When my 15 year old cat goes in his litter box, I pat my hands on my knees telling him he's a good boy & that good boys get treats. It's so cute when he gallops and trots around sideways all over the hallway. When he's in an extra hyped zoomies, he spins around in multiple circles as he runs.
Yeah I clean mine throughly once a week with vinegar. I clean it every day or two at the longest then add more litter. I just saw my cat trying to clean litter out of his paw as I was reading this. He let me look. I’ll have to try another litter.
I thoroughly remove every trace of pee or poop more than 3-4 times a day and also in the middle of the night as I usually wake up at least once), carefully scraping sides and bottom, so that the cat always finds it clean. But I don't throw away the clean litter and wash the box more than once a month. It's perfectly okay.
I found that scooping twice a day, adding new litter each time, cleaning the box, (3 boxes for two cats), dumping said litter, All of it. Soap, water then baking soda - a dusting Only- Every week with Tidy Cats clumping, worked very well for us. No cover and nothing else needed.🎉
@@susanmurillo311 It is. I really cared for my girls, and I just didn't want my apartment to stink. I saw how two cousins didn't clean the boxes but maybe once a month, that's what it looked and smelled like, and their cats peed on their stuff. I stopped going to their homes because the smell was repulsive.
I care for 16 cats -- I did not go in search of a single one -- they are stray and feral cats. It costs me a small fortune but I love them all. I bet I spend $500-$600 a month =(
@@tinytt854 that's gross , I like you hate smelly boxes , and cats are clean . They don't like messes or they in my experience will pee on the stuff . I learned years ago , don't leave the bath towel on the floor ! This one cat would pee on it ! They are animals that keep you clean and tidy !
The wood pellets are great but you have to have the right litter tray. It is two layered the urine breaks down the pellets every few days lift the top tray off and clean the bottom tray. You also need the correct scoop. The correct scoop will scoop up the poops which can be flushed down the toilet while allowing the pellets to fall through the grating in the scoop. A bag of pellets can last months.
Another reason why not to use plastic bag is it may discipline your cat the wrong way. See may cats ago, I used to spread large Plastic bags under the litter box to protect the floor. it so happened that one of my cat took the plastic bag as part of the litter box and started doing his business on anything that remotely resembled a plastic bag. it was a very laborious and painful journey to retrain him not to do that. 😅
I have got 7 rescue cats in my home. I have 4 large low litter boxes , no covers. They have plenty of room and don't have to jump in and out of these, they just step out preventing litter from getting on the floor. I scoop them daily and add some new litter if needed. Change the entire litter boxes about every 5-7 days. This has been working fine for almost 5 years now. They have NEVER gone to the bathroom on the floor. Not once! The litter i buy has no dust at all, and no scent but it works great against odor. The cats are free to roam the house, both upstairs and downstairs. Two of them sleep on the end of my bed at night. Being alone, they are my family.
@@cassy2789 I only buy Cats Pride in the 15 lb container. I'm 68 and this is much easier to carry than the large bags. And it does help control the smell. I scoop the litter daily and just add a small amount of fresh litter and mix it in.
Thank you for an informative and well-made video. My cat likes earth from the garden that I put into the litter box and add fresh cut weeds and grass. I note that she doesnt like using if she has used it once. If my finances are ok I do put a layer of cat litter which is made of clay and lemon scented. I do note she does not like the scented one but prefer the plain unscented one. I do note she's very ok with the plain one. My cat likes going to do his loo and makes a big hole to bury his poo and covers it with the weeds and grass. The scent from the grass etc helps to keep its odour down. Previously when my finances were well, I did get litter made from pine which she was very fine with. I have only one litter box since she knows how to do it in tge day in our garden compound which is pretty large. My cat uses the litter box only in the night. I did watch some other youtube where the expert did say that it is good to add something like 40% dirt, grass, leaves to create a litter box to mimic the scents of the outdoor.
After owning cats my whole life and using clay litter my pet store recommended a corn based litter. It's wonderful my cats love it! So easy to clean the box, no dust and no odor.
Pine pellet cat litter should be good for most cats, but make sure the one you buy is kiln-dried, otherwise, it can be toxic to kitties because it still has phenol in it! I personally like to use Feline Pine cat litter - it can be bought in pet stores and in a lot of regular stores. I found it to have a better smell, disintegrate easier, and feel softer than pine pellets for horse bedding. It is more expensive than horse bedding, but still cheaper than clay litter. It's very nice
Also, if you decide to switch to wood pellets, also get a sifting litter box. Makes it very easy to sift and clean out the disintegrated wood. Look up for to use wood pellet litter, it's not the same as clay.
Good point. Thanks. Wood pellets are very different from other litters. You need to use a specific sifting litter box...you don't scoop it like clay litter.
I run a cat rescue with over 3100 cats a year. A sifting box is a waste of money. Simply shake the litter box, the wet will go to the bottom and the feces will come to the top and scoop the feces daily. But the pine pellet expansion is the job of the pellet. It will be ok to expand as a sawdust, then let the sawdust absorb once again, dont waste the pellet litter, many do. with over 100 cats, we go thru about 4000# of pellets and it is very inexpensive to use if used correctly.
@@PawsForACauseCatRescue It's even cheaper if you use the animal bedding version, which is the same stuff. But regardless of what kind you get it's pointless if the cat doesn't like it, which is all too common (just read the reviews on any wood pellet litter)
@@PawsForACauseCatRescue I have a smaller rescue here in Northern Michigan. 60 cats on premises. I find you don't really need to shake the box. If you just tilt it to one side, feces will rise to the top and all wet areas or feces planted in the bottom is easy to remove. Then repeat to other side tilt. I've been using pine for 3 years now and cats and I both are impressed with it. Thank you for all the work you do at your rescue. Mine is small but I'm the only one doing the full scope of work required to care for them.🐾🐈
Tried sifting boxes and didn't like them. First, most of them are small, especially if you have large cats. And I found that wet sawdust would clog the sifter, and urine would make its into the bottom pan. I use a 13-1/4" stackable classifier gold prospecting pan with 1/4" mesh on top of a 5 gallon bucket with a compost bag inside of the bucket. A 5 gallon bucket will hold more sawdust than any sifting box. And as the prospecting pans are designed to sit atop a 5 gallon bucket, they do so perfectly. I use medium mixing tubs, 20" x 28" x 6" from Home Depot, less than $8 each as very large litter boxes. I use a dry food scoop, and scoop the pellet blooms into the pan, stir and shake until only pellets remain, then using the prospecting pan, I toss the remaining pellets back into the box. As no urine is making its way thru this setup, there is no clogging or collection of urine. But there biggest bonus to me is that l can use any litter box of my choice.
