I love how there's not only relief in their voices. As a kid, they do not fully understand the extend of what they went through. I feel the kids' anger and frustration thinking that the dad left them to find Lucas (and mom) while Lucas "looks absolutely ok." It's like.. "thank goodness you are ok. where the heck were you? Why didn't you come to us sooner?" Absolutely fabulous movie and directing of actors, especially the young ones
I cry so much at this one every time! The real life woman this is based on is amazing…she wrote about how she should have died that day, and there is no reason other than luck that she didn’t. She talks about how every day since this is a gift and borrowed time. Her perspective is so inspiring.
Nothing in this life is by luck , We are all tested in different ways. And it was meant she was going to live, Her story on earth was not done yet. But it do not make it less horrible to go through and the pain is still there. But when we are born the day we will leave this earth is already written. We just do not know when and how. Which we are not suppose to know.

I went through a bad car accident, died 3 times during it and got a spinal cord injury and a dislocated ankle as well as a small concussion but something is not done with me yet and it saved me. Life has been super hard since it and it’s been hard to stay positive but I don’t dislike life anymore that’s for sure
I am very happy for her. I did not like that Hollywood white washed her story, though. That woman and her family were brown, and they were not an all-white family like they were portrayed here. That really bothered me. I know it’s typical in the industry.
"How many people died?" "I dunno, I would guess probably at least 5-600..." oh my sweet summer child... Over a quarter of a million people died in this tsunami. 227,000+. The death toll and destruction is literally something you can't even properly wrap your head around, it is mind boggling. The fact that all 5 members of this one family survived, let alone the 2 very young children, is absolute insanity.
We lost around 530 Swedes alone, one of the worst events in our history. Basically everyone knew someone who was there when it happened, my aunt managed to survive luckily. Nothing compared to the locals but for such a small country we lost a lot. I was 8 back then and I remember how massive it was, sorta felt like our version of 9/11 where it's the only thing ppl talked about, it was on every frontpage/news channel for weeks. Everyone knew someone they couldn't get a hold of, we held silent minutes and memorials in school for ppl who lost their relatives.
As someone who survived this tsunami I think the movie showed such a realistic view of how it was. How the tsunami itself isn't the end of the hardship and you have to try and survive after as well in a hostile landscape. The terror of not knowing where your loved ones are. Everything is destroyed, all the infrastructure gone and many people were stranded on small islands not knowing how to get out. Injured people left to nothing but kind natives who just lost everything but still gave so much. No food, no money, no roads, no boats. Finally being rescued from the catastrophe site but just ending up in an overfilled hospital with most of their supplies gone, tons of bodies everywhere and just hearing the screams from people having procedures done without anasthesia or from people who lost loved ones.
I'm sorry u went through something like that, I can't imagine the trauma this cause on someone! Hope u know how strong u are and hope you recovered physically and mentally well! 💜
And your description is also very accurate. I have been called in for disaster relief through Fema a few times. Got licensed just after this tsunami hit to be just some kind of relief for these situations. :/
One thing that always gets me about this movie is Lucas' reactions to seeing his mom so messed up in the hospital. There is something so terrifying about being a kid and watching the person who has an almost godlike position in your life completely break down. That's the person who takes care of you, and having those roles reversed is super traumatic.
It's nowhere near the same but I was 18 the first time my mom woke up after a seizure. She was absolutely messed up, she couldn't remember where she worked and her thoughts kept looping. I can't wake up before her without fearing she'll wake up like that again. Seeing medical emergencys in family is TERRIFYING
Also too, the mom in the movie is a physician. So that kind of adds another layer to it. Like imagine you’re used to your parent knowing how to take care of your illnesses, what to do when you’re physically hurt, when you need to go to the doctor, and then this kind of stuff happens. My mom is a nurse and it was definitely weird having that role reversal at one point in my life and see her in pain.
@@keetahbroughyes it is. Whether one steps up or not. First responders and civilians step up all the time and are scarred for life. Take the Chris Watts case where they had to retrieve the girls from the oil tanks, I heard those first responders were out of their minds after that and needed intense therapy. Think about all the defectives, cops, ambulance and firefighter folks, doctors, nurses and medical examiners they are all step up and speak of the horrors they’ve seen. Most talk about therapy, some turn to drinking, others have to emotionally detach themselves from their work to cope.
What got me was watching the mother and the son just quickly let go of their "safe" place immediately when they saw/heard each other. They were not focused on their own safety but the other's.
I still remember reading the story of model Petra Nemcova, who was also in Thailand with her boyfriend when the tsunami hit. She sustained multiple injuries and clung to a tree for hours in order to survive, but unfortunately her boyfriend died in the disaster. Natural disasters cause such profound loss and devastation, but people's resiliency and ability to overcome tragedy is truly amazing and inspiring.
My mom took us to the movies to see a rom-com called impossible love or something like that . So, the movie begins and my dad and I were like "yaay cool family vacation" and then this giant wave comes out of nowhere and all this terrible things are happening, im sobbing my eyes out and im like "mom.. i dont think we are in the right room".
I can't even find a movie with a title like "Impossible Love" that came out that year. What do you wanna bet the titles weren't even similar and y'all just walked into the totally wrong room even though the movie had a completely different title 😂
Yeah, but he is right. Nearly a quarter of a million people perished, and these two little boys didn't even have a bruise or a scratch. Little kids really have guardian angels. The whole family got off extremely lightly, Dad and Lucas only receiving some bruises and cuts. Only Mom got hit really hard, way harder than shown in the movie. She spent a year in the hospital, had 16 major surgeries, and lost part of her leg.
my mom’s best friend was on his honeymoon in thailand when the tsunami hit, and watching my mom fall apart and call anyone she could to try and find him was so painful. thankfully he and his wife went up to the mountains the day before, so they were safe, but with the chaos that followed, it took a week to finally hear from them. i was only 9, but i still remember everything so vividly.
Ewan McGregor broke me with that phone call scene. Years later my coworker and I were discussing movies and I suggested this one. I told her about how that scene was so heartbreaking to me and she looked at me and said. " You're crying right now!" And I was. My eyes were swimming when thinking of it two years after.
This film actually hits so hard knowing it’s a true story. I was sobbing throughout Tom Holland performance at his young age truly showing his talent I have seen him in the devil all the time as well but this performance was just different. This movie truly solidified my fear of tsunamis a great reaction as usual
every time i rewatch this film it reminds me of that guy’s raw talent. this had to be one of the most emotionally demanding and draining performances for a child actor of all time and imo he blew everyone else away. and i have a deep respect for the actors who played his parents, but my eyes are always drawn to that kid’s face and how he’s just. acting. not an actual survivor. incredible. can’t wait to see his future oscar-winning performance.
I know this is a traumatic movie but I actually love seeing you guys be vulnerable, it’s really nice to see because men usually act tough and strong. I mean who wouldn’t cry for what happened to all those people, it was terrible. Edit: btw 275,000 people were killed across 14 countries and 2 continents. It’s awful

