Inside the Ruins of Berlin's NSA Spy Station

- On the second-highest hill in Berlin sits the carved-out remnants of Field Station Berlin Teufelsberg, a former NSA spy station used to collect signals intelligence on Soviet-aligned East Germany during the Cold War. Before the aging structure decays beyond repair, a newly appointed manager hopes to give a second life to this architectural relic from a very different, yet not-too-distant, time. Can it be saved? We went inside the graffitied and hollowed out building to get a sense of its future.

I worked in the R&D Tower from 1971 to 1974, rotating shift. I started in the old facility and saw the transition from the old to the new. Some very good people worked there. The mission always came first. We believed and cared.
I worked there back in 1987, about 6 months all together. I was billeted at RAF Gatow and we'd get a bus to T'berg around 5 in the morning. Glad I didn't have to walk up the hill! It is the only hill in Berlin, it is the result of all the rubble from the clean-up after the war. I can't tell you what I did there but I'm absolutely thrilled to see that the place has been turned into an art/graffiti/rave location, damn I wish I was back in Berllin lol!
Sigh! The 78th US _ASA_ Special Operations Unit, West Berlin, that actually staffed these places never gets a mention.

It’s hard to see a place where you were proud to work get destroyed by time and neglect, almost like what you did is no longer important, even though it was extremely important and crucial…
I worked on the Hill in the mid-70s. I am in contact through facebook with dozens of others who worked there at different times. We all have a special place in our hearts for that unique building and are dismayed to see it in such decayed condition. But, the fact that it does sit empty and tattered means that we were ultimately successful in our mission so its abandonment is a testament to our success. That building may seem secret and sinister, but the people who worked there believed whole-heartedly that they were on the side of good and every one of us fell in love with Berlin and its people.

I worked on the middle floor in the British section from April 1978 until May 1979. I was always under the impression that it was the highest point in Berlin, not the second highest. Anybody know what the highest was?

I didn't work on T'berg, but i did go up there on occasion to pull KP duty. My job was not performed on the Hill, so there wasn't really a reason to spend much time there. Most of the people who did work there were far from us in their jobs and location. My place of work was out in Rudow, about 15 miles away. It is a shame that they have let the place decay to that degree. Sadly, there is no trace left of two other places I worked.

Well, it's totally wrecked now + to mock it all, the municipal authorities of Berlin allowed a gay porn company to shoot a gay porn movie there in 2009....LOL...how time flies...! Has America no money to renovate/repair its damaged legacies in foreign allied NATO countries? And Trump demands more NATO money from us in Germany, ridiculous. But that's his usual meth-od, to blackmail business "partners" + now other nations in a very childish way. What will God think of him when he will finally end up in hell, if God exists at all.
It's a pretty disrespectful end to an important historical site. There are trash heaps, bottles and debris everywhere. It looks like a hell hole. Just there two days ago. Berlin has decided to waste 200 million euros to restore a monstrosity, the ICC building, while this site just falls apart.

The ICC building is contaminated with asbestos and is under historical buildings protection. When they are done wasting all that money on it, it will be used for business conferences. The Teufelsberg site, on the other hand, has much greater historical significance and a fraction of that money could make the site one that tens of thousands could enjoy. There could be exhibitions, restaurants, etc. Instead, the Federal government will just piss away 200 millon euros removing asbestos. Just seal up the ICC. It's a butt ugly eye sore of no historical consequence.

I was station here in 73 thru 76 it and worked in the isolated tower to the left near the mess hall. Duty wasn't bad.
I served there from 1979-1981, in the maintenance shop where we fixed all the cool toys. It was an amazing time.
Could be an potential Avant Guard Art Museum. Certainly seems to be headed in that direction lately.

To receive a passive signal takes a lot of area (massive antennas/networks). To emit takes a ton of juice (most likely nuclear powered source). To power this kind of operation off of the existing grid would be next to impossible.
