- What would my life and the world look like if Black Trans* Lives mattered? Race, gender, social class, and disability all intersect to shape Black Trans* lives. How would social institutions, such as education, law, healthcare, religion, and family be different? Dr. Dafina-Lazarus (D-L) Stewart (he and they) is professor in the School of Education and Co-Coordinator of Student Affairs in Higher Education and affiliated faculty in the Center for Women’s Studies and Gender Research at Colorado State University. Over the course of his 18-year faculty career, he has focused most intently on the history and philosophy of higher education, as well as institutional systems and structures that affect the postsecondary experiences, growth and development, as well as success of racially minoritized and queer and trans* students. D-L examines these topics through intersectional, critical, and poststructural frameworks that incorporate ableism, religious hegemony, and classism alongside racism, patriarchy, as well as anti-queer/trans antagonism. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
the problem with all of this is that its based on feelings rather than fact
Its based on medical fact, being against it is feelings
@@Raven_Fable What medical facts?
Lmfaooooo
Thank you, Dr. Stewart, for such a powerful, poetic talk and such a clear demand for solidarity and action. I stand with you in this fight for all of our humanity.
Nice comment, solidarity is beautiful. Hope you have a nice day.
Herp derp

So woke
Why must Trans people announce they are trans or make it a point soon as you meet them. I really want to understand this because it makes me feel a certain way then when it is pushed on me... for lack of better explanation. I feel like I have to treat you differently or applaud you almost as if you r looking for approval or justification. That is what bothers me... if we get along... it's because we have a connection. If we dont, it ok... we go separate ways. But since I know your trans, you made it such a point to tell me, I feel pressured that if I dont like you as a person, you can say I don't like you cause of your gender identity... and that's ridiculous.
We get hate when we do/n't come out. A lose lose situation. We can talk about it.
If we talk about it, we're pushing an agenda, if we dont talk about it, we're not being honest or tricking others
@@farstar5578 what I fear when someone is trans, is when talk to them or rather accept what ever gender they are I don't want it to come off as if I like them.
@@SuperJoobers coming off as if you like someone on a friendship level or basic human level isn't the worst thing to have someone construe your respect as. Not wanting someone to misconstrue respect as romantic pursuit is understandable. I think it could be helpful to consider, as to what the original poster alluded to, the way people often treat trans individuals is binary; many people get pushed to the sidelines and discarded because they're trans; alternatively, people won't interact with them out of fear, even fear that they'll come off as discriminatory when that isn't the intention. Or there are other people who are wholeheartedly supportive and accepting. But it's very either/or for many. Many people either have someone wanting to be their friend and accepting them or wanting nothing to do with them because they're trans, and this stems from the reality that getting basic acceptance and treatment like anyone else isn't the standard yet. It's okay to respect someone and their identity as a human without necessarily getting along with that person, the same way you might respect someone from a different culture and their experience without necessarily getting on with the individual. When someone has a lot of discrimination thrown their way, though, it's most common they'll wonder whether that's the reason or not. A good cure to this is being informed, respectful, and communicating. Especially communicating with different people about their experiences because, inevitably, there is going to be some individual you like more than another. This shows that you are an ally and that your actions are not motivated by transphobia. Fearing someone wants a friendship with you shouldn't keep you from respecting their identity; that fear is what perpetuates situations like what everyone here mentioned. Ultimately, it comes down to the fact that trans people consistently get treated differently, and that changes one person at a time. Remember, on an individual basis, personal boundaries are always something that you can set, just like with any person
@@farstar5578 you don't get hate. you get disapproval. Big difference. Just because I disagree with how you look and how you carry on with yourself doesn't mean I hate, I means I disapprove with your lifestyle and have every right to feel that way!
@@alginyesdisapprove yet don’t know the person. Who are you Jesus? You basically saying you have judgement. Have fun getting into Heaven with that.
whats the * for in the title
Usually people say it when they eddit a message.
Edit*
from what i remember, the asterisk signifies an extension of what it means to be trans (nonbinary, genderfluid, etc.)

@@cindyqueen7228 Aww, that cute, you can't form an actual argument so you just call someone a bigot. Typical libtard.
This individual, literally said nothing for 15 minutes.
IQ < 80
Literally giving people a job for their identity, kind of embarrassing for the person

What does it teach in college, a subject that requires no education or expertise?
You obviously never mastered expertise in grammar. So I'm certain that you are a bad judge to evaluate college subjects.
You clearly have no idea what you are talking about, he’s not made any errors in his speech.
Higher education and student affairs, is a masters program and can turn into a PHD program. I’m confused on what you brought up education. Do you care to expand on your comment?
It's just sad really only GOD knows.