I have 2 litter boxes, one open cover, another close-top. my 2 cats prefer the one with closed covered. As long as you keep it clean, I think this factor is not really matter.
Yes, it could. But I think what matters most is if they feel like you (the owner) takes care of making sure they're safe so they don't have to worry. If they were even a little worried they wouldn't perfer the covererd one.
All of this stuff is made up. Someone asks chatGPT to make a list about litter boxes and it spits out a script. Someone reads it, or they generate a voice. Nobody knows or cares if it is correct. They care about getting a good thumbnail and hitting the right notes for clicks. Nevermind the fact that cats love dark tight spaces to hide in. Garbage in garbage out.
The wood pellet system with a double pan with multiple holes in the upper pan so the sawdust can be sifted through to the underneath pan is what we have used for years now. It is perfect for almost eliminating odours and cheap and easy to maintain. Some older cats may not be able to transition to it. Our five year old rescue cat took to it immediately.
Yes, my 14-year old took to doing it in my bathroom instead, over the grate covering the water pipe. She hated those pellets. As soon as I switched back to clay, she never did it outside the box again.
I swear by Ökocat original. I tried their pellets, but neither my cats nor myself cared for it. The original and featherweight clump exceptionally well, easy to scoop, and absorbs and neutralizes odors instantly, just as described. I have never been so satisfied, and my cats love it. I have a 16 and a 3 year old and they almost instantly took to this all-natural wood, clumping litter. Fresh, forest (natural wood) smell, zero artificial scents, zero odors and zero dust.
Thanx for the vid. Interesting idea with pine litter. :) I knew a cat owner, who used an empty litter box with double bottom, placed it near his toilet, and his cat happily used it. She would crawl inside, do her business, scratch around instinctively to "cover the waist" and leave. And the owner just needed to throw the waist into the toilet and rinse the box a bit with water. - Very easy, clean and no need for extra expenses on litter. For those who didn`t guess: double bottom is needed to leave the liquid waist on a lower level so that a kitty wouldn`t dump her paws in it. :) There are also some cat owners who manage to teach their pet to use the human toilet :))) - without any extra tools or sometimes with a smaller toilet seat that is put over the regular one.
I found that everything in the video was true for my two cats. No covered litter boxes and no liners. I use Worlds Best Litter which has no scent and is flushable. Thanks for the video. 😻
Tried Worlds Best. I like it, but my cats don't. Clay is the only thing I've found one of them will use at all and they both seem to prefer it given the option.

I've been searching for the perfect litter box solution for twenty years. After trying a variety of litter and methods, I eventually discovered the best option for me: a big plastic storage container. I've been using 19H x 17W x 21L same litter for twenty years now; I'm in my 2nd set of 3 kittens each time. I cut an opening 9 x 10 inches at the top, and I put a litter square stool next to it for easy access. I have two litter boxes, one on the main floor and one upstairs. I will talk mainly about the downstairs litter because that is the one they use the most, as they don't go upstairs often. I use 40lb ANTIBACTERIAL Dr. Elsey's Multiple Cat Litter. I don't use a liner and pour half of the bag into the box. I scoop the litter 2-3 times a day and pour the other half of Dr. Elsey's litter 2-3 days later to freshen up the box. I also change the litter every 7-10 days and wash it once a month. This system has worked out perfectly for me and my three cats over the last twenty years, and I haven't had any issues with smell or their health. My cats have been able to climb up quickly into the litter box, and so far, my first set of cats lived healthily from 14 to 17 years. My current cats will have the same long life span. WARNING! DON'T USE BAKING SODA. After pouring in the litter box, it took two weeks before two of them started hacking. I brought them to the vet and told me they have asthma. I refuse to believe her so I had to figure out what I changed in the last two weeks; it's the baking soda! I stopped using it, and one of them has completely recovered. The other one continued to have asthma and all because I put that baking soda!
We also use two huge clear totes for our rescue cats. We got clear so the lighting wasn't diminished. We also have a large covered one in another room that a couple of them prefer. We clean them often because we habe 8 rescue cats but only space for three huge litter pans.
Great video and spot on with every point 👏🏼😻 So many people use closed litter boxes and/or sented litter and it is sad for the cats. They may still use it, but does not mean that they are happy.
in my experience the single most important factor for a happy cat is the size of the litterbox. if the box is huge, you need very little litter. all my cats loved to be able to walk around in the box, and build little littercastles before they do their thing right on top of it. sifting was not needed, the dry cigars just fall out of the next castle they build in a different corner., ready to be picked up. and with silica litter, all the pee gets absorbed anyway.
Ironically, a 'too-clean' litter box may confuse the cat: "Is this mine? Where's my scent?" Leave a bit of the old litter, just a little bit, so the cat doesn't feel evicted!
Oof... that takes quite a spacious dwelling to place the litter boxes with consideration to all the recommendations (big enough ones, more than one, in private area our of traffic, etc). I'd literally need to dedicate a whole extra room to fulfill all the requirements. :) Surely a luxury many cannot afford. I have two cats (they are brothers) that have been using a single (covered) litterbox for years and they have been very accommodating to be pleased about it which I am very lucky with. Have been using pellets for most the time; have tried all other kinds of fillers and this one turned out to be the most practical one. (also to add 1 kilo of clay != 1 kilo of pellets in terms of volume; the latter can fill much more space)
Problem is that MOST cats HATE pine litter. I have a kitten who refused to use anything but clay. Also if they do use pine, it can be hard to separate the solids. While you can sift out the disintegrated wet litter, the poop and the pellets are similar in size, so the only options are to dig or chuck the whole box.
