    Nice sawing, Jason. That first log was alive! That slab just jumped right back on top. It's a good thing it didn't unsaw itself or you'd have extra sawing to do.

    A productive morning leaving time for fun with the kids. Life is good! Watching you going back and forth trying to center up the pith with the toe board, I couldn't help thinking how nice a remote hydraulic control would be out there near the end of the mill. I guess it's a good way to get some extra steps in for the day;-)

    The main reason for my previous comment was that after just a short while, you took the respirator off. While on a submarine, I often had to wear a respirator like device for drills, and later as a boat builder I frequently wore a respirator because the chemicals were really bad.
    Respirators are very uncomfortable. So, I am always interested in what UA-camr's are wearing. If I had a job that required constant use of a respirator (I am retired), I would look into the respirator technology that appeared during the Pandemic. It might not be perfect, but better than nothing seems fine to me.

    Do those first cuts off each face of the log just go in a burn pile? Do you use them for firewood at home? That second log was the money log, huh? Thanks for the video, Jason!

    • @NorthwestSawyer
      @NorthwestSawyer  23 дні тому

      I do cut some up to use as kindling but I end up with so much, a lot of it ends up on a burn pile. I’d like to get a chipper and make nice cedar chips.

    • @NorthwestSawyer

    Would you have access to any redwood? I need some all heart VG beveled siding to replace woodpecker damaged pieces. Otherwise I’ve got to drive all the way to California to get it. Nice video on the cedar milling…

  • @bwillan
    @bwillan 24 дні тому +1

    Have you had much of chance to use your PTO skidding winch since you got it? I am surprised that those cedar logs are still sitting on the road side hill by your property.

    • @NorthwestSawyer
      @NorthwestSawyer  24 дні тому

      I’ve used it mostly as a counterweight. The guy I bought it from said he didn’t use it once he got an excavator and now I feel like I’m that guy. I may end up selling it. I think I can make a few bucks on it.

    • @bwillan

    There are good reasons for wearing a respirator if you are going to be working with a lot of Cedar. It does have carcinogenic effects. These are especially a concern if you are working in a closed environment. I expect on the Pacific Coast the breeze is sufficient to minimize the exposure out of doors.
    However, that is not the appropriate respirator for a man with a beard. The resistance for air flow through the beard is much less than the resistance through the carbon filter. That respirator could actually be increasing the quantity of cedar aromatics reaching your lungs. So, good idea, not the right device.
    They make Powered Air Purifying Respirators for guys just like you. I have seen several on UA-cam presenters. In recent years the industry has developed comfortable high visibility PAPR's.
    If, however, you are just trying to minimize the dust, the beard will do just fine. Stay Safe