My friend survived this as a kid. He had to wade through dead bodies for 2 or 3 days. Him and his twin and their parents survived but it had a huge effect
This movie terrified and hit hard for me. My parents and my two siblings were there in 2003, where the tsunami hit in 2004. My brother's name is Luke. And I grew up in Japan so tsunamis were already a fear for me.
My great aunt was there and we couldn't reach her for days, but apparently a tour guide saved her life by guiding her up a "mountain" when it happened. Without the locals who knew what tsunamis were she would have been dead. It is crazy that basically the word tsunami was completely unknown in the west before this.
Many people that got under the water and survived said it was like being in a washing machine, You had no control. And there was 2 waves. In Sweden there was a lot of children that returned without parents, and parents returned with no children. I remember when this happened, I broke your heart. And for people that lived in this Area , they could not even fly home , They lost family members plus homes . Most Swedish People that died , died in Kao Lak. (sorry if I spell it wrong) Daniel was actually a Swedish Boy. And when you ask How Daniel ended up there, people got separated. One mother was separated from her husband and had to hold on to both her children in the water at the same time she hold on to a a tree , the problem was that she knew that there was no way she could hold on to the tree and at the same time her children, She tried but the water was to strong. So she had to let one child go (the older that she knew could swim, the youngest could not swim) , because if she had not they would have died all 3 of them. Sadly the child she let go of died. She said that she knew she did not have a choice but she said in her heart she would never forgive herself.
I can't imagine how she deals with that trauma to this day and into the future. Every time you see or think of the child that survived the scene probably crosses your mind for years if not forever.
What I love about this movie is there's no focus on anyone being terrible or taking advantage in any way of the situation. It's just people helping people the whole way through.
The vomiting scene...as gross as it is, makes sense to me. Those women (and everyone who was hit) were forced underwater for a long time. They swallowed a lot of stuff. What they brought up was a bunch of junk they swallowed. Not pretty, but definitely realistic.

This movie makes me cry so much, I think the overall death toll is over 200,000 people. A family member of mine was stuck for two days waiting for news of his parents, their home was destroyed but for some reason (out of character) they had decided to go up the mountain with some friends. Such an awful event
I'm from Germany. I remember when a news team followed a family who were trying to get hold of their relatives over the phone. The camera was rolling when he heard that one of his (I think) nephews survived. Everyone instantly broke down crying. I don't think anyone else survived. The sound of that grown man sobbing like a little kid lives in my head rent free.
i cried again :D regarding the black vomit: when you are caught by the wave of a tsunami you swallow water full of the things that it has been dragging, that's why the mother when she vomits has strange things in her stomach
227,898 people died from that tsunami. You’d think that a couple of hundred people dying is a lot, but more than 200,000 is crazy! Still makes me feel so sad.
The bit that got me emotionally was when the dad makes the phone call to the parents, ewen McGregors acting was some of the most genuine and believable I have seen in any movie.