Not being able to speak for 'most' cats I can say in my experience with cats none have a problem w/pine pellets......it depends on the cat...I have 3 cats and foster many cats/kittens.....I switched my 3 cats to pine litter when I started fostering years ago & had no complaints about it...they all use the pine litter thankfully as it is cheaper, dust free & easy to sift.
Some Pine/wood litter brands/ products are very rough and hurt their paws. I certainly don’t want to put any weigh on my hands there. Some brand offers softer texture, less pine smell, and clumping options instead of shifting. I leave new ones left open to reduce the smell. For those with backyard, I saw someone on UA-cam wetting pine pellets to disintegrate to sawdust half way and use it as non-clumping cheap litter. Since it’s not clumping, he just change it more often and dump #1 soiled sawdust to compost after #2 are discarded.
What were the symptoms of the allergic reaction?? Similar to humans?? Idt I've seen a cat (or dog) have an allergic reaction to anything. What r the signs n symptoms?? If it bothers u to talk about it-- we can absolutely skip it. Idwt mess w u or upset u. I'm sure it was already hard enough to go thru it...
@Dionne Dunsmore No problem talking about it, but I appreciate your kindness. He had blisters on his paws, ears, nose, and mouth. The most troubling was his breathing. Coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and wheezing. Fortunately, the worst of the symptoms went away fairly quickly, but he had some breathing issues for a couple of days. Internet and vet confirmed allergy. I let the per store know, but they still carry it.
Were the pellets kiln-dried? Kiln-drying gets rid of phenol (which is toxic to cats), I'm wondering if it was phenol or something else that caused the reaction. Properly treated pine pellet litter should be safe, I used it for 3 cats and it's used by my local cat shelter.
i dont reccomend that u might think they like it but a fully covered litter box traps smell and cats like clean and non smelling litter boxes UR CAT HATES IT TM
@@ark_xnvy939 they only smell if you're a dirty bastard who doesnt clean it, they are much nicer for your home in not smelling and stops cats yeeting dirty litter everywhere, if your cat "doesn't like it" tough, it'll adjust.
I agree with everything in this video. Having raised over 17 cats (and at one time we had 13 in the house) I maintained a large number of boxes to accommodate them all, had the requisite amount of litter, different box heights for the different age groups and except for one who was an obsessed coverer, flinging the litter out of the box, we had no problem. After the others became old and later passed away, we got Poncho. He is so much bigger than any cat we've ever had, and the other boxes we had weren't big enough. I bought the largest one I could find, but he frequently stands in the box too close to the edge and pees over the rim and onto the floor. Guess I'm gonna have to look into farm equipment for a small animal waterer. Still love him to pieces, though.
I had to move the box for my long cat away from the wall. He can now get his body far enough into it with head space at the other end so he doesn't pee over the edge.
@@BasktkatSuei'd recommend an ikea plastic box for a litter Box they have them in all sizes and If you use 2 stacked onto each other the Second being used as a sifter
Thanks a lot, I'll try it one by one. I'm desperate because there is one rescue kitten that stops using litter box and keeps dumping on the floor in front of the door of the cat room. Yes there are 3 kittens inside the room, but they are from the same litter so they are all siblings. I don't know why now one of them seems to protest and do her business outside the box. See I can't open the doors without spreading it. So stressfull I have to put her inside cage with litter box. Here she behaves normally, do it inside litter box. But once I let her out she'll do it again. I wish I can learn from this video and find best solution for her
I don't agree with this video almost at all. Everything said can be true but is also, in a sence, completely wrong. I use a closed litter box (took the door off) with a slight sent. My cat doesn't mind at all. I clean her litter box every night before going to bed (partially also because her litter box is in my room and no one needs to smell poop before bed) and she loves it. I think that if your cat doesn't like the litter box, just try changing one per one thing until you hit the jackpot. We are all different and so are cats. What one cat may like the other may detest.
Same.. My cat litterbox is in my room cause i keep him in my room.. And yes also.. Whenever he poop or pee i will immediately on the spot clean it cause yeah who likes to smell that right. And my cat doesn't mind.. He look alright and okay
@@What11235 I think they are warning you about everything that could happen, but that doesn't mean it's gonna happen. You could make the same video about babies and put all the stuff that they may do, have, or go through, but that doesn't mean you are gonna have to go through it all. People should really take this video with a bit more than a grain of salt.
Well, the number is also an iffy thing. Our oldest and only lady of the house only uses the 2 boxes that are where we placed the first box for her. We have added cats and boxes but she will not go anywhere else. And the boys go to all boxes, if you up the number of boxes, they just do a toilet race and go to all , plus they always stalk each other when someone goes.
Thank you, I was thinking of adding a third box to my house! But you made me think , I have 2 cats outa five that I scoop 2 times a day , those 2 stalk me to go in it first ! So yes they would mostly go just to go in it !
One of my kittens would dig litter everywhere around the litterbox all over the floor and under the trim where its hard to sweep up, and so i started putting the puppy pea pads all around the litter box and as far up the wall trim as i could which is only really a coupie of inches and i then i put a bristle board around the corner of the walls to prevent the litter from getting under the floor panels, I then tried and started using a hooded litter box with a lid but he dosent seem to like using that one. He seems to enjoy being a little mess maker, and enjoys being aggressive about his litter digging skills! When i first got him I would highly praise him whenever he would use the litter box, and I would get so excited when i heard him the first couple times digging around the litter because i knew he was using his litter box and being a very good boy! But I think maybe this taught him this excessive digging in the litter box? He is the sweetest kitten ever besides this kind of very annoying little quirk he has with digging the litter all over the floor. Hes the best little guy ever. . Does anyone have any suggestions on another way to prevent him from doing that? It makes a huge mess and when the litter gets stuck under the floor trim im scared it will stink after awhile. So is there any other way to prevent this from happening? I tried to get him to use the hooded one but i am scared to take the other litter box away cometely because i find he prefers the one without the hood.
