"Ambulance " is a remake of a Danish film of the same name. Fun fact: It's the third remake of a Danish film from Jake Gyllenhaal, besides: "Brothers" (2009) and "The Guilty" (2021).
Well Dan, you've convinced me!!! I decided not to bother after I saw some pretty negative reviews, but now I want to check it out... unfortunately it's already finished in most theatres here in France. AND YES Jake was shockingly snubbed for his phenomenal performance in Nightcrawler, so glad you mentioned that!!! He adds so much realism to everything he does!! I also thought that Michael Bay's The Island was terribly under-appreciated!!
From the first trailers, I had a feeling that, not only was this MB's ballpark but, this had great potential to show some great characters. The actors chosen were all great, the premise was interesting, and I was gearing up to hear some positive response from early critics. It's sort of a game I play where, based on nothing more than the trailer, I try to guess of the film holds an exciting ride or a lackluster story. It's an excercize completely void of logic, but I'm usually correct, which means I'm doing something right.
It's not devoid of logic. You have years of empirical experience and can identify patterns that help you determine if a movie is going to be good or not. It doesn't mean you'll always be right but it's likely that you will. I always say you can tell if a movie is going to be good from the poster alone with a fair amount of certainty and people make fun of me for it
Dan, you’re one of the main critics I watch but sometimes I wonder how we saw the same movie. The dialogue in this movie was ungodly stupid and even the drone shots are edited in a nauseating way.
The dialogue was so bad! I had to laugh or shake my head at most of it, and the laughing was definitely not at anything the script writer thought was funny because none of the jokes landed for me.
The best thing about Ambulance is that it makes me appreciate good movies even more. SPOILERS (I guess) From the opening sequence where in the space of two minutes Cam says the same exact phrase more than once, the police special unit commander who calls off an entire chase sequence because his dog is in one car, the moment where Will and Danny chill-out by listening to Airpods whilst still be pursued, to the police having the same lemming mentality as those in Blues Brothers; my hands went over my face in disbelief every five minutes. Sorry Dan, hard disagree. The best Michael Bay movie in years doesn't make it a good movie.
Honestly anyone down playing this movie is not understanding what it's trying to accomplish. I think it's easily Bay's best and an absolute masterclass in pulpy action fun, the fact it maintains non-stop action for nearly the entire runtime is a huge achievement that should not be overlooked. Lastly, the fact that it was made on just 40 million dollars proves that Hollywood needs to get their budgets under control because this movie is huge in scale and the fact it doesn't rely on much CGI & was shot on location is probably a huge reason for the lower budget.
I get what Bay was going for, good dumb fun. But there was way too much emphasis on the "dumb" part of that equation. The plot sequences are so idiotic that no amount of action and forced comedy could save it for me. I watched it on streaming, and finally turned it off right after the neon green ambulance drove past a mass of cops without getting noticed.
'Michael Bay has discovered drones!" Dude, I nearly did a spit take! My boss and her husband are avid movie goers and they are very excited about this movie!
Seen the movie, was not impressed at all. Unbelievable story and characters, feel sorry for Jake Gyllenhaal for being in such a bad movie. Hearing you say this being probably Michael Bay's best film and it being a engaging movie leaves me speechless, have we seen the same movie even???
Don't feel too bad. I felt the same way when I saw "Free Guy". He gave it a lot of credit and I was hoping this would stand out more than I would have expected on those words, but ended being the exact movie I thought it was gonna be at first. Needless to say, I felt like I wasted my money.
imagine a world without michael bay movies…. how sad would that look like… thanks dan for that nice review… looking forward to seeing this… listening to this made me think of the island which i would think to be the best post 2000 michael bay movie… doesn‘t get too much love though…

13 Hours was easily one of my three favorite movies of 2016 (along with Hacksaw Ridge and the Ultimate Edition of BvS). I actually cried during it. And after reading the book later (it's based on a book) I have to say he did a great job of being faithful to the source material. The explosions were a bit much though, but at least no boobs.
Saw it last night with my son, who is a paramedic, so there were several "that's bullsh*t" snorts from him. But they never detracted from the fun. We both thoroughly enjoyed it while not letting obvious plot holes and nonsensical character decisions get in the way. We just went with it and had a great time. Eiza Gonzalez may be the most beautiful woman in movies today.
