- While PlayStation Premium has opened up some great classics on PS4 and PS5, there's so much more missing that hooking up an old school system still has so many benefits, so here's how I get the most out of my PS2!

PS2 is my favorite console of all time. It was there through my whole childhood.
My personal favourite has to be the og xbox. Yeah it's big, but man it does so many things right. The second version of the controller feels great in the hands and it has a harddrive for save files so you don't need a memory card. But still have the option to use memory cards. Also I just prefer a majority of games on xbox to be honest.
Though I still play both consoles to this day
@@teneesh3376 Im in the same camp the xbox was all about power. It basically made the ps2 irrelevant when it came down to multi plat games all games looked and played much better on the xbox by far.
Just before xbox and ps3 introduced us to the n word
PS2 has the best games ever, I mean ever, back then developers used to experiment with games ideas, so many awesome franchise were born in PS2 era, man I really wish I had a PS2 back then but the good thing about not being up to date with gaming back then was that you would demand new stuff, father got me a sega genesis back when PS3 was new, and I enjoyed it, I didn't know what Playstation was back then so sega genesis for me was the best and newest game console, now I have a PS4 and I'm super happy
Same I'm glad i was born in the early 90s and get to experience the amazing library games for the ps2 2000-2006.
One of my favorite things about that era was if you missed out on a game for any reason, Tripple a or not. A few months down the line you would find it in a bin in a local shop for less than 20.. Over half my collection at the time came from that kind of buys
My favourite thing was that you didn't know what you were buying until you got to play It
Games were also finished when they came out, no day 1 patches
Yeah but now you can’t get dozens of games per month via 1 or 2 subscriptions
@@B.R_ and because of this you'd read the manual multiple times in the way home to hype yourself up!
It used to be the same way with Amazon prices on PS3 and PS4 games. Plenty of great AAA games were going used for 5 to 20 dollars, if you were just patient enough to wait a couple years before playing them. I was getting most of my games that way. Amazon gutted their used gaming market a few years ago though, so I just stick with digital deals and gamepass now
Honestly, if the PS5 could just play disc PS1 and 2 games, it’d be the best PS system to date. Even without 3 compatibility
FACTS
Kinda like the Series X where you can play Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox one? Lol. Sony needs to take some notes.
@@Ducking_Fustin you can’t play every game tho. If you have the right ps3 you can play every ps1-3 game. If you have a ps5 you can play every ps4 game and some ps2 and ps1 games
@@tyke2829 It has pretty widespread support for pretty much anything you would REALLY want to play. Almost all of the heavy hitters from those eras are available through gamepass.
@@tyke2829 Yeah, but those models are very prone to YLoD now because of their age.
It's honestly disgusting how we have to take all these hoops (converting PS2 ISOs to PKG is both bothersome and sometimes a downgrade such as lack of online play or simply incompatible games) just to play all of our old titles because Sony was incompetent and had to cut the PS2 hardware.
And they even got the PS5 breached because of PS2 emulation. They had 16 years to perfect software emulation yet did barely anything...fucking deserved.
The Retrotink 5x for me has been an absolutely phenomenal solution for playing my retro systems on a modern display.
I love the enormous amount of options available, especially with artificial scanlines, I especially love them when playing SNES games with the PVM style, absolutely gorgeous.
Another killer feature which makes me prefer this upscaler over others is the Motion Adaptive Deinterlacing, which can make the PS2's interlaced 480i output look almost like true progressive 480p! Shoutouts to Mike Chi for making this incredible device, and continuing to support it with updates for as long as he has
If you want even better image quality then check out GSM. Its deinterlacing is even better than the Retrotink, although game compatibility is limited.
You need freemcboot for gsm..
@@jacklancaster6927 not as a replacement for the Retrotink obviously as game compatibility is very limited
@@MichaelM28 game compatibility actually isn't that limited. nearly all my games can be able to played at 720p or 1080i non internlaced.