I read that this disaster in 2004 is what mandated for countries in tsunami zones to issue tsunami warnings because none existed before this. now you get advance warning via sirens and cities have to have tsunami drills and clearly delineated paths to high ground in the event of a tsunami. that aside, this movie made me cry just as much as you guys did ❤
after the earthquake there was a metereologist(I know it has nothing to do with earthquakes) but aparentelly he knew about it, he feared a tsunami could hit the island, he tried in vain to get new's stations, newspapers,anyone to broadcast an alert of tsunami, a warning.... he couldnt
The woman whose family it is about was on set for the filming. The director used her memories to set up the scenes down to the exact positions the family was in when the tsunami hit and everything that transpired after.
To be completely honest, I did not see this movie because I knew I didn't want to subject my heart to the trauma. However, I CAN watch it with you three. Thank you for being my buffer and feeling it full on. I still teared up, but I'm not a sobbing mess. ❤
Tom is an incredible actor!! and he was on broadway already before this!! I remember being a fan of his since this movie and i vividly remember when the casting of his for spiderman came out and being so excited and happy. I'm also a fan of spiderman and back then rumors were that the casting was for either dylan o'brien or logan lerman, and most people thought tom seemed too small and uncharming for the role. Little did the know!!!!!! I hope one day you guys react to his umbrella number on lypsync lmao, that kinda did wonders for his pr back during the first spiderman

Three certainties in life: death, taxes, and Bryce gonna cry at parent stuff 🤣🤣🤣 Me too though 😭 I really felt the dad’s agony in this because I have 3 kids too & kind of a similar age gap…one older and then two younger close together. And I thought how terrified I would be in his shoes and the gut wrenching decision to leave the little two to look for the oldest. The first time I watched this I couldn’t even see the screen at those parts because I was crying so hard.
This film destroys me too. Glad you enjoyed it and appreciate how stellar the acting was. I feel like Tom absolutely stole this film. I was familiar with him a little from playing Billy Elliot on the West End and then I saw this and was blown away by him. When his name was included in the final line up of Spiderman possibilities I was rooting for him 100%. Between his athletic ability and the absolute power he brought acting-wise in this film I knew he’d kill it. And turns out he’s great at comedy too! I’m not a disaster film fan at all, it’s my least favourite genre and I hadn’t considered that you could describe this is as a disaster film. Guess it’s my favourite one!
I saw this in the theater and they’d just improved their sound system; I could barely breathe the entire time because I knew if I tried to breathe I’d start crying. Naomi got an Oscar for this movie, and for good reason.
I watched this movie because I’ve been obsessed with Ewan McGregor since Moulin Rouge. Then while watching I was absolutely captivated by Tom Holland’s performance. I would recommend it to everyone. I couldn’t believe it when he was announced as Spider-Man.

When i was living in Thailand, my family used to visit southern Thailand, where it happened during Christmas and new year holiday every years, but for some reason, that same year, we changed plan and go northern of Thailand instead. When we saw it on the news, we were shocked. I remember that my parents could say a word. I'm glad we decided to go north instead When this movie came out our i made my whole family watched together, and I remembered we were crying so many times.. .
The movie's mostly from the mother's and Lucas' perspective (and she is a doctor so she knew exactly how bad off she was the whole time). And Lucas was actually only ten years old but people found his actions (helping his mom, seeing her wounds and being brave and strong about it) too unbelievable for such a young kid so they aged him up a little. But even crazier was the youngest two. The waves came and went for hours, btw. These tiny boys (5 and 7 years old) were clinging to a palm tree for hours, thinking their whole family had died. And they just skipped it for the movie because the filmmakers decided it was too traumatizing to show. Oh, and I think the death total was around 25,000 dead across multiple countries (the tsunami hit from India all the way to Indonesia).
I saw an interview of survivors & a lot of them were in the hotel sleeping having no idea what was happening. This lady opened the balcony door to hang out & all she saw was this huge wave that looked like a wall. It completely knocked her out. Thats how powerful the water is itself
One of the scariest sounds is when youre by the beach and theyre testing the tsunami horns. I live in california and ive always had nightmares of dying from a tsunami 😅