I liked that movie a lot too 👍🏻 interesting plot, good execution, and Ewan and Scarlett had a lot of chemistry. I’d love to see them together in another film
Props to you for acknowledging how dedicated michael bay is to his craft. He really is very hands on and always wants to do practical action rather than CG an entire scene which is rare these days
I think this is a fair review. the only real prob with the movie was that it was about 20-30 mins longer than it needed to be. I feel this was growth for Bay. More focus on characters was a good choice. A little bit like The Island for me but this one had way more action. I am soaking in a Bay movie while we can. There will be a time when people are afraid to have so much craziness on screen and we will miss his style.
Just saw it. Watched your review right after. I think the biggest challenge I had with the film was in some of the character introductions. It seemed that some of them took a little longer than necessary and included traits that, in the end, were not germane to the story. I think the best introduction was to Lt. Dzaghig ( Olivia Stambouliah). In just a few short lines of dialogue between her and Cpt. Monroe (Garret Dillahunt) we knew her character and understood her role in the movie. Overall I agree. It was not the best but it was pretty good. Some of the drone shots definitely felt out of place or overdone. Thanks for your insight.
I echo all your sentiments on this film. My wife and I joked about filling in the "Michael Bay film style" bingo card while watching the movie, but I was genuinely entertained. I also felt a great appreciation for first responders after watching this film. Good stuff 👍🏻
Thanks Dan, you're the only critic I 99,9% agree on. I was afraid Jake Gylenhaal might have sold his soul for a paycheck with Bay at the helm, but your review has put these fears away, Thanks!
Michael Bay is a throwback to the Tony Scott school of filmmaking. Big budget franchise filmmaking was toxic to Bay's filmography but he is still a top form action oriented director.
The first hour and half is tough, but there are some good parts. Great to see the real world/not a green screen. I like in your review you said, Bay has another great movie in him.
When I watched this movie a few weeks ago I couldn't help but think that it could have been a good film if there was a difference cinematographer. The drone footage was literally nauseating at times and I never get messed up from watching something. Not to mention the hundred or so shots of actors about 3 inches away from their face. And the script was so close to a movie that was intentionally making fun of itself that it almost hurt to think how much effort those genuinely talented actors were putting into it. This movie seemed like Michael Bay was trying to tell us he's not another Roland Emmerich he's not another Roland Emmerich but all I got was he's just like Roland Emmerich

Ambulance is great. Thrilling from start to finish. Just like you said, just that you know immediately after a couple of sec that this is a Michael Bay movie goes to show that he is a true auteur. He can make bad movies and he can make good movies, but he always makes movies that he thinks is awesome. He has a distinct and very original style especially visually that other directors have tried to copy but they are not even close. I think he always wants to entertain with his movies. They are popcorn movies in true fashion. I really enjoy his transformers movies, I think for all their problems they are the best example of how to do big-budget blockbusters made for cinema. But I totally get that they aren’t for anyone. The action, visuals and sound in those movies are unquestionably great though. He is a true american in the way he always likes thing to be BIG and EPIC and EMOTIONAL in the most maximalist and clichéd ways but that is just part of the escapism and I enjoy that. Script, character, plot wise it is almost always totally generic and cliched, but he is very unique visually and the way his comedy works. I for one, usally laugh at his sense of humour 😂 And yeah, I really love that he wants his movies too look REAL. Almost all practical stunts, effects, on real location and so on. It’s really nice to see an action movie that truly looks like it is shot at location (for this movie, LA). Look at the horribly fake green screen and cgi backgrounds with movies like Death on the nile, Red Notice and Jubgle Cruise for example. Totally takes me out of those movies.
I live in Slovakia, so this movie came out here a few weeks ago already. I was planning to see it, but I made a cardinal mistake of watching 6 Underground the day before and that movie was so underwhelming to me, that I actually returned the ticket I bought for Ambulance. Now I regret that decision a bit. Everything I heard about it so far was the right side of positive.
I feel the film was a great source of entertainment. And you can see in the gunfights where they tried to add realism to it a bit just bust on how the gun sounds and the way they were firing them. I do feel it fell flat on certain subplots
Interesting. This was a definite skip for me. Starting today, every Friday is occupied by something I definitely want to see more. Maybe I can push The Northman to May 13th and squeeze this in on on April 29th.
Still waiting for that Michael Bay xxx release. As always I'm worried about the slow motion, helicopter and explosion scenes. His subtilty, with context, and perspective should make this a real thrill ride, dare I say tour de force.