Is it worth spending 330 usd though? Genuine question.
it just goes too show just how long an old system can last, the PS2 was my first system i bought as a kid and i still play it too this very day from time too time;the PS2 was ahead of its time in many games and can certainly last forever if one so chooses
Maybe I'm just tripping, but I felt like I just watched a 9 minute and 53 second ad. I didn't see one clip of you actually "playing ps2".
You ain’t trippin’
Your headphones will sound much better if you pull your hat off your ears.
Man, this reminds me that i have not played on a PS2 since 2012, really takes me back now.
I love when there's people talking about Retrotinks recently, last year I was eager to get some of the retrotink products (esp. the retrotink5x pro 2nd batch) watching some videos but it really deserves to be more talked about :D
I still use my same ps2s from 18-19 years ago and this was useful in finding a way to continue to use my ps2 on new screens instead of my crt thank you!
Keep the CRT! Dude, are you crazy?
@@raverewind one day it will die
@@oversoulghost depents. I have a 1980 Sony Profell Monitor and it still holds up. You cant believe how good build CRTs can be like mine.
@@raverewind I got a Sony 970 crt and I try to take good care of it. Fingers crossed
@@oversoulghostif it does he can get it fix
The Optical out my friends and I used to record the all the radio stations from Grand Theft Auto to a MiniDisk just because we could. Good times, and so many good games. Makes me miss Twisted Metal Black, Vigilant 8 (a PS1 and Dreamcast game), and Motor Mayhem since it was a 2001 game for it... good memories.
Awesome seeing you paying homage to the ps2!!
I’m using it with an LG screen with component cables hooked up to it.
I think it’s the model that makes it work great. No lag and great visuals..
Worth trying out with your own TV
As for controllers.
I just ordered the PS2 wingman from brooks
Super versetaile and this way you can use different controllers for different games.
Great vid as always
Hope the budget tips help out any one
Spent a long time using the Defender for both PS2 and 3. Probably one of my favorite third-party controllers ever.
PS2 will always be my favorite system forever and forever
common. Just yesterday I downloaded pcsx2 remembering I loved playing ps2 and struggling to emulate it some years ago and though it should be better now. well, it is basically the same but my hardware is way better now so... yeah, GoW 2 and Black 4k 60 baby. now this video comes right in time, what a coincidence
PCSX2 is amazing and saw some real progress the past year. I can’t imagine playing on native hardware 480i after seeing these games in 4K.
I got back into playing with my old fat ps2, one thing I hated was the wired controller. I ended up finding an adapter online where I can use a ps3,4,and 5 controller for it. I’ve been using the 4 and it’s amazing. Still very clean no lag. And it’s nice having a more modern controller
As much as I love that classic PlayStation DualShock 2 controller, I agree it's very uncomfortable to play with since I have such large hands.
I use the 4 to!
Nice to see you got the Retrotink5x PRO :)
Highly recommend the RetroTink line of devices.
The Logitech wireless was my go to controller for the PS2. I haven't had my system unboxed in years. I still have a few TV with component inputs but would like to check out using the upscaler. The PS2 is one of my favorite systems of all time. Main reason I still have all my original stuff.
That controller is a lot better than the retro fighters controller
Awesome video! Lately I’ve been busy and it’s just been annoying to set up old consoles because they take up too much space. But all this stuff looks really cool, especially when newer tvs and monitors have less options.
Great video! I've considered getting a RetroTink but it seems llike you have to do a lot to get what you want out of it.
6th generation of consoles and the games are awesome! My essence of gaming, mostly represented by the ps2 and dreamcast for me
Other options for scalers are Open Source Scan Converter (OSSC), or just retro think 2x, there's even the GBSC, but you need to mod the GBSC for best results, by default it's actually not good.
Also, Brooke just released a PS1/PS2 adapter that you can plug a bunch of modern Xbox/switch/PS3/PS4/PS5/PC controllers to in wired or wireless.