My cat spends a significant amount of time out of doors and doesn't often use his litter tray. He only uses it, if at all at night when he is always shut in.
I have two and an extra closed litter box .the younger savannah was super fussy and would pooh outside (the Maine Coon poohs were big) they r house cats as I live next to a busy main road .I change the litter every two days lostof rubbish bags. As she was still pooing outside I decided to get a litter robot as a last ditch attempt .it’s works i thoroughly recommend litter robot prob solved
I love pine litter and I'm the only person I know that uses it - all my friends use that crazy sandy stuff - more expensive, smells weird and is super messy. Pine RULES!
Honestly....we have cats, and all heve different preference. My dear sweetheart Damian always piss on my things, I try everything, he have three clean litter boxes and I wake up in night if he used the box and run clean it. Just...honestly I was never be mad on him for this. My new little kitten was live outside, and be on home litter box first time in his three months old. From first day, he knows exactly what it is and how to use, and never go pee on floor. One of our cats use only closed litter box with swing door, and other cats hate swing door...In my childhood, litters are not sale in our country, and we use box with sand or dirt from outside.
so for my cat, after trying out a variety of litters he seems to prefer one that is pink w small stones, it's meant to absorb the odor but you need to changer it after a week sometimes even before, when he poos he calls me, when my mom came to stay with him, he peed and pooed on the couch, i asked my mom to check the litter and she said it stank - poor mr jois but i do love the way he communicates and lets us know
My cats are Amazing. They have never went out of there box. Have a small house. So have 1 box for 3 cats. I do change the litter when I find a good one... nothing bothers them. My wonderful ♥️ babies
I have a weird cat. She doesn't like to pee where she poops... and never covers her poop but scratches in her pee box like crazy, pushing all litter as far away from her poo box as possible before using it. She uses a covered box for her number twos and an uncovered one for liquid waste.
I’ve had six cats over the last two decades and I’ve used different litters with the same cat and he does not give two fucks about what kind. As long as the box is clean he’s happy. The only rule with cats is that every single cat is very distinctly different and there are no rules that apply 100%
by the way a fresh water fountain is a life changer with my cats, avoid expensive filters, i take the fountain apart several times a week to clean out slime, hair and even litter…i put my filtered water from my britta filter pitcher several times a day as they drink a lot of water and it makes a difference in their health, and happiness…i have 2 per floor of my condo, so 6 fountains, but self cleaning the filters, or even not using a filter saves on money, you really dont need them if you self clean everything weekly.
I live in a small apartment, use pine pellets and find it less smelly. Whenever I see poop, I scoop and flush. It's certainly a lot easier than scooping out clumps and discarding. And the pellets do a great job of absorbing urine and its odor.
My last cat hated recycled paper litter n sand n would come n yell in my face wen she thought it needed changing COMPLETELY with th tray washed or I'd be cleaning it up! Lol
I put brand-new kitty litter in her box, she rolled around it . Especially at 3:05 She poops outside in her litter box. She's not going into wood chips.

I use breeders select & put shredded paper on top, so cat find it easier to walk on the littee. Cat will watch me clean litter box after urinating. Look of happiness when litterbox is completely cleaned.
I had trouble FINDING a larger litter box, and our bigger cat is /maybe/ 11 1/2lbs. He's definitely long but finding a litter box that he didn't look cramped in was difficult. Granted, he'll still use the box we started when we first got him and I was still looking for something more sizable, but he (and our second) kick so much litter out of it. I only keep it down because we have it and the room its in doesn't really have space for a larger box at the moment. . .they both use it often though.
I use a plastic storage bin with low sides like from Walmart and discard the cover. Larger and cheaper than litter box sold specifically for cats. Best to get one with smooth inner walls so clay does not stick and make removal difficult.
@@BluePatriotWinner Thankfully I eventually found a couple that would work. I tried to find a storage bin. . .the dimensions were never quite what I wanted and we absolutely needed higher sides. . .our boys throw litter everywhere if the sides are too low.
I use a storage tote also. Henry is 13 lbs and stretches to about 3 feet. He also does not scratch at the litter when done..but at the sides of the bin. So if I didn’t have tall sides I’m not sure he would cover his stuff, which he rarely does anyway. Still figuring this out after 5 years. He is 11..I wish I knew his history.
I have 1 spoiled cat, 2 boxes for her. Here it is, one she chose using strictly to urinate, which is the smaller of the 2 in fact, she has used the smaller since she was a near adult kitten when I'd first rescued her 2 years ago. The larger box I purchased as she grew and for a good 1 year plus some months after she'd challenged me training her i.e I'm assuming she may have been born outdoors, then captured with a group of cats by local animal rescue team because she wasn't trained nor did any instincts give way which took a couple months of a hard won various efforts to finally get us on the same page! 1.5 years or so she will not poop in her box she picked to poop in anymore without a struggle!! She's literally gone in reverse refusing to go #2 in the second box let alone either boxes leaving me unwanted drop offs anywhere other than the proper receptacle! She always uses her original box to urinate and thank heavens she won't ever pee outside her one box! Nothing has changed there. However, I'd pay handsomely to figure out why she's canceled going in her box anymore to poop! It was so cute that on her own she'd created her own methods of which box she habitually used for either of doing her business, only to have reverted back to the beginning of me litter training! Lastly, she is an indoor as I live in an apartment building. Besides, she hates it when I saddle her harness on and take her out to where I just quit that idea nearly a year back! But this newest bad habit of pooping anywhere else other than her box is a first of any cats I've had! I keep both clean which I tell by her language and demeanor she super appreciates! It's highly disturbing to see the one remaining as clean as can be yet she goes everywhere in the apartment other than using the one that she'd marked strictly for pooping and the other to pee!! I'm sadly at my wits end 😞 Please, if anyone can offer anything you may even slightly think could solve this mystery and resolve this problem, I would much appreciate it!
