Should You Eat 3 Meals a Day? (Your Mom Might be Upset)

  • So many things we are taught to believe in society are based on nothing. Based on no facts, no research, and often not even on common sense. Eating 3 meals a day is one of those things.
The human body (and it's DNA) has been on this planet in our current form for 100's of thousands of years, only during the past few hundred years have we felt compelled to eat "3 squares" a day.
By eating the proper things, at the proper times, we can optimize our health and increase our longevity without spending 1000's on pills, powders, and other products. Mimicking our ancestors eating patterns, without encountering the dangers they faced, will give our human bodies exactly what they need to improve and heal. So the question of "Should You Eat 3 Meals a Day" is very valid...

Only 2 people know what Im doing and are hugely supportive. Ive learnt over the years when it comes to eating plans its best not to say anything. Plus Im not interested in naysayers of my successful meal plan. This works! Its great that Im losing weight but the real benefits to me are clear fired up brain and the fact I now have my thumbs back. They have been so sore for so long that at times I shed tears. The PAIN has gone!. Simply gone. I have full movement in them.
Im an artist and Ive just signed up for my first online show in 7 years.
This is my 4th week on keto. It works for ME. And Im not interested in what anyone says about what Im doing if they arent supportive. 😆

This is SO TRUE. I never talk about it. I’m almost irritated when somebody makes comments about what I’m eating not more than an hour after they’ve asked me if I’ve lost weight. That’s another thing. If somebody asks if I’ve lost weight I say “I don’t know I don’t weigh myself.” Not interested in educating every person I talk to after arguing with them.

Thumbs up! At 68, my thumbs also have been sore. With me, it's the basal joints, the CMC. The doctor said "It's just wear, you've worked with your hands so long..." Take Aleve. Well, now it's getting much better on a low carb keto diet, along with very marked diabetes improvement and 50 pounds of weight loss. I'm of Northern European ancestry. You could surmise that they ate intermittent meals and meat. It works. Also, I should have said less. My sister is a vegan and berates me for eating "that awful diet" all the time! She goes on not only about it being harmful to me, but does the guilt thing about how I'm "harming the environment," yada yada. I shouldn't have told her!

I think a lot of people (myself included) have a hard time discerning between "eating because you're hungry" and "eating because you're supposed to be hungry." A lot of times, hunger sensations are a Pavlovian response to whatever time of day it is and not because you are actually hungry. It's a well ingrained habit that's hard to break. I'm also not a fan of the notion that certain foods are to be eaten only for breakfast, dinner or supper. I'm sure we've all heard people (perhaps yourself) say they're having "breakfast for supper" or thought it odd when someone has a roasted chicken thigh and a spinach and kale salad at breakfast. Why? Because we've been trained all our lives that certain foods are to be eaten only at certain times of day. It's really quite fascinating.

I've noticed kids are a lot better about this, my daughter asks for things like meatballs or ham and veggie sandwiches for breakfast (on LC bread) and we oblige. Virtually everything other than egg dishes that are "Breakfast food" are pastries, sweets and sugar.

Followed his teachings for 8 years and hardly lost any weight. Now I'm down 14 lbs. and still have things to nail down better. So thrilled!! Thanks Doctor Berry!

After cancer and treatment,2 years cancer free, I have virtually no appetite. I started ketogenic diet for the benefits I read in cancer prevention. I am so tired of my children pushing food at me -eat momma eat. I love how I feel eating keto. I could live on bullet proof coffee however. My question: should I worry about a calorie count, variety, protein vs fat, etc... My spirit did a happy dance when I heard "one meal a day". Just a little guidance needed I guess. Thank you for your videos. They are truly a tremendous help.

I am a severe celiac and I did lose on very low carb and no foods that made me sick. I found I could eat bananas and i went nuts on doing so. I gained a ton. I did go back to low carb but I did not lose. Butter I ate a ton of. I guess I can't handle milk stuff yet. Eggs made me sick too. Most foods did too. But I have been eating only 2 meals a day for years. Only when I went carby I started to eat a lot more. Today I stopped buying the butter. I will eat some treat once in a while but I am basically back to how I was eating when I lost all that way but with more variety of veggies and chicken.

