if you're worried about the plot of "my hairiest adventure", the kids never existed. they were all dogs from the start. the town they live in is actually a government-owned testing lab, and the doctor that jon made fun of in 6:09 turns animals into children and gives them to adults who act like parents raising them

The twice removed title means that they are separated by 2 generations. So, they are cousins but they are also in the same generation as the kid's grandparents would be.
It's actually somewhat clever, it let's them be distant relatives and at the same time grandparent-esque figures for the charachers.

I Sexually Identify As a GTX 580TI it would still make sense. They all started out as dogs in the story, and at some points their "parents" put them through a procedure that turned them into humans. They turn back because it wears off for some reason. And even if dogs have it more often, not everyone knows that, and he recognized the dog's eyes to be exactly like Lily's, right after she disappeared. I think he also recognized a small charm around her neck, too.