I do love this video and all the other videos that are posted on this channel, However i feel the video and people just are not getting the full picture. Before i continue this paragraph though, bare in mind im not offended or trying to cover people who don't actually do a great job taking care of their cats, im only stating what needs to be stated for the cat parents who actually love their felines a lot and don't really have the confidence to state what im gonna state. So I Have two lovely cats. one is precious and the other is Rosie, Rosie is actually in my profile picture while precious is a gray tabby just like Rosie. Except Rosie is an orange tabby and is actually rare because of being a female. However, my point is there are a lot of "how toos" and "what your doing wrong" vids everywhere on the internet. However i only follow like 25% of all these videos, and reason being is because NOT all cats are the same. think about this, some cats love being in water. Which is something most people would not recommend a cat parent to encourage as you can be scratched. another thing that cats do on a rare occasion is love being dressed for photos, this is another one that this channel and a lot of other people don't recommend. However i see some people dressing their cat up and that cat actually looks happy with being in a outfit. ( I'm also not saying i would do any of this because my cats are not the 0.1% of rare cats that love these scenarios) im only saying that sometimes it really doesn't matter how you set up a litter box. all that matters is if your cats are happy and content with were they are. Think of it this way, you can have an owner that follows this step by step, but if the cat isn't comfortable with their owner it won't matter how many times you clean that litter box, that cat will stay the heck away from you for as long as it takes. i do use clay litter that is scented however i do keep it cleaned and take the extra step to empty the litter box every few weeks and bring it in the bathroom and actually scrubby dub dub and make it shiny and clean. yes i use bleach as a soaker, and yes i use other chemicals that a cat could "smell" from a mile away, However i know darn well i do better then most people who will leave a litter box for days and not even empty it out. Then wonder, HUH why isn't my cat using this litter box? well maybe its because you treat that cats litter box like you would with your room, Leave it a disgusting mess.... If you have to watch this litter box video you really should not have a cat in general as its a question of, Can you really handle the intense responsibility of a feline companion, anyways. Nice video @Jaw-Dropping Facts. I watch a lot of these and they are very interesting to know.
I think you should completely dump out the litter after 3 days if possible and put just enough to cover their elimination and use garbage bags that will cover the box so you can use that as a liner. Because all that used litter, probably bacteria grows in it and you want to start over with fresh litter every time. But keep just a little to put in a spot so they know it's their box.
they are adding urinals and a cat litter box in the women's bathroom at my job. I have worked there 15 years. and I'm disgusted that some pigs requested this. The sad state of our country right now.
Ah yes, the litter box. Let me tell you about mine. Covered lid, inside a bathtub, curtain closed to 6 inches and STILL LITTER IN THE HALLWAY every day. It looks like someone has been doing mining in there using high explosives. Same thing in the patio. Litter halfway across the patio and have to sweep and clean every day.
Some cats are different though, like my first cat was. My first cat would NEVER go to the open litter box, and my new kitten is okay with a hooded one too. So, just get a hooded one, and if your cat doesn’t like it, just take off the hood
My babies use Words Best Cat litter. Best litter there is! We tried Pretty Kitty litter and that’s the worst ever! Doesn’t clump because it’s like sand and goes right through the scooper! It’s a hype and waste of money.
I use World's Best Cat Litter. It is great for clumping and odour control, does not track much, but it does get dusty after a few days of use when using a fresh batch of litter. Also, it does leave sticky paw marks all over the carpet and furniture.
‘Pretty Litter’ *doesn’t* disguise the smell as well bc it doesn’t clump…. Not to mention you’re leaving puddles of pee for your cat to have to walk in & out of until you buy *Another* $20 bag of “pretty” pellets… 😒 screw that, I’ve been of the opinion “if it Doesn’t clump, we Don’t need it” for 2 decades now, not changing something that isn’t broke just bc there’s a “”prettier”” option 😆 Also, *who Gives a Crap* if what’s in the *cat’s POOP box* is “pretty”?? The only time I look in there is to clean up nastiness; let’s Not pretend its going to be Any more enjoyable if it’s a different color…. 🤨🙄😂
We happen to have a carpenter workshop near us. I get sawdust and use as litter. I have three large litter boxes for five cats. I clean three times a day removing poop and spoiled saw dust and adding more litter. Not a problem at all.
Wood litter is NOT good for cats, it doesn't clump it's not easy to scoop and it stinks like hell especially when it breaks down fast once they urinate, it's impossible to scoop all the waste efficiently, I love premium litter slightly scented and I use litter bags, far more easier to change once the litter is of no use and my cat still uses the litter box fine, she even has a hood covered but she uses it because it has plenty of space for her to scrape and move around, if I didn't use a hood which is what I did before the litter goes everywhere and it's a pain to clean up after which I constantly had to do before, much less mess and I don't have to kill my back cleaning it up all the time, the advice in this video is inconsistent tbh 🤔
It's right about covered boxes it may work for your cat but in general it's a no no and scented litter and clay litter are no no's as well but wood pellets way too dirty for my cat but he hated the scented more I just use regular litter or dirt!
Wood pellets are completely different than other litters. You must use a specific sifting litter box...you don't scoop it like clay litter. If you do it correctly, it never has an odor...except for the smell of sawdust, which I like. Sift it daily, empty and sanitize monthly, then it remains fresh all the time.
That's what I thought when I watched the video. In my country wood pellets cost 3 times more than other litter (clay litter 5 USD for 10L, wood pellets at least 17 USD for 10 L).
Great video - cats hate smelly perfumed litter, I would never use it. I did not realize that clay could be contaminated! Asking cats to use an enclosed box is cruel - I would never do it.
