't entirely fair
oh hey barbs you should come to romania. i think you particularly (since you're far from the average traveler) would enjoy it and the fact that we have far fewer tourists. also yes our national chocolate is rum infused for some reason.
I assume the colours of red and white of the Maltese flag was a reference of the Kingdom of Savoy, and the Italians have the red shield with the white cross on their green, white and red tricolour; when Italy became a unified country.
Psssh and you thought Bhutan was the only sovereign state flag with a dragon on it. Wow! Thanks to all you guys that bought GN T-shirts! Interesting :)

I got recommended a Lingy Beige video about Malta! Hope more people are recommended this video, you know, people that are not already subscribed to him or have not watched the video already XD
1:40 optical illusion: it looks like the red on the left side of the Knights of Malta is darker than the right one but it actually istn't!
The flag of Malta was given by Count Roger of Sicily, who tore a part of his own flag which was a red and white chequered flag (hence the red and white Maltese flag being the torn section) which he then handed to the Maltese. After you finish the country analysis series, you should start a “travel the world” series, where you first handedly explore the culture, traditions and practices of countries around the world.

Just a heads-up: ”Roope” is pronounced [ˈroːpe], or kind of like ”RAW-peh”, with a rolled R. 🇫🇮
When you got to the geogra-fanmail boxes from the UK you pronounced the tallest mountain as ben neevis and the county of Cumbria as Combria
The George Cross is actually the *most* honourable civilian award; the Victoria Cross is the most honourable *military* award so comparing them isn't entirely fair
I can't wait for the Mexico episode
Congrats on the new house.
The coulors of the flag come from part of the rope that Sicilyn guy use to where.I am maltes