This is the most realistic looking tsunami ever. It scared me so much when I first watched it, I couldn't go swimming anymore. Not even in the pool, and it stayed with me bc large bodies of water scare tf outta me now.
This movie is so brutal and it hits even harder when you realize more than 200 000 people died. The fact the whole family survived, is honestly extraordinary. The guy who's wife and daughter went to the beach, i think his family sadly did not survive. People lost whole families in that disaster.
I’ve seen this before and even watching this with you I’ve been bawling at these clips. It’s just unreal. It hurts my heart to see people in pain. But it’s truly a beautiful film.
This movie really struck a cord. A few years ago, I remembered and wanted to know more. I read the story was based on a radio program. If i remember correctly, it was an anniversay of the tsunami and Maria (the mom) was invited to talk about it. The producer was driving on her way for Christmas shopping and pulled over to hear it all. Once it finished, she called the director and said, we have to make this a movie. Maria has spoken about the trauma her family survived. She said, recovering from the tsunami took her years. She and her family are fantastic speakers. She's said that the movie just described a little bit of what happened. If any of you speaks spanish, you should find the original radio program. It's freaking haunting.

This movie is so amazing, it never fails to make me cry. Their acting is spot on, Tom Holland really killed this role. It's so crazy to think that these natural disasters happen all around the world. Seeing that tsunami in this movie is probably one of the most frightening things I've seen, it's a miracle that the family survived. Their perseverance, strength, and hope helped them find each other. Such a great movie! ❤
Probably the saddest part of this video (not the movie) is when y'all were wondering how many people died. I don't know if you googled the number after watching this but in case anyone wants to know, over 225,000 people died across the 14 countries this tsunami hit. At least 10,000 were children. My respect goes out to all who survived, my sympathy to all that passed or had family that perished, and my well wishes to everyone out there. Someone would miss you if you were gone, and someone would thank their deity that you lived. That was the point where I realised how young they must have been - I was looking at the internet as the news came in about Tsunami hitting as hard and far as it did...
it was terrible, I looked on YT for videos, and came across survivers interviews, some tourist didnt survive at all, I mean the group, the family died all, or locals that start telling the story and go...I lost my wife, my 2yo, my 10yo, my sister, may parents, my uncle, my nephew.... people that lost 14 people of their family, were they were left virtually completely alone
I live in New Orleans and this whole thing is so reminiscent of Katrina. A natural disaster is such a traumatic experience for a community and everyone involved. This is such an amazing and underrated movie. It’s title is so fitting. Very emotional and eye opening. Since tsunamis don’t affect a majority of the world, we don’t think about how horrific they can be.

I was emotional during the whole movie and was awestruck by Tom Holland’s performance and devastated at Ewan’s scene with the cell phone. He’s never been so amazing…but the hell they put Naomi thru deserves the special recognition award to me. She is in a class all her own here. This movie just hit every emotion all the way through. Amazing.
The thing she threw up was a fishing line she had swallowed when the wave hit. It was covered in so much guck and mud that it saved her throat from being torn up.

There are so many fun facts about this film I don’t even know when to begin. Firstly - this was toms first time on a set, ever. Secondly - they met up with the real family and did a lot of interviews for accuracies sake. A lot of it was filmed in heavy duty custom pools for days and days - the filming time was quite strenuous. Honestly such a great movie 😊
So terrifying but such a good movie. It was nominated for an Oscar! The 2003 Boxing Day tsunami was the deadliest in recorded history, taking roughly 230,000 lives… 😢
This movie was done so well. As you mentioned, the acting was top notch and agree Tom Holland carried the film. Glad you mentioned the # who died. When Zuff said 500 , I was thinking boy are you for a shock! I knew it was above 250k. I was in Thailand a few years after this tsunami hit and there was still devastation and clean up being done. There are warning signs everywhere related to tsunami and if water retreats, you get to high ground immediately! Also, this tsunami did spur new alert systems across the pacific to warn others.
This is my all time favorite natural disaster movie!! I’ve watched it so many times. The effects,the acting and etc it’s absolutely stunning and gut wrenching.
Saw this in theaters and sobbed and became obsessed with the story and since have forced everyone in my life to watch so I can see their emotional reactions. So this was the most excited I’ve been for a video!
I think I remember on the news back in the days, they said that kids had more chance of survival from the waves because their body was so small and therefore hit less stranded object that could cut body parts like it would for an adult. Also, Tsunamis are still quite impossible to predict, just as we saw with the recents ones.
One of the few movies I’ve seen in theaters where everyone was quiet as they walked out at the end. Such a well done movie about an unimaginable tragedy.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but a lot of the crew and the extras were from the town where the tsunami hit and had been there that day. I watched the behind the scenes and the director and actors all talked about how they were incredibly helpful in making the movie as real as possible.
I'm thrilled you chose this to react to; not nearly enough people do. Incredible performances across the board. I just wish the film had put the miracle into more perspective, not only to celebrate the family's great fortune, but also to honor those who weren't so fortunate.
I've watched this movie so many times, and all the documentaries I can find on both the 2004 and 2011 tsunami's. So heartbreaking, and so many people died!
If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry. Rob nervous laughing through the mum’s initial watch of the injuries (leg skin falling off) just goes to show people react in different ways to the same horrifying circumstances we are all seeing. Personally, I was in utter shock and couldn’t talk. As always, amazing reaction guys!!
I didn't even register that Lucas was Tom Holland until I saw all the marvel movies with him in it. Damn, he was so young! I took it upon myself to look at the cast for this movie, his two brothers also played a role in here too, but casted as "kid in the tent #1 and #2."
The reason why he was cast in Spiderman was him being in this movie before that. It was very successful at the time and everyone praised the work of the kids, but specially his work as well as Naomi Watts. And yes this happened to a Spanish family that was living in Japan at the time, she was a doctor and they were on holidays in Thailand back then. All of them survived and everything that happened in the movie happened exactly like that.
You probably know already by now but that Tsunami killed more than 200’000 people… A friend of my mother worked in a hotel when it hit and she had to help identify hundreds of bodies afterwards. Thankfully she wasn’t hurt herself because she was close to the mountains and fled as soon as they heard warnings about the water retreating. This incident left her absolutely traumatized for life and I imagine that goes for a ton of people who were there…

