I saw this in Netflix with my husband and, just like you, halfway through I told him "I CAN'T REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I HAD SUCH A GOOD TIME WATCHING A MOVIE!". It's so fun, the three hours flew by.

May I recommend another great and unique Indian movie? 😊 Jigarthanda Double X. On Letterboxd it was number 4 highest rated action/adventure movie of 2023. It's a gangster movie with dark humour and political themes + a meta approach in order to create an ode to cinema. It's from Kollywood (Tamil speaking, the other big industry of south India alongside Tollywood).
It's a prequel to Jigarthanda (2014). It's only very loosely connected so no need to see the 2014 (I'd still recommend it because it's great too, but it's on a smaller scale and not as mind blowing as the 2023 one)

Every time an action scene ended I just thought "That is the coolest shit I've ever seen in my life" and then the movie was like "pfft, you think thats cool? Check this out!" Everytime and topped that.

Especially when you compare it to marvel trash, I don't understand how western critics can seriously call the action "corny" or "over the top". You know what's corny? Caped superheroes and interdimensional super villains and the fact that anyone older than 13 takes marvel movies seriously. The action and set pieces in RRR are so creative and well done that it is simply the best action movie in a long, long time, and an instant classic.
Ram's introductory fight scene is easily one of the greatest action sequences ever committed to film. The camera angle from within the pile of attackers was one of the most creative things I've ever seen in a fight scene, and oh yeah apparently they had 20000 extras for the crowds. Epic does not even begin to describe this movie!

@@WestCoastWheelman FYI there was like 100-200 real people(extras) and the other people that u saw were digitally simulated crowd ...Out of those 200 people most of them were stuntmen who were choreographed very precisely to perform action along with the actor ramcharan...closeup angles and simulated crowd digital plates made those 200 people look like 20000

What I love about this movie is that it is completely stripped of cynicism and subtlety. It fully embraces what it is without an ounce of shame and because of that it feels so sincere and entertaining. It isn't afraid to go over the top with not only how it presents its action scenes, but also how it presents the friendship between the main characters. Their relationship is so pure in a way that many would consider corny, but within the film is such an endearing depiction of two dudes that are just total bros and I love it. In America, even the standard blockbuster like MCU films feel like they have to constantly poke fun at themselves (just look at how many times they make a joke about comic book names from the 60s sounding goofy). Meanwhile this film's sincerity feels like a breath of fresh air.

    • @MM-hk4pb
      @MM-hk4pb 2 роки тому +22

There is some cynicism and subtlety I think. The story is well written if you ask me. But it also embraces the over the top actions and the bromance as directly as it can while being well crafted. However, it also has profound stuff to say in the writing despite having lots of action and comedy. It could be emotional and mindfully written in that regard. An extremely lot of movies don’t care about doing all that but RRR did so and I feel it deserves to be experienced by more people.
      That’s just my take.

There’s are literally thousands of streaming international films online and at least a dozen or more playing in theaters across the country at any given time. Another good one that I saw this year was “Delicious” (French) about the first true restaurant, created on the eve of the French Revolution. The characters are charming and the photography is spectacular.

Had an absolute blast with this one, one of the best of the year IMO, and I feel that its one of those films that has a universal appeal to it that people that speak other languages, not just Americans, can still pick up on it and enjoy it at least in my case with a more Spanish speaking household. Never watched an Indian film before, but I'm glad I did having this be my introduction and been checking out others ever since like this director's previous work with the Bahubali films which I enjoyed those as well.

I've been raving about this movie since day one. I'm, one of the very few it seems, that guy in the US who just happened to start watching Indian films a few weeks before this came out. A local theater, for whatever reason, started showing them and my friend told me I'll really like it, the first one we saw. In my brain I'm thinking how am I going to make it through a three hour, subtitled movie. But he was right. The first film I saw was Sooryavanshi, on Netflix US and great too, and I was hooked. Somehow these three hour action, comedy, dance and everything else movies have been great. We had seen the trailer of RRR and didn't have to be convinced to much to see it. Right after the heartbreaking opening the next scene is one of my favorite in any movie. That sequence is all you need to see to know this is an incredible film and you are going to see some insane action. Everything else this film has is just the icing and it's sweet. If you're not convinced yet a man throws a jungle cat at a bunch of dudes. No animals are harmed because they are all CGI. It just adds to the absurdity of it all.

Many people keep talking about the disclaimer at the beginning of the movie (especially Honest trailer & Pitch meeting), Its a rule in India that if the movie involves smoking or consumption of alcohol or anything happening to an animal they have to put the disclaimer at the beginning and also during the scenes in the movie.
They put a little watermark saying that drinking is harmful to health / smoking is harmful to health / just the letters CGI for animals , It annoys me when they put the watermark during the movie.
Fun fact : Before the movie starts
      1. National Anthem should be played before every screening.
      2. A 2 min video about cancer caused by chewing tobacco.
      3. Approximately 1 min video about the importance of using sanitary products for women.
1st and 2nd are played every single time and 3rd one is played most of the times.

I always forget how many people haven't really been exposed to Bollywood movies beyond a few famous clips and cliches. I worked at a few movie theaters for 25 years, and we rented out the theater a lot for Bollywood movies, and they always drew a raucous crowd, because these movies are bonkers. That whole tonal shift happens in every movie. It's basically their version of the 3 act structure, except they have about six acts. They always start off with slapstick comedy, then romance, then end with all out war, all with musical numbers sprinkled throughout.

OMG!😯 Can't believe my favorite reviewer doing a review of 'RRR'! It's the ultimate wish fulfillment for me, as an Indian. The way this film has been winning hearts all over the world, it's just phenomenal. Thank you, Chris, thank you so much for making it the ultimate crossover entertainer from India (more specifically the Telugu film industry).🙏

If you liked this then I highly recommend that you watch Bahubaali and Bahubaali 2, they were both directed by the director or RRR and they were the movies that put his name on the map

Would recommend you to watch Bahubali: The Beginning and Bahubali: The Conclusion. It is from the same director and I can assure you, you won't regret it.

It seemed strange to me that you hadn't already put up a review of this fantastic action epic on your channel, especially considering that it's easily accessible because, at least in my country/region, Netflix has it. RRR is a pleasant religious experience.

Wow! This does it for me. Chris finally reviewing an Indian Movie! 😃
After getting Honest Trailer, Pitch Meeting, Patrick Willems and Accented Cinema video. I was wondering if Chris will review this and he finally did it. S.S Rajamouli really created something that transcended boundaries. I hope people start to pay more attention to Indian Cinema and our films also start to get better too. 🙌

To me the most satisfying part of the film is the reveal of Raju’s true motivation. At first he’s just a badass, but seems driven by duty and loyalty to the British and a selfish wish for promotion up the ranks, which I guess could be admired, but damn he’s the bad guy. Then when we finally see the long game, it’s perfect.