Great Video. No audiosync problems now. I have been doing Keto since summer last year, lost about 20 pounds. Got stuck, low carb diet lost it's magic. Now on track again with keto and 1 meal a day. Lost another 10 pounds in the last 6 weeks.
Coworkers think I'm crazy. So does my wife. She says she can't live on 1 meal, has to have 3 meals a day, with snacks in between. Fortunately she is eating low carbs meals and snacks. Says she needs the meals and snacks or she has glucose problems and fatique and nausia, but glucosetests reveil she has no bloodsugar issues at all. Well, maybe it takes time to see the light.

I have been doing keto and intermittent fasting for 23 days now and only eat between 5pm and 1 or 2 am 1st meal is large ,2nd is smaller , with a bulletproof coffee is needed for fat (I have weird hours lol) I am rarely hungry and have no urge to overeat , In fact now that my body is used to this, I sometimes have a hard time even eating 2 meals to get 1200 to 1300 calories a day . I have 150 lbs to lose by the way , so I have a very long road ahead of me , But the keto lifestyle is totally doable and I do not think I will have any problems sticking with this for like . I have no clue how much I have lost already , but I feel great and can tell I'm shrinking . My husband has noticed also , and although he is not eating keto he has cut a lot of carbs out of his diet too no more snacking on chips cookies etc and no more breads, pasta, rice, potatoes, or sodas , He can quite give up his juice , fruits and flavored yogurts yet I have faith he will be able to someday though lol . I am excited to see where I am in a year :)

have 180 to lose (weight gain from drugs for a brain condition ..ugg). Anyway chin up, I get 1050 -1100 a day in a meal - just really focus on nutrient dense foods with a eye to your macros. teens aren't adults and they are growing and growing fast. worry about the junk food and just try hard to steer them to eating fat healthy stuff. it's normal for kids to graze throughout the day. I grew up on a garden. I'd be playing and in the middle stop and pull up a couple of carrots. or would be out riding and stop to eat some black berries on the trail, the horses loved them too.

It depends on how physically active you are. Most people worked a lot harder decades ago. When I was a kid I was outside all day playing and exploring most kids today rarely get off their asses. Hell most adults rarely get off their asses unless it's to get something to eat. Eating has become a recreational activity.

I was a pretty good mom, but at 64 I regret hassling my son and daughter to eat breakfast before school. Neither one wanted it and I just parroted what I was told. Shoot I used to eat like 6-8 tiny meals (sugar loaded crap) a day. I started low carb 17 months ago and finally jumped on the IF bandwagon these past 6 weeks. Most days 20:4 others 16:8, I haven't seen much improvement yet..other than saving money on food. Which really makes me happy. That first week was hard because I was sooo cold and shaky before my eating window opened. I also started adding loads of low carb green veggies when I started the IF. I really wish I had known about this way back when I had 1st started low carb. Better late than never.. During my fast I stick to water and pink salt. If I do get the shaky feeling I'll have a warm cup of black coffee and that seems to help. I have checked my blood sugar during those hours and lowest is 80. Appreciate all the info. from a local Tennessean.

Finally a doctor that agrees with me. I'm a 67 y/o Caucasian male. For around 50-55 years of my life I have only had one meal per day. I've had doctors try and convince me that I needed to eat "three balanced nutritional meals per day". And all stated that breakfast was the most important. I have my one meal ideally between 2-4:00pm and I do eat a granola bar at bedtime for a snack. If I get hungry, which doesn't happen often throughout the day I will drink a bottle of water or eat an oat granola bar or maybe (and I do know this is bad) a sweet pastry or candy bar. I'm basically the same size as I was in high school and have few health issues. Thanks for agreeing with me doc. And btw, sometimes I fast for a complete trip around the sun.

The food takes a while to get to where it needs to go to. Within a half hour at the most I feel better. In Okinawa they have a saying, to always leave the table before you are completely full, or in other words, always leave the table a little bit hungry.

sure. This isn't inconsistent with once or twice a day diet. It's pretty flexible. Eat one huge meal a day or a good size meal for lunch and alight snack before nightfall.

My problem is an eating three meals a day. It’s affording three meals a day.
Because living with my parents, I can afford one meal provided by my parents and one meal that is a snack
But once I start living on my own
My lifestyle will literally be Mr. noodles juice in the odd sausage, or I will have juice for breakfast juice for lunch and Mr. noodles for supper and sausage once a week
Or I can cut up the sausage into seven sections, and one section a day
I live in North America I should not be suffering from food scarcity

After being on keto for about 6 weeks I naturally found myself doing bulletproof coffee in the morning, about 7 or 8 hours later getting a little snack and then having 1 real meal at traditional dinner time. Kind of funny how our body knows what to do if we feed it the right stuff!