I remember watching this in the cinema with my friend and I’ve seen it many times since. The visceral reaction I had the first time I saw the way the mom's leg was cut up is etched into my brain with perfect clarity even thou it was a decade ago. Also I always cry at the end when they’re reunited. Fun fact (or not fun but anyway) the current president of my country was in Thailand when the tsunami hit and survived by hanging in a palm tree. Also I had a teacher in primary school who’d been there too.
I remember this so well, sat up like 24 hr straight and watched the news. Had friends who were there on vacation. We also must remember the locals who wasn’t able to fly back home, they lost their homes and business but still helped tourists to ger through it. Some tourists even stayed to help rebuild. So many lives lost 😞
I remember as a 7 year old watching the news with my dad that morning and seeing the aftermath of it. I had tsunami nightmares for years and i wasnt even there.

I went through a bad car accident, died 3 times during it and got a spinal cord injury and a dislocated ankle as well as a small concussion but something is not done with me yet and it saved me. Life has been super hard since it and it’s been hard to stay positive but I don’t dislike life anymore that’s for sure

I am very happy for her. I did not like that Hollywood white washed her story, though. That woman and her family were brown, and they were not an all-white family like they were portrayed here. That really bothered me. I know it’s typical in the industry.

We lost around 530 Swedes alone, one of the worst events in our history. Basically everyone knew someone who was there when it happened, my aunt managed to survive luckily.
Nothing compared to the locals but for such a small country we lost a lot.
I was 8 back then and I remember how massive it was, sorta felt like our version of 9/11 where it's the only thing ppl talked about, it was on every frontpage/news channel for weeks. Everyone knew someone they couldn't get a hold of, we held silent minutes and memorials in school for ppl who lost their relatives.

As someone who survived this tsunami I think the movie showed such a realistic view of how it was. How the tsunami itself isn't the end of the hardship and you have to try and survive after as well in a hostile landscape. The terror of not knowing where your loved ones are. Everything is destroyed, all the infrastructure gone and many people were stranded on small islands not knowing how to get out. Injured people left to nothing but kind natives who just lost everything but still gave so much. No food, no money, no roads, no boats. Finally being rescued from the catastrophe site but just ending up in an overfilled hospital with most of their supplies gone, tons of bodies everywhere and just hearing the screams from people having procedures done without anasthesia or from people who lost loved ones.
I'm sorry u went through something like that, I can't imagine the trauma this cause on someone! Hope u know how strong u are and hope you recovered physically and mentally well! 💜

One thing that always gets me about this movie is Lucas' reactions to seeing his mom so messed up in the hospital. There is something so terrifying about being a kid and watching the person who has an almost godlike position in your life completely break down. That's the person who takes care of you, and having those roles reversed is super traumatic.
It's nowhere near the same but I was 18 the first time my mom woke up after a seizure. She was absolutely messed up, she couldn't remember where she worked and her thoughts kept looping. I can't wake up before her without fearing she'll wake up like that again. Seeing medical emergencys in family is TERRIFYING
Also too, the mom in the movie is a physician. So that kind of adds another layer to it. Like imagine you’re used to your parent knowing how to take care of your illnesses, what to do when you’re physically hurt, when you need to go to the doctor, and then this kind of stuff happens. My mom is a nurse and it was definitely weird having that role reversal at one point in my life and see her in pain.

Take the Chris Watts case where they had to retrieve the girls from the oil tanks, I heard those first responders were out of their minds after that and needed intense therapy. Think about all the defectives, cops, ambulance and firefighter folks, doctors, nurses and medical examiners they are all step up and speak of the horrors they’ve seen. Most talk about therapy, some turn to drinking, others have to emotionally detach themselves from their work to cope.
What got me was watching the mother and the son just quickly let go of their "safe" place immediately when they saw/heard each other. They were not focused on their own safety but the other's.