Saw Michael Bay's ‘Ambulance’ Thursday night. The acting and action are GREAT! The only thing I didn't like was some of the decisions that some of the characters made which had to do with the script, but it's DEFINITELY a thrill ride! I suggest seeing it in IMAX on the biggest screen possible. 🙂🎬🚑💯
Dan im curious (if you see this) if 13 hours was not very resonant for you. I think 13 hours is Bay's second best movie, only to the rock (as a Bay-aholic.) I would be very intersted to hear why its not as high for you
If you’re an action movie fan you probably should watch this in theaters so studios continue to fund these films. Otherwise it could just end up these go straight to streaming services.
''For the first time in a long time, a non-Transformers Michael Bay film is hitting theaters.'' Pain and Gain, 13 hours and even 6 Underground for a limited time, where all in theater since Transformers.
It's been six years since a non-Transformers Bay film was in theaters (6 Underground was Netflix, 13 Hours came out in 2016). I think that qualifies as a long time, especially by director standards.
The actors were 110% committed and all so likable but there were so many completely stupid setups and sequences it was painful, and way too long, to sit through! Firstly, in what world is LA free of any traffic? Secondly, no one thought to just put a roadblock up? There is no way that officer did not bleed out and yet that was their reason for not just taking out the driver and causing the ambulance to crash. And the scene where they are in the alley, why didn't they just take off and leave the ambulance behind? The EMT could have just driven to the nearest hospital and they would have gotten away. So dumb, all of it. Thankfully, it was a free movie for me, but at a cost of my time.
From another review it mentioned there didn't seem to be any lingering body shots on the female lead in this one. I guess what we're seeing went into the private reserve.
Haha. But this movie is really restrained in that aspect. Eiza Gonzalez is never shot in any unnatural way or is lingered upon. All his worst characteristics are gone here when it comes to character and cultural personalities/stereotypes. Despite it visually and action-wise is very classic Bayhem, other than that this is the most restrained movie Bay has done along with 13 hours and The Island
I absolutely love the way that Dan criticizes a movie, I have yet to see a movie criticized by Dan that would make me not want to go see it that is not his job or any other critics job to do such a thing. There are some critics with the initials JC that start off their criticism by saying I totally hated this movie or something like that but then in the middle or at the end they say you might want to try to figure this out or you might want to go check this out but in my opinion the damage has already been done with the majority of moviegoers. I just want to thank Dan for not being super negative and really helping me figure out if I would like to go see a movie or not.

Saw it today with my girlfriend, we both enjoy it👍👍Its a nonstop action ride from beginning to end. Definitely recommended to watch on the big screen.
Dan im curious (if you see this) if 13 hours was not very resonant for you. I think 13 hours is Bay's second best movie, only to the rock (as a Bay-aholic.) I would be very intersted to hear why its not as high for you
bay is the nickelback of filmmaking
If you’re an action movie fan you probably should watch this in theaters so studios continue to fund these films. Otherwise it could just end up these go straight to streaming services.
I had low hopes and it was actually really good! Watch it!
Story was good only thing i hated that it looked like a transformers movie and the really fast movements gave me a headache and motion sickness
I'll stick with original ambulance film starring Eric Roberts, James Earl Jones and Stan Lee thank you very much!
I legitimately thought that the EMT was played my Megan Fox until this review. Michael Bay has a type, doesn't he?
''For the first time in a long time, a non-Transformers Michael Bay film is hitting theaters.''
Pain and Gain, 13 hours and even 6 Underground for a limited time, where all in theater since Transformers.
It's been six years since a non-Transformers Bay film was in theaters (6 Underground was Netflix, 13 Hours came out in 2016). I think that qualifies as a long time, especially by director standards.
I'm glad we have directors like Michael Bay around still making movies.
Seeing it tomorrow 🙂
Master Film Maker is correct! . . . . A real action Movie from Start to Finish . . . . No Sleazy Green Screen . . . .
Don’t have much to say, but here’s a comment for the algorithm
5:30 😂😂😂👍🏻
Really focusing on that shot
From another review it mentioned there didn't seem to be any lingering body shots on the female lead in this one. I guess what we're seeing went into the private reserve.
Haha. But this movie is really restrained in that aspect. Eiza Gonzalez is never shot in any unnatural way or is lingered upon. All his worst characteristics are gone here when it comes to character and cultural personalities/stereotypes. Despite it visually and action-wise is very classic Bayhem, other than that this is the most restrained movie Bay has done along with 13 hours and The Island
5:25 Dan you're hilarious, dude
Michael Bay has burned me too many times in the past. He can't keep getting away with it. I'll pass until I can see it at home.
Thanks for the kind words, Sean! That's my goal: share my perspective and provide what guidance I can. Glad you enjoyed the review!
Just watch it for the cast and acting, this is OG die hard good.
