    You can get a dKH standard for the tester I believe. I use the Hanna standards for NO3 and PO4 as I had issues with my auto tester reading too low.
    The thing I noticed about the Hanna checkers is when you insert the reference tank water for the first time at C1 then press the button and wait for C2. Sometimes this wait takes an age, other times its quick. I wonder what causes that and if it effects the results?

    When the bottle of reagent is close to the end, the checker always gives lower results than the real ones. In fact, when it happened to me the first time, I was elevating KH because it read low 6s. When I got the new bottle, it was over 13. DISH.

    Always use one that’s not expired. Never seen any change between “old” vs new bottle. solid sits at 8~8,2 does spend a bit of time making sure I do it exactly the same way every time
    Never had a problem between bottles/lots

    Some interesting watching there, I am in a similar position myself and doubting the opened one, got an unopened one. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and open it!?! Great topic, well done Alex

    Interesting Alex, not sure what the tolerance range is on the ppm tester, but in any event think it shows that throwing away reagent is wasting money.

    Cool experiment thanks for doing it!!
    Would have been interesting to see with a reference water sample (one we 100% know the dKH of before testing the hannas!). Testing multiple times with the same reagent to minimise variance in results.... if you have a spare afternoon to do that 😉

    A real micropipette to take the re-agent would have been ideal with a different tip for each to avoid contamination. Also, I would have re-used the same vial since there are glass discrepancies between them which can slightly alter the result. You should retry the test, would be interesting to see. Have you read on reef2reef about the re-agent being refrigerated once opened?

    Never knew you could measure alkalinity by ppm, I accidentally purchased the right one 😅
    Interesting experiment. I’ve purchased a years worth of reagent on Black Friday
    looking forward to stream and England match

      Doesn’t matter as both reagents (DKH & PPM) work in both Hanna checkers. The only difference is the price. Plenty of this on Reef2Reef and from Hanna reps on YT.

    What are your thoughts on Hanna calcium checker? I am losing my mind with the titration tests.

      Too much faff in my opinion - the only Hanna checkers I like are the nitrate high range, phosphate ultra low range and alkalinity.

    Do you think the completed test on the left looks slightly lower than the others?
    It wouldn't make sense that you put less reagent in and got a higher reading, so I wonder if the vials vary slightly in thickness and could throw out the reading out?
    Or the simply answer is perhaps you did it right and there is a reason for the expiry dates?

    • @ReefDorkXtra
      @ReefDorkXtra  Рік тому +1

      The tests were all fine - for what it's worth, I was expecting it to be out by half a dkh with the old reagent as I've done that test a few times before. The unopened one surprised me a bit but I think it just shows the dates are there for a reason. But this wasn't intended as an exact scientific test - I think that's overkill - just to show that the dates do mean something but it's probably not worth throwing them away before you use them up, unless you're getting really funny looking results.

      Probably not but you can get a calibration sample if you want to check...

  • @SkunkShrimp

    Well if it's 2/2 expired is exactly half off despite being open or not, one could just account for this then test with new regent less frequently.

    • @SkunkShrimp
      @SkunkShrimp Рік тому

      I also would have double tested the new unexpired sample twice or three times to see if you get repeat results.

    I have the dKH Hanna Checker and recently purchased some reagent. I was shipped the reagent for the PPM Checker and the was told both reagents give the same result. Having two in date examples of each reagent I compared the results… the verdict, they are not interchangeable. ua-cam.com/video/Ra-uVvFlYq8/v-deo.html

    There is 0 chance your tank is at 6.9dkh if your pH is 8.0 to 8.5 ??
    To be fair I've never thought of using scales as this seems a sensible idea, always found using the glass line shocking

    • @ReefDorkXtra
      @ReefDorkXtra  Рік тому +2

      That's not correct, in fact the pH of the ocean is around 8.2+ and yet the alkalinity is around 7dkh. But this water was taken from my Fluval Evo, not my main tank.