On minute 07:35 one of my cat do her business outsife the litter boxes. Hahaha. I have 2 litter boxes for 6 cats. That's why I watched this video. Thanks for the advice. I will put 2 other litter box in my cat room.
I have an issue with this poster saying that enclosed litter boxes should be avoided. If your cat finds comfort in an enclosed box w/ a single opening (cats tend to find areas like this where they feel safe, especially if it's in a home that they already feel safe in.) then more than likely your cat will use an enclosed litter box plus every single one of them these days comes with built in vents on top with replacement filters for them.
pine/wood litter is good but not very practical, you need system to clean it, example with meshes tray. and it's not good if your cat stool is not hard. it'll become messy.
Lots of generalisations. My cats does not bury even when they go outside . The go look walk away bot even a flick of the back legs. They then fetch me to clean it away. They do not like wood. We use recycled clay silicate free They hate non clumping they like to see who makes the biggest pee clump
Hiiii Yes EVERY cat/person/circumstances are different! However, watch Jackson Galaxy as he says the SAME as in this video! 😻😻 Personally, I grew up with Himalayans ❣️My late mum bred them and I've had 2 myself❤ I have always scooped their boxes 2x/day! (IF I did NOT, I sure would get an earful! lol😅) Our current tabby is the SAME! Just bought him a new box🎉 too & it's open (in our bathroom too lol) and he likes to perch/balance on the side end to go 💩 so a closed/Budda box will never happen! Annnd always FIGHTING the dust (ie:clay) factor (with toilet paper too btw!!) Pine pellet litter. If it doesn't clump, then how do you know where the urine starts, and where it stops. Doesn't it all look the same ? With the clumping clay litter, the urine causes a clump, so that I know exactly where the urine is/was. My previous cat liked the 'Special Kitty' clumping multi cat strength, odour control, fresh scent, but the damn stuff still has scent in it. It's so hard to get away from the damn scent. Some manufacturers and people have scent on the brain. I'm rescuing two cats tonight, and I hope that they will like this tonight at least. Thanks, Aarre Peltomaa
my cats like the hood box, but i take the door off, i have 5 cats and 7 boxes, i dont use scented litter, but they hate the pine pellets , so i clean boxes every morning, and i buy cheap dollar store carpets, and they love cleaning their feet on it, that and when my devil cat loves to throw litter around its easy to clean off, and even wash one a week. Food and fresh water fountains are kept on every flour of the condo, along with litter boxes. Oh avoid any scented litter…
When my 15 year old cat goes in his litter box, I pat my hands on my knees telling him he's a good boy & that good boys get treats. It's so cute when he gallops and trots around sideways all over the hallway. When he's in an extra hyped zoomies, he spins around in multiple circles as he runs.
Wash the litter box at least once a week and the final rinse use white vinegar. This takes away any smells, even the ones only cats can smell.
Lol, not many will clean it weekly, let alone wash it
Yeah I clean mine throughly once a week with vinegar. I clean it every day or two at the longest then add more litter. I just saw my cat trying to clean litter out of his paw as I was reading this. He let me look. I’ll have to try another litter.
The urine when I try to pick it dissolved in the litter what to do in those cases?
I thoroughly remove every trace of pee or poop more than 3-4 times a day and also in the middle of the night as I usually wake up at least once), carefully scraping sides and bottom, so that the cat always finds it clean. But I don't throw away the clean litter and wash the box more than once a month. It's perfectly okay.
@@deanbruce666 If the urine dissolves you need clumping litter. It becomes little balls very easy to remove.
Wow, that's a lot of work!

It is.

Hey can you tell me what litter you buy
What kind/brand litter is that?
What kind/brand litter?
@@cassy2789 I only buy Cats Pride in the 15 lb container. I'm 68 and this is much easier to carry than the large bags. And it does help control the smell. I scoop the litter daily and just add a small amount of fresh litter and mix it in.
@@cassy2789 Cats Pride, it comes in an easy to carry "jug" with a handle, usually 12 to 15 pounds. There are several varieties and they all are good.
Marian, what brand?
@@lynflom125 Worlds Best Cat Litter
@@marybradleyblack Thanks
We use that for our 3 cats. I love it, too.
Worlds Best IS the Best! It’s even flushable!
Aspen is a better choice. Fewer allergies.
That's EXACTLY what I use for my kitten 🐾. She has no problem.
What brand of pine litter is cheaper than clay litter?
@@proudcynophile1901 Don't use litter!!! I use PELLETS, and I don't know the cost of clay litter. I know pine pellets are pretty cheap!
My cat did not like the hard pellets. She was good and used it but seemed stressed by it. She kept lifting up her paws.
@@nov2263 cant deny that
All of this stuff is made up.
My 2 cats also prefer the closed top aswell as the pellets tips also good to know they feel safe thanks ❤
stick to the same car litter
The wood pellet system with a double pan with multiple holes in the upper pan so the sawdust can be sifted through to the underneath pan is what we have used for years now. It is perfect for almost eliminating odours and cheap and easy to maintain. Some older cats may not be able to transition to it. Our five year old rescue cat took to it immediately.
Will sawdust get everywhere? Is it hard to sift the box?
@@speedingAtI94"saw dust" is only at the bottom, which u can sift. is it hard to sift? in my experience, no. will depend on ur litterbox
I knew a cat owner, who used an empty litter box with double bottom, placed it near his toilet,
and his cat happily used it. She would crawl inside, do her business,
scratch around instinctively to "cover the waist" and leave.
And the owner just needed to throw the waist into the toilet
and rinse the box a bit with water. - Very easy, clean and no need for extra expenses on litter.
For those who didn`t guess: double bottom is needed to leave the liquid waist on a lower level so that a kitty wouldn`t dump her paws in it. :)
There are also some cat owners who manage to teach their pet to use the human toilet :)))
- without any extra tools or sometimes with a smaller toilet seat that is put over the regular one.
Just a note to those with a septic tank.
On boxes of flushable cat litter it says do not flush if you have a septic tank.

