  • February 8, 1997 - In attendance for the NBA's 50 Greatest Players celebration, legend Wilt Chamberlain lightly insisted modern league rules may have allowed him to dominate at a level exceeding that of which was seen from his romp through the NBA in the 60's and 70's.

      @realtan9026,
      Wilt Chamberlain was a great sprinter and jumper, but his lateral mobility wasn't his strong suit.
      Everytime he faced someone who made him leave the paint, it was more difficult for him to defend :
      Willis Reed in the 1970 NBA Finals is the culprit. Despite being injure most of the series; he was healthy in just two games that series (Knicks were 2-0 in those games), Reed was giving a basketball clinic : he was playing outside and banking a lot of shots. Even when he was injured, he still was able to cook outisde the paint.
      Another example, when a athletic 1962 version of Wilt Chamberlain faced the Celtics in the NBA Finals, Red Auerbach forced Wilt Chamberlain to switch on Sam Jones on game 7 of the series on a lot of plays. Jones outscored Chamberlain in that game and sank the game winner over Wilt.
      Yes, Sam Jones was an incredible player and a solid contributor, but Stephen Curry is a MVP caliber player. Far superior to Jones who never won a MVP award.
      We have to stop with the "we were better back then, we were tougher, we had more fundamentals, we played for the right reason"
      We've heard such arguments in every decade from every athlete since the 1880s! No, it's not a typo.
      I've read George Mikan saying the same thing when Chamberlain was still playing... The same George Mikan who helped creating the ABA and adopting the three-point line.

      As someone who is working with collegiate athletes as my job. This isn't true.
      My mentor kept track of tests he used.
      1990s and today's athletes are 100% better due to multiple factors such as training, nutrition and recovery.
      If we have such training to Wilt... He could had been impressive... But he was already training contrary to his former peers in the NBA. He was lifting weights already back in the 1960s! He was ahead of his time.

  • @HereIsRick
    @HereIsRick 3 місяці тому

    With zone defense being illegal in the 90s Wilt would only have to worry about one man per game, and there would be maybe 3-4 Centers in the league who could hold him under 40.
    Wilt would have easily averaged 60-70 points.

    Basically, People are repeating the same phenomenon that was happening years ago :
    "The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."
    -- Socrates, circa 440 BBC
    1990s & 2000s stars are saying how the NBA is soft now... They are romanticizing the past.
    But, did they remember the past? Many former NBA stars were repeating 1980s athletes had no fundamentals and were soft on Ray Firestone's tribune.
    In the 1990s, on various platforms [Marv Albert, Robert Costas as examples], they embellished the past.
    Bird, Magic, Dr. J, Wilt Chamberlain, Bob Lanier [and many others] all pleaded the NBA in the 1990s was watered down & lacked fundamentals.
    It's always been the same conclusion in old heads' eyes : "My era was better."
    Wilt Chamberlain once stated he would scored 70 PPG in the 1997. Why? Because he felt players lacked fundamentals & basketball IQ, while not being tough enough.
    Actually, Jerry West, Bob Lanier and even Larry Bird never said Chamberlain was wrong. They believed Chamberlain would had toyed with centers back then! In 1991, Jerry West stated Wilt Chamberlain could had led the league in blocks, points and rebounds if he was in his prime... When Jordan was still playing!
    "We were tougher"
    "We played our heart out"
    The same treatment was reserved and heard in the early 1980s when Bird & Magic came into the league. When Jordan came in, many -- including Ray Firestone, Wilt Chamberlain, Bob Lanier -- all repeat how they were better in the good old days. How they played smarter & adopted a more rugged style of basketball.
    We are only witnessing history repeating itself all over again.
    The brand of the game is different. It's factual.
    But, these kids can play and excel in some facets of the game. Is it perfect? No. But, nothing is.
    I've read Ty Cobb saying such things in the 1950s in order to discredit Hank Aaron.
    1990s players hated it when Chamberlain was talking like he did there.
    Now, the wheel of time has spun. The younger 1990s generation has became the old heads yelling at the clouds.
