I'm not even religious at all in my adult life and it hit me.
Except that amen just means "let it be", or "so be it" in ancient Hebrew and has nothing to do with Jesus or a god other than it is often used used it to end a prayer to said deity. For a person to use such a common word in support something objectionable is hardly blasphemy, especially if that 'objectionable something' is supported by the foundational texts of the religion. Jesus may have shown some respect for women, but Paul is pretty clear about submission of a wife to her husband, which is this preacher's argument, and not a general treatment of women. This guy is a hypocritical, arrogant tool, and his ideas are abhorrent, with both deserving of being laughed out of town on a rail, however the scriptures of his religion back him up. That says a lot about about the scriptures, and even more about the secular egalitarian reasoning that is used to reject his argument as immoral and fallacious.

I don’t understand the idea that women aren’t visual. Like girls / women don’t care about physical attractiveness? Do they think Brad Pitt, Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba and all those other hot male stars rose to stardom by talent alone? Lol
It also ignores the fact that humans in general are visual creatures. Just as many women are out there drooling over Hugh Jackman or Henry Cavil or Tom Cruise as there are men drooling over female celebrities. Both men and women put importance on visual attraction and both crave emotional intimacy and support. But it's easier to claim that "men are visual, women are emotional" so they can justify their poor behavior.
I've been married almost 11 years, been with him for over 16 years, and he has always told me the same thing when I asked if he found me attractive: "I love you. I love your heart. I love your body because it is part of you. I want you to lose weight (I'm a bigger girl) not for looks, but so that we can both live as long as possible to grow old together."
This preacher doesn't love his wife, he loves his vanity and she is nothing but an object for him to value his own worth with.

Of course, being an atheist, you would like religious people that are able to come up with creative reasons that they don't need to follow their religion. It would be very convenient for atheists if all Christians just decided to stop actually practicing the commands of their Lord and Savior and lived according to how you, as an atheist, would prefer.

The Church, namely the historical and apostolic church (the predecessor of the modern Eastern Orthodox, as well as Catholic Churches) was not formed until the 3rd century AD. Typical, as an atheist, even your knowledge of basic historical facts regarding Christianity are lacking. Don't talk about subjects which you clearly have no knowledge.

As a woman, I think it’s perfectly fine for a man to desire a trophy wife. Pay for her to get her gym membership, a personal trainer, pay for a housekeeper, a cook, a nanny, pay for her Botox, laser hair removal, chemical peels, plastic surgery, manicures, pedicures, serums and creams, give her a generous clothing and accessories budget, pay for her dietitian, sports psychologist, acupuncturist, chiropractor, pay for massages, eyelash extensions, tanning, dental work and teeth whitening, pay for her luxury beauty brand make up and hair stylist, and dietary supplements. Hire a personal assistant for her to take care of all the social appointments with family and friends, and coordinate all of your free time. Also be available to sit in for her on the children’s school meetings and appointments that she will be missing. And provide her the time and space to work out every day, go to all her beauty appointments, and style her hair, make up, and outfits and don’t expect her to work or worry about contributing to your household income.
If a man provides all of this, then I see no problem with it. 😉

My ex was a pastor. We were married 15 years. He would preach on how to treat a woman whilst abusing me before church or on the way home. His message brings back a lot of bad memories about my time in a particular denomination's Christian circle.

What I can say is that I would never be in a relationship with someone who doesn’t consider me their equal - a person with ambitions and desires and wants and needs independent of them. I think this is a good starting point, Christian or not, conservative or not.

I've sat in a church where a preacher yelled at us from the pulpit to start a diet. You could feel the tension in the room. Some women laughed out of discomfort and alot of us felt embarrassed and shame. The men who yelled "amen" made us feel worse. I've also sat in a church where the preacher took a long break from the sermon to explain in DETAIL who can and can't wear skinny jeans. I also need to mention these where the more progressive churches I could find. Needless to say, I've taken a long break from church.
I can't... ugh. How horrible! I hope you have found or will find a community where men are normal human beings and women don't (have to) put up with blatant misogyny and fat phobia.

“Progressive Christians” sounds contradicting. God condones slavery, unequal treatment of women, infanticide, genocide, racism, favoritism, how is *any* of it ok? A lot of Christians say “but that’s the Old Testament”, but in Malachi 3:6 God says plainly, “I change not”. Isn’t he supposedly eternal? Do you not take it all or take none of it? Did he *used* to be bad and changed in the NT? If so he contradicted himself in Malachi 3:6 and every other place where he claims he’s unchanging and perfect.

And having faith does not make something true. Some people have a strong faith in Allah, Krishna, even aliens, their faith doesn’t make it true. Faith is what you have when there’s no other evidence. And there’s plenty evidence that the Bible is not a work of good, justice or equality.
It's amazing how I make no effort at all to look good for my husband, yet he's constantly wolf whistling me, calling me "The Most Gorgeous Woman Who Ever Lived", and has even informed me that I would look good wearing a sleeping bag. It's almost as if he loves me for who I am and not what he wants me to be.

He refused to let me wear any for our wedding because he wanted to marry the "authentic" me. (And when I say "refused", I mean in a joking manner.)

as someone who’s been battling an eating disorder for almost a decade, hearing people casually say “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” makes me sick. i was 10 when my ed started, so the fact that there were probably children in that audience horrifies me.
As someone who’s been fat and thin, it’s complete nonsense. I’ve been thin and hated myself. I’ve been fat and learned body acceptance. It’s a state of mind.

It’s not simply about a person’s weight- it’s about why they care about their weight. For health? For combat? For convenience? For personal aesthetics? I'm agnostic, but this was recommended to me and I decided to take a look. Thank you so much for how gracefully and beautifully you tackled such a terrible sermon. This was obviously a man using his platform to spread hate and abuse, and rather than stoop down to his level to point out his hypocrisy, you eloquently discussed how damaging his views are. I truly appreciate the love and support you provided to the women in his congregation and the way you discussed how certain verses have been used to coerce and abuse women, even though that doesn't fit in with a community that should radiate love and acceptance. You were well-spoken, graceful, and compassionate.

Just so you know, that dragon story at the end was from Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. It was in a whole section about convincing women that we need to let men open the pickle jar and stuff like that so they can feel strong and helpful. If I can't reach something or open a jar, I DO ask my boyfriend for help because it's true that people like to feel strong and helpful. ALL GENDERS are happy when they get to be strong and helpful in a relationship, not just men. STOP teaching girls that they need to give up their strength, intellect, and sense of pride in themselves in order for men to feel good.
In such instances I don't ask my husband for help so he can feel strong, but out of mere practicality. Because I need help now. One could make a compliment afterwards. Everyone likes compliments. That's just normal, nice human interaction.
