I think it’s a real shame that the British people can’t hunt game with archery equipment. Such a long history using bows, and in 2023, it’s completely banned there.
It's been banned for peasants to hunt since the Norman invasion in 1066, nothing new. Killing deer or any other game was punishable by death, back then.

Don't forget you just physically have a lot more space to hunt than in the uk. We don't have large expanses of wilderness that can be adequately used for bow hunting. Also apart from deer, we don't have the large game available to hunt, imagine only being able to hunt rabbits and nothing else, Most people just wouldn't do it. Because of the population density in the uk, your freedom to hunt anywhere would very quickly be countered with the next person's freedom to walk through the the countryside as there is a massive overlap of territory where both would be.

It would not be regarded by the UK population as humane. I can imagine the reaction to footage of deer running around with arrows sticking out of them. Somebody would burn your house down, once they printed your picture in the paper. In the US there is a totally different attitude to hunting given that the shorter history and hunting was done to survive.

I've had the Police in my House, my Asiatic bows are on display, with arrows as ornamentation, Police didnt care, or even comment, Archery in the UK is seen as a gentile sport, not an offensive weapon, if you had a Crossbow on display, they might have asked why you needed that thing! I practice Archery in the back garden and I am very proficient, I even sometimes shoot up a local field, if I took an airgun out these days, the Police would probably be around. Any decent house dog is a deterrent, to thieves and burglars, agreed 💯 I did edit out a story of me and a burglar in my home. I broke his leg in the ensuing scrap, but hand to hand is dangerous I prefer a bit of range.
Back in the 1950s and 60s we used to make our own bows and arrows out of saplings and dowel wood. We didn't have all these petty laws back then. Fun times.

Archery is encouraged, there's plenty of ways to shoot without needing to hunt and traditional English longbows are popular. We don't have the same hunting culture you guys have, only a tiny amount of people here hunt and I doubt many of those would hunt with a bow even if it were legal.

There are laws against causing harm to others, these laws should cover all weapons without the need for further legislation. If you injure of harm other beings then there is law on place to deal with such crimes. Banning anything has NEVER worked as criminals ignore the law anyway.
I think much of this advice is questionable from a legal viewpoint. For example, in general people are not allowed to possess weapons for self defence in the UK. You can keep a bow in your house as an item of sporting equipment, but you cannot keep it as a weapon. If someone breaks into your house and your bow happens to be handy, then it may be legal to use it as an improvised weapon, subject to the laws of self defence. But you cannot keep a bow (or any other item) in preparation for a self defence situation.
Exactly, your point being? How can anyone tell if you are keeping a bow as a weapon when bows are classed as sporting equipment? In one's home there are knives and other tools that may work far better for self defense, but they are not there specifically for that purpose. I stand fully behind the advice here and as stated in the beginning of the film, this does not count as legal advice.
A bow in a self defence situation seems very unrealistic and borderline unlawful. Unrealistic because you most likely store your bow dismantled or unstrung. Even if it were assembled, a panicked arrow to the stomach or chest isn't likely to stop someone in their tracks. Also, I say unlawful because "Reasonable force" is so vague. I interpret it to be: you can only fight like with like. As in, only if the assailant has a equally powerful ranged weapon, you may use a bow. In this crazy world I can imagine how a prosecutor might win with an argument of "Well you didn't let the intruder get close to you so how did you know he had violent intent?"
If you are in a situation that requires a bow for self defense then the question of reasonable force is gone. Society would have broken down beyond repair, law and order will have gone completely. Until then not appropriate.

I have swords as well as bows. When faced with an intruder 20 years ago that was trying to crawl through the bottom panel of my door that he's just smashed with an axe that was still in his hand - I hit him with the telephone table. The police were entirely comfortable with that. The intruder wasn't. Think first - is that thought of reaching for that weapon the right thing to use? A sword, a baseball bat, a cricket bat - such things can be contrued as having an offensive weapon to hand that was there to be used as an offensive weapon. In other words - premeditation. That can land you in prison for a very long time.
That is not a broadhead. That is a leaf head. Leaf heads go back to early medieval times or before - pre-400AD. Broadheads are characterised by being - broad. That one is not broad.
Ha ha yes I do know, I was going sing it as a generic term. Leaf heads were a favourite of the Saxons. The Romans pre sixth century had a wide range of warheads, for different purposes. The leaf head was mainly a hunting tip as they cause serious bleeding but do not penetrate hard surfaces too well.

The tangs were very long and the idea was to shoot them to stick upright in the ground ahead of advancing cavalry. The shafts would snap off and the tangs would impale the horses hooves. They were called Pilstikern.

When shooting in your backyard, if you shoot with your own house as the backstop, you will have fewer problems with neighbors than you would using a common fence between properties.behind your target.
When I lived in England, I was in the backyard of a place I was renting, and the Constabulary was called because I was shooting it and the bow looked scary because it was a camouflage compound bow.