My ps2 games were dbz tenkaichi 3, kingdom hearts 1 & 2, tony hawk pro skater 3, crash twinsanity, yugioh capsule monsters coliseum, atv offroad fury, hulk, sonic mega collection, and burnout 2. loved all of those games
I love kindom heart series
Mike Chi is the man!
I recently hooked up my old ps2 and to my horror I didn’t have my memory card. So what did I do? I played through the entirety of gta 3 in one sitting. It was fun, but I took a fat break from gaming as a whole after 😂
Og ps2 just looks romantic. Like a gift card from the front.
I definitely plan on getting this controller.
Recently got myself an Original Copy of Okami & Samurai Legend Musashi.
Already have an HDMI pass through adapter.
What HDMI adaptor?
8:27 "Don't even think about using autofire, or I'll know!"
this video is great. i love my PS2 and use the optical audio to play on my PC through the goxlr. My favorite thing is sharing the PS2 with my sons.
Damn good video. To the point modern upgrades. Awesome
This is such an informative and well made video! I am convinced the 5x is worth it.
Yes! Just got the green version of that controller and I love it!
Thank u my friend, will be looking into this
I bought a slim a month ago and recollected over 30 great games I'm having a blast
I've ordered a brook wingman so I can hookup my ps3 controller as most ps2 controllers today are worn in the pressure sensitivity
Feels like I haven't seen a video from you for a while. Miss you Kevin ♥️
It was my Childhood gaming when I was a Kid in the 2000s
I used the optical cable back in the day with an expensive(at the time) Pioneer digital receiver and it was pretty mind blowing at the time. The sound quality was definitely ahead of its time.
I recently picked up my first PlayStation ever. A PlayStation 3. Was able to find a 60 gig launch model in great shape so I essentially have 3 consoles in one. I’ve been loving discovering games from the ps3 era that I missed out on, but it’s also great to know I can pick up any good ps2 games for cheap and play then right through hdmi on modern setups.
Just for safety reapply the thermal paste and do a full cleaning, the BC Phat models are notorious for overheating quickily
listen to the reply you got, my friend fked up his phat by having bad ventilation and an oven of a room
I delided my system and tell ya you need heat, an extremely flat flexible strip and lots of patience to get the tops off to replace the paste. I replaced mine with thermal grizzly kryonaut extreme and the system went from jet to whisper quiet. Never hear the fan go above 25%.
@@AdamAve93 bump, wonderful w story
I have one to I have replaced the thermal paste 2 times I just play ps2 on it. I use my slim model for PS3 and PS1
Thank you for all that information
Holy Crisis! I love the PS2 I emulate it on my PC now but, you just made me realize my childhood was spent playing the Atari 2600 and the original NES. Christ I am old 😂.
I've still got a 2005 45in LG plasma. Has 3 component inputs. Which I'm so grateful for with my old consoles.
Awesome video! 😁if and when time permits for you to do so do you think you could film a tutorial on how to hook up the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless to the PS2?
My setup is similar to his & I love it ^^
I haven't tried the new Steelseries Arctis Nova Pro with the PS2 yet, but I don't doubt it'll sound excellent
Thx mate, just got my PS2 today and was thinking about to play wireless on it. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I just love the Playstation 2 n 1 plus the cube loading sound is just amazing to my ears
I still have the PS2 original and the slim. I’m definitely going to look into this wireless controller and headset.
WOW😃This remind me of some interesting childhood memories
i have the exact same setup. works awesome on my OLED!
Literally past week I was thinking about getting a Defender Controller and reviving my PS2. Talking about timing.
Appreciate this 😎
Thank you for the recommendations. I do feel they are more on the expensive side though. I do with these upscalers could be more affordable
Love the Ps2 still playing mine with my other retro consoles next to my New Ps5 👍👍
i still own a very nice and in great shape sony trinitron CRT, but honestly. in my opinion since i got the steam deck, thats is the best way to play PS2.
That Defender controller is GREAT!!! It has proper, pressure sensitive buttons...
i hope you do one for the best way to play a PS3. And Wii. I still got both! i lost my PS2 slim. That was another one that was dope!