I still remember reading the story of model Petra Nemcova, who was also in Thailand with her boyfriend when the tsunami hit. She sustained multiple injuries and clung to a tree for hours in order to survive, but unfortunately her boyfriend died in the disaster. Natural disasters cause such profound loss and devastation, but people's resiliency and ability to overcome tragedy is truly amazing and inspiring.

So, the movie begins and my dad and I were like "yaay cool family vacation" and then this giant wave comes out of nowhere and all this terrible things are happening, im sobbing my eyes out and im like "mom.. i dont think we are in the right room".

Yeah, but he is right. Nearly a quarter of a million people perished, and these two little boys didn't even have a bruise or a scratch. Little kids really have guardian angels. The whole family got off extremely lightly, Dad and Lucas only receiving some bruises and cuts. Only Mom got hit really hard, way harder than shown in the movie. She spent a year in the hospital, had 16 major surgeries, and lost part of her leg.
my mom’s best friend was on his honeymoon in thailand when the tsunami hit, and watching my mom fall apart and call anyone she could to try and find him was so painful. thankfully he and his wife went up to the mountains the day before, so they were safe, but with the chaos that followed, it took a week to finally hear from them. i was only 9, but i still remember everything so vividly.
Ewan McGregor broke me with that phone call scene. Years later my coworker and I were discussing movies and I suggested this one. I told her about how that scene was so heartbreaking to me and she looked at me and said. " You're crying right now!" And I was. My eyes were swimming when thinking of it two years after.

This film actually hits so hard knowing it’s a true story. I was sobbing throughout Tom Holland performance at his young age truly showing his talent I have seen him in the devil all the time as well but this performance was just different. This movie truly solidified my fear of tsunamis a great reaction as usual
every time i rewatch this film it reminds me of that guy’s raw talent. this had to be one of the most emotionally demanding and draining performances for a child actor of all time and imo he blew everyone else away. and i have a deep respect for the actors who played his parents, but my eyes are always drawn to that kid’s face and how he’s just. acting. not an actual survivor. incredible. can’t wait to see his future oscar-winning performance.

This movie terrified and hit hard for me. My parents and my two siblings were there in 2003, where the tsunami hit in 2004. My brother's name is Luke. And I grew up in Japan so tsunamis were already a fear for me.
Yes, I was in Khao Lak in 2003 & up in Bangkok, away from the coast, on Dec 26, 2004, when the tsunami hit. Was so terrible.
My great aunt was there and we couldn't reach her for days, but apparently a tour guide saved her life by guiding her up a "mountain" when it happened. Without the locals who knew what tsunamis were she would have been dead.
It is crazy that basically the word tsunami was completely unknown in the west before this.
The real Maria was also living in Japan before that, and also had a fear of tsunamis 🙃

Many people that got under the water and survived said it was like being in a washing machine, You had no control. And there was 2 waves. In Sweden there was a lot of children that returned without parents, and parents returned with no children. I remember when this happened, I broke your heart. And for people that lived in this Area , they could not even fly home , They lost family members plus homes . Most Swedish People that died , died in Kao Lak. (sorry if I spell it wrong) Daniel was actually a Swedish Boy. And when you ask How Daniel ended up there, people got separated. One mother was separated from her husband and had to hold on to both her children in the water at the same time she hold on to a a tree , the problem was that she knew that there was no way she could hold on to the tree and at the same time her children, She tried but the water was to strong. So she had to let one child go (the older that she knew could swim, the youngest could not swim) , because if she had not they would have died all 3 of them. Sadly the child she let go of died. She said that she knew she did not have a choice but she said in her heart she would never forgive herself.

What I love about this movie is there's no focus on anyone being terrible or taking advantage in any way of the situation. It's just people helping people the whole way through.
The vomiting scene...as gross as it is, makes sense to me. Those women (and everyone who was hit) were forced underwater for a long time. They swallowed a lot of stuff. What they brought up was a bunch of junk they swallowed. Not pretty, but definitely realistic.

This movie makes me cry so much, I think the overall death toll is over 200,000 people. A family member of mine was stuck for two days waiting for news of his parents, their home was destroyed but for some reason (out of character) they had decided to go up the mountain with some friends. Such an awful event
I'm from Germany. I remember when a news team followed a family who were trying to get hold of their relatives over the phone. The camera was rolling when he heard that one of his (I think) nephews survived. Everyone instantly broke down crying. I don't think anyone else survived. The sound of that grown man sobbing like a little kid lives in my head rent free.

The bit that got me emotionally was when the dad makes the phone call to the parents, ewen McGregors acting was some of the most genuine and believable I have seen in any movie.