Clumps great but does not mask poop smell
If they were not happy with the setup you would know.
My cat is perfectly okay with the closed box, and the place is not messy and dirty all around anymore.
in my experience the single most important factor for a happy cat is the size of the litterbox. if the box is huge, you need very little litter. all my cats loved to be able to walk around in the box, and build little littercastles before they do their thing right on top of it. sifting was not needed, the dry cigars just fall out of the next castle they build in a different corner., ready to be picked up. and with silica litter, all the pee gets absorbed anyway.
Ironically, a 'too-clean' litter box may confuse the cat: "Is this mine? Where's my scent?" Leave a bit of the old litter, just a little bit, so the cat doesn't feel evicted!
2 cats with 2 boxes, no covers. I use Hardball, scoops everything up & smells good. A little pricey but well worth it, I scoop everyday.
Oof... that takes quite a spacious dwelling to place the litter boxes with consideration to all the recommendations (big enough ones, more than one, in private area our of traffic, etc).
Corn litter it is brilliant and really does last 2x a long as others
Some Pine/wood litter brands/ products are very rough and hurt their paws. I certainly don’t want to put any weigh on my hands there. Some brand offers softer texture, less pine smell, and clumping options instead of shifting. I leave new ones left open to reduce the smell.
For those with backyard, I saw someone on UA-cam wetting pine pellets to disintegrate to sawdust half way and use it as non-clumping cheap litter. Since it’s not clumping, he just change it more often and dump #1 soiled sawdust to compost after #2 are discarded.
We use grass seed litter. They all like it! 6 litter boxes!

@@dionnedunsmore9996 and I am happy to talk about it to make people aware!

Thanks, Kathryn. I’ll have to try moving the box further away. Here’s hoping that works.

We have added cats and boxes but she will not go anywhere else. And the boys go to all boxes, if you up the number of boxes, they just do a toilet race and go to all , plus they always stalk each other when someone goes.

Your 'neighbours'must appreciate the organic manure🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I use cat litter made of paper pellets. Its 12 pounds from Amazon and a huge bag
Better than clay and it doesn't smell
THANK YOU!!!! SO VERY USEFUL AND TRUE! ESPECIALLY CATS SPREADING DUST AND GERMS FROM THEIR PAWS!!!! LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!!!!
Corn based litter It is brilliant and completely eliminates any urine smell😊
My cats love theirs, it opens at the top , the litter I use is all natural by arm and hammer
My girl loved the closed litter box until the door got jammed and she got stuck inside. Then she refused to use it until I removed the door!!
@@traceysaunders4711 lol that's a cats attitude!
I have 4 litter boxes everywhere. So far no accidents. I clean them all twice a day. I may need one more.
How many cats😊
Thank you for helping us!!!
so for my cat, after trying out a variety of litters he seems to prefer one that is pink w small stones, it's meant to absorb the odor but you need to changer it after a week sometimes even before, when he poos he calls me, when my mom came to stay with him, he peed and pooed on the couch, i asked my mom to check the litter and she said it stank - poor mr jois but i do love the way he communicates and lets us know
My cats are Amazing. They have never went out of there box. Have a small house. So have 1 box for 3 cats. I do change the litter when I find a good one... nothing bothers them. My wonderful ♥️ babies
Me too have 1 litter box for two kittens, no Problems so far
I have a weird cat. She doesn't like to pee where she poops... and never covers her poop but scratches in her pee box like crazy, pushing all litter as far away from her poo box as possible before using it. She uses a covered box for her number twos and an uncovered one for liquid waste.
she is super fastidious! Mine is that way too.
Hi, just wanted to ask which type of litter does your cat prefer for peeing?
Thank you sm, i just got a cat and we've had hom for a week now and this is extremely helpful!!!
I’ve had six cats over the last two decades and I’ve used different litters with the same cat and he does not give two fucks about what kind. As long as the box is clean he’s happy.
The only rule with cats is that every single cat is very distinctly different and there are no rules that apply 100%
by the way a fresh water fountain is a life changer with my cats, avoid expensive filters, i take the fountain apart several times a week to clean out slime, hair and even litter…i put my filtered water from my britta filter pitcher several times a day as they drink a lot of water and it makes a difference in their health, and happiness…i have 2 per floor of my condo, so 6 fountains, but self cleaning the filters, or even not using a filter saves on money, you really dont need them if you self clean everything weekly.
we had one big closed litter box for 3 cats, now after moving we have 2 big closed litter boxes for 3 cats
Very high quality content and presentation. Fantastic video
Having not enough time?
than one should not have ANY pet in the first place.
as simple as that.
Keeping it clean is key!!! You must scoop frequently! Hooded or not, cats want a clean place, don't you?? 😮😮
I will NEVER use wood litter again. It’s smelly after a short time, and you can’t remove the soiled wood enough to keep it clean.
Corn litter is Amazing
I live in a small apartment, use pine pellets and find it less smelly. Whenever I see poop, I scoop and flush. It's certainly a lot easier than scooping out clumps and discarding. And the pellets do a great job of absorbing urine and its odor.
My last cat hated recycled paper litter n sand n would come n yell in my face wen she thought it needed changing COMPLETELY with th tray washed or I'd be cleaning it up! Lol
I put brand-new kitty litter in her box, she rolled around it . Especially at 3:05
She poops outside in her litter box. She's not going into wood chips.
My cats have never been afraid of their covered boxes!
Or a box !
Vets do not recommend.them.
@@lynkinealy2926WHY? MY cat has no problem with a covered box with a door.
@@malissakirby4193 they say that cats need more open space to do what they need to do in confort. It's bad for their kidneys they say. when they are in a confined space as opposed to having room to spread out more
Excellent and quality content and video , learned important information, best video on litter box I have watched so far. Thank you for putting this together!
I use breeders select & put shredded paper on top, so cat find it easier to walk on the littee. Cat will watch me clean litter box after urinating. Look of happiness when litterbox is completely cleaned.
