Fun fact: Steve Carrell and his character won this film the GLAAD LGBTQ Media Award for Outstanding Film the year after Brokeback Mountain. It was so rare to have a gay supporting character (or a Steve Carrell character for that matter) taken 100% seriously as a person and not made into a joke that this film whose plot has almost nothing to do with sexuality still became an LGBTQ classic.

Even with the dance in a way. They were stripper moves don with su much innocence because she didn't know that anything was wrong. She didn't understand what the big deal was because she knows nothing about sex. Lol! So it was still so innocent.

Watching this again years later, I can see how they purposefully did this. Olive's performance was no more inappropriate than the other girls' yet it wasn't "okay" because it didn't conform with the standard.

It's SO GOOD. I mean, you have these actual children in tiny bikinis with tons of makeup, strutting with their hips out, etc., but it's Olive's goofy dance that upsets everyone. And her interaction with Miss California is so cute.

Re: the lack of suicide talk, that is what happens in real life. If someone tries to unalive themselves, when they return to the family/society, it is a seriously taboo topic except in support groups or in therapy. That they talked about it at all was because Olive asked about "the accident." If the adults had led the conversation, it would have been hidden forever. It's a tender topic, but one that should be talked about - with the person's permission, of course.

    • @BlackCampariBlue
      @BlackCampariBlue Рік тому +3

100% agree! It's a pity that people don't talk about it, as it's totally fine to be uncomfortable with a highly emotional and sensitive topic like that - but avoiding it won't help or might make things even harder for the person who made the attempt, as disclosure is an important part in working through mental problems and the shame surrounding it.
Also, as a psychotherapist in training: It's fine to ask people you have a hunch with or who you know are depressed straight out whether they have suicidal thoughts. Often, they will answer honestly and won't feel worth for you asking (if you do it in a sensitive and caring way). They might even be glad that someone looks out for them and cares, and chances are that they will feel more comfortable reaching out whenever shit does hit the fan.
Warning signs for suicidal ideations might be:
      - person who was behaving very depressed for a time all of a sudden is unexplainably cheery (as many feel relief when they decide to take their own lifes)
      - person starts wrapping things up, such as finding a new owner for his/her dog, canceling contracts, ...
      - it's especially alerting when someone talks about concrete suicidal plans, e.g. how or when the person wants to do it. Someone mentioning suicide should be taken seriously in every situation though and this should be followed up with the appropriate support and/or actions
Please look out for each other

One underrated moment in an already underrated movie is when the doctor tells the family the grandpa had died and Frank comforts Sheryl. He sees her and the rest of the family grieving, which probably gave him something to reflect on after his suicide attempt

the thing i remember my mom saying to me most when we watched this movie is “look at how cute she is” (about olive). turns out, that is the focus of the movie. lots of other shit happens. but none of it taints olive’s innocence (which sets the tone of the movie). watching as an adult still has that vibe of “things going over your head” when ur a child

I had a car once where something broke inside the steering wheel and every time you turned the wheel, the horn would honk. So I just pulled the fuses for the horn and the airbag. I wish they would've thought to pull the fuse for the horn in this movie, takes 2 seconds.

About 25 years ago I had a 1971 VW Squareback that had that same short in the electrical horn circuit. One time i went over a speed bump in front of the mall and it started honking and squealing just as three cholos were crossing in front of me… lol. I’m just shaking my head, apologizing, and pointing at the wheel like an idiot. Hahaha.

Funny about Olive’s question about there being a Heaven, Greg Kinnear (Dad) played in a movie about the existence of Heaven after his child medically dies and comes back.

Frederick Nietzsche is a German philosopher from the 19th century. My philosophy professor (Who also loves this movie) used to refer to him as the father of existentialism. So Dwayne takes a vow of silence inspired by Nietzsche’s theory of übermensch, A Person Who seeks to evolve to a higher, more powerful, and better Version of themselves so they create their own moral codes and rules which they consistently Live by. Fun fact the Nazi party took this theory and created a racial version which became a philosophical foundation for the parties ideas.

Abigale Breslin was nominated for an Oscar but she didn’t win. Alan Arkin did win the Oscar for his performance though. I think the movie won for best screenplay as well.