I ues my PS2 on a ODV GBS-C and it has been the happiest I have been with the image quality on my modern TV.
hideo kojima a true digital artist even for the consoles time what he managed to do with metal gear still amazes me i also brought the tactial training game that he released
Black frame insertion does not decrease lag; it reduces motion blur. If anything, it increases lag slightly
#1) What made you go for the RetroTink over the OSSC?
#2) A lot of people (including myself) used the optical out on the PS2 to transfer CD audio to MiniDisc (many, it not most, portable MiniDisc players had optical inputs).
the ossc is not very good for ps2.
Love that playstation light you have behind you. I own one. I have several authentic neon signs, but the ps light is my favorite piece. Also retrotink 5x is the best scaler out there hands down.
For audio try the schiit fully 4e, it’s amazing and the audio is great
And for controllers, Brook just came out with their wingman converter adapter
I haven't turned on my PS5 since April of this year when I finished playing Elden Ring, and I've probably put 300 hours on my PS2 since then. I actually have an earlier OLED TV with built in component ports, but my OSSC makes the console look FANTASTIC over HDMI.
weirdly i did exactly the same thing after eldin ring lol i went back and played fatal frame 1-3
The Video of my PS2 is hooked up to my projector (kind of a crappy one, but it's fun), while the sound is going to my PC for its surround sound. So much fun gaming that way.
Just out of curiosity, if you don’t mind my asking when you’re using the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless with the PS2 via the Optical outport do you select PS4 or AUX as the Source? 🎧🎮
Also, do you have it connected to a USB/AC power source? 🔌🔋
Its 2022 so you can use HDD now instead of adding unnecessary wear on a 20 year old optical drive.
My setup is similar although not as premium in terms of video output
I used the Kaico hdmi box, HDD sata adaptor, 500gb HD, freemcboot memory card.
For audio i use a small DAC to convert the optical output to analog and connect into my two channel stereo receiver
Same wireless gamepad as in the video
you can you just a slim for DVD/CD's, (especially if you hack the system) that laser is pretty much solid and never really breaks. i think FAT laser maybe reads faster, but its breaks down. happend a few months a ago, now i can pretty much only use HHD and freemcboot unless i pull out a slim or fix the FAT laser.
I wish I grew up with a PS2, unfortunately I didn't, so thank the emulators for existing. A big chunk of PS2's library already had PC ports too or got one years later, so I'm using emulators just for the exclusives.
I play Balders Gate 1 and 2 almost exclusively on my ps2. Sharpness isn't really an issue as much as contrast. Using a game stop adapter the bright parts hurt your eyes and the dark places( dungeons and forests are almost black. Can't get the TV or console to hit a happy medium. 😮
Use an HDMI Audio inserter, should allow you to hook up the optical cord with the hdmi video out from the retrotink. Hope that helps dude.
This is a good update my man thanks
It's funny Spawnwave just did a PS2 hard drive peripheral setup update what are the odds you guys are thinking along the same brain wave pattern! ! !
I've been searching for a quality third party Playstation controller for so long. Why has no one told me about Retro Fighters before?
Can you plug multiple consoles using a switcher into the Retrotink? VERY interested in getting this!
Ps2 had a rlly good library. Burnout, need for speed, test drive unlimited 1, call of duty, Metal Gear, Rayman, Daxter, Tony Hawk, The Simpsons hit and run, GTA, Metal Gear, Battlefront, Silent Hill, Rachet and Clank, Kingdom Hearts, Persona 3/FES, Time Splitters, Rachet and Clank, God of war. Those are some of the best ps2 games.
Don't forget some of the tom clancys games. Like splinter cell (a few of the splinter cell games)
I personally prefer the hd retrovision component cables to get the very best picture possible. Great video though!
You should check out the Brook PS2 to PS3/4 adapter! It lets you use wireless PS3 and 4 controllers on the PS1 and 2
Welcome back!