Very good video. Im glad others get some update as to what is proper litter box care for their furry friends.
Two number twos - is that a hidden joke in the video? 😸
I also had to start usin a big plastic storage bin. My boys are just too big!!
I use a cement mixing tray.
Too much info
@@francineburkhardt9685 did i ask you?
I think you should completely dump out the litter after 3 days if possible and put just enough to cover their elimination and use garbage bags that will cover the box so you can use that as a liner. Because all that used litter, probably bacteria grows in it and you want to start over with fresh litter every time. But keep just a little to put in a spot so they know it's their box.
they are adding urinals and a cat litter box in the women's bathroom at my job. I have worked there 15 years. and I'm disgusted that some pigs requested this. The sad state of our country right now.
Duh
.... I don't understand why are u upset about litter boxes in the bathroom.
They like privacy too .
Not all of them. My cat will go in the middle of my lawn if she is outside, not in the bushes. She wants to know nothing is nearby to jump on her.
I use a child's 'bucket & SPADE' just the SPADE, to remove dirty.litter.
‘Pretty Litter’ *doesn’t* disguise the smell as well bc it doesn’t clump…. Not to mention you’re leaving puddles of pee for your cat to have to walk in & out of until you buy *Another* $20 bag of “pretty” pellets… 😒 screw that, I’ve been of the opinion “if it Doesn’t clump, we Don’t need it” for 2 decades now, not changing something that isn’t broke just bc there’s a “”prettier”” option 😆
Also, *who Gives a Crap* if what’s in the *cat’s POOP box* is “pretty”?? The only time I look in there is to clean up nastiness; let’s Not pretend its going to be Any more enjoyable if it’s a different color…. 🤨🙄😂
Great video indeed. The only "nitpick" is that there is 2 number 2s. Other than that, good video if either you have a cat or just preparing to get one
Can you prepare for a cat ? A kitten is fun , then they all grow up to be demanding of their human , having taught you what they desire !
"I'm gonna go get the papers, get the papers."
Tommy Two Times!
We happen to have a carpenter workshop near us. I get sawdust and use as litter. I have three large litter boxes for five cats. I clean three times a day removing poop and spoiled saw dust and adding more litter. Not a problem at all.
MY CAT HAS AN OPEN LITTER BOX , UNSCENTED LITTER, LOW ENTRANCE WAY. LITTER MAT. HE IS THE ONLY CAT. HIS BOX IS IN MY BEDROOM. I LIVE IN AN 1 BEDROOM.
Their script went from "doing their business" to "eliminate"
thank you it was so useful ❤
@@jaellouis4749 came here to say the same 👍 I'm not using one for my kitten yet but plan on getting one
@@jimaldo64 Once you get used to it, it's so good. No more dirty paws tracking potty clay all over your home.
What brand of cat little do you use
I've tried most litter types. Did Not like wood at all. Tofu is the best. I sprinkle but carb it Helps Soo much with odour
Pine pellets are cheap in the US but super expensive in other countries.
But they love boxes , a simple card board box 🗃
Tysm! Cuz My cat pees at my plants instead of his litter!
On minute 07:35 one of my cat do her business outsife the litter boxes. Hahaha. I have 2 litter boxes for 6 cats. That's why I watched this video. Thanks for the advice. I will put 2 other litter box in my cat room.
How often do you completely change litter? I have a sifting litter box that I sift every morning.
When you smell urine.
once a month but clean litter twice a day
Nice video
I have an issue with this poster saying that enclosed litter boxes should be avoided. If your cat finds comfort in an enclosed box w/ a single opening (cats tend to find areas like this where they feel safe, especially if it's in a home that they already feel safe in.) then more than likely your cat will use an enclosed litter box plus every single one of them these days comes with built in vents on top with replacement filters for them.
pine/wood litter is good but not very practical, you need system to clean it, example with meshes tray. and it's not good if your cat stool is not hard. it'll become messy.
Thank you for sharing.
Watching here in Europe 😆😄😝😜🤪😅😂
My cats use the arm and hammer muti litter
I have used fresh step for my cats for years no problem😮
50 lb Clay litter from Tractor supply is $12.99
Lots of generalisations. My cats does not bury even when they go outside . The go look walk away bot even a flick of the back legs.
They then fetch me to clean it away.
They do not like wood.
We use recycled clay silicate free
They hate non clumping they like to see who makes the biggest pee clump
Hiiii Yes EVERY cat/person/circumstances are different! However, watch Jackson Galaxy as he says the SAME as in this video! 😻😻
Personally, I grew up with Himalayans ❣️My late mum bred them and I've had 2 myself❤ I have always scooped their boxes 2x/day! (IF I did NOT, I sure would get an earful! lol😅) Our current tabby is the SAME! Just bought him a new box🎉 too & it's open (in our bathroom too lol) and he likes to perch/balance on the side end to go 💩 so a closed/Budda box will never happen! Annnd always FIGHTING the dust (ie:clay) factor (with toilet paper too btw!!) Pet Value 🇨🇦has a house brand for single cats that is 99% less dusty-I've just discovered it a month ago and it's much better than PC which has lavender which i liked, but is TOXIC to Ollie!!🥺
Well done ❣️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🌹

Pine pellet litter.
My cat goes in the litter box with a dog pad in it which we change as he goes he loves it cleaner for all no smell like other litters
Honestly I never thought about this. Putting a pad under the litter will probably help with the smell! Thanks for this thought
I have two cats and two boxes. And they STILL crapped in all of the potted plants in the patio.
They will because it is dirt and thats preferable Put gravel on top and it will stop😊
my cats like the hood box, but i take the door off, i have 5 cats and 7 boxes, i dont use scented litter, but they hate the pine pellets , so i clean boxes every morning, and i buy cheap dollar store carpets, and they love cleaning their feet on it, that and when my devil cat loves to throw litter around its easy to clean off, and even wash one a week. Food and fresh water fountains are kept on every flour of the condo, along with litter boxes. Oh avoid any scented litter…
Thank you