I read that this disaster in 2004 is what mandated for countries in tsunami zones to issue tsunami warnings because none existed before this. now you get advance warning via sirens and cities have to have tsunami drills and clearly delineated paths to high ground in the event of a tsunami. that aside, this movie made me cry just as much as you guys did ❤
after the earthquake there was a metereologist(I know it has nothing to do with earthquakes) but aparentelly he knew about it, he feared a tsunami could hit the island, he tried in vain to get new's stations, newspapers,anyone to broadcast an alert of tsunami, a warning.... he couldnt

The woman whose family it is about was on set for the filming. The director used her memories to set up the scenes down to the exact positions the family was in when the tsunami hit and everything that transpired after.
That tsunami was terrifying to the world at the time, this movie did a great job of showing the horror without being exploitive to victims

Tom is an incredible actor!! and he was on broadway already before this!! I remember being a fan of his since this movie and i vividly remember when the casting of his for spiderman came out and being so excited and happy. I'm also a fan of spiderman and back then rumors were that the casting was for either dylan o'brien or logan lerman, and most people thought tom seemed too small and uncharming for the role. Little did the know!!!!!! I hope one day you guys react to his umbrella number on lypsync lmao, that kinda did wonders for his pr back during the first spiderman

I really felt the dad’s agony in this because I have 3 kids too & kind of a similar age gap…one older and then two younger close together. And I thought how terrified I would be in his shoes and the gut wrenching decision to leave the little two to look for the oldest. The first time I watched this I couldn’t even see the screen at those parts because I was crying so hard.
This film destroys me too. Glad you enjoyed it and appreciate how stellar the acting was. I feel like Tom absolutely stole this film. I was familiar with him a little from playing Billy Elliot on the West End and then I saw this and was blown away by him. When his name was included in the final line up of Spiderman possibilities I was rooting for him 100%. Between his athletic ability and the absolute power he brought acting-wise in this film I knew he’d kill it. And turns out he’s great at comedy too!

I saw this in the theater and they’d just improved their sound system; I could barely breathe the entire time because I knew if I tried to breathe I’d start crying. Naomi got an Oscar for this movie, and for good reason.

When i was living in Thailand, my family used to visit southern Thailand, where it happened during Christmas and new year holiday every years, but for some reason, that same year, we changed plan and go northern of Thailand instead. When we saw it on the news, we were shocked. I remember that my parents could say a word. I'm glad we decided to go north instead

The movie's mostly from the mother's and Lucas' perspective (and she is a doctor so she knew exactly how bad off she was the whole time). And Lucas was actually only ten years old but people found his actions (helping his mom, seeing her wounds and being brave and strong about it) too unbelievable for such a young kid so they aged him up a little.
But even crazier was the youngest two. The waves came and went for hours, btw. These tiny boys (5 and 7 years old) were clinging to a palm tree for hours, thinking their whole family had died. And they just skipped it for the movie because the filmmakers decided it was too traumatizing to show.
Oh, and I think the death total was around 25,000 dead across multiple countries (the tsunami hit from India all the way to Indonesia).

I saw an interview of survivors & a lot of them were in the hotel sleeping having no idea what was happening. This lady opened the balcony door to hang out & all she saw was this huge wave that looked like a wall. It completely knocked her out. Thats how powerful the water is itself

This is the most realistic looking tsunami ever. It scared me so much when I first watched it, I couldn't go swimming anymore. Not even in the pool, and it stayed with me bc large bodies of water scare tf outta me now.
This movie is so brutal and it hits even harder when you realize more than 200 000 people died. The fact the whole family survived, is honestly extraordinary. The guy who's wife and daughter went to the beach, i think his family sadly did not survive. People lost whole families in that disaster.
The most chilling video I think I've ever seen is of a toddler sized kid walking up to the beach as the water rushes in and washes him/her away.

This movie really struck a cord. A few years ago, I remembered and wanted to know more. I read the story was based on a radio program. If i remember correctly, it was an anniversay of the tsunami and Maria (the mom) was invited to talk about it. The producer was driving on her way for Christmas shopping and pulled over to hear it all. Once it finished, she called the director and said, we have to make this a movie. Maria has spoken about the trauma her family survived. She said, recovering from the tsunami took her years. She and her family are fantastic speakers. She's said that the movie just described a little bit of what happened. If any of you speaks spanish, you should find the original radio program. It's freaking haunting.
At this point I'm convinced Zuff doesn't have any emotions that aren't happiness and joy

This movie is so amazing, it never fails to make me cry. Their acting is spot on, Tom Holland really killed this role. It's so crazy to think that these natural disasters happen all around the world. Seeing that tsunami in this movie is probably one of the most frightening things I've seen, it's a miracle that the family survived. Their perseverance, strength, and hope helped them find each other. Such a great movie! ❤
Probably the saddest part of this video (not the movie) is when y'all were wondering how many people died. I don't know if you googled the number after watching this but in case anyone wants to know, over 225,000 people died across the 14 countries this tsunami hit. At least 10,000 were children. My respect goes out to all who survived, my sympathy to all that passed or had family that perished, and my well wishes to everyone out there.