If I as a hgv driver stop somewhere and go on a field to shoot arrows.......that field or meadow surely belongs to somebody so it is illegal for me to do this because no permission given to me by owner.......so hypotheticaly outside archery is illegal in the UK because every inch is owned by someone.....
Technically you are correct, but as my father said to me, 'If you do not get caught, there is no crime.' It really depends upon the landowner, if they see you and want to cut up rough then you may have some issues. There is still some common ground left, but in wing where it is is the thing. Not many people realize that when you give someone the fingers, it was a sign from the English to the Norman Knights, to show them to watch out as they still had their bow fingers. As it was customary to punish with their removal.
The customary punishment was execution there and then. The Normans were the ones to bring military archery to these islands. The Saxons and Angels used combat archery differently, more gorilla tactics, ambush and woodland fighting. There were few archers on a Saxon battlefield, but if you went down to the woods, The two finger thing probably does come from the Saxon, however thumbs up comes from the English longbowmen a string set and ready.
Side note...while you are speaking, are you putting the bow tip onto/into the ground? This could scratch the bow and/or force dirt up between the string and the bow.
I own a Recurve bow but would'nt use it for self defence or my Katana which is hand forged in the tradional manner but a Sword that's in the style of a Samurai Sword but not layered steel is illegal
A medieval style Arming sword is not illegal though. Go figure... The law is bloody stupid regarding blades. Most folks leave long sharp bladed cooking knives out in their kitchen, perfect to arm an intruder.
1000lumen flashlight with one touch strobe is a better safer self defense alternative than a bow or a crossbow, the attacker will be blind for several seconds while with a bow or a cross bow your adrenaline will make it very difficult to do any meaningful work with it. I buys the concept of a bow or rather a crossbow in a survival scenario but for self defense no.
A short bow or pistol crossbow work great inside a house, but a nasty touch would work but you would still have to get close up and personal and that is dangerous. I edited a story out of the above video regarding a time when I caught a thief in my home. He tried to do me and we got close up and personal, I have experience of too many fights in my life but I can fight, but it is dangerous. @@addersbowman I think you have to get up and personal either case as it is a 1 shot weapon pretty much and given the situation if you miss you are pretty much screwed(as you wrote hitting someone and go in to melee). the difference is also that blinding someone with a flashlight will not have any legal problems while trying to shoot someone with a bolt or arrow will. the flashlight have similar effect as if using pepper spray. and you can always combine it with a HDR50 paintballmarker with actual pepper balls or rubber balls and the marker is a superb pistol whip if needed. another good thing with flashlights is that you can have it with you anywhere. and if you walk down a dark alley in the night lighting it up will make any robber reconsider you as a target.
@@addersbowman thank you for commenting btw. and I am not raining on your parade as I have had similar ideas in my life and I have done some research and come to different conclusions. same actually when it comes to a eventual survival situation. I do have both crossbow and bow prepped for survival, but the go to tools if that would be the case is actually traps. I mean hunting is fun and all but realistically traps are way more effective.

In England, it is illegal to wild camp and 98% of waterways are private with no public access. The country is run by the few, for the few.

That is not a broadhead. That is a leaf head. Leaf heads go back to early medieval times or before - pre-400AD. Broadheads are characterised by being - broad. That one is not broad.

Leaf heads were a favourite of the Saxons. The Romans pre sixth century had a wide range of warheads, for different purposes.
The leaf head was mainly a hunting tip as they cause serious bleeding but do not penetrate hard surfaces too well.
@@addersbowman Early leaf heads were very often tanged not socketed. Tanged heads were also used as recently as the 17th century in Sweden from crossbows. The tangs were very long and the idea was to shoot them to stick upright in the ground ahead of advancing cavalry. The shafts would snap off and the tangs would impale the horses hooves. They were called Pilstikern.

When shooting in your backyard, if you shoot with your own house as the backstop, you will have fewer problems with neighbors than you would using a common fence between properties.behind your target.

When I lived in England, I was in the backyard of a place I was renting, and the Constabulary was called because I was shooting it and the bow looked scary because it was a camouflage compound bow.

When it comes to self defense, you have to show that you are unable to retreat, and they would no listen to warnings to stop.
Also if the situation is so bad that a bow is useful, then it's a life changing event, not just an everyday drunken attack.

If I as a hgv driver stop somewhere and go on a field to shoot arrows.......that field or meadow surely belongs to somebody so it is illegal for me to do this because no permission given to me by owner.......so hypotheticaly outside archery is illegal in the UK because every inch is owned by someone.....

It really depends upon the landowner, if they see you and want to cut up rough then you may have some issues. There is still some common ground left, but in wing where it is is the thing. Also parking the HGV might be an issue 🤣

I own a Recurve bow but would'nt use it for self defence or my Katana which is hand forged in the tradional manner but a Sword that's in the style of a Samurai Sword but not layered steel is illegal
A medieval style Arming sword is not illegal though. Go figure... The law is bloody stupid regarding blades. Most folks leave long sharp bladed cooking knives out in their kitchen, perfect to arm an intruder.

1000lumen flashlight with one touch strobe is a better safer self defense alternative than a bow or a crossbow, the attacker will be blind for several seconds while with a bow or a cross bow your adrenaline will make it very difficult to do any meaningful work with it. I buys the concept of a bow or rather a crossbow in a survival scenario but for self defense no.
A short bow or pistol crossbow work great inside a house, but a nasty touch would work but you would still have to get close up and personal and that is dangerous. I edited a story out of the above video regarding a time when I caught a thief in my home. He tried to do me and we got close up and personal, I have experience of too many fights in my life but I can fight, but it is dangerous. I would much prefer to pop a bolt into someone before decking them. Thanks for the comment🤠
@@addersbowman I think you have to get up and personal either case as it is a 1 shot weapon pretty much and given the situation if you miss you are pretty much screwed(as you wrote hitting someone and go in to melee). the difference is also that blinding someone with a flashlight will not have any legal problems while trying to shoot someone with a bolt or arrow will. the flashlight have similar effect as if using pepper spray. and you can always combine it with a HDR50 paintballmarker with actual pepper balls or rubber balls and the marker is a superb pistol whip if needed. another good thing with flashlights is that you can have it with you anywhere. and if you walk down a dark alley in the night lighting it up will make any robber reconsider you as a target.
@@addersbowman thank you for commenting btw. and I am not raining on your parade as I have had similar ideas in my life and I have done some research and come to different conclusions. same actually when it comes to a eventual survival situation. I do have both crossbow and bow prepped for survival, but the go to tools if that would be the case is actually traps. I mean hunting is fun and all but realistically traps are way more effective.