I've been really enjoying the 8bitdo ps2 adapter in conjunction with my ps5 controller. It works perfectly, and I don't notice any latency compared to an old Bluetooth ps2 controller. I plan to get a brook adapter for player 2 or potentially another 8bitdo and shell swap the controller with a crystal blue extreme rate shell. Maybe a more expensive option but it's a fun project I've been working on.
Friday night when everyone going outside drinking n doing cool stuffs one dude sit on his balcony rolled a big fat joint n smoke it all alone staring at the moon n starts after the sesh he pull his ps2 from his locker with a brand new original ds2 controller ,a 250 hardisk with fully loaded games like metal gear solid, black, gta all series ,bully ,resident evil, downhill domination, all nfs ,all silent hillss, tekken 5, moto gps ect n chill in gta vice city high af till 3am damn ps2 is one trippy console
This setup is cool. I'd switch out that Retro Fighters controller for a Brook adapter and use a Dualshock 4.
I’m pretty certain BFI actually adds latency and but helps with motion
I just got my 6th or 7th Ps2 lmao building back up my library but this time I wanna get into different games.
PS2. It's the most "Greatest Hits" games I've ever purchased for a console😄. I love the PS2. Also a lot of my library is pre owned from Gamestop.
Love retro era content. I'm using the mclassic on for my Wii.
Don't use the mclassic it crushes shadow detail and ruins the colour and contrast
@@MichaelM28 might just be a sugar pill for me lol
It’s funny watching this video shortly after watching you try to sell me Xboxes from Best Boy, not a sleight or burn, you gotta make that money, I just think it’s hilarious.
Now, back to the subject at hand is that I was always interested in the PS2 because of its exclusive display but just due to life stuff I could only have Nintendo consoles growing up and I’ve been using a very barebones upscale for my GameCube but who knows maybe I’ll find something like this RetroTink someday.
If I had an old tube TV again I'd be playing ps2 all the time
PS2 waa one of the best consoles and it had so many iconic games.
It's my all time favorite. I'd sell my PS3 launch for one if I didn't like playing my PS3 games as well. I have a PS2 and screen in my explorer how much I love it and will keep it if I upgrade vehicles.
this was my first online experience some tank game with few servers i could join
My Gf, found a PS2 at her job. Someone donated it. I was so happy! All i had to buy was a new control and an hdmi conveter that was like 12 bucks on amazon. It looks great. Im 16 all over again, hahaha
Especially playing GTA3, 2K5, Tony Hawk, and more, haha, the best system!
Ill cry if i hear the original Playstation starting sound
I found mine in the attic but it was broke
I think black frame insertion is for motion clarity. Not latency. It’s real nice to have for stuff like sonic.
PS2 was a DVD player and your game console during the 2000’s but these upgrades make the PS2 still useful in 2022
I would never go back to those old ass t.v. that high pitch frequency drives mad
In my Case, i use PS2 component cable (R/G/B) on my HD CRT and it looks amazing.
Should I get a CRT to try it out?
I'm the same way but I also use the defender for my ps3. It's seemless turning off the ps2 then turning on the ps3 it doesn't even have to think about it , it just works
i love that controller theyre really doing something cool that brand
I would love to be able to play classic PS1/PS2 games that I missed out on the first time, but I’m begging for owning a refurbished PS2 and accessories like these. Maybe some day I’ll own them.
What’s stopping you? Theyre cheap as shit
Ps2 is really not very expensive. You don’t really need a refurbished because they were built so nicely many of them are not broken. Get one local pickup and you’ll get it cheap.
I remember spending my Summer Job money on a PS2. Worth it!
Favorite console of all time would have been the PS3 for me if it didnt remove PS2 backwards compatibility. So PS2 is my favorite of all time for sure. Once my 60 GB PS3 ylod and I was stuck with a slim I didn't like it nearly as much. It was nice having 3 generations of games on one platform but Sony had to ruin that.