😂 kinda depends on what your job is. I have a very physical job lifting all night and I need a meal to start my day. We've had numerous people each year hospitalized from heat exhaustion, and they ALL had one thing in common. They didn't eat before work. Most claim to be drinking enough water. And then when lunch comes after 5 hours I'm so hungry. And when I get home 5 hours later I'm really hungry again. I then lift weights and then have another big meal. I don't think i could go without eating three. But i don't eat a lot of carbs

We treat malnutrition commonly - for fad diets - at our medical clinic. Fad diets are big biz for us, and we don't *want* that business! Talk with your Doctor to see how long you ca diet to loose weight, and how to make sure you get your RDA of things your body needs. There are lots of "skinny" skeletons in graves. Hint: several small meals / snacks per day - as well as moderate to vigorous exercise [ask your Doctor first!) - is the best (and most natural) way. Lastly, ladies - weigh yourself in kg (kilograms) - you will feel much better about yourself right off the bat. (1 kg = 2.2 pounds) Don't cook your vegetables - eat them fresh (live enzymes). You will find that the absence of meat will help you the most. (I am a vegetarian, and feel great) Stay *away* from all fast food. _Never_ go to fast food ... .the nitrates are off the charts. Also, look up "Supersize Me". /Yetunde out

Nobody has time to prep 3-6 meals a day. When ends up happening is you either end up buying food outside or packaged junk. With 1 meal a day, you actually have enough time prep something nutritious that you made yourself.

Normally I eat two meals a day, normally skipping lunch. I’m fine on only dinner. (Type 1 diabetic since 1970.)
There was a lecturer at the University of London, maybe 80 or more years ago, who normally had one meal a day at his club, a dinner, then lectured all evening. Seemed to do well on it.

The old recommendations for three meals and three snacks for type one diabetics came about to work (very crudely) using one or two doses of long acting insulin per day. Many type ones were on two doses of lente or one dose of protamine zinc. These regimes are no longer used. One or two doses of basal insulin to cover secretion of glucoses from the liver, plus fast acting doses to cover carbs in meals are the norm nowadays.

Dr Berry, I need you to answer a question that I have please! A friend of mine had her thyroid removed due to cancer. And she’s overweight, feeling sick, and wanted a change. When she heard of the keto diet she accepted with open arms and was ready to embrace. However her endocrinologist completely prohibited her to do it, claiming that because she does not have a thyroid she needed a regular intake is carbs.. that this diet is very dangerous for her condition, and that she absolutely needed to have a dose of “sweets” every now and then so a wave of depression wouldn’t come over her since she’s prone to have one because of her lack of thyroid. So.. I kid you not Dr, that’s the words that a dr told her.. please help!

I’m 63. Was doing keto. Lost weight I pretty much wanted. 5-8 pounds. Started carnivore 1 week ago to try to heal. I do have 11/2 cups of unsweetened almond milk a day though and sip a bit on a zevia ginger ale. Bad stomach and can’t take any meds. Live in tons of pain. Oh, and I was doing 2 organic Michelob ultra a day, but having one now. So, close to complete carnivore. Eating twice a day. Fasting 16-18 hours. So, I’m still losing weight. 1 pound since yesterday. I’ve lost 4 pounds this first week. I’m 125.2. I don’t even know what age I last weighed that. Question…..will your body stop losing when it feels it’s at optimum? I’m hearing I’m getting too thin. I’m 5’9. I want to keep going to try to get healing for neuropathy, arthritis, allergies, etc……I have chronic Lyme for most my life without knowing. It’s not showing in blood right now, but they come out of hiding if I stop wearing my Lyme energy patches and stop doing oxygen. I’m gonna do ivermectin to eradicate it after the full moon passes. That’s when they hide. Anyway, will I get unhealthy thin? Or just keep going. Ty so much!

Dr Berry I was al your videos and love your chatty style. I’ve read a lot about eating once a day and most days I fast for 22 hours . All the research by Valter Longo Satchin Panda and Dr Fung indicates A narrow eating window on a fmd or Keto. I just worry about gallstones. There are several physicians in the family but none of them approve of fasting nonetheless I’ve been on one meal a day since January 1st and love it. My one meal consists of low protein tons of veggies and some lentils dal s etc.