That was the point where I realised how young they must have been - I was looking at the internet as the news came in about Tsunami hitting as hard and far as it did...
it was terrible, I looked on YT for videos, and came across survivers interviews, some tourist didnt survive at all, I mean the group, the family died all, or locals that start telling the story and go...I lost my wife, my 2yo, my 10yo, my sister, may parents, my uncle, my nephew.... people that lost 14 people of their family, were they were left virtually completely alone

I live in New Orleans and this whole thing is so reminiscent of Katrina. A natural disaster is such a traumatic experience for a community and everyone involved.
This is such an amazing and underrated movie. It’s title is so fitting. Very emotional and eye opening. Since tsunamis don’t affect a majority of the world, we don’t think about how horrific they can be.

The thing she threw up was a fishing line she had swallowed when the wave hit. It was covered in so much guck and mud that it saved her throat from being torn up.

There are so many fun facts about this film I don’t even know when to begin. Firstly - this was toms first time on a set, ever. Secondly - they met up with the real family and did a lot of interviews for accuracies sake. A lot of it was filmed in heavy duty custom pools for days and days - the filming time was quite strenuous. Honestly such a great movie 😊

I was in Thailand a few years after this tsunami hit and there was still devastation and clean up being done. There are warning signs everywhere related to tsunami and if water retreats, you get to high ground immediately! Also, this tsunami did spur new alert systems across the pacific to warn others.

I think I remember on the news back in the days, they said that kids had more chance of survival from the waves because their body was so small and therefore hit less stranded object that could cut body parts like it would for an adult. Also, Tsunamis are still quite impossible to predict, just as we saw with the recents ones.
One of the few movies I’ve seen in theaters where everyone was quiet as they walked out at the end. Such a well done movie about an unimaginable tragedy.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but a lot of the crew and the extras were from the town where the tsunami hit and had been there that day. I watched the behind the scenes and the director and actors all talked about how they were incredibly helpful in making the movie as real as possible.
I'm thrilled you chose this to react to; not nearly enough people do. Incredible performances across the board. I just wish the film had put the miracle into more perspective, not only to celebrate the family's great fortune, but also to honor those who weren't so fortunate.
I've watched this movie so many times, and all the documentaries I can find on both the 2004 and 2011 tsunami's. So heartbreaking, and so many people died!
The little girl that was saved by the elephant is incredible too.
If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry. Rob nervous laughing through the mum’s initial watch of the injuries (leg skin falling off) just goes to show people react in different ways to the same horrifying circumstances we are all seeing. Personally, I was in utter shock and couldn’t talk. As always, amazing reaction guys!!
Guys, the trailer to this movie made me cry, and the movie had me bawling!!! Such an amazing movie!!
I didn't even register that Lucas was Tom Holland until I saw all the marvel movies with him in it. Damn, he was so young! I took it upon myself to look at the cast for this movie, his two brothers also played a role in here too, but casted as "kid in the tent #1 and #2."
The reason why he was cast in Spiderman was him being in this movie before that. It was very successful at the time and everyone praised the work of the kids, but specially his work as well as Naomi Watts. And yes this happened to a Spanish family that was living in Japan at the time, she was a doctor and they were on holidays in Thailand back then. All of them survived and everything that happened in the movie happened exactly like that.
You probably know already by now but that Tsunami killed more than 200’000 people… A friend of my mother worked in a hotel when it hit and she had to help identify hundreds of bodies afterwards. Thankfully she wasn’t hurt herself because she was close to the mountains and fled as soon as they heard warnings about the water retreating. This incident left her absolutely traumatized for life and I imagine that goes for a ton of people who were there…

I remember watching this in the cinema with my friend and I’ve seen it many times since. The visceral reaction I had the first time I saw the way the mom's leg was cut up is etched into my brain with perfect clarity even thou it was a decade ago. Also I always cry at the end when they’re reunited.
Fun fact (or not fun but anyway) the current president of my country was in Thailand when the tsunami hit and survived by hanging in a palm tree. Also I had a teacher in primary school who’d been there too.

I remember this so well, sat up like 24 hr straight and watched the news. Had friends who were there on vacation.
We also must remember the locals who wasn’t able to fly back home, they lost their homes and business but still helped tourists to ger through it.
Some tourists even stayed to help rebuild. So many lives lost 😞

This movie hit me so hard that I had to cry for those who died and survived the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami on Boxing Day.
I remember as a 7 year old watching the news with my dad that morning and seeing the aftermath of it. I had tsunami nightmares for years and i wasnt even there.
