I'm really glad this is almost verbatim the "Flag of Tajikistan" Wikipedia article because I reworked that article years ago specifically because I knew it'd be the basis of the video and it was really cool hearing him use the same language I used to describe the flag. Once I found a source to state that the red represents the blood of those who fought for their freedom I knew what was gonna happen...
why didn't you write that the 7 stars come from Zoroastrianism rather than vaguely describing it as "cultural/national legend". The president himself wrote that the reason they are on the flag is because of the 7 Amesha Spenta or "Holy Immortals" of Zoroastrianism. I don't want to assume you aren't Tajik but maybe you should research some more before writing a wikipedia article. Unless you intentionally left that out.
YES!!! FINALLY!!! My package arrived! Glad that you have enjoyed my Bolivian package. I was really looking forward to see it in a video. Thanks Paul, Keith, Ari and the rest of the team for making geography so fun.
Here from Bolivia, Santa Cruz. Cuñapé!! I watch GN since 2015 first episode. I have always been looking for geography channels and Barbie was the best, even when he was just starting the project!
For Kieth: Eagle Scout here! Least favorite merit badges were nuclear science and leatherwork. They weren’t hard it was just the instructors at those particular camps were incompetent. I wouldn’t say I had a favorite but I would say Personal Finance. I went in thinking I’d hate it but it actually greatly exceeded my expectations.
Thanks a lot , Paul 😊 my son sent you palak paneer and other lovely handmade Indian handicrafts. Thanks for taking his name in the video. He is super- excited and me too 💖💖 Love and blessings from India 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
i’m loving this! also, the yaghobi tajiks ARE descendants of alexander the great. people in uzbekistan constantly talk about it since it’s so interesting to us. my family would tell me this as well. it’s why the yaghobi tajiks have very light eyes and light hair. they have macedonian ancestry.
Yaghnobis are descendants of eastern irianian tribes same as tajiks while tajiks in some regions gave way to persian yaghnobis and pamiris savedd their old tajik Iranian dialect. Stop spreading false information if you do not know! People talk about smth without knowing
Yaghnobis are descendants of Sogdian people. They had hidden in the mountains when Arabs took over their territory. Thus they preserved their original language which is considered the successor of Sogdian language. Sogdians descended from Scythians, thus the Yaghnobis have light skin green eyed European looking people. Also, people who claim that these people (Yaghnobis and Pamiris) are descendants of Macedonians, have you ever asked yourself a question: if they are really the remnants of Macedonians or Greeks, how come neither Yaghnobis nor Pamiris have no influence of Ionian culture in their language or culture? As a Pamiri (who are often being linked by some “historians” to Macedonian soldiers of Alexander) I can say with 100% confidence that there is not a single word in our languages which would have somehow linked us to the Macedonians.
Great fan flag friday!! Kirkaldy in Scotland is pronounced more like Kirkoddy! Hope you all visit Scotland one day, maybe when you're doing the UK episode!
As to the book in the emblem, I strongly infer it is a Quran since it rests on a rehal. It is an x-shaped, collapsible bookstand, which is more than often used for reading the Quran while seated in the mosque.
The pronounciation of Kirkcaldy is kir-kaw-day. Or at least that's how I say it. Source: I'm from Kirkcaldy, never thought I'd see my hometown on here haha.
Those 3 colors represent the Iranic world and the order also matters because when its red white and green(starting from top) it means that it's a Iranic race and country but when its green white and red it means that its the mainland (Iran) so basically you can have as much as those red white greens as you want but there can only be one green red white (and also I wanted to add that the talish ppl flag is also red white green)
Did national service in Tajikistan (Dushanbe, Khujand, in and around Wakhan territory) and it's like they got as far as the 80s and didn't move further along in time haha
Back in the late 70s or early 80s, Julius Erving (Doctor J) starred in a basketball movie called "The Fish that saved Pittsburgh." All of the players on the team were Pisces.
@⌘ Hyperborean Bard ⌘ I can appreciate that, some see my land too as idealist from outside eyes, maybe through rose tinted glasses biased by media, Australia isn't so crash hot these days to be. Wouldn't be so bad if we were still mostly friendly, but we aren't anymore. If we ever really were.
While it's a nice gift, for what it's worth, that Palak Paneer can be bought in most US grocery stores. You can also get frozen versions in Trader Joe's and Indian grocery stores.
Much more interesting about the Yaghnobi is their language, which is a descendant of Sogdian, an Indo-European language which was spoken in all of modern day Kasachstan and Uzbekistan and beyond until the end of the early middle ages. It belongs to the North-Eastern branch of the Iranian languages, as does Ossetian (Alano-Scythian).
@10:23, haha, There's a large Ethiopian community in Sioux Falls, SD because the local meat plant takes them in as immigrant workers. One of my coworkers at SD-DOT is Ethiopian and lives in Sioux Falls. He's recommended two different Ethiopian restaurants to me in Sioux Falls and invited me to his latest daughter's baptismal party. There are also Ethiopians that live in Pierre and Aberdeen in South Dakota.
Pardon my ignorance, but it seems that you know many people around the world, so I was wondering: Do you have a discord server, or other chat groups where we could get in touch with different people of certain countries we might be traveling to? Say I'm traveling to Germany, or Mexico, etc. would there be a way to us to get in touch with other geography peeps to better explore the world?
Super close to the UK! And a bit of trivia, in the UK! Asians=south Asian But the USA equals Asians as East Asians Also, Tikka Masala came from the UK and NOT India.
As an official spokesperson for Geography Now I'm going to have to ask you to please watch the episode first before the Flag/Fan Friday episode. Or you will be penalized.
Some hockey trivia for barbs: the detroit red wings fans throw octopi on the ice, usually during the playoffs. It started in 1952 when the wings became the first team to go unbeaten in the stanley cup playoffs. At the time it only took eight wins to clinch the cup so as a good luck charm, a pair of brothers who owned a fish market threw an octopus on the ice at the old olympia stadium during a game. They won that game and it stuck from then on. There is actual etiquette for when to throw it
I’m so pissed I just noticed I want subbed and I’ve been watching your videos since I think you were around the C’s in the A-Z countries, I just subbed but man that’s still sad highkey
Ari, our first FINN joins with Keith in Fan Friday, where we talk about Hockey fights, deep fried pickles, and something about the Pope. ENJOY!
