  • How often do we sit down to 'practice' as drummers, yet leave the practice session feeling like we haven't achieved anything? Wouldn't it be great to sit down with a bit more purpose?
Nick shares his thoughts on practice in this video, and how a lot of the time we may not actually be practicing like we think we are!

I spent decades doing "bad practice", and have limited myself tremendously. I am not the drummer I could have been...but it's never too late. I have spent the past two years redefining my drumming by working on rudiments, four way coordination exercises, strengthening my singles and doubles, exercises designed to help move around the kit, applying rudiments to the kit in fills and grooves, etc. I'll spend an hour straight developing my left hand.
I no longer just "jam to songs", and I can now do things I never dreamed I would be able to do. Of course, I have to explain to my family that what sounds like me just making noises are exercises that are making me a better drummer.
One hour of exercises, and I treat myself to playing along to 2-3 songs, then back to the technical stuff. It's working - I am actually redefining my drumming.

Yes spot on. Also when you practice something new,try and incorporate it into a groove or solo and work out best way that the new phrase will work

If sounding bad is indicative of the quality of your practice I may be one of the best practicers of all time.
